Abstract:
Noninvasive cardiovascular monitoring via pulse sensor is highly desirable for diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. However, long-term and multi-indicators cardiovascular monitoring through pulse sensor is still great challenge in practical application. Here, a self-powered ultrasensitive pulse sensor (SUPS) based on triboelectric nanogenerator is developed for noninvasive multi-indicators cardiovascular monitoring. Owning to the synergistic engineering of materials surface and device structure, the SUPS holds excellent sensing performances including the ultrasensitivity of 10.29 nA/kPa, fast response time of 30 ms, and low detection limit of 5 mg. The SUPS achieves the precise detection of pulse waves from varies arteries, and the detailed characteristic peaks in pulse waveforms can be distinguished clearly. Furthermore, a novel strategy for noninvasive multi-indicators cardiovascular monitoring is proposed through the integration of SUPSs distributed on different arterial pulse sites. Cardiovascular indicators including heart rate, pulse wave velocity, and blood pressure are monitored based on the peak position differences extracted from detected pulse waveforms, and all monitored indicators show highly consistency with the results from commercial medical instruments. The developed SUPS enables the noninvasive, long-term and accurate monitoring of cardiovascular system, which is expected to be applied in diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular diseases in the future.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a self - powered ultrasensitive pulse sensor (Self - Powered Ultrasensitive Pulse Sensor, SUPS) to achieve non - invasive multi - index cardiovascular monitoring. Specifically, the existing cardiovascular monitoring methods have the following problems: 1. **Challenges of long - term monitoring**: Existing cardiovascular monitoring methods, such as photoplethysmography, electrocardiogram (ECG) and cuff - based electronic sphygmomanometers, although they can provide intuitive indicators of the cardiovascular state, these devices are usually costly, power - hungry and have poor portability, making it difficult to achieve continuous and distributed monitoring. 2. **Limitations of simultaneous multi - index monitoring**: Most cardiovascular monitoring strategies based on pulse sensors are unable to obtain multiple indicators simultaneously, which limits the accurate and comprehensive assessment of the cardiovascular system. 3. **Risks of invasive monitoring**: Invasive monitoring methods, such as cardiac catheterization, although they can directly sense the cardiovascular state, there is a risk of tissue infection and are not suitable for long - term monitoring. To overcome these problems, the paper proposes a self - powered ultrasensitive pulse sensor (SUPS) based on triboelectric nanogenerator (Triboelectric Nanogenerator, TENG). This sensor has the following advantages: - **Ultra - high sensitivity**: The sensitivity of SUPS reaches 10.29 nA/kPa, the response time is only 30 milliseconds, and the detection limit is as low as 5 milligrams. - **Non - invasive**: The sensor can be attached to the skin surface to achieve non - invasive monitoring. - **Multi - index monitoring**: By distributing multiple SUPS at different arterial pulse points, multiple cardiovascular indicators such as heart rate, pulse wave velocity and blood pressure can be monitored simultaneously. - **Consistency with commercial medical instruments**: The monitoring results are highly consistent with those of commercial medical instruments and meet medical standards. In conclusion, this paper aims to develop a portable, low - power - consumption pulse sensor that can achieve non - invasive, long - term and multi - index cardiovascular monitoring, so as to improve the diagnosis and prevention ability of cardiovascular diseases.
