Abstract:By virtue of their open network structures and low densities, metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) are soft materials that exhibit elastic instabilities at low applied stresses. The conventional strategy for improving elastic stability is to increase the connectivity of the underlying MOF network, which necessarily increases material density and reduces porosity. Here we demonstrate an alternative paradigm, whereby elastic stability is enhanced in a MOF with an aperiodic network topology. We use a combination of variable-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements and coarse-grained lattice-dynamical calculations to interrogate the high-pressure behaviour of the topologically aperiodic system TRUMOF-1, which we compare against that of its ordered congener MOF-5. We show that the topology of the former quenches the elastic instability responsible for pressure-induced framework collapse in the latter, much as irregularity in the shapes and sizes of stones acts to prevent cooperative mechanical failure in drystone walls. Our results establish aperiodicity as a counterintuitive design motif in engineering the mechanical properties of framework structures, relevant to MOFs and larger-scale architectures alike.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks are a novel family of chemically diverse materials, which are of interest across engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine-based disciplines. Since the development of the field in its current form more than two decades ago, priority has been placed on the synthesis of new structures. However, more recently, a clear trend has emerged in shifting the emphasis from material design to exploring the chemical and physical properties of those already known. In particular --- while such nanoporous materials were traditionally seen as rigid crystalline structures --- there is growing evidence that large-scale flexibility, the presence of defects and long-range disorder, are not the exception, but rather the norm, in metal-organic frameworks. Here we offer some perspective into how these concepts are perhaps inescapably intertwined, highlight recent advances in our understanding, and discuss how a consideration of the interfaces between them may lead to enhancements of the materials' functionalities.

Abstract:We use in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements to monitor the solvothermal crystallisation mechanism of the aperiodic metal–organic framework TRUMOF-1. Following an initial incubation period, TRUMOF-1 forms as a metastable intermediate that subsequently transforms into an ordered product with triclinic crystal symmetry. We determine the structure of this ordered phase, which we call P1-TRUMOF-1, and show that it is related to TRUMOF-1 through topotactic reorganisation of linker occupancies. Our results imply that the degree and nature of correlated disorder in TRUMOF-1 is not fixed, and might be synthetically tuned as required for data storage and manipulation applications.

Abstract:The ultrahigh porosity and varied functionalities of porous metal–organic frameworks make them excellent candidates for applications that range widely from gas storage and separation to catalysis and sensing. An interesting feature of some frameworks is the ability to open their pores to a specific guest, enabling highly selective separation. A prerequisite for this is bistability of the host structure, which enables the framework to breathe, that is, to switch between two stability minima in response to its environment. Here we describe a porous framework DUT-8(Ni)—which consists of nickel paddle wheel clusters and carboxylate linkers—that adopts a configurationally degenerate family of disordered states in the presence of specific guests. This disorder originates from the nonlinear linkers arranging the clusters in closed loops of different local symmetries that in turn propagate as complex tilings. Solvent exchange stimulates the formation of distinct disordered frameworks, as demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and diffraction techniques. Guest exchange was shown to stimulate repeatable switching transitions between distinct disorder states.

Abstract:Defect engineering has arisen as a promising approach to tune and optimise the adsorptive performance of metal-organic frameworks. However, the balance between enhanced adsorption and structural stability remains an open question. Here both CO2 adsorption capacity and mechanical stability are calculated for the zirconium-based UiO-66, which is subject to systematic variations of defect scenarios. Modulator-dependence, defect concentration and heterogeneity are explored in isolation. Mechanical stability is shown to be compromised at high pressures where uptake is enhanced with an increase in defect concentration. Nonetheless this reduction in stability is minimised for reo type defects and defects with trifluoroacetate substitution. Finally, heterogeneity and auxeticity may also play a role in overcoming the compromise between adsorption and stability.

Abstract:Defect engineering is a powerful tool that can be used to tailor the properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Here, we incorporate defects through ball milling to systematically vary the porosity of the giant pore MOF, MIL-100 (Fe). We show that milling leads to the breaking of metal-linker bonds, generating additional coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, and ultimately causes amorphisation. Pair distribution function analysis shows the hierarchical local structure is partially retained, even in the amorphised material. We find that solvents can be used to stabilise the MIL-100 (Fe) framework against collapse, which leads to a substantial retention of porosity over the non-stabilised material.

Abstract:Crystalline materials are often considered to have rigid periodic lattices, while soft materials are associated with flexibility and nonperiodicity. The continuous evolution of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has erased the boundaries between these two distinct conceptions. Flexibility, disorder, and defects have been found to be abundant in MOF materials with imperfect crystallinity, and their intricate interplay is poorly understood because of the limited strategies for characterizing disordered structures. Here, we apply advanced nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to elucidate the mesoscale structures in a defective MOF with a semicrystalline lattice. We show that engineered defects can tune the degree of lattice flexibility by combining both ordered and disordered compartments. The one-dimensional alignment of correlated defects is the key for the reversible topological transition. The unique matrix is featured with both rigid framework of nanoporosity and flexible linkage of high swellability.

Abstract:The mechanism and products of the structural collapse of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) UiO-66, MIL-140B and MIL-140C upon ball-milling are investigated through solid state 13C NMR and pair distribution function (PDF) studies, finding amorphization to proceed by the breaking of a fraction of metal-ligand bonding in each case. The amorphous products contain inorganic-organic bonding motifs reminiscent of the crystalline phases. Whilst the inorganic Zr6O4(OH)4 clusters of UiO-66 remain intact upon structural collapse, the ZrO backbone of the MIL-140 frameworks undergoes substantial distortion. Density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate defective models of MIL-140B and show, through comparison of calculated and experimental 13C NMR spectra, that amorphization and defects in the materials are linked.

Abstract:Despite numerous studies on chemical and thermal stability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), mechanical stability remains largely undeveloped. To date, no strategy exists to control the mechanical deformation of MOFs under ultrahigh pressure. Here, we show that the mechanically unstable MOF-520 can be retrofitted by precise placement of a rigid 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate (BPDC) linker as a "girder" to afford a mechanically robust framework: MOF-520-BPDC. This retrofitting alters how the structure deforms under ultrahigh pressure and thus leads to a drastic enhancement of its mechanical robustness. While in the parent MOF-520 the pressure transmitting medium molecules diffuse into the pore and expand the structure from the inside upon compression, the girder in the new retrofitted MOF-520-BPDC prevents the framework from expansion by linking two adjacent secondary building units together. As a result, the modified MOF is stable under hydrostatic compression in a diamond-anvil cell up to 5.5 gigapascal. The increased mechanical stability of MOF-520-BPDC prohibits the typical amorphization observed for MOFs in this pressure range. Direct correlation between the orientation of these girders within the framework and its linear strain was estimated, providing new insights for the design of MOFs with optimized mechanical properties.

Abstract:The performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) under mechanical stress is an important consideration in the design, synthesis, and application of MOF materials in both fundamental and industrial settings. We herein demonstrate that the bulk modulus (K = -V dP/dV) of a 4,8-connected Zr-based MOF, NU-901, comprised of Zr6O8 nodes and tetratopic pyrene linkers, increases systematically upon postsynthetic installation of a structural organic linker, 2,6-naphthalenedi-carboxylic acid (NDC), via solvent assisted linker incorporation. We calculated the bulk modulus, a measure of resistance to hydrostatic compression, of these modified NU-901 samples through in situ variable powder X-ray diffraction pressure measurements collected using a synchrotron source. As the amount of NDC incorporation into the NU-901 framework increased, the lattice strength of the framework also increased. This strategy of postsynthetic modification at the molecular level serves as a promising blueprint to tune the bulk mechanical properties of other MOFs by increasing the connnectivity of the secondary building unit. Furthermore, we envision this method may allow for structural reinforcement of other frameworks along one preferential axis or direction dependent on the desired application.

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D-MOFs) represent a category of atomically thin materials that combine the structural tunability of molecular systems with the crystalline structure characteristic of solids. The strong bonding between the organic linkers and transition metal centers is expected to result in delocalized electronic states. However, it remains largely unknown how the band structure in 2D-MOFs emerges through the coupling of electronic states in the building blocks. Here, we demonstrate the on-surface synthesis of a 2D-MOF exhibiting prominent π-conjugation. Through a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we provide direct evidence of band structure formation upon hierarchical self-assembly, going from metal-organic complexes to a conjugated two-dimensional framework. Additionally, we identify the robustly dispersive nature of the emerging hybrid states, irrespective of the metallic support type, highlighting the tunability of the band structure through charge transfer from the substrate. Our findings encourage the exploration of band-structure engineering in 2D-MOFs for potential applications in electronics and photonics.

Abstract:Mercury porosimetry and in situ high pressure single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the wine-rack CUK-1 MOF as a unique crystalline material capable of a fully reversible mechanical pressure-triggered structural contraction. The near-absence of hysteresis upon cycling exhibited by this robust MOF, akin to an ideal molecular spring, is associated with a constant work energy storage capacity of 40 J g-1. Molecular simulations were further deployed to uncover the free-energy landscape behind this unprecedented pressure-responsive phenomenon in the area of compliant hybrid porous materials. This discovery is of utmost importance from the perspective of instant energy storage and delivery.

Abstract:Interpenetration of two or more sublattices is common among many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we study the evolution of one zirconium cluster-based, 3,8-connected MOF from its non-interpenetrated (NU-1200) to interpenetrated (STA-26) isomer. We observe this transient catenation process indirectly using ensemble methods, such as nitrogen porosimetry and X-ray diffraction, and directly, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The approach detailed here will serve as a template for other researchers to monitor the interpenetration of their MOF samples at the bulk and single-particle limits. We investigate the mechanical stability of both lattices experimentally by pressurized in situ X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation as well as computationally with density functional theory calculations. Both lines of study reveal that STA-26 is considerably more mechanically stable than NU-1200. We conclude this study by demonstrating the potential of these MOFs and their mixed phases for the capture of gaseous n-hexane, used as a structural mimic for the chemical warfare agent sulfur mustard gas.

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to defect engineering in Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs), aiming to reduce Zr site valency while preserving high node connectivity. Using a rapid heat treatment (RHT) in humid air, O-vacancies were created in DUT-67 through cluster dehydration. Unlike conventional defect engineering, aimed at creating missing-linker defects, this method breaks intra-cluster Zr-μ3O-Zr bonds, generating coordinatively unsaturated Zr (Zrcus) sites. Pair-distribution functon(PDF) analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the O-vacancies lead to symmetry breaking, irreversible node distortions, and framework amorphization. This treatment converts 50% of metal sites to Zrcus sites, nearly doubling the catalytic activity of DUT-67 in glyoxal conversion to glycolic acid. DFT modeling and in situ PDF analysis highlight the dynamic behavior of Zr clusters under reaction conditions, suggesting a new avenue for defect engineering in Zr-MOFs to enhance catalytic performance.

Abstract:DUT-67 is a Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) that incorporates thiophene dicarboxylic acid linkers. In this study, we observed that DUT-67 underwent a striking structural order-disorder transition upon a dynamic heating process. We established a correlation between thermal responses and structural changes in DUT-67 during heating through both calorimetric analysis and structural characterization at various length scales. It was discovered that the chemical integrity of the DUT-67 linkers remained intact during heating. The morphology of DUT-67 was preserved after structural changes, while 50% of its porosity was retained, increasing the apparent density of the framework. The chemical changes caused by the heating were directly related to desolvation. The atomic pair distribution function analyses revealed that the structural disordering process occurred during heating. This was supported by a notable decrease in correlations between neighboring clusters, indicating a loss of structural order. The structural reordering in DUT-67 was found to involve multiple thermally induced phase transitions and then amorphization. The amorphous form of DUT-67 preserved both the high porosity and the functionality observed in its original crystalline state. This study implies that it is possible to find inherently unstable MOF structures for order-disorder engineering for creating new functionalities.
