Abstract:ABSTRACTThe modulation of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) to the relationship between the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and the winter climate over North America (NA) was investigated using both observational data and a simple general circulation model. ENSO events are divided into strong and moderate events according to their amplitudes. These ENSO events are further categorized into two groups according to the phases of the PDO. The present study focuses on the impact of moderate ENSO events on the wintertime climate over NA. The results show that a moderate El Niño signal is strong and stable and can significantly influence the wintertime climate variability over NA during a cold PDO phase, whereas climate anomalies are weak and are not significantly associated with moderate El Niño events during a positive PDO phase. Possible mechanisms accounting for the modulation of the impacts of moderate El Niño events on the wintertime climate over NA are analysed. Two factors may contribute to the different impacts of moderate El Niño events during warm and cold PDO phases. First, the different characteristics of the tropical Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) associated with moderate El Niño events. Second, the difference in the climatological mean state between the warm and cold phases of PDO years. Our numerical experiments suggest that the cold PDO mean state is more favourable to a wavetrain‐like atmospheric response to an El Niño‐like tropical Pacific forcing over the North American sector than the warm PDO mean state is.
The Interdecadal Change of Enso Impact on Wintertime East Asian Climate

Abstract:The interdecadal change in the relationship between the winter mean surface air temperature (SAT) over East Asia (EA) and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated using both observational data and a simple general circulation model. The positive phase of the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) of SAT over EA is characterized by significant warming over midlatitude to high-latitude EA and is linked to the Arctic Oscillation. The second EOF (SAT-EOF2) is represented by significant cooling extending from 55 degrees N to the tropics and abnormal warming over high-latitude EA. Focus is given to SAT-EOF2 which has a close relationship with the La Nina-type sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. A clear shift in SAT-EOF2 is observed in the mid-1980s. The relationships between SAT-EOF2 and ENSO in two subperiods, i.e., 1957 to 1982 (P1) and 1986 to 2010 (P2), are discussed and compared. Results show that the relationship between SAT-EOF2 and ENSO significantly strengthens after the mid-1980s due to stronger SST and precipitation anomalies in P2 than in P1 associated with ENSO in the tropical western Pacific. In the midlatitudes, the Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern is more closely related to ENSO in P2, whereas in P1, the ENSO-related atmospheric circulation anomalies are more similar to a zonally orientated teleconnection pattern. Numerical experiments suggest that the difference in the ENSO-related circulation anomaly in the midlatitudes is likely related to the difference in the climatological mean flows of these two subperiods.
Interdecadal changes in the asymmetric impacts of ENSO on wintertime rainfall over China and atmospheric circulations over western North Pacific

Abstract:Based on data diagnoses, in this study the interdecadal changes in asymmetric impacts of ENSO on wintertime East Asian climate are investigated. It is found that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) can significantly modulate the asymmetry in the responses of the East Asian climate to El Niño and La Niña events. In positive PDO phase the response is asymmetric with a strong anomalous anticyclone over western North Pacific (WNP) and significant positive rainfall anomalies over southern China during El Niño winters, but a weak anomalous cyclone over WNP and insignificant negative rainfall anomalies over southern China during La Niña winters. However, such asymmetric responses do not appear in negative PDO phase, with comparable amplitudes of anomalous circulations over WNP and rainfall over southern China in El Niño and La Niña winters. Further analyses reveal that the warm background of the tropical Pacific in positive PDO phase causes significant difference in the amplitudes of convection anomalies over tropical western Pacific, resulting in asymmetric responses of the WNP circulation and rainfall over southern China to El Niño and La Niña events. Nevertheless, the cold background in negative PDO phase reduces the amplitude difference between El Niño and La Niña winters. A comparable convection anomalies appear in tropical western Pacific in El Niño and La Niña winters and the asymmetric responses do not occur.

Abstract:This study investigates how the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) modulates the effect of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tropical cyclone rapid intensification (RI) in the western North Pacific. The analysis shows that the interannual relationship between ENSO and annual RI number in warm PDO phases is strong and statistically significant. In cold PDO phases, however, there is no significant correlation between ENSO and RI on the interannual timescale. The enhancement of the interannual ENSO–RI relationship in warm PDO phases is mainly attributable to the change of the environmental vertical wind shear. The PDO in warm (cold) phases can strengthen (weaken) an El Niño event to increase (reduce) the effects of the warm pool of water over the equatorial Pacific in typhoon season by local diabatic heating. El Niño events are accompanied by the stronger Walker circulation in the equatorial Pacific in the warm PDO phase than in the cold PDO phase. In contrast, the Walker circulation pattern and amplitude associated with La Niña events is less affected by the alternate PDO phase. This tends to make the atmospheric response to ENSO stronger (weaker) in warm (cold) PDO phase, and so is the atmospheric teleconnection of ENSO. Our results indicate that the stratification of ENSO-based statistical RI forecast by the PDO can greatly improve the accuracy of statistical RI predictions.

Abstract:The ocean currents of the tropical Pacific Ocean vary with El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycles. A mooring time series obtained during 2014‐2018 in the western Pacific reveal that interannual variability extends to Lower Equatorial Intermediate Current (LEIC). The LEIC velocity anomalies are significantly correlated with the Niño‐3.4 index at an 11‐month lag. Monthly velocity data from the global ocean physical reanalysis product and from a linear continuously stratified ocean model during 1993‐2018 capture the 2015‐2016 signal and are used to identify the underlying mechanism. During El Niño (La Niña) events, the direct wind‐forcing in the central tropical Pacific and the reflection of Kelvin waves in the eastern Pacific during the first autumn‐winter period contribute comparably to an eastward (westward) current anomaly in the western Pacific during the second autumn‐winter period. This process is achieved mainly through the generation of the second baroclinic mode and off‐equatorial westward‐propagating downwelling (upwelling) Rossby waves.

Abstract:It is known that the wintertime North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) is an important extratropical forcing for the occurrence of an El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event in the subsequent winter via the "seasonal footprinting mechanism" (SFM). This study reveals that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) can notably modulate the relationship between the winter NPO and the following winter ENSO. During the negative AMO phase, the winter NPO has significant impacts on the following winter ENSO via the SFM. In contrast, the influence of the winter NPO on ENSO is not robust at all during the positive AMO phase. Winter NPO-generated westerly wind anomalies over the equatorial western Pacific during the following spring are much stronger during negative than positive AMO phases. It is suggested that the AMO impacts the winter NPO-induced equatorial westerly winds over the western Pacific via modulating the precipitation climatology over the tropical central Pacific and via modulating the connection of the winter NPO with spring sea surface temperature in the tropical North Atlantic.

Abstract:Based on observation data from 1958 to 2020, the current study explores the interdecadal modulation effects on moderate El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) episodes and East Asian (EA) winter surface air temperature (SAT) through the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Strong and moderate ENSO episodes are classified by their amplitudes. The current work investigates the influence of moderate ENSO episodes on the EA winter SAT, especially moderate La Niña episodes, which show a close relationship with the EA winter SAT. To explore the PDO modulation effect on the influence of ENSO episodes, these ENSO episodes are further divided into two categories in terms of warm or cold PDO phases. The composite results show that in the warm phase of the PDO, the moderate La Niña signal is relatively strong and stable, with a profound impact on the EA winter SAT variability, whereas in the cold PDO phase, the relationship between the EA winter SAT and moderate La Niña episodes becomes ambiguous. Further studies show that the PDO modulates the moderate La Niña impacts on EA winter SAT primarily through varying the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). While moderate La Niña episodes take place in a warm PDO phase, positive and negative anomalies of sea level pressure (SLP) are observed in the Eurasian continent and mid–high-latitude North Pacific, respectively, favoring anomalous northerlies along the eastern coast of East Asia and therefore a colder-than-normal EA winter. In contrast, in a moderate La Niña winter during the cold PDO phase, the mid–high-latitude North Pacific is controlled by an anomalous high-pressure system with southerly anomalies along its western flank, and therefore, a weak warm pattern is observed for the EA winter SAT.

Abstract:Abstract The interannual variation of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) across the North Pacific Ocean and the modulation of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) are investigated based on both observations and reduced gravity model experiments. Results reveal that the interannual variation of the NEC is highly related to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with unsynchronized variations both in zonal and meridional structure. The tropical and subtropical gyre branches of the NEC (NEC‐S and NEC‐N) behave antiphase variation during El Niño events with the transport of the former being enhanced and the latter being weakened across the Pacific. The NEC axis in the western/eastern Pacific shifts northward/southward during El Niño events, consistent with the meridional shift of the zero‐line of wind stress curl. Model experiments indicate that Rossby waves mainly modulate the NEC near the western boundary and the NEC‐N, while Ekman pumping modulates NEC‐S in the western basin. Meanwhile, the relationship between the interannual variation of the NEC and ENSO events is significantly modulated by different PDO phases. The PDO cold phase favors a much closer connection between the NEC and the Niño 3.4 index. The dynamics lie in that PDO‐related wind stress curl and sea level anomalies are consistent with that of El Niño, favoring the enhanced correlation between NEC and El Niño. The reverse is true for the warm phase. These results will contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of the tropical Pacific Ocean circulation and its role in climate change.

Abstract:Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) modulated the effects of ENSO on the rainy season onset over the Indo‐China Peninsula (ICP). During the warm and cold PDO phase, the correlation between El Niño and the ICP rainy season onset were substantially strengthened and weakened, respectively. Monsoon precipitation variability over the Indo‐China Peninsula (ICP) has become more complicated affected by global warming. In this study, the modulation of Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) on the relationship between El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the rainy season onset over the ICP were investigated. The results showed that the ICP rainy season onset were predominantly correlated with winter sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the East Pacific Ocean, with late and early onsets following El Niño and La Niña events, respectively. During the warm and cold PDO phase, the correlations tended to be substantially strengthened and weakened, respectively. Further analysis indicates that PDO significantly influenced the effects of ENSO on the ICP rainy season onset by modulating SSTAs and low‐level wind fields. During the El Niño events, abnormal easterlies over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and southern ICP suppressed water vapour transporting to the ICP, which may be related to the zonal SST anomaly gradient between the Indian Ocean and the Northwest Pacific Ocean. When the El Niño occurred during the warm PDO phase, the rainy season onsets were later. The anomalous easterlies became stronger corresponds to the increasing zonal sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) gradient between the Indian Ocean and the Northwest Pacific Ocean. There was no significant anomaly on the rainy season onset during the cold PDO phase. During the La Niña events, the abnormal westerlies in BOB accelerated water vapour transport, and the rainy season onset were earlier during the warm and cold PDO phase. The modulating effects of PDO on La Niña were less than those on El Niño. These results suggest that the predictability of rainy season onset over the ICP can be improved through PDO and thus help agricultural planning and water resources management.

Abstract:The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-associated wintertime atmospheric teleconnection patterns in two Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) phases are investigated using ERA-20C reanalysis data for 1950–2010. A strengthened ENSO-associated Pacific-North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern presents in PDO positive phase, while a West Pacific (WP) pattern over Northwestern Pacific and a squeezed PNA pattern coexist when ENSO occurs in PDO negative phase. The dynamical role of atmospheric transient eddy feedbacks to the teleconnection patterns are highlighted in the present study. When ENSO occurs in PDO positive phase, the uniform strengthened westerly jet anomalies downstream of the climatological main body of jet accompany with energetic transient eddy anomalies over Northeastern Pacific. The transient eddy feedbacks largely enhance and favor the strengthened PNA pattern. When ENSO occurs in PDO negative phase, the strengthened westerly jet anomalies appear to separate into two parts, one locating north of the climatological main body of jet and the other at the downstream. The accompanied transient eddy anomalies also split into two parts. Under such conditions, the transient eddy feedbacks are limited over Northeastern Pacific and favor a weak PNA pattern. However, the transient eddy anomalies over Northwestern Pacific strengthen, and the feedbacks also strengthen and largely contribute to the WP pattern. Moreover, the transient eddy anomalies over Northwestern Pacific seem to be anchored along the anomalously poleward strengthened oceanic subarctic frontal zone (SAFZ) in PDO negative phase. The enhanced atmospheric baroclinicity anomalies, coupled with the strengthened SAFZ, energize atmospheric transient eddy anomalies, and work as the potential maintenance in shaping the WP pattern.

Abstract:The Pacific decadal and interdecadal oscillation (PDO) has been extensively explored in recent decades because of its profound impact on global climate systems. It is a long-lived ENSO-like pattern of Pacific climate variability with a period of 10–30 years. The general picture is that the anomalously warm (cool) SSTs in the central North Pacific are always accompanied by the anomalously cool (warm) SSTs along the west coast of America and in the central east tropical Pacific with comparable amplitude. In general, there are two classes of opinions on the origin of this low-frequency climate variability, one thinking that it results from deterministically coupled modes of the Pacific ocean-atmosphere system, and the other, from stochastic atmospheric forcing. The deterministic origin emphasizes that the internal physical processes in an air-sea system can provide a positive feedback mechanism to amplify an initial perturbation, and a negative feedback mechanism to reverse the phase of oscillation. The dynamic evolution of ocean circulation determines the timescale of the oscillation. The stochastic origin, however, emphasizes that because the atmospheric activities can be thought as having no preferred timescale and are associated with an essentially white noise spectrum, the ocean response can manifest a red peak in a certain low frequency range with a decadal to interdecadal timescale. In this paper, the authors try to systematically understand the state of the art of observational, theoretical and numerical studies on the PDO and hope to provide a useful background reference for current research.
ENSO and East Asian winter monsoon relationship modulation associated with the anomalous northwest Pacific anticyclone

Abstract:Using observational datasets and numerical model experiments, the mechanism on the slowly varying change in the relationship between the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is investigated. The decadal-window (11-, 15-, and 21-year) moving correlations show a significant change in the boreal wintertime ENSO–EAWM relationship between two sub-periods of 1976‒1992 and 1997‒2013. Such recent change in ENSO–EAWM relationship is mainly attributed to the changes in the intensity and zonal location of the anomalous lower-tropospheric northwest Pacific anticyclone (NWP-AC). NWP-AC commonly develops near the region of the Philippine Sea during the ENSO’s peak phase and plays an important role of bridging the tropical convection and mid-latitude teleconnection. On one hand, the intensity of the NWP-AC is influenced by the interdecadal variation in a linkage between ENSO and the Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) variability, referring that a strong connection between the Pacific and Indian Oceans results in the strengthening of NWP-AC response to ENSO. On the other hand, the zonal displacement of the NWP-AC is associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). That is, the tropical Pacific mean state (i.e., zonal SST gradient between climatologically warm western Pacific and cold eastern Pacific)—strengthened by either the negative PDO phase or the positive AMO phase—drives the anomalous ENSO-induced convection to be shifted to the west. With this westward shift, the zonal center of the NWP-AC also migrates westward over the Philippine Islands and exerts stronger connection between ENSO and EAWM. In contrast, the relaxed zonal SST contrast associated with either the positive PDO phase or the negative AMO phase tends to exhibit weaker ENSO–EAWM relationship via both of eastward shifted zonal centers of the anomalous ENSO-induced convection and the NWP-AC. Finally, a series of the numerical experiments conducted by an atmospheric general circulation model supports the observational findings.

Modulation of Pacific Decadal Oscillation on the Relationship of El Niño with Southern China Rainfall During Early Boreal Winter

Abstract:The modulation of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on the relationship of El Niño with southern China rainfall during early boreal winter (November–December) is investigated in this study. When El Niño occurs in positive phase of PDO, significantly positive rainfall anomalies only appears over the southwestern part of southern China. When El Niño occurs in negative phase of PDO, pronounced positive rainfall anomalies are observed over almost the whole southern China. Further analyses revealed that the anomalous Philippine Sea anticyclone (PSAC) and local meridional circulation play an important role in modulating the relationship of El Niño with southern China rainfall by PDO. During the negative PDO phase, under the combined influence of tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean dipole sea surface temperature anomalies pattern, the anomalous PSAC over the western North Pacific and rising motion associated with local meridional circulation over southern China provide sufficient water vapor and dynamical conditions for the formation of rainfall. During positive PDO phase, however, PSAC and local meridional circulation are only influenced by tropical Pacific and they become weak, not favoring the formation of southern China rainfall.
Interdecadal Variability of the ENSO–North Pacific Atmospheric Circulation in Winter

Abstract:The interdecadal change in the relationship between the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and atmospheric circulation over the North Pacific is investigated using both observational data and an atmospheric general circulation model. There are two prominent modes of winter mid-latitude atmospheric variability in the North Pacific: the West Pacific (WP) teleconnection and the Aleutian Low (AL). The relationship between ENSO and the WP-AL patterns changed notably around the late 1970s. From 1957 to 1975, during the mature phase of ENSO, significant sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) occurred, mainly in the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean; the associated atmospheric circulation anomaly pattern resembles the negative phase of a WP teleconnection pattern. In contrast, for the 1978-2011 period, significant negative SSTAs were observed in the western and extratropical Pacific in both hemispheres, with some significant positive SSTAs appearing over the eastern Pacific. This is in agreement with the defined regions of a mega-ENSO, the associated atmospheric circulation anomaly pattern resembles the AL mode. Further analysis suggests that a negative-positive anomaly pattern in the 500hPa geopotential height throughout the entire North Pacific, possibly enhanced by the SSTAs in the extratropical North Pacific associated with the mature phase of ENSO, is responsible for modulating the relationship between ENSO and the North Pacific atmospheric circulation. Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation modulates ENSO atmospheric anomaly amplitude in the tropical Pacific

Abstract:Abstract Previous studies have demonstrated that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) could affect the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) through thermocline adjustment, with a stronger ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) amplitude during a negative AMO phase than during a positive phase. In this study, we find that the ENSO atmospheric anomaly amplitudes in the tropical Pacific during different AMO phases are not necessarily consistent with these ENSO SST changes. For El Niño episodes, the low-level wind and precipitation anomalies over the tropical Pacific in the boreal winter are more pronounced during the negative AMO phase than during the positive phase, corresponding well to the stronger SST anomalies. However, La Niña events during the negative AMO phase are accompanied by weaker atmospheric anomalies in the tropical Pacific, although their SST anomalies are stronger than those during the positive phase. We suggest that this mismatch between La Niña SST and atmospheric anomalies can be largely attributed to AMO decadal modulation. A positive AMO favors intensified trade winds and weakened precipitation in the central tropical Pacific by modifying Walker circulation. Therefore, when La Niña coincides with a positive AMO, the low-level easterly and negative precipitation anomalies are superimposed, which gives rise to stronger atmospheric perturbations. In contrast, under a negative AMO background, the atmospheric anomalies induced by La Niña anomalous SST are partly counteracted by the AMO remote decadal modulation, thereby resulting in weaker anomaly amplitudes. Here, we highlight that AMO decadal forcing needs to be considered when investigating ENSO atmospheric variabilities and related regional climate impacts.

Abstract:The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a quasi-biennial band with a period of two to three years. This quasi-biennial (QB) component of ENSO is one of the main factors influencing the spring persistence barrier of ENSO, but its root cause remains unclear. We presented a quasi-biennial cyclical process between the tropics and extratropics, which suggests that the North Pacific Victoria mode (VM) has a key role in the quasi-biennial variability of ENSO. The negative North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) during winter induces a positive VM-associated sea surface temperature pattern in the subsequent spring, which, in turn, forces an El Niño pattern in the subsequent winter through surface air–sea coupling in the subtropical/tropical Pacific. Meanwhile, associated with warming in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific, a positive SLP anomaly occurs near the Hawaiian region, and a negative SLP anomaly occurs in high latitudes near the Aleutian Islands, which eventually leads to the emergence of a positive NPO over the North Pacific during the El Niño mature winter. The positive NPO can then produce a negative VM in the spring of the next year, which further forces cooling in the equatorial Pacific, initiating a La Niña event in the following winter. Our findings suggest that the impact of the VM should be considered when we focus on the quasi-biennial-type ENSO.

The Interdecadal Changes of South Pacific Sea Surface Temperature in the Mid-1990S and Their Connections with ENSO

Abstract:The characteristic changes of South Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) for the period January 1979 to December 2011, during which the 1990s Pacific pan-decadal variability (PDV) interdecadal regime shifts occurred, were examined. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was applied to the monthly mean SSTA for two sub-periods: January 1979 to December 1994 (P1) and January 1996 to December 2011 (P2). Both the spatial and temporal features of the leading EOF mode for P1 and P2 showed a remarkable difference. The spatial structure of the leading EOF changed from a tripolar pattern for P1 (EOF-P1) to a dipole-like pattern for P2 (EOF-P2). Besides, EOF-P1 (EOF-P2) had significant spectral peaks at 4.6 yr (2.7 yr). EOF-P2 not only had a closer association with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), but also showed a faster response to ENSO than EOF-P1 based on their lead-lag relationships with ENSO. During the development of ENSO, the South Pacific SSTA associated with ENSO for both P1 and P2 showed a significant eastward propagation. However, after the peak of ENSO, EOF-P1 showed a stronger persistence than EOF-P2, which still showed eastward propagation. The variability of the SSTA associated with the whole process of ENSO evolution during P1 and the SSTA associated with the development of ENSO during P2 support the existence of ocean-to-atmosphere forcing, but the SSTA associated with the decay of ENSO shows the phenomenon of atmosphere-to-ocean forcing.
Pdo-Related Wintertime Atmospheric Anomalies Over The Midlatitude North Pacific: Local Versus Remote Sst Forcing

Abstract:Observed wintertime atmospheric anomalies over the central North Pacific associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) are characterized by a cold/trough (warm/ridge) structure, that is, an anomalous equivalent barotropic low (high) over a negative (positive) sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly. While the midlatitude atmosphere has its own strong internal variabilities, to what degree local SST anomalies can affect the midlatitude atmospheric variability remains unclear. To identify such an impact, three atmospheric general circulation model experiments each having a 63-yr-long simulation are conducted. The control run forced by observed global SST reproduces well the observed PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) structure. However, the removal of the midlatitude North Pacific SST variabilities in the first sensitivity run reduces the atmospheric response by roughly one-third. In the second sensitivity run in which large-scale North Pacific SST variabilities are mostly kept, but their frontal-scale meridional gradients are sharply smoothed, simulated PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) anomalies are also reduced by nearly one-third. Dynamical diagnoses exhibit that such a reduction is primarily due to the weakened transient eddy activities that are induced by weakened meridional SST gradient anomalies, in which the transient eddy vorticity forcing plays a crucial role. Therefore, it is suggested that midlatitude North Pacific SST anomalies make a considerable (approximately one-third) contribution to the observed PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) anomalies in which the frontal-scale meridional SST gradient (oceanic front) is a key player, although most of those atmospheric anomalies are determined by the SST variabilities outside of the midlatitude North Pacific.
The modulation of Pacific Decadal Oscillation on ENSO-East Asian summer monsoon relationship over the past half-millennium

Abstract:Monsoon precipitation affects natural and social systems in East Asia, one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Monsoon precipitation variability is strongly influenced by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and may be related to the phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). However, a collective understanding of the long-term PDO-ENSO-monsoon relationship remains limited because related studies are almost exclusively based on short instrumental records. Although paleoclimate proxies for PDO and ENSO are currently available, there is a lack of high-quality proxies for East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) precipitation. Moreover, the strengthening of the ENSO-EASM relationship since the 1970s has raised the question of anthropogenic impact. Reconstructing EASM precipitation is thus crucial to understanding its variability under natural and anthropogenic forcings. In this study, we addressed these challenges using tree ring oxygen isotopes of red cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis Matsum), a long-lived endemic tree species in Taiwan. We developed an annual-resolved and well-validated EASM precipitation proxy from 1533 CE to 2011 which explained 49 % of the variance in instrumental precipitation. In comparison with multiple paleoclimate proxies, we revealed that PDO persistently modulated the ENSO-EASM relationship over the past half-millennium. The ENSO-EASM relationship was enhanced during the positive PDO phases and dynamically weakened during the negative PDO phases, notably in the early-17th, 18th, and early to mid-20th centuries. The strengthened relationship since the 1970s concurred with an unusually high PDO and ENSO and fell within its natural variability. Nevertheless, as the amplitude of the PDO is predicted to weaken under warming, the modulation effects may become less predictable.

Abstract:Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) has been regarded as one of the most important interdecadal factors to the interdecadal summer precipitation in eastern China, which, however, cannot keep a consistent pattern during the same positive or negative PDO phase. Because sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies vary along with PDO evolvement, the PDO impacts are investigated in terms of developing and decaying stages of its positive and negative phases, respectively. It is found that the SST cooling in mid-latitude North Pacific and SST warming in off-equator central-eastern Pacific are generally intensified from the developing stage to the decaying stage for positive PDO phase, and vice versa. Particularly, during the decaying stage of positive (negative) PDO phase, the enhanced SST warming (cooling) in northeastern tropical Pacific triggers a stronger (weaker) large-scale Walker circulation and suppresses (enhances) the convective activities in western tropical Pacific, which favors a meridional wave train like East Asia–Pacific (EAP) teleconnection over East Asia. Meanwhile, the westward extended SST cooling (warming) in mid-latitude North Pacific together with the SST warming (cooling) to its south significantly increases (decreases) the meridional SST gradient and low-level atmospheric baroclinicity, conductive to the strengthened (weakened) and southward (northward) shifted East Asian subtropical westerly jet as well as an equivalent barotropic “cold trough” in western North Pacific. Because of such tropical and extratropical dynamical processes, a meridional tripole pattern of precipitation anomalies occurs in eastern China which dominates the PDO impact in the same phase and distinctly different from the dipole pattern during the developing stage.
