Abstract:Oscillations occur naturally in many systems (in heart muscles, fireflies, and Josephson junctions, for example). When many oscillators are coupled together, complicated collective behaviour such as wave propagation can emerge. A new phenomenon has been predicted for some sets of oscillators, when there is a time-delay in their coupling: they can drive each other to stop oscillating.

Abstract:The dynamics of a symmetric network of oscillators that are mutually coupled via multiple dynamical components with mismatched delays is studied. We find that networked oscillators experience oscillation death (OD) over a much larger domain of parameters when their different dynamical components are linked with mismatched delays than with only one delay. In particular, if the delays are mismatched by retaining a certain bias, OD is proved to be linearly stable even for very large delays for an arbitrary symmetric network. Further, we show that the minimal value of the intrinsic frequency necessary to induce OD decreases as the degree of mismatch in the coupling delays increases. The stabilizing effect of multicomponent coupling with mismatched delays is shown to be valid in networked chaotic oscillators also. The proposed coupling strategy can possibly be applied in controlling several pathological activities in neuronal systems and in engineering applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the transition between different oscillation suppression, revival of oscillation, and oscillatory states in time-delayed chaotic oscillators coupled through simultaneous diffusive and environmental coupling. The present paper, for the first time, reports the occurrence of oscillation death and nontrivial amplitude death states in coupled intrinsic time-delayed systems. Moreover, we explore the revival of the oscillations from these diverse oscillation suppression states. We analyze the stability of the coupled time-delayed system and through extensive numerical investigations, we delineate all the dynamical states in the parameter space. The study is extended to a network of time-delayed oscillators and identical transition scenarios have been obtained. Finally, we support our results in an electronic hardware circuit-based experiment and demonstrate that all the transition scenarios are robust enough in a real world system where the presence of noise, fluctuations, and parameter mismatch are inevitable.

Abstract:The effects of a distributed 'weak generic kernel' delay on cyclically coupled limit cycle and chaotic oscillators are considered. For coupled Van der Pol oscillators (and in fact, other oscillators as well) the delay can produce transitions from amplitude death(AD) or oscillation death (OD) to Hopf bifurcation-induced periodic behavior, with the delayed limit cycle shrinking or growing as the delay is varied towards or away from the bifurcation point respectively. The transition from AD to OD is mediated here via a pitchfork bifurcation, as seen earlier for other couplings as well. Also, the cyclically coupled undelayed van der Pol system here is already in a state of AD/OD, and introducing the delay allows both oscillations and AD/OD as the delay parameter is varied. This is in contrast to other limit cycle systems, where diffusive coupling alone does not result in the onset of AD/OD. For systems where the individual oscillators are chaotic, such as a Sprott oscillator system or a coupled van der Pol-Rayleigh system with parametric forcing, the delay may produce AD/OD (as in the Sprott case), with the AD to OD transition now occurring via a transcritical bifurcation instead. However, this may not be possible, and the delay might just vary the attractor shape. In either of these situations however, increased delay strength tends to cause the system to have simpler behavior, streamlining the shape of the attractor, or shrinking it in cases with oscillations.

Abstract:Symmetrically coupled oscillators represent a limiting case for studying the dynamics of natural systems. Therefore, we here investigate the effect of coupling asymmetry on delay-induced oscillation death ( OD) in coupled nonlinear oscillators. It is found that the asymmetrical coupling substantially enlarges the domain of the OD island in the parameter space. Specifically, when the intensity of asymmetry is enhanced by turning down the value of the coupling asymmetry parameter alpha, the OD island gradually expands along two directions of both the coupling delay and the coupling strength. The expansion behavior of the OD region is well characterized by a power law scaling, R = alpha(gamma) with gamma approximate to -1.19. The minimum value of the intrinsic frequency, for which OD is possible, monotonically decreases with decreasing alpha and saturates around a constant value in the limit of alpha -> 0. The generality of the conducive effect of coupling asymmetry is confirmed in a numerical study of two delay-coupled chaotic Rossler oscillators. Our findings shed an improved light on the understanding of dynamics in asymmetrically delay-coupled systems.

Abstract:Oscillation death (also called amplitude death), a phenomenon of coupling induced stabilization of an unstable equilibrium, is studied for an arbitrary symmetric complex network with delay-coupled oscillators, and the critical conditions for its linear stability are explicitly obtained. All cases including one oscillator, a pair of oscillators, regular oscillator networks, and complex oscillator networks with delay feedback coupling, can be treated in a unified form. For an arbitrary symmetric network, we find that the corresponding smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian lambda(N) (0 > lambda(N) >= -1) completely determines the death island, and as lambda(N) is located within the insensitive parameter region for nearly all complex networks, the death island keeps nearly the largest and does not sensitively depend on the complex network structures. This insensitivity effect has been tested for many typical complex networks including Watts-Strogatz (WS) and Newman-Watts (NW) small world networks, general scale-free (SF) networks, Erdos-Renyi (ER) random networks, geographical networks, and networks with community structures and is expected to be helpful for our understanding of dynamics on complex networks. Cooperative Motion Of Coupled Limit Cycle Oscillators With Delay

Abstract:The cooperative behavior of a large number of coupled limit cycle oscillators has been widely applied in physical, chemical and biological problems. Time-delay is a crucial factor in information transmission. In this paper, we analyze the effects of variable parameters on global coupled limit cycle oscillators for the model of group motion. The phenomenon of amplitude death indicates that the dynamics of coupled oscillators are out of order caused by time-delay. Then the cooperative motion and complex motion corresponding to the dynamics of collective behaviors is solved by an effective method Perturbation Increment Scheme (PIS). The solutions of n-dimensional limit cycle oscillators with delay obtained in this paper correspond to different cooperative dynamic behaviors, including self-organization, cooperation and complex motion. Our research can be applied in a mass of biological, chemical and physics fields such as coupled laser oscillators, self-excited circuits and pacemaker locomotion.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the impacts of both propagation and processing delays on the emergences of amplitude death (AD) and oscillation death (OD) in one system of two Stuart-Landau oscillators with symmetry-breaking coupling. In either the absence of or the presence of propagation delay, the processing delay destabilizes both AD and OD by revoking the stability of the stable homogenous and inhomogenous steady states. In the AD to OD transition, the processing delay destabilizes first OD from large values of coupling strength until its stable regime completely disappears and then AD from both the upper and lower bounds of the stable coupling interval. Our numerical study sheds new insight lights on the understanding of nontrivial effects of time delays on dynamic activity of coupled nonlinear systems.

Abstract:We consider the interaction of a large number of limit-cycle oscillators with linear, all-to-all coupling and a distribution of natural frequencies. The system exhibits extremely rich dynamics as the coupling strength and the width of the frequency distribution are varied. We find a variety of steady behaviors that can be described by a stationary distribution in phase space: frequency locking, amplitude death, incoherence and partial locking. An unexpected result is that the system can also exhibit unsteady behavior, in which the phase space distribution evolves periodically, quasiperiodically or even chaotically. The simple form of the model allows us to derive several analytical results. The stability boundaries of amplitude death and incoherence are found explicitly. Rigorous results on the existence and stability of frequency locking are also obtained.

Abstract:Amplitude death (AD) is an emergent phenomenon whereby two or more autonomously oscillating systems completely lose their oscillations due to coupling. In this work, we study AD in nonlinear oscillators with mixed time-delayed coupling, which is a combination of instantaneous and time-delayed couplings. We find that the mixed time-delayed coupling favors the onset of AD for a larger set of parameters than in the limiting cases of purely instantaneous or completely time-delayed coupling. Coupled identical oscillators experience AD under instantaneous coupling mixed with a small proportion of time-delayed coupling. Our work gives a deeper understanding of delay-induced AD in coupled nonlinear oscillators.

Abstract:We analyze a large system of limit-cycle oscillators with mean-field coupling and randomly distributed natural frequencies. We prove that when the coupling is sufficiently strong and the distribution of frequencies has sufficiently large variance, the system undergoes “amplitude death”-the oscillators pull each other off their limit cycles and into the origin, which in this case is astable equilibrium point for the coupled system. We determine the region in couplingvariance space for which amplitude death is stable, and present the first proof that the infinite system provides an accurate picture of amplitude death in the large but finite system.

Abstract:Extensive studies of coupled dynamical systems have shown that under certain underlying interactions, all the individual subsystems may cease totally their intrinsic oscillations and are stabilized to a homogeneous steady state, which is known as amplitude death (AD). The presence of higher-order many-body interactions can overcome the limitation of first-order pairwise interactions, and more vividly model the emergent dynamics in real-world systems. However, it is still unclear whether and under which conditions AD can be achieved in the presence of higher-order interactions. In this work, by considering a simplicial complex of coupled Stuart–Landau oscillators, we investigate the impacts of first-order (pairwise) and second-order (three-body) interactions on the emergence of AD dynamics. The results show clear evidence that the higher-order interactions can facilitate the onset of AD dynamics with a lower coupling strength. In particular, we first derive the necessary condition to determine the onset of AD by performing linear stability analysis. Then we show, via numerical simulations, that AD can be achieved by either first-order or second-order interactions only, and the required coupling strength of first-order interactions is much higher than the second-order ones. Finally, we conclude that the physical mechanism is due to the reflection of interaction units between oscillators, that is, the network with second-order interactions allows the nodes to involve more interactions simultaneously than the one with first-order interactions. These results shed a new insight into the generation of AD phenomenon and reveal that the higher-order interactions can serve as a rather efficient approach to quench the rhythmic activities.

Abstract:Explosive death in coupled nonlinear oscillators has been an active area of extensive research in nonlinear dynamics in the recent decades. Depending on proper choice of network topology, coupling scenarios, and feedback strength, explosive death can be revealed. In this work, for the first time, we report the effect of delayed feedback on the death behavior in an ensemble of identical mean-field coupled van der Pol oscillators. In both systems with or without time delay, the normalized amplitude exhibits an abrupt transition between the oscillatory state and the death state. intriguingly, the presence of time delay in the coupling may induce the normalized amplitude of all oscillators in the network to experience a step-like descent with small jumps in approaching the death state, pulling back the forward and backward transition points. The backward transition point has been explicitly obtained, which is confirmed by the numerical results.

Abstract:We analyze a large system of nonlinear oscillators with random pinning, mean-field coupling and external drive. For small coupling and drive strength, the system evolves to an incoherent pinned state, with all the oscillators stuck at random phases. As the coupling or drive strength is increased beyond a depinning treshold, the steady-state solution switches to a coherent moving state, with all the oscillators moving nearly in phase. This depinning transition is discontinuous and hysteretic. We also show analytically that there is a delayed onset of coherence in response to a sudden superthreshold drive. The time delay increases as the threshold is approached from above. The discontinuous, hysteretic transition and the delayed onset of coherence are directly attributable to the form of the coupling, which is periodic in the phase difference between oscillators.The system studied here provides a simple model of charge …

Abstract:We analyze amplitude death (AD) in large systems of globally coupled oscillators with randomly distributed time scales. We show that the distribution of characteristic eigenvalues of a large but finite system is well approximated by the continuous and discrete spectra of the system in the thermodynamic limit. The stability analysis from the continuous and discrete spectra of the infinite system provides a fairly accurate prediction for the onset of AD in the large finite system. We prove the argument by examining the stability of AD in a paradigmatic system of coupled Stuart-Landau limit cycles with mismatched time scales. The proposed technique is extended to systems of globally coupled nonlinear oscillators of a general form with time-scale diversity, which is verified in coupled chaotic Rossler oscillators. Our study provides analytical insight into the understanding of the emergence of AD in populations of globally coupled dynamical systems.

Abstract:By introducing a processing delay in the coupling, we find that it can effectively annihilate the quenching of oscillation, amplitude death (AD), in a network of coupled oscillators by switching the stability of AD. It revives the oscillation in the AD regime to retain sustained rhythmic functioning of the networks, which is in sharp contrast to the propagation delay with the tendency to induce AD. This processing delay-induced phenomenon occurs both with and without the propagation delay. Further this effect is rather general from two coupled to networks of oscillators in all known scenarios that can exhibit AD, and it has a wide range of applications where sustained oscillations should be retained for proper functioning of the systems.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate gradient coupling effect on oscillation death in a ring of N delay-coupled oscillators. We find that the gradient coupling monotonically reduces the domain of death island in the parameter space of the diffusive coupling and time delay, and thus the death island can be completely eliminated once the gradient coupling strength exceeds a certain threshold, whose value is found to be a constant if N is sufficiently large. For two special cases, a ring with zero gradient coupling and a one-way ring for identical diffusive and gradient couplings, all previous results in the literature are recovered. In particular, for the one-way ring, a size effect of N is discovered, which indicates that under this situation the death can always be eliminated if N is above a critical N(max). All the described results are proved to hold generally in coupled oscillator systems.

Abstract:We generalize the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators to allow time-delayed interactions. New phenomena include bistability between synchronized and incoherent states, and unsteady solutions with time-dependent order parameters. We derive exact formulas for the stability boundaries of the incoherent and synchronized states, as a function of the delay, in the special case where the oscillators are identical. The experimental implications of the model are discussed for populations of chirping crickets, where the finite speed of sound causes communication delays, and for physical systems such as coupled phase-locked loops or lasers.

Abstract:Hamiltonian systems, when coupled {\it via} time--delayed interactions, do not remain conservative. In the uncoupled system, the motion can typically be periodic, quasiperiodic or chaotic. This changes drastically when delay coupling is introduced since now attractors can be created in the phase space. In particular for sufficiently strong coupling there can be amplitude death (AD), namely the stabilization of point attractors and the cessation of oscillatory motion. The approach to the state of AD or oscillation death is also accompanied by a phase--flip in the transient dynamics. A discussion and analysis of the phenomenology is made through an application to the specific cases of harmonic as well as anharmoniccoupled oscillators, in particular the Hénon-Heiles system.

Abstract:A coupling phase is deemed to be crucial in stabilizing behavior in nonlinear systems. In this paper, we study how the coupling phase influences the delay-induced oscillation death (OD) in coupled oscillators. The OD boundaries are identified analytically even in the presence of the coupling phase. We find that OD only occurs for a coupling phase belonging to a certain interval. The optimal coupling phase, under which the largest OD island forms, is characterized well by a power law scaling with respect to the frequency. The coupling phase turns out to be a key parameter that determines a delay-induced OD. Furthermore, the controlling role of the coupling phase generally is proved to hold fairly for networked delay-coupled oscillators.
