Abstract:Abstract The global physical and biogeochemical environment has been substantially altered in response to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases from human activities. In 2023, the sea surface temperature (SST) and upper 2000 m ocean heat content (OHC) reached record highs. The 0–2000 m OHC in 2023 exceeded that of 2022 by 15 ± 10 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules) (updated IAP/CAS data); 9 ± 5 ZJ (NCEI/NOAA data). The Tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the 1950s. Associated with the onset of a strong El Niño, the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of ∼0.23°C higher than 2022 and an astounding > 0.3°C above 2022 values for the second half of 2023. The density stratification and spatial temperature inhomogeneity indexes reached their highest values in 2023.

Abstract:The world's oceans are under threat from the prevalence of heatwaves caused by climate change. Despite this, there is a lack of understanding regarding their impact on seawater oxygen levels - a crucial element in sustaining biological survival. Here, we find that heatwaves can trigger low-oxygen extreme events, thereby amplifying the signal of deoxygenation. By utilizing in situ observations and state-of-the-art climate model simulations, we provide a global assessment of the relationship between the two types of extreme events in the surface ocean (0-10 m). Our results show compelling evidence of a remarkable surge in the co-occurrence of marine heatwaves and low-oxygen extreme events. Hotspots of these concurrent stressors are identified in the study, indicating that this intensification is more pronounced in high-biomass regions than in those with relatively low biomass. The rise in the compound events is primarily attributable to long-term warming primarily induced by anthropogenic forcing, in tandem with natural internal variability modulating their spatial distribution. Our findings suggest the ocean is losing its breath under the influence of heatwaves, potentially experiencing more severe damage than previously anticipated.

Abstract:Heatwaves are important climatic extremes in atmospheric and oceanic systems that can have devastating and long-term impacts on ecosystems, with subsequent socioeconomic consequences. Recent prominent marine heatwaves have attracted considerable scientific and public interest. Despite this, a comprehensive assessment of how these ocean temperature extremes have been changing globally is missing. Using a range of ocean temperature data including global records of daily satellite observations, daily in situ measurements and gridded monthly in situ-based data sets, we identify significant increases in marine heatwaves over the past century. We find that from 1925 to 2016, global average marine heatwave frequency and duration increased by 34% and 17%, respectively, resulting in a 54% increase in annual marine heatwave days globally. Importantly, these trends can largely be explained by increases in mean ocean temperatures, suggesting that we can expect further increases in marine heatwave days under continued global warming.

Abstract:Satellite observations of sea surface temperature (SST) show that SST in 2004, 2006, and 2016 broke the previous record in the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS). The underlying cause of the record-breaking SSTs in the YECS is still under debate. Our analysis results demonstrate that enhanced solar radiation and weakened wind, due to a high-pressure system over the YECS splitting from the western Pacific subtropical high, were mainly responsible for the record-breaking SSTs in these 3 years. The enhanced solar radiation and weakened wind both depressed oceanic turbulent mixing, and more heat was concentrated in a shallower mixed layer, inducing an anomalous SST rise and resulting in the record-breaking SSTs.

Abstract:Mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in Australia between 2016 and 2024 was driven by high sea surface temperatures (SST)1. The likelihood of temperature-induced bleaching is a key determinant for the future threat status of the GBR2, but the long-term context of recent temperatures in the region is unclear. Here we show that the January-March Coral Sea heat extremes in 2024, 2017 and 2020 (in order of descending mean SST anomalies) were the warmest in 400 years, exceeding the 95th-percentile uncertainty limit of our reconstructed pre-1900 maximum. The 2016, 2004 and 2022 events were the next warmest, exceeding the 90th-percentile limit. Climate model analysis confirms that human influence on the climate system is responsible for the rapid warming in recent decades. This attribution, together with the recent ocean temperature extremes, post-1900 warming trend and observed mass coral bleaching, shows that the existential threat to the GBR ecosystem from anthropogenic climate change is now realized. Without urgent intervention, the iconic GBR is at risk of experiencing temperatures conducive to near-annual coral bleaching3, with negative consequences for biodiversity and ecosystems services. A continuation on the current trajectory would further threaten the ecological function4 and outstanding universal value5 of one of Earth's greatest natural wonders.

Abstract:The Earth's oceans serve as vast heat storage reservoirs and the ocean currents, forming a heat transfer zone, act as a buffer for climate change. The oceans play a crucial role in the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle, interacting with the atmosphere. However, the increasing occurrence of heatwaves in recent years has disrupted the stability of the oceans and affected their function as a global thermostat. This paper examines relevant literature from the Web of Science database spanning from 1996 to 2023. Our analysis reveals the evolving research hotspots regarding the impact of heatwaves on ocean carbon sinks, progressing from "carbon dioxide - carbon emissions - ocean - seawater - organic matter - marine sediment" over the past decades. Keyword frequency and centrality analysis indicate a deepening focus in this field of study. The research areas primarily revolve around climate change, carbon dioxide, ocean variability, the influence of high temperatures on the carbon cycle, the weakening of the ocean carbon sink function, and ocean temperature. This study summarizes research findings on the mechanisms by which high temperature heatwaves affect ocean carbon sinks, alterations in ocean carbon cycle patterns, their impacts on marine ecosystems, and factors influencing seawater temperature and heatwave occurrence. Finally, the paper discusses novel findings in this field and proposes countermeasures to enhance ocean sink capacity amidst the warming trend.

Abstract:The ocean is the main source of thermal inertia in the climate system. Ocean heat uptake during recent decades has been quantified using ocean temperature measurements. However, these estimates all use the same imperfect ocean dataset and share additional uncertainty due to sparse coverage, especially before 2007. Here, we provide an independent estimate by using measurements of atmospheric oxygen (O 2 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) – levels of which increase as the ocean warms and releases gases – as a whole ocean thermometer. We show that the ocean gained 1.29 ± 0.79 × 10 22 Joules of heat per year between 1991 and 2016, equivalent to a planetary energy imbalance of 0.80 ± 0.49 W watts per square metre of Earth’s surface. We also find that the ocean-warming effect that led to the outgassing of O 2 and CO 2 can be isolated from the direct effects of anthropogenic emissions and CO 2 sinks. Our result – which relies on high-precision O 2 atmospheric measurements dating back to 1991 – leverages an integrative Earth system approach and provides much needed independent confirmation of heat uptake estimated from ocean data.

Abstract:Significance Since the 19th century, rising greenhouse gas concentrations have caused the ocean to absorb most of the Earth’s excess heat and warm up. Before the 1990s, most ocean temperature measurements were above 700 m and therefore, insufficient for an accurate global estimate of ocean warming. We present a method to reconstruct ocean temperature changes with global, full-depth ocean coverage, revealing warming of 436 × 10 21 J since 1871. Our reconstruction, which agrees with other estimates for the well-observed period, demonstrates that the ocean absorbed as much heat during 1921–1946 as during 1990–2015. Since the 1950s, up to one-half of excess heat in the Atlantic Ocean at midlatitudes has come from other regions via circulation-related changes in heat transport.

Abstract:As well as an increase in average ocean temperatures, marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent under climate change. It is therefore important to understand how marine species will respond to such heatwaves, especially as some of the temperatures experienced may become standard conditions towards the end of this century. Writing in Nature Communications in September 2023, Welch et al. used a combination of observational data and modelling to examine the effect of four recent heatwaves on the distributions of marine top predators, including seabirds, mammals, turtles, tunas and sharks. The authors used boosted regression tree models and telemetry data from the North Pacific during the heatwaves of 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2020 to predict responses, which they validated against independent observational data. There was considerable variation both between heatwaves and between species in the extent of habitat loss and range contraction, and the distance and direction of habitat displacement. For example, whereas all coastal species moved northwest in the earlier two heatwaves, some tuna and sharks moved southeast in 2019 and 2020. Similarly, several species saw range contractions in 2014 and 2015 followed by range expansions in the later heatwaves. Many species shifted considerably between national jurisdictions, which has implications for management. Importantly, although the effects were variable, they were predictable and these predictions can be made in real time. We chose to highlight this study for its implications for managing the effects of future heatwaves, which is particularly relevant in light of the unprecedented extreme marine temperatures witnessed during 2023.

Abstract:The intensifying global ocean deoxygenation has significant impacts on the oceanic ecological equilibrium. Gaps persist in understanding the dynamic evolution of global ocean oxygen throughout the 20th century due to the spatiotemporal sparsity of measurements and systematic biases within Earth system models. Here, we propose a novel spatiotemporal embedded artificial intelligence model that integrates diverse ocean datasets to construct a high-precision, monthly-resolved global ocean oxygen dataset spanning the past 140 years. Our quantitative analyses revealed a decline in global ocean oxygen content from 234.5 ± 0.4 Pmol in 1871 to 230.6 ± 0.4 Pmol in 2010, with a sharp drop of −1402.2 ± 173.6 Tmol per decade post-1980, attributing 98.5% of total oxygen loss in the past three decades alone. Our investigation further underscored that the critical temperature at the sea surface beyond which ocean oxygen begins to rapidly decrease is approximately 18°C. Forward-looking projections underlined the potential for a decline exceeding 10% in global ocean oxygen content relative to pre-1900 levels, under uncontrolled anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions by the end of the 21st century. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of historical dynamics and future trajectories in global ocean oxygen, as well as a deeper knowledge of ocean deoxygenation and its underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:In the year 2023, we have seen extraordinary extrema in high sea-surface temperature (SST) in the North Atlantic and in low sea-ice extent in the Southern Ocean, outside the 4-sigma envelope of the 1982-2011 daily timeseries. Earth's net global energy imbalance (12 months up to September 2023) amounts to +1.9 W/m 2 as part of a remarkably large upward trend, ensuring further heating of the ocean. However, the regional radiation budget over the North Atlantic does not show signs of a suggested significant step increase from less negative aerosol forcing since 2020. While the temperature in the top 100 m of the global ocean has been rising in all basins since about 1980, specifically the Atlantic basin has continued to further heat up since 2016, potentially contributing to the extreme SST. Similarly, salinity in the top 100 m of the ocean has increased in recent years specifically in the Atlantic basin, and in addition in about 2015 a substantial negative trend for sea-ice extent in the Southern Ocean began. Analysing climate and Earth System model simulations of the future, we find that the extreme SST in the North Atlantic and the extreme in Southern Ocean sea-ice extent in 2023 lie at the fringe of the expected mean climate change for a global surface-air temperature warming level (GWL) of 1.5°C, and closer to the average at a 3.0°C GWL. Understanding the regional and global drivers of these extremes is indispensable for assessing frequency and impacts of similar events in the coming years.

Abstract:Based on the satellite-derived global daily sea surface temperature (SST) data set with high resolution (0.25 degrees by 0.25 degrees), we analyzed changes in annual mean SST and extreme SSTs over the China Seas since 1982. Results show that the annual mean SST in the China Seas has experienced a remarkable declining trend during the global warming hiatus (1998-2013), which was dominated by the striking cooling of SST in boreal winter. Despite annual mean SST experienced warming hiatus after 1998, the regional averaged SST for 1998-2013 was still 0.5 degrees Cabove that for 1982-1997. The statistical distributions show that there are not only significant warmer climate shift in annual mean SSTs but also in annual extreme hot SSTs and cold SSTs. These changes can increase the likelihood of extreme oceanic warming events, known as marine heat waves (MHWs). Further analyses reveal that, from 1982 to present, the MHW frequency increases at a rate of 1.13 events per decade, 2.5 times the global mean rate. For the period 1998-2013, the MHWs in the China Sea has never decreased in both of the frequency and intensity but has already become more frequent, longer duration and more intense than those metrics of MHWs during 1982-1997.

Abstract:As a result of global warming, major ocean basins have witnessed an increase in the number of extreme warm events and a decrease in the number of extreme cold events, increasing the number of marine heatwave (MHW) events. Previous quantification of MHW events has been limited to simple single metrics, which can only recognize some characteristics from a particular aspect. Here, we propose a new marine Heat Wave Comprehensive Index (HWCI) by fusing multiple metrics to characterize the scalable cumulative intensity of MHWs, which exhibits excellent identification reliability and superiority to effectively monitor the evolutionary patterns of various levels of MHW events. We find that five levels of global MHW events have presented an obvious spatial expansion and temporal enhancement pattern since the early 21st century, with the obvious spatial contraction (32.98 %) of weak events followed by the expansion (19.82 %) of extreme events at the highest growth rate of 0.07, primarily in the mid–low-latitude oceans and the Arctic. The results demonstrate that extreme MHW events dominate global MHW evolution patterns and that the expansion and intensification of such episodes have major implications for the event distribution and level structure. The new indicator is promising for directly measuring and identifying MHWs, and contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of MHWs in the context of global climate change.

Abstract:Recent climate extremes have broken long-standing records by large margins. Such extremes unprecedented in the observational period often have substantial impacts due to a tendency to adapt to the highest intensities, and no higher, experienced during a lifetime. Here, we show models project not only more intense extremes but also events that break previous records by much larger margins. These record-shattering extremes, nearly impossible in the absence of warming, are likely to occur in the coming decades. We demonstrate that their probability of occurrence depends on warming rate, rather than global warming level, and is thus pathway-dependent. In high-emission scenarios, week-long heat extremes that break records by three or more standard deviations are two to seven times more probable in 2021–2050 and three to 21 times more probable in 2051–2080, compared to the last three decades. In 2051–2080, such events are estimated to occur about every 6–37 years somewhere in the northern midlatitudes.

Abstract:The Maritime Continent (MC), a critical region for inter‐basin climate interaction, harbors the world's highest marine biodiversity. Ocean warming in the MC, although with notable impacts on regional climate and marine ecosystems, remains poorly constrained by observations. By applying a volume‐correction algorithm to existing gridded observational data sets, this study provides an estimate for the ocean heat content (OHC) change of the MC. The results suggest a substantial OHC increase of 2.65 ± 0.46 Zettajoules during 1990–2015 (1.08 ± 0.17 W m−2) and limited changes before and after. This increase primarily arose from the enhanced Pacific Walker circulation, which drove a convergence of upper‐layer warm water toward the MC. A potential heat storage "hotspot" with enhanced warming below 500 m emerges within the Sulu Sea, which is supported by analysis of profile data collected in boreal winter but not in other seasons.
