Abstract:A new and relatively elementary approach is proposed for solving the problem of fair division of a continuous resource (measurable space, pie, etc.) between several participants, the selection criteria of which are described by charges (signed measures). The setting of the problem with charges is considered for the first time. The problem comes down to analyzing the properties of the trajectories of a specially constructed dynamical system acting in the space of finite measurable partitions. Exponentially fast convergence to a limit solution is proved for both the case of true measures and the case of charges.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the classic fair division problem of allocating $m$ divisible items to $n$ agents with linear valuations over the items. We define novel notions of fair shares from the perspective of individual agents via the cake-cutting process. These shares generalize the notion of proportionality by taking into account the valuations of other agents via constraints capturing envy. We study what fraction (approximation) of these shares are achievable in the worst case, and present tight and non-trivial approximation bounds as a function of $n$ and $m$. In particular, we show a tight approximation bound of $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$ for various notions of such shares. We show this bound via a novel application of dual fitting, which may be of independent interest. We also present a bound of $O(m^{2/3})$ for a strict notion of share, with an almost matching lower bound. We further develop weaker notions of shares whose approximation bounds interpolate smoothly between proportionality and the shares described above. We finally present empirical results showing that our definitions lead to more reasonable shares than the standard fair share notion of proportionality.

Abstract:Cake cutting is a classic model for studying fair division of a heterogeneous, divisible resource among agents with individual preferences. Addressing cake division under a typical requirement that each agent must receive a connected piece of the cake, we develop approximation algorithms for finding envy-free (fair) cake divisions. In particular, this work improves the state-of-the-art additive approximation bound for this fundamental problem. Our results hold for general cake division instances in which the agents' valuations satisfy basic assumptions and are normalized (to have value $1$ for the cake). Furthermore, the developed algorithms execute in polynomial time under the standard Robertson-Webb query model. Prior work has shown that one can efficiently compute a cake division (with connected pieces) in which the additive envy of any agent is at most $1/3$. An efficient algorithm is also known for finding connected cake divisions that are (almost) $1/2$-multiplicatively envy-free. Improving the additive approximation guarantee and maintaining the multiplicative one, we develop a polynomial-time algorithm that computes a connected cake division that is both $\left(\frac{1}{4} +o(1) \right)$-additively envy-free and $\left(\frac{1}{2} - o(1) \right)$-multiplicatively envy-free. Our algorithm is based on the ideas of interval growing and envy-cycle-elimination. In addition, we study cake division instances in which the number of distinct valuations across the agents is parametrically bounded. We show that such cake division instances admit a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme for connected envy-free cake division.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham proposed to determine the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s = 1$ and asked, among other things, whether that number could be as large as $2^{n - o(n)}$. We show that the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s \leq 1$ is smaller than $2^{0.93n}$.

Fair Division with Subjective Divisibility

Abstract:The classic fair division problems assume the resources to be allocated are either divisible or indivisible, or contain a mixture of both, but the agents always have a predetermined and uncontroversial agreement on the (in)divisibility of the resources. In this paper, we propose and study a new model for fair division in which agents have their own subjective divisibility over the goods to be allocated. That is, some agents may find a good to be indivisible and get utilities only if they receive the whole good, while others may consider the same good to be divisible and thus can extract utilities according to the fraction of the good they receive. We investigate fairness properties that can be achieved when agents have subjective divisibility. First, we consider the maximin share (MMS) guarantee and show that the worst-case MMS approximation guarantee is at most $2/3$ for $n \geq 2$ agents and this ratio is tight in the two- and three-agent cases. This is in contrast to the classic fair division settings involving two or three agents. We also give an algorithm that produces a $1/2$-MMS allocation for an arbitrary number of agents. Second, we adapt the notion of envy-freeness for mixed goods (EFM) to our model and show that EFM is incompatible with non-wastefulness, a rather weak economic efficiency notion. On the positive side, we prove that an EFM and non-wasteful allocation always exists for two agents if at most one good is discarded.

Abstract:Fair division considers the allocation of scarce resources among agents in such a way that every agent gets a fair share. It is a fundamental problem in society and has received significant attention and rapid developments from the game theory and artificial intelligence communities in recent years. The majority of the fair division literature can be divided along at least two orthogonal directions: goods versus chores, and divisible versus indivisible resources. In this survey, besides describing the state of the art, we outline a number of interesting open questions and future directions in three mixed fair division settings: (i) indivisible goods and chores, (ii) divisible and indivisible goods (mixed goods), and (iii) indivisible goods with subsidy which can be viewed like a divisible good.

Abstract:We consider the problem of fair division, where a set of indivisible goods should be distributed fairly among a set of agents with combinatorial valuations. To capture fairness, we adopt the notion of shares, where each agent is entitled to a fair share, based on some fairness criterion, and an allocation is considered fair if the value of every agent (weakly) exceeds her fair share. A share-based notion is considered universally feasible if it admits a fair allocation for every profile of monotone valuations. A major question arises: is there a non-trivial share-based notion that is universally feasible? The most well-known share-based notions, namely proportionality and maximin share, are not universally feasible, nor are any constant approximations of them. We propose a novel share notion, where an agent assesses the fairness of a bundle by comparing it to her valuation in a random allocation. In this framework, a bundle is considered $q$-quantile fair, for $q\in[0,1]$, if it is at least as good as a bundle obtained in a uniformly random allocation with probability at least $q$. Our main question is whether there exists a constant value of $q$ for which the $q$-quantile share is universally feasible. Our main result establishes a strong connection between the feasibility of quantile shares and the classical Erdős Matching Conjecture. Specifically, we show that if a version of this conjecture is true, then the $\frac{1}{2e}$-quantile share is universally feasible. Furthermore, we provide unconditional feasibility results for additive, unit-demand and matroid-rank valuations for constant values of $q$. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for other share notions.

The online nature of such fair division problems provides both opportunities and challenges such as the possibility to develop new online mechanisms as well as the difficulty of dealing with an uncertain future.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham found it conceivable that the best $n$-term Egyptian underapproximation of almost every positive number for sufficiently large $n$ gets constructed in a greedy manner, i.e., from the best $(n-1)$-term Egyptian underapproximation. We show that the opposite is true: the set of real numbers with this property has Lebesgue measure zero. [This note solves Problem 206 on Bloom's website "Erdős problems".]

Abstract:In this paper, I summarize our work on online fair division. In particular, I present two models for online fair division: (1) one existing model for fair division in food banks and (2) one new model for fair division of deceased organs to patients. I further discuss simple mechanisms for these models that allocate the resources as they arrive to agents. In practice, agents are often risk-averse having imperfect information. Within this assumption, I report several interesting axiomatic and complexity results for these mechanisms and conclude with future work.

Abstract:We prove an estimate for the number of lattice points lying in certain non-convex Euclidean domains of interest in Diophantine approximation. As an application, we generalise a result of Kruse (1964) concerning the almost sure order of magnitude of sums of reciprocals of fractional parts and solve a conjecture posed by Beresnevich, Haynes, and Velani. The methods are based both on the geometry of numbers and probability theory.

Abstract:We study the classic problem of fairly dividing a set of indivisible items among a set of agents and consider the popular fairness notion of envy-freeness up to one item (EF1). While in reality, the set of agents and items may vary, previous works have studied static settings, where no change can occur in the system. We initiate and develop a formal model to understand fair division under the variable input setting: here, there is an EF1 allocation that gets disrupted because of the loss/deletion of an item, or the arrival of a new agent, resulting in a near-EF1 allocation. The objective is to perform a sequence of transfers of items between agents to regain EF1 fairness by traversing only via near-EF1 allocations. We refer to this as the EF1-Restoration problem. In this work, we present algorithms for the above problem when agents have identical monotone valuations, and items are either all goods or all chores. Both of these algorithms achieve an optimal number of transfers (at most $m/n$, where $m$ and $n$ are the number of items and agents respectively) for identical additive valuations. Next, we consider a valuation class with graphical structure, introduced by Christodoulou et al. (EC'23), where each item is valued by at most two agents, and hence can be seen as an edge between these two agents in a graph. Here, we consider EF1 orientations on (multi)graphs - allocations in which each item is allocated to an agent who values it. While considering EF1 orientations on multi-graphs with additive binary valuations, we present an optimal algorithm for the EF1-Restoration problem. Finally, for monotone binary valuations, we show that the problem of deciding whether EF1-Restoration is possible is PSPACE-complete.

Abstract:We study the problem of fairly allocating $m$ indivisible goods to $n$ agents, where agents may have different preferences over the goods. In the traditional setting, agents' valuations are provided as inputs to the algorithm. In this paper, we study a new comparison-based query model where the algorithm presents two bundles of goods to an agent and the agent responds by telling the algorithm which bundle she prefers. We investigate the query complexity for computing allocations with several fairness notions including proportionality up to one good (PROP1), envy-freeness up to one good (EF1), and maximin share (MMS). Our main result is an algorithm that computes an allocation satisfying both PROP1 and $\frac12$-MMS within $O(\log m)$ queries with a constant number of $n$ agents. For identical and additive valuation, we present an algorithm for computing an EF1 allocation within $O(\log m)$ queries with a constant number of $n$ agents. To complement the positive results, we show that the lower bound of the query complexity for any of the three fairness notions is $\Omega(\log m)$ even with two agents.

A Fair Allocation is Approximately Optimal for Indivisible Chores, or Is It?

Abstract:In this paper, we study the allocation of indivisible chores and consider the problem of finding a fair allocation that is approximately efficient. We shift our attention from the multiplicative approximation to the additive one. Our results are twofold, with (1) bounding how the optimal social cost escalates resulting from fairness requirements and (2) presenting the hardness of approximation for the problems of finding fair allocations with the minimum social cost. To quantify the escalation, we introduce cost of fairness (CoF) $\unicode{x2014}$ an alternative to the price of fairness (PoF) $\unicode{x2014}$ to bound the difference (v.s. ratio for PoF) between the optimal social cost with and without fairness constraints in the worst-case instance. We find that CoF is more informative than PoF for chores in the sense that the PoF is infinity regarding all EQX (equitable up to any item), EQ1 (equitable up to one item) and EF1 (envy-free up to one item), while the CoF is $n$ regarding EQX and 1 regarding EQ1 and EF1, where $n$ is the number of agents. For inapproximability, we present a detailed picture of hardness of approximation. We prove that finding the optimal EQX allocation within an additive approximation factor of $n$ is NP-hard for any $n \geq 2$ where $n$ is the number of agents and the cost functions are normalized to 1. For EQ1 and EF1, the problem is NP-hard when the additive factor is a constant and $n \geq 3$. When $n = 2$, we design additive approximation schemes for EQ1 and EF1.

Abstract:We prove near-optimal upper bounds for the odd moments of the distribution of coprime residues in short intervals, confirming a conjecture of Montgomery and Vaughan. As an application we prove near-optimal upper bounds for the average of the refined singular series in the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures concerning the number of prime $k$-tuples for $k$ odd. The main new ingredient is a near-optimal upper bound for the number of solutions to $\sum_{1\leq i\leq k}\frac{a_i}{q_i}\in \mathbb{Z}$ when $k$ is odd, with $(a_i,q_i)=1$ and restrictions on the size of the numerators and denominators, that is of independent interest.

Abstract:We consider the fair allocation problem of indivisible items. Most previous work focuses on fairness and/or efficiency among agents given agents' preferences. However, besides the agents, the allocator as the resource owner may also be involved in many real-world scenarios, e.g., heritage division. The allocator has the inclination to obtain a fair or efficient allocation based on her own preference over the items and to whom each item is allocated. In this paper, we propose a new model and focus on the following two problems: 1) Is it possible to find an allocation that is fair for both the agents and the allocator? 2) What is the complexity of maximizing the allocator's social welfare while satisfying the agents' fairness? We consider the two fundamental fairness criteria: envy-freeness and proportionality. For the first problem, we study the existence of an allocation that is envy-free up to $c$ goods (EF-$c$) or proportional up to $c$ goods (PROP-$c$) from both the agents' and the allocator's perspectives, in which such an allocation is called doubly EF-$c$ or doubly PROP-$c$ respectively. When the allocator's utility depends exclusively on the items (but not to whom an item is allocated), we prove that a doubly EF-$1$ allocation always exists. For the general setting where the allocator has a preference over the items and to whom each item is allocated, we prove that a doubly EF-$1$ allocation always exists for two agents, a doubly PROP-$2$ allocation always exists for binary valuations, and a doubly PROP-$O(\log n)$ allocation always exists in general. For the second problem, we provide various (in)approximability results in which the gaps between approximation and inapproximation ratios are asymptotically closed under most settings. Most results are based on novel technical tools including the chromatic numbers of the Kneser graphs and linear programming-based analysis.

Abstract:The classic cake-cutting problem provides a model for addressing fair and efficient allocation of a divisible, heterogeneous resource (metaphorically, the cake) among agents with distinct preferences. Focusing on a standard formulation of cake cutting, in which each agent must receive a contiguous piece of the cake, this work establishes algorithmic and hardness results for multiple fairness/efficiency measures. First, we consider the well-studied notion of envy-freeness and develop an efficient algorithm that finds a cake division (with connected pieces) wherein the envy is multiplicatively within a factor of 2+o(1). The same algorithm in fact achieves an approximation ratio of 3+o(1) for the problem of finding cake divisions with as large a Nash social welfare (NSW) as possible. NSW is another standard measure of fairness and this work also establishes a connection between envy-freeness and NSW: approximately envy-free cake divisions (with connected pieces) always have near-optimal Nash social welfare. Furthermore, we develop an approximation algorithm for maximizing the $\rho$-mean welfare--this unifying objective, with different values of $\rho$, interpolates between notions of fairness (NSW) and efficiency (average social welfare). Finally, we complement these algorithmic results by proving that maximizing NSW (and, in general, the $\rho$-mean welfare) is APX-hard in the cake-division context.
