Abstract:The global population of individuals 60 years and older is steadily rising, reaching 1 billion in 2019, and is projected to reach 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. 1 The increase in age can lead to problematic expression of frailty, a state of increased vulnerability that develops because of the accumulation of microscopic damage in many physiological systems. 2 In addition, the aging process contributes to physiological changes such as heart muscle thickening, progressive loss of cardiac myocytes, and increased fibrosis and calcification of the valves and blood vessels, making older adults susceptible to developing cardiovascular diseases. 3 This phenomenon manifests with approximately 40% of individuals aged 40 to 59 years and approximately 80% of adults older than 80 years experiencing heart diseases and hypertension. 3
