Abstract:On and off: ester hydrolysis catalyzed by a Zn(II) -coordinated β-cyclodextrin dimer can be switched on and off using light in the presence of gold nanoparticles with azobenzene units attached to their surfaces. Under visible light, the azobenzene units are trans and bind tightly to the dimer, thus leading to reduced catalysis. Under UV light, the azobenzene units are cis and bind loosely to the dimer, thus allowing substrates to bind and hydrolysis to occur.

Abstract:The rise of supramolecular chemistry has drawn great attention to the designed self‐assembly of synthetic molecules. Supramolecular self‐assembly has become an efficient strategy in constructing well‐ordered nanostructures using a bottom‐up way in material science and has also shown its great potential in biological applications. Photochromic compounds are small organic molecules which can undergo reversible photochemical reactions between two chemical species with distinct properties. They have been incorporated into various materials for applications including optical devices, data recording and storage, smart polymers, and so forth. Introducing photochromic compounds into supramolecular self‐assembling systems endows the supramolecular nanostructures or materials with intriguing responsive behavior to light, which can be conveniently orthogonal to other stimuli. From another perspective, the well‐ordered supramolecular structures or materials with complexity and stimuli‐responsive properties have the capability to “amplify” the light‐controlled isomerization by transforming it into other signals, thus producing more sophisticated functions. This review mainly highlights the recent advances and emerging fields in fabricating artificial supramolecular self‐assembling systems with photochromic compounds as light‐responsive units. Important design principles, mechanisms and concepts, as well as challenges and perspectives are illustrated and discussed.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive behaviour is key to the design of smart materials, surfaces, nano-systems and effector molecules, allowing their application as switchable catalysts, molecular transporters, bioimaging probes or caged drugs. Supramolecular chemistry has embraced the widespread integration of photoswitches because of their precise spatiotemporal addressability and waste-free nature. In the vibrant area of discrete metal-mediated self-assembly, however, photoswitches are still rarely employed. Only recently has it been shown that embedding photoswitches into the organic backbones of coordination cages enables control of their host and material properties and thus unlocks the hitherto unexploited dynamic adaptivity of such systems. Here we discuss four cases where triggering ligand-integrated photoswitches leads to (1) control over disassembly/reassembly, (2) bi-stable switching between defined states, (3) interplay with thermal processes in metastable systems and (4) light-fuelled dissipative self-assembly. We highlight first clues concerning the relationship between fundamental photophysics and dynamic assembly equilibria and propose directions for future development.

Abstract:The ability of molecular photoswitches to convert on/off responses into large macroscale property change is fundamental to light-responsive materials. However, moving beyond simple binary responses necessitates the introduction of new elements that control the chemistry of the photoswitching process at the molecular scale. To achieve this goal, we designed, synthesized and developed a single photochrome, based on a modified donor–acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA), capable of independently addressing multiple molecular states. The multi-stage photoswitch enables complex switching phenomena. To demonstrate this, we show spatial control of the transformation of a three-stage photoswitch by tuning the population of intermediates along the multi-step reaction pathway of the DASAs without interfering with either the first or final stage. This allows for a photonic three-stage logic gate where the secondary wavelength solely negates the input of the primary wavelength. These results provide a new strategy to move beyond traditional on/off binary photochromic systems and enable the design of future molecular logic systems.

Abstract:Conformational regulation among two or more distant sites is not only one of the main pathways to accomplish multiple tasks in complex biological systems but also represents a powerful strategy to obtain stimuli-responsive supramolecular nanoconstructs with tailored physicochemical performance. We herein report the fabrication of a photochromic supramolecular assembly, which can be synergistically activated by the conformational regulation with bis(4,8-disulfonato-1,5-naphtho)-32-crown-8 and then reversibly switched by the through-space communication between restricted stilbazolium salt and photochromic dithienylethene. This work demonstrates that the synergistic conformational modulation via intra- and intermolecular interactions can be developed as a generalizable approach to construct more advanced biomimetic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Light-triggered molecular switches are extensively researched for their applications in medicine, chemistry and material science and, if combined, particularly for their use in multifunctional smart materials, for which orthogonally, i.e. individually, addressable photoswitches are needed. In such a multifunctional mixture, the switching properties, efficiencies and the overall performance may be impaired by undesired mutual dependences of the photoswitches on each other. Within this study, we compare the performance of the pure photoswitches, namely an azobenzene derivative (Azo) and a donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA), with the switching properties of their mixture using time-resolved temperature-dependent UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy, time-resolved IR absorption spectroscopy at room temperature and quantum mechanical calculations to determine effective cross sections, switching kinetics as well as activation energies of thermally induced steps. We find slightly improved effective cross sections, percentages of switched molecules and no increased activation barriers of the equimolar mixture compared to the single compounds. Thus, the studied mixture Azo+DASA is very promising for future applications in multifunctional smart materials.

Abstract:The C═C photoswitching molecules [1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (DPE), 4-styrylpyridine (SP), and trans-1,2-stilbene (TS)] show favorable photoisomerization characteristics. Although the solid states of photoswitching molecules are usually used in optical devices, their excited state's evolution has been little explored. Here, the excited state's relaxation of DPE, SP, and TS in nanocrystal/microcrystal suspensions as well as in solution phase was studied to uncover the early events of their excited states. The dynamics of nanocrystal/microcrystal suspensions was tremendously accelerated in comparison to the kinetics obtained in the solution for these molecules under excitation. DPE exhibits the slowest decay rate, while SP shows the fastest decay rate in nanocrystal suspensions or solution, suggesting SP may be the best candidate for the photoswitching device. The intermolecular interactions and space restriction of the crystal lead to the acceleration of the excited state's evolution for DPE, SP, and TS. This provides new insight into the design of optical materials.

Abstract:A photo‐switched supramolecular luminescent assembly is constructed, showing both aggregation‐induced emission and photo/chemical dual responsive properties. Such orthogonal stimulations allow for photo‐induced fluorescence on/off and locking/unlocking information by base/acid treatment, with apparent fluorescent self‐feedback. This study realizes the rarely reported but very important locking/unlocking information of photo‐controlled fluorescence and self‐feedback functions, providing a promising step for multifunctional intelligent supramolecular luminescent devices. The development of multifunctional photo‐controlled luminescent switch, which provides versatile tools for smart systems and advanced organic luminescent materials, is of paramount significance. Herein, a photoswitchable supramolecular assembly is constructed from the noncovalent interaction of cyanostilbene‐bridged bis(dibenzo‐24‐crown‐8) with a diarylethene derivative. Possessing the reversible photoisomerization property and a high Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency, the resultant supramolecular assembly can reversibly switch on/off the luminescence of the cyanostilbene group upon irradiation by different wavelength light and the addition of acid/base both in solution and in the solid state. Significantly, the characters written with the supramolecular assembly as ink can be reversibly and repeatedly erased and recovered by altering the wavelength of irradiation light.

Abstract:The competition between polymer chain folding and aggregation is a critical structuring process that determines the physical properties of synthetic and biopolymers. However, supramolecular polymer systems that exhibit both processes have not yet been reported. We herein introduce a system in which folded supramolecular polymers spontaneously undergo interchain aggregation due to a rearrangement in internal molecular order, converting them into crystalline aggregates. These folded supramolecular polymers slowly crystallize over the course of half a day, due to their characteristic higher-order structures. However, the photoisomerization of the trans-azobenzene incorporated into the monomer to the cis isomer leads to unfolding of the polymer, accelerating the intrachain and interchain molecular ordering to a few hours. The intermediate structures visualized by AFM demonstrate that the unfolding is coupled with interchain aggregation.

Abstract:The supramolecular self-assembly and disassembly that are responsive to external stimuli are of critical importance to the design and synthesis of functional supramolecular materials. In this work, we performed a coarse-grained molecular dynamics study of photo-controlled assembly and disassembly on a timescale of ten microseconds. The spontaneous assembly of cis-AzoC10, trans-AzoC10, and cis-AzoC10/alpha-CD into micelle-like aggregates, and the disassembly of trans-AzoC10/alpha-CD starting from a pre-assembled micelle were directly simulated. Our results of simulations have revealed a significant size and shape dependence of aggregates on the molecular structure and concentrations of monomers. As demonstrated, with careful design, coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations are useful in the study of controlled assembly and disassembly to bridge the gap between atomistic simulations and experiments.

Abstract:Covalently linked π-stacked dimers represent the most significant platform for elucidating the relationship between molecular alignments and their properties. Here, we present the one-pot synthesis of two intramolecularly π-stacked dimers and disclose how intramolecular stacking modes dictate photoswitching properties. The dimer, which features cofacially stacked chromophores and geometrically favours intramolecular photochemical [2 + 2] cycloadditions, displays a nearly irreversible photoswitching behaviour. By contrast, the dimer, bearing crosswise stacked chromophores, is geometrically unfavourable for the cycloaddition and exhibits a highly reversible photoswitching process, in which the homolysis and reformation of carbon−carbon single bonds are involved. Moreover, the chiral carbon centres of both dimers endow these photoswitches with chirality and the separated enantiomers exhibit tuneable chiroptical properties by photoswitching. This work reveals that intramolecular stacking modes significantly influence the photochemical properties of π-stacked dimers and offers a design strategy toward chiral photoswitchable materials.

Abstract:Photochromic materials are those which can undergo reversible photo-switches between two different states or isomers upon alternative irradiation with different wavelengths of light accompanied by distinct photophysical and photochemical properties. Inspired by their special photo-switchable characteristics, a variety of light-driven functional materials have been exploited, such as ultrahigh-density optical data storage, molecular switches, logic gates, molecular wires, optic/electronic devices, multi-photon devices, surface/nanoparticle devices, liquid crystals, bio-imaging and so on. Apart from these, further creation of optoelectronic and photo-optical devices based on photochromic molecular switches which operate at both molecular and supramolecular levels have recently attracted many attentions. Thus photo-switchable compounds also have played an important role in sensing, self-assembly, aggregation-induced enhanced emission and photo-controlled biological systems. In particular, dithienylethene derivatives are one of the most promising families of photochromic compounds due to their excellent thermal-stability, remarkable fatigue-resistance, rapid response and fairly high photocyclization quantum yields as well as reactivity in the solid state. According to our recent research achievements, this article provides an overview of recent exciting progress mainly in the field of photochromic dithienylethene derivatives, from systems in solution to modified functional surfaces. Furthermore, based on current development of these photo-switchable systems, further development as well as existing challenges are also discussed and put in prospect.

Abstract:Covalent or noncovalent linked polymers with stimuli-responsive properties have been well researched as a kind of advanced functional materials. However, little effort has been devoted to establishing a bridge for switching between covalent polymers and noncovalent polymers. Actually, such unitive. system is promising because it can combine their chemical advantages of two types of polymers in a single and tunable platform. Herein, by taking advantage of reversible photodimerization of coumarins and host guest assemblies with gamma-cyclodextrin (gamma-CD), we demonstrate a simple and effective way to construct a dual modality supramolecular polymer, which can be switched between a noncovalent polymer and its corresponding covalent polymer in response to light stimuli. Moreover, this unique switchable polymer can also be employed to construct a dual-stimuli responsive supramolecular hydrogel with the surfactant cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). This methodology establishes a bridge between the two "polymer mansions" and is promising to open a new class of photoswitchable materials.

Abstract:Multiphotochromic systems are of immense importance for promising applications nowadays, while it remains a formidable challenge to develop a compound containing various photoswitches with spectral complementarity. Herein, we describe a novel multiphotochromic system based on a first generation donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) and an aurone, in which all physicochemical properties of two photoswitches are preserved and four isomers are selectively reachable with three different wavelengths of light sources (365 nm, 430 nm, 585 nm) and a thermal relaxation process in an orthogonal manner. Multi-addressable behavior of the system could be beneficial for potential applications such as logic devices and photo-printing.

Abstract:A novel supramolecular photoswitch containing bisthienylethene-pyridine (BTEPy) and carboxyl attached tetrathiafluvalene (TTF–COOH) was constructed via intermolecular hydrogen bond. FT-IR spectra, XPS characterizations, 1H NMR and theoretical calculation were carried out to verify the formation of the intermolecular hydrogen bond. The supramolecular self-assemblies BTEPy·2TTF show good photochromic properties. A molecular switch with UV/vis light as inputs and electrochemical signals as outputs was obtained.

Abstract:The design and application of molecular photoswitches have attracted much attention. Herein, we performed a detailed computational study on the photoswitch benzylidene―oxazolone system based on static electronic structure calculations and on‐the‐fly excited‐state dynamic simulations. For the Z and E isomer, we located six and four minimum energy conical intersections (MECIs) between the first excited state (S1) and the ground state (S0), respectively. Among them, the relaxation pathway driven by ring‐puckering motion is the most competitive channel with the photoisomeization process, leading to the low photoisomerization quantum yield. In the dynamic simulations, about 88 % and 66 % trajectories decays from S1 to S0 for Z and E isomer, respectively within the total simulation time of ~2 ps. The photoisomeization quantum yields obtained in our study (0.20 for Z→E and 0.12 for E→Z) agree well with the experimental measured values (0.25 and 0.11), even though the number of trajectories are limited to 50. Our study sheds light on the complexity of the benzylidene―oxazolone system 's deactivation process and the competitive mechanisms among different reaction channels, which provide theoretical guidance for further design and development of benzylidene―oxazolone based molecular photoswitches.

Abstract:Supramolecular assemblies have attracted great attention in the latest studies of molecular electronic devices for their superiorities. Here, we design a non-covalent [π⋯π] dimer made of DCV4Ts (two-terminally dicyanovinyl-substituted quaterthiophenes), and five typical conformations of this dimer are specifically focused on. Based on density-functional theory calculations and the non-equilibrium Green's function technique, electron transport properties through the dimer are mainly investigated in molecular junctions. It is revealed that four distinct states of conductance can be observed through these five conformations, with the maximal ON/OFF ratio over 400 and the minimal one around 10. The multiple states of conductance basically stem from the destructive quantum interference and the spatial overlap of the two DCV4T monomers. To implement the above-indicated molecular switch in experiments, it is essential to mechanically stretch or compress the designed dimer, probably using the piezo-modulated scanning tunneling microscope based break-junction technique.
