Abstract:Transition-metal catalysts that can efficiently activate peroxide bonds have been extensively pursued for various applications including environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and sensing. Here, we present pyridine-coordinated Co single atoms embedded in a polyaromatic macrostructure as a highly efficient peroxide-activation catalyst. The efficient catalytic production of reactive radicals through peroxymonosulfate activation was demonstrated by the rapid removal of model aqueous pollutants of environmental and public health concerns such as bisphenol A, without pH limitation and Co2+ leaching. The turnover frequency of the newly synthesized Co single-atom catalyst bound to tetrapyridomacrocyclic ligands was found to be 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than that of benchmark homogeneous (Co2+) and nanoparticulate (Co3O4) catalysts. Experimental results and density functional theory simulation suggest that the abundant π-conjugation in the polyaromatic support and strong metal-support electronic interaction allow the catalysts to effectively adsorb and activate the peroxide precursor. We further loaded the catalysts onto a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane and demonstrated that the model pollutants were oxidatively removed as they simply passed through the filter, suggesting the promise of utilizing this novel catalyst for realistic applications.

Abstract:Aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) has attracted significant attention due to the utilization of environmentally friendly and safe O 2 as an oxidizing agent. However, it is still a great challenge to design metal-free catalysts that activate O 2 effectively at low temperature. In this study, a triazine-based covalent organic polymer (MC-TCOP) was prepared through thermal condensation reaction, and the basic characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed by different characterization methods. The MC-TCOP was applied into the AODS reaction, and the catalytic performance reached to 99.6% under mild reaction conditions (T = 50 °C, t = 150 min, gas flow = 90 mL/min, catalyst dosage = 0.04 g). Theoretical calculation showed O 2 and dibenzothiophene (DBT) were co-adsorbed on the active sites of the catalyst, and the reaction mechanism indicated the O 2 was activated into •O 2 − (by the charge difference between the nitrogen and carbon atoms), then the DBT was oxidized to corresponding sulphone. Moreover, reusability experiment confirmed the catalyst performance was still higher than 95% after 9 times of reusing. The MC-TCOP can be used as a metal-free and eco-friendly catalyst in AODS reaction.

Abstract:Oxidative desulfurization (ODS), as a novel desulfurization technique of fuel oil, possesses high desulfurization efficiency for aromatic sulfide and low cost, making it a promising approach. The key to the technology lies in the rational design of catalysts with high activity and stability. Polyoxometalates, which are environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and abundantly available, face constraints in the development of ODS applications due to their low specific surface area and difficulty in regeneration. Introducing metal oxides into carriers with large specific surface areas to obtain heterogeneous catalysts is an effective solution to this problem. Beta zeolites, with regular three-dimensional channel systems, large specific surface area, and superior thermal/hydrothermal stability, are usually used as carriers. In this work, we developed a strategy to enhance zeolite carrier utilization efficiency by introducing Ta5+ species into the rigid framework of zeolites containing confined MoO3. The Ta species in the zeolite framework and the confined MoO3 produce a synergistic effect, exhibiting extremely high catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidative desulfurization of various organic aromatic sulfur compounds under mild conditions (90 °C and atmospheric pressure) in a deep eutectic solvent, surpassing common heterogeneous catalysts for oxidative desulfurization. Moreover, it can resist the adverse effects of interferents, such as naphthalene and indole. Additionally, the confined nature of Beta zeolite endows it with exceptional stability, demonstrating distinctive recyclability.

Abstract:A series of hybrid catalyst @ZSM-5-MCM-41 was prepared in which H3PMo6W6O40 were supported in the pore of micro/mesoporous materials ZSM-5-MCM-41 and HKUST-1 by one-pot method. Five types of ZSM-5-MCM-41 were prepared and corresponding ODS catalysts @ZSM-5-MCM-41 were synthesized. The prepared catalysts were characterized and the most efficient catalyst was selected by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM. The removal of DBT reached 98.13 % by using @ZSM-5-MCM-41−2 under 60 °C with molecular oxygen as oxidant after 150 min. After desulfurization, the catalyst can be simply recovered and reused 7 times with an unnoticeable decrease in catalytic activity, indicating the successful combination of heteropolyacids and micro/mesoporous materials for desulfurization.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ODS) using titanium silicate catalysts has emerged as an efficient technique for the complete removal of organosulfur compounds from automotive fuels. However, the precise control of highly accessible and stable-framework Ti active sites remains highly challenging. Here we reveal for the first time by using density functional theory calculations that framework hexa-coordinated Ti (TiO6) species of mesoporous titanium silicates are the most active sites for ODS and lead to a lower-energy pathway of ODS. A novel method to achieve highly accessible and homogeneously distributed framework TiO6 active single sites at the mesoporous surface has been developed. Such surface framework TiO6 species exhibit an exceptional ODS performance. A removal of 920 ppm of benzothiophene is achieved at 60°C in 60 min, which is 1.67 times that of the best catalyst reported so far. For bulky molecules such as 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (DMDBT), it takes only 3 min to remove 500 ppm of DMDBT at 60°C with our catalyst, which is five times faster than that with the current best catalyst. Such a catalyst can be easily upscaled and could be used for concrete industrial application in the ODS of bulky organosulfur compounds with minimized energy consumption and high reaction efficiency.

Abstract:This work describes a novel approach for linking metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to polyoxometalates (POMs) for use as effective heterogeneous catalysts in the oxidative desulfurization of fuel oil. A POM-based MOF was synthesized in situ with a carboxyl-functionalized ionic liquid as a bridge to combine the POM and MOF. The resulting [mim(CH2)3COO]3 was characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, SEM and TGA. The results indicated that the heteropolyanion-based ionic liquid [mim(CH2)3COOH]3PW was successfully dispersed within the cages of UiO-66. The catalyst [mim(CH2)3COO]3, which had a high content of the active component and large specific surface area, exhibited remarkable catalytic performance in oxidative desulfurization (100% DBT removal in 60 min). Importantly, a synergistic catalytic mechanism involving W=O and the Lewis acid, in which the Lewis acid promoted the decomposition of H2O2 and the generation of peroxotungstate (W(O2)n), was proposed to explain the high oxidative desulfurization catalytic efficiency of [mim(CH2)3COO]3

Abstract:Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is a promising technique for obtaining clean fuel. Designing and researching zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) with bimetallic catalytic sites are encouraging for its further development. In this study, Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808 was successfully synthesized through anchoring Cu+ in MOF-808. Pyridine infrared spectrum (Py-IR) and NH3 temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) confirmed that Lewis (L) acid sites existed in the synthesized material. Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808 was applied into the ODS reaction, during the reaction process, L acid sites adsorbed sulfide, Cu+ sustainably provided electron to H2O2 to formed into •OH, with the synergistic effect of L acid sites and Cu+, 99.9 % of the dibenzothiophene was oxidated to dibenzothiophene sulfone in 120 min. In addition, the cyclic experiment indicated that the ODS performance of Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808 was maintained at 99.2 % after 12 times recycling. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) spectra indicated the framework structure of the reused catalyst was stable, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) result displayed no metal ions (Zr, Cu) leaching after the ODS reaction, which also proved the catalytic stability of the Cu(Ⅰ)-MOF-808.

Abstract:The combustion of fuel with high sulfur concentrations produces a large number of sulfur oxides (SOx), which have a range of negative effects on human health and life. The preparation of catalysts with excellent performance in the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) process is highly effective for reducing SOx production. In this paper, cross-linked polyvinylimidazole (VE) was successfully created using a simple ontology aggregation method, after which a catalyst of polyvinylimidazolyl heteropolyacid clusters (VE-HPA) was prepared by adding heteropolyacid clusters. Polyvinylimidazolyl-phosphotungstic acid (VE-HPW) showed an outstanding desulfurization performance, and the desulfurization efficiency reached 99.68% in 60 min at 50 °C with H2O2 as an oxidant. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited recyclability nine consecutive times and remained stable, with a removal rate of 98.60%. The reaction mechanism was eventually proposed with the assistance of the free radical capture experiment and GC-MS analysis.

Abstract:Flexible encapsulation of polyoxometalates (POMs) into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is a promising and emerging research area. Herein, a novel non-homogeneous IL(CoMo 6 )-MIL-101-NH 2 catalyst was prepared by a stepwise modification method, in which the unprecedentedly flexible encapsulation of POM-MOF catalyst was achieved through ion exchange of introducing (NH 4 ) 3 H 6 CoMo 6 O 24 into IL(Br)-MIL-101-NH 2 . This approach firmly encases the POM within the pores of MIL-101 through electrostatic interactions. It not only preserved the catalytic activity of POM, but also provided sufficient space for the reaction to occur. The IL(CoMo 6 )-MIL-101-NH 2 catalyst retained a high similar activity to homogeneous catalyst, while possessing characteristics of a multiphase catalyst for easy separation and recovery. It tackles POM's solubility issue and enables its encapsulation in MOFs for heterogeneous catalysis. Furthermore, the unparalleled catalyst was utilized in a biomimetic approach for coupling with deep eutectic solvents to achieve ultra-deep aerobic oxidative desulfurization of diesel.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts are usually constructed by immobilizing active species on appropriate supports. However, the dispersibility is difficult to precisely control. In this work, three representative Mo-based MOFs (Mo-MOFs) were constructed by assembling various organic linkers and MoO 3 , where the Mo atoms are homogeneously dispersed due to the coordination. The results illustrated that the obtained Mo-MOF-PI synthesized with 2-propyl imidazole as the ligands exhibited an extremely fast reaction rate, achieving 99.4% sulfur removal of DBT within only 12 min. Compared to other similar catalysts, Mo-MOF-PI showed much higher catalytic activity with a turnover frequency value of 19.2 h −1 . Moreover, it can be reused at least 20 times without a dramatic reduction in catalytic performance. Thus, the as-prepared Mo-MOF catalysts show great potential in large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:A series of commercial silica-supported polyoxometalate ionic liquids ([Cnmim]3PMo12O40) with different substitutes in the imidazole ring were prepared via a facile ball milling method and employed as catalysts in the oxidative desulfurization of organosulfur compounds. The experimental results demonstrated that the active polyoxometalate center was successfully immobilized with a highly uniform dispersion on the silica. Without any organic solvent as the extractant, sulfur removal with the sample C16PMo/SiO2-BM reached 99.5% in 30 min under the optimal condition, which was ascribed to the high specific surface area and lipophilicity. In addition, the active site was verified by a free radical trapping experiment and an ESR spin capture experiment. In addition, the oxidative product was confirmed by GC-MS analysis.

Electron Delocalization Disentangles Activity-Selectivity Trade-Off of Transition Metal Phosphide Catalysts in Oxidative Desulfurization

Abstract:Breaking the activity-selectivity trade-off has been a long-standing challenge in catalysis. Here, we proposed a nanoheterostructure engineering strategy to overcome the trade-off in metal phosphide catalysts for the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of fuels. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrated that electron delocalization was the key driver to simultaneously achieve high activity and high selectivity for the molybdenum phosphide (MoP)/tungsten phosphide (WP) nanoheterostructure catalyst. The electron delocalization not only promoted the catalytic pathway transition from predominant radicals to singlet oxygens in H2O2 activation but also simultaneously optimized the adsorption of reactants and intermediates on Mo and W sites. The presence of such dual-enhanced active sites ideally compensated for the loss of activity due to the nonradical catalytic pathway, consequently disentangling the activity-selectivity trade-off. The resulting catalyst (MoWP2/C) unprecedentedly achieved 100% removal of thiophenic compounds from real diesel at an initial concentration of 2676 ppm of sulfur with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 105.4 h-1 and a minimal O/S ratio of 4. This work provides fundamental insight into the structure-activity-selectivity relationships of heterogeneous catalysts and may inspire the development of high-performance catalysts for ODS and other catalytic fields.
Atomically Permeated MoP‐WOx Core‐Shell Catalysts for Efficient and Selective Oxidation of Thiophenic Sulfides in Fuels via Direct Electron Transfer Mechanism

Abstract:The strongly coupled core‐shell heterostructure catalyst composed of the crystalline molybdenum phosphide core and the amorphous tungsten oxide shell is developed for efficient and selective oxidation of thiophenic sulfides in fuels. The superior catalytic performance results from the interfacial permeation effect of tungsten atoms and the surface oxidation pathway based on direct electron transfer. Heterogeneous interfaces designed rationally in catalysts can induce geometrical, compositional, and electronic effects that can be applied to modulate catalytically active sites and consequently accelerate reaction kinetics. Here, a core‐shell heterostructure catalyst consisting of crystalline molybdenum phosphide (MoP) cores and amorphous tungsten oxide (WOx) shells on porous carbon nanosheets (PCN) is developed for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of fuels. The strongly coupled core‐shell heterogeneous interface triggers a distinctive atomic permeation effect that induces substantial electron transfer from MoP to WOx and subsequent generation of electron‐rich W sites, consequently optimizing the adsorption of intermediates and substrates. The resulting catalyst (WOx@MoP/PCN) demonstrates a turnover frequency as high as 768.1 h−1 for ODS at 60 °C, exceeding that of almost all the state‐of‐the‐art ODS catalysts by 1–2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, a novel surface oxidation pathway based on direct electron transfer is identified in the WOx@MoP/PCN‐H2O2 system, which bypasses the formation of reactive oxygen species, consequently endowing the system with a moderate redox potential. Thus, WOx@MoP/PCN exhibits unprecedented selectivity, achieving 100% removal of thiophenic sulfides from real diesel with minimal consumption of oxidant.

Abstract:Phosphotungstic acid-loaded zirconium dioxide (2) nanoparticles with excellent oxidative desulfurization performance were prepared and fully characterized. By employing this material as oxidative desulfurization catalyst, removal of DBT from 1000 ppm of simulated oil can be completed within 20 min under the optimal conditions. After 5 recycling cycles, DBT removal rate was not obviously decreased, indicating the good recyclability of the catalyst. In addition, this material also exhibited good desulfurization performance for gasoline. The successful preparation of 2 nanocomposite provides an alternative option for catalytic oxidative desulfurization in the production of clean fuel.

Abstract:N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) is a powerful green nitrogen-containing free radical catalyst, while the leaching of homogeneous NHPI remains a crucial obstacle. Herein, the cobalt-based metal–organic frameworks (Co-based MOFs) were introduced as the supports and co-catalysts to successfully confine the NHPI catalyst. NH 3 -TPD characterization confirmed that the heterogeneous catalyst NHPI@Co-MOF containing carboxyl groups linker exhibits more assertive acidity, facilitating the activation of O 2 to generate active radicals O 2 •− that determined the catalytic activity. Owing to these features, NHPI@Co-MOF-DA with two carboxyl groups as the linker achieved 98 % of DBT conversion at 120 °C. Moreover, the DBT conversion of the used catalyst reached 95 % after being recycled 10 times. The distinctive design strategy provided valuable insights into the selection of suitable organic linkers to enhance the synergistic effect of metal cobalt with NHPI in the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) process, broadening the research horizon of MOF hybrids in the construction of efficient ODS applications.

A novel MOF-808 derived material for oxidative desulfurization: the synergistic effect of hydrophobicity and electron transfer

Abstract:A functionalized modified metal-organic framework material of T-MOF-808 was synthesized through hydrophobic modification with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and chlorotrimethylsilane (TMCS). Then a supported oxidative desulfurization catalyst [C12Py]3(NH4)3Mo7O24/T-MOF-808(s) was prepared by using heteropoly acid ionic liquid as the active component. The prepared samples was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, etc. [C12Py]3(NH4)3Mo7O24/T-MOF-808(s) was used in the oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT). At the same time, the effects of different loadings of active component, oxygen sulfur ratios, reaction temperatures, and reaction time were also investigated. [C12Py]3(NH4)3Mo7O24/T-MOF-808-15%(s) could oxidize 100% of DBT in 40 min at 60 oC. Significantly, the catalyst exhibited no discernible decline in catalytic activity after 14 runs. In addition, the efficiency of sulfur removal was 85.76% in actual diesel oil. It was found that the cooperative impact of hydrophobic modification and electron transfer makes an important contribution to the high activity. The hydrophobic modification provides a novel approach for using MOF materials in the oxidative desulfurization process.
