Abstract:A quantitative method is presented for stopping the intrinsic precession of a spherical pendulum due to ellipsoidal motion. Removing this unwanted precession renders the Foucault precession due to the turning of the Earth readily observable. The method is insensitive to the size and direction of the perturbative forces leading to ellipsoidal motion. We demonstrate that a short (three meter) pendulum can be pushed in a controlled way to make the Foucault precession dominant. The method makes room-height or table-top Foucault pendula more accurate and practical to build.

Abstract:Diniz, Eduardo Moraes ; The Foucault pendulum is a physical apparatus that shows the Earth's rotation through the variation of the plane of oscillation over time. The main physical agent responsible for this phenomenon is the non-inertial Coriolis force, which couples the coordinates in the equation of motion. Although the Foucault pendulum is more than 170 years old, its theoretical description still lacks completeness, as there is no exact vector solution to the problem or even a decoupled equation of motion. Furthermore, the main prediction about the Foucault pendulum, the dependence of the pendulum's plane of oscillation rotation on the latitude, needs to be revised as such dependence is more complex than is shown in the literature, once it depends essentially on the initial conditions. Here all these points raised are successfully answered.

Abstract:With the aim of preventing postfracture osteopenia, we randomized 24 patients with internally fixed ankle fractures to 3 months of treatment with placebo or 200 IU nasal salmon calcitonin (sCT) in a prospective, double-blind design. 3 patients were excluded, leaving 11 patients in the placebo group and 10 in the sCT group for study. Bilateral measurements of bone mineral content (BMC) in the coronal plane of the proximal tibia were performed by dual photon absorptiometry (DPA) postoperatively within 7 days of the fracture and after 1.5, 3 and 6 months. 3 months after the fracture, BMC in the injured legs had decreased by 14% in the placebo group and 2.1% in the sCT group. This difference was not statistically significant. In the healthy legs, a statistically significant intergroup difference was seen 6 weeks after the fracture, caused by a tendency towards a decrease in BMC of 4.6% in the placebo group, while BMC in the sCT group had increased by 7.4%. Nasal sCT may to some extent, but in this study not significantly, reduce postfracture osteopenia, and cause a significant effect on BMC in the healthy leg.

Abstract:A conical pendulum has slightly different frequencies of vibration when it rotates clockwise or anticlockwise in a laboratory on a rotating Earth. This splitting of the frequency is due to the presence of the Lorentzlike Coriolis force which presses either radially inward or outward on the pendulum bob depending on the sense with which it traverses its circular orbit. The precession of the plane of a Foucault pendulum may be viewed as a beat phenomenon in the planar superposition of the clockwise and anticlockwise circular motions of the conical pendulum.

Abstract:The Foucault Pendulum is a Spherical Pendulum of fixed length with two angular degrees of freedom, attached to a suspension which rotates once a day around the Earth axis at a distance essentially set by Earth radius and the geodetic latitude of the pendulum. We write the Lagrange Function in the inertial frame of the fixed Earth axis and couple it strictly to the rotating frame at which the suspension appears at rest. The Euler-Lagrange equations are a coupled system of second-order differential equations for the two coordinates of the mass projected on the local horizontal plane. These are solved numerically in a C++ program which allows to study the trajectories beyond the various standard approximations of the literature.

Abstract:The motion of a classical point particle submitted to a central restoring force in a rotating frame is studied. Trajectories taking account all fictitious forces are presented. The obtained solutions are applied to the problems of pendulums oscillating on the surface of the Earth, in particular regarding the Foucault pendulum. This makes it possible to obtain precise solutions and to characterize the trajectories as centered trochoid curves.

Abstract:The inverted pendulum is a mechanical system with a rapidly oscillating pivot point. Using techniques similar in spirit to the methodology of effective field theories, we derive an effective Lagrangian that allows for the systematic computation of corrections to the so-called Kapitza equation. The derivation of the effective potential of the system requires non-trivial matching conditions, which need to be determined order by order in the power-counting of the problem. The convergence behavior of the series is investigated on the basis of high-order results obtained by this method.

Abstract:Since the pioneering works of Newton $(1643-1727)$, Mechanics has been constantly reinventing itself: reformulated in particular by Lagrange $(1736-1813)$ then Hamilton $(1805-1865)$, it now offers powerful conceptual and mathematical tools for the exploration of the most complex dynamical systems, essentially via the action-angle variables formulation and more generally through the theory of canonical transformations. We give the reader an overview of these different formulations through the well-known example of Foucault's pendulum, a device created by Foucault $(1819-1868)$ and first installed in the Panthéon (Paris, France) in 1851 to display the Earth's rotation. The apparent simplicity of the Foucault pendulum is indeed an open door to the most contemporary ramifications of Classical Mechanics. We stress that the action-angle variable formalism is not necessary to understand Foucault's pendulum. The latter is simply taken as well-known simple dynamical system used to exemplify modern concepts that are crucial in order to understand more complicated dynamical systems. The Foucault pendulum installed in the collegiate church of Sainte-Waudru (Mons, Belgium) will allow us to numerically estimate the different quantities introduced. A free adaptation of excerpts from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" will offer the reader some poetic breaths.

Abstract:The relative motion equation of Foucault pendulum is solved by using the conservation law and its exact solution is a hypotrochoid in the polar coordinate.Both curvature radius and periodic formation of trajectory are determined by means of the geometric property of hypotrochoid.It is proved that the rotation speed of vector of velocity is always equal to-ωsin λ.

Abstract:In this paper we study the global dynamics of the inverted spherical pendulum with a vertically vibrating suspension point in the presence of an external horizontal periodic force field. We do not assume that this force field is weak or rapidly oscillating. We prove that there always exists a non-falling periodic solution, i.e., there exists an initial condition such that the rod of the pendulum never becomes horizontal along the corresponding solution. We also show numerically that there exists an asymptotically stable non-falling solution for a wide range of parameters of the system.

As an analogue, planet orbiting in the rotating galaxy is considered as the the giant galactic gyroscope. The knowledge of these equations is inevitable for the construction of LHC where each orbital proton "feels" the Coriolis force caused by the rotation of the Earth.

Abstract:In this paper, Newton's equations are solved to describe the motion of a conical pendulum in a rotating frame for the right- and left-hand conical oscillations. If the pendulum is started with the initial angular velocity ( ± ω 0 − Ω z ), with ω 0 being the frequency of pendulum oscillation and Ω z the angular velocity of the rotating frame around the z-axis, the paths are shown to be circular, which would apparently indicate that the Coriolis force becomes non-effective in the rotating frame. This paper explains why the paths in the rotating frame are circular, and the difference between the periods for the right- and left-handed rotations is calculated analytically. It is also shown that in an inertial frame, the conical pendulum follows an elliptical path. As the Bravais pendulum is a conical pendulum oscillating at Earth's surface, its motion is also discussed.

Abstract:A generalization of the classical Kapitza pendulum is considered: an inverted planar mathematical pendulum with a vertically vibrating pivot point in a time-periodic horizontal force field. We study the existence of forced oscillations in the system. It is shown that there always exists a periodic solution along which the rod of the pendulum never becomes horizontal, i.e. the pendulum never falls, provided the period of vibration and the period of horizontal force are commensurable. We also present a sufficient condition for the existence of at least two different periodic solutions without falling. We show numerically that there exist stable periodic solutions without falling.

Abstract:Summary In this article, we show that by subjecting the pivot of a simple inextensible pendulum to small amplitude high frequency rectilinear oscillations it is possible to make it operate in a weightless environment. The axis of vibration of the pivot defines a preferred direction in space and a consequential dynamical structure which is completely absent when the pivot is fixed. Using spherical polar coordinates centred at the pivot, we show that the motion of such a pendulum has fast and slow-scale components which we analyse using the method of multiple scales. The slow scale equation for the polar angle is autonomous, and a phase plane analysis reveals the essential orbital structure including the existence of conical solutions analogous to the terrestrial fixed pivot conical pendulum. In the absence of an azimuthal velocity component, its behaviour can provide a direct simulation of a plane terrestrial simple fixed pivot pendulum with a correspondingly simple form for the small amplitude period. We can also use a two-scale analysis to examine the effects of damping. Here, the slow scale polar equation has two asymptotically stable states, and we employ a combination of numerical and asymptotic analyses to elicit the slow scale orbital trajectories.

Abstract:We have designed and constructed a physical pendulum that allows us to demonstrate its behavior for a variety of forces and initial conditions. All parameters in the equation of motion can be defined by the user. The apparatus can demonstrate phenomena ranging from simple undamped harmonic oscillations to chaotic behavior. The position of the pendulum and the derived quantities such as the velocity and acceleration can be stored for later analysis.

Abstract:The period of oscillation of a simple pendulum ($T = 2\pi\sqrt{l/g}$) is a familiar formula to the average first-year physics student. However, deriving this expression from first principles involves solving a non-linear differential equation using the small angle approximation, which may appear obscure to a student in the early stages of learning calculus. Therefore, we propose an alternative approach to the derivation of this formula employing geometry, algebra, and physical intuition. Our method follows the ideas of the fathers of calculus, replacing the circular path of the pendulum with a successive collection of infinitesimal inclined planes and summing the travel times of each plane in the limit as the number of planes becomes very large. Notably, the evaluation of this limit relies solely on geometry, making it accessible to any student, even those not yet familiar with calculus techniques.

Abstract:This paper aims to show how to guide students with a familiar example to extract as much physics as possible before jumping into mathematical calculation. The period for a physical pendulum made up of a uniform rod is changed by attaching a piece of putty on it. The period for the combined system depends on the location of the putty. Simple reasoning without calculation shows that there are two locations for the putty that do not change the period of the physical pendulum: the axis and the center of percussion. Moreover, without calculation, we reason that there is at least one minimal period when the putty lies somewhere between these two locations.
