Abstract:The eccentricity matrix of a graph is obtained from the distance matrix by keeping the entries that are largest in their row or column, and replacing the remaining entries by zero. This matrix can be interpreted as an opposite to the adjacency matrix, which is on the contrary obtained from the distance matrix by keeping only the entries equal to 1. In the paper, we determine graphs having the second largest eigenvalue of eccentricity matrix less than 1.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify distance regular graphs such that all of its second largest local eigenvalues are at most one. Also we discuss the consequences for the smallest eigenvalue of a distance-regular graph. These extend a result by the first author, who classified the distance-regular graph with smallest eigenvalue $-1-\frac{b_1}{2}$.

Abstract:For a connected graph, the distance spectral radius is the largest eigenvalue of its distance matrix, and the distance energy is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its distance matrix. We establish lower and upper bounds for the distance spectral radius of graphs and bipartite graphs, lower bounds for the distance energy of graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. We also discuss upper bounds for the distance energy.

Abstract:Connected graphs whose second largest eigenvalue λ 2 does not exceed 1 have been investigated in the last four decades. Over the years only few particular classes with this spectral property are completely determined. For example, they include bipartite graphs, line graphs and threshold graphs. In this paper we determine all connected ( K 4 − e ) -free graphs, i.e., the graphs that do not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to the graph obtained by removing an edge from the complete graph of order 4; such graphs are also called diamond-free graphs. Since every triangle-free graph is automatically diamond-free, our results includes all triangle-free graphs with λ 2 ≤ 1 . Moreover, it includes all connected bipartite graphs with the same spectral property, and therefore strengthens the result of Petrović (J. Combin. Theory B, 1991).

Abstract:The eccentricity matrix of a simple connected graph is obtained from the distance matrix by only keeping the largest distances for each row and each column, whereas the remaining entries become zero. This matrix is also called the anti-adjacency matrix, since the adjacency matrix can also be obtained from the distance matrix but this time by keeping only the entries equal to $1$. It is known that, for $\lambda \not\in \{-1,0\}$ and a fixed $i\in \mathbb{N}$, there is only a finite number of graphs with $n$ vertices having $\lambda$ as an eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-i$ on the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. This phenomenon motivates researchers to consider the graphs has a large multiplicity of an eigenvalue in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix, for example, the eigenvalue $-2$ [X. Gao, Z. Stanić, J.F. Wang, Grahps with large multiplicity of $-2$ in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix, Discrete Mathematics, 347 (2024) 114038]. In this paper, we characterize the connected graphs with $n$ vertices having $-1$ as an eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-i$ $(i\leq5)$ in the spectrum of the eccentricity matrix. Our results also become meaningful in the framework of the median eigenvalue problem [B. Mohar, Median eigenvalues and the HOMO-LUMO index of graphs, Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B, 112 (2015) 78-92].

Abstract:The eccentricity matrix of a simple connected graph is obtained from the distance matrix by keeping only the entries that are largest in at least one of their row or column. This matrix can be seen as a counterpart to the standard adjacency matrix, since the latter one is also obtained from the distance matrix but this time by keeping only the entries equal to 1. It is known that, for λ∉{−1,0} and a fixed i∈N , when n passes N there is only a finite number of graphs with n vertices having λ as an eigenvalue of multiplicity n−i in the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. This phenomenon motivates us to consider graphs with large multiplicity of an eigenvalue of the eccentricity matrix. In this context, we determine all connected graphs with n vertices for which −2 has the multiplicity n−i , where i≤5 . Infinite families of graphs with this spectral property are encountered. Results of this paper can be compared to results concerning graphs with large multiplicity of zero in the spectrum of the adjacency matrix; at present the graphs for which this multiplicity is n−i , where i≤4 , are known. Our results also become meaningful in the framework of the median eigenvalue problem since, for sufficiently large n , the median eigenvalue of the obtained graphs is always −2.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify non-geometric distance-regular graphs of diameter at least $3$ with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$. This is progress towards what is hoped to be an eventual complete classification of distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$, analogous to existing classification results available in the case that the smallest eigenvalue is at least $-2$.

Abstract:The anti-adjacency matrix of a graph is constructed from the distance matrix of a graph by keeping each row and each column only the largest distances. This matrix can be interpreted as the opposite of the adjacency matrix, which is instead constructed from the distance matrix of a graph by keeping in each row and each column only the distances equal to 1. The (anti-)adjacency eigenvalues of a graph are those of its (anti-)adjacency matrix. Employing a novel technique introduced by Haemers (2019) [9] , we characterize all connected graphs with exactly one positive anti-adjacency eigenvalue, which is an analog of Smith's classical result that a connected graph has exactly one positive adjacency eigenvalue iff it is a complete multipartite graph. On this basis, we identify the connected graphs with all but at most two anti-adjacency eigenvalues equal to −2 and 0. Moreover, for the anti-adjacency matrix we determine the HL-index of graphs with exactly one positive anti-adjacency eigenvalue, where the HL-index measures how large in absolute value may be the median eigenvalues of a graph. We finally propose some problems for further study.

Abstract:The parameter $q(G)$ of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ is the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues over the family of symmetric matrices described by $G$. We show that all $G$ with $e(\overline{G}) = |E(\overline{G})| \leq \lfloor n/2 \rfloor -1$ have $q(G)=2$. We conjecture that any $G$ with $e(\overline{G}) \leq n-3$ satisfies $q(G) = 2$. We show that this conjecture is true if $\overline{G}$ is bipartite and in other sporadic cases. Furthermore, we characterize $G$ with $\overline{G}$ bipartite and $e(\overline{G}) = n-2$ for which $q(G) > 2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a method to characterize graphs determined by their adjacency spectrum. At first, we give two parameters Π1(G) and Π2(G), which are related to coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of graph G. All connected graphs with Π1(G)∈{1,0,−1,−2,−3} and Π2(G)∈{0,−1,−2,−3} are characterized. Some interesting properties of Π1(G) and Π2(G) are also given. We then find the necessary and sufficient conditions for two classes of graphs to be determined by their adjacency spectrum.
A characterization of extremal non-transmission-regular graphs by the distance (signless Laplacian) spectral radius

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$ and $\partial(G)$ is the spectral radius of the distance matrix $D(G)$ of $G$. The transmission $D_i$ of vertex $i$ is the $i$-th row sum of $D(G)$. Denote by $D_{\max}(G)$ the maximum of transmissions over all vertices of $G$, and $\partial^Q(G)$ is the spectral radius of the distance signless Laplacian matrix $D(G)+\mbox{diag}(D_1,D_2,\ldots,D_n)$. In this paper, we present a sharp lower bound of $2D_{\max}(G)-\partial^Q(G)$ among all $n$-vertex connected graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. Furthermore, we give the minimum values of respective $D_{\max}(G)-\partial(G)$ and $2D_{\max}(G)-\partial^Q(G)$ on trees and characterize the extremal trees.

Abstract:For a connected graph $G$ with order $n$, let $e(G)$ be the number of its distinct eigenvalues and $d$ be the diameter. We denote by $m_G(\mu)$ the eigenvalue multiplicity of $\mu$ in $G$. It is well known that $e(G)\geq d+1$, which shows $m_G(\mu)\leq n-d$ for any real number $\mu$. A graph is called $minimal$ if $e(G)= d+1$. In 2013, Wang (\cite{WD}, Linear Algebra Appl.) characterize all minimal graphs with $m_G(0)=n-d$. In 2023, Du et al. (\cite{Du}, Linear Algebra Appl.) characterize all the trees for which there is a real symmetric matrix with nullity $n-d$ and $n-d-1$. In this paper, by applying the star complement theory, we prove that if $G$ is not a path and $m_G(\mu)= n-d$, then $\mu \in \{0,-1\}$. Furthermore, we completely characterize all minimal graphs with $m_G(-1)=n-d$.

Abstract:A lower bound for the second smallest eigenvalue (SSE) of the unweighted Laplacian for an N-vertex directed rooted graph is obtained by obtaining the supremum of the scrambling constant of the (N - 1)-th power of the corresponding adjacency matrix. This supremum is actually achieved by the "N-layer Complete Graph" (NCG) defined in this paper, which implies that for directed rooted graphs that is unweighted for its directed edges, NCGs have the least connective topology in the sense of scrambling constant.

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with extremal eigenvalues of the adjacency matrices of complete signed graphs. The complete signed graphs with maximal index (i.e. the largest eigenvalue) with n vertices and m ≤ ⌊ n 2 / 4 ⌋ negative edges have been already determined. We address the remaining case by characterizing those with m > ⌊ n 2 / 4 ⌋ negative edges. We also identify the unique signed graph with maximal index among complete signed graphs whose negative edges induce a tree of diameter at least d for any given d. This extends a recent result by Li, Lin, and Meng [Discrete Math. 346 (2023), 113250] who established the same result for d = 2 . Finally, we prove that the smallest minimum eigenvalue of complete signed graphs with n vertices whose negative edges induce a tree is − n 2 − 1 − 1 + O ( 1 n ) .

The Spectral Edge of Constant Degree Erdős-Rényi Graphs

Abstract:We show that for an Erdős-Rényi graph on $N$ vertices with expected degree $d$ satisfying $\log^{-1/9}N\leq d\leq \log^{1/40}N$, the largest eigenvalues can be precisely determined by small neighborhoods around vertices of close to maximal degree. Moreover, under the added condition that $d\geq\log^{-1/15}N$, the corresponding eigenvectors are localized, in that the mass of the eigenvector decays exponentially away from the high degree vertex. This dependence on local neighborhoods implies that the edge eigenvalues converge to a Poisson point process. These theorems extend a result of Alt, Ducatez, and Knowles, who showed the same behavior for $d$ satisfying $(\log\log N)^4\ll d\leq (1-o_{N}(1))\frac{1}{\log 4-1}\log N$. To achieve high accuracy in the constant degree regime, instead of attempting to guess an approximate eigenvector of a local neighborhood, we analyze the true eigenvector of a local neighborhood, and show it must be localized and depend on local geometry.

Abstract:The graphs with all equal negative or positive eigenvalues are special kind in the spectral graph theory. In this article, several iterated line graphs $\mathcal{L}^k(G)$ with all equal negative eigenvalues $-2$ are characterized for $k\ge 1$ and their energy consequences are presented. Also, the spectra and the energy of complement of these graphs are obtained, interestingly they have exactly two positive eigenvalues with different multiplicities. Moreover, we characterize a large class of equienergetic graphs which generalize some of the existing results. There are two different quotient matrices defined for an equitable partition of $H$-join (generalized composition) of regular graphs to find the spectrum (partial) of adjacency matrix, Laplacian matrix and signless Laplacian matrix, it has been proved that these two quotient matrices give the same respective spectrum of graphs.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph on n vertices with diameter d . It is known that if 2≤d≤n−2 , there are at most n−d Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+2,n] . In this paper, we show that if 1≤d≤n−3 , there are at most n−d+1 Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+1,n] .
