Abstract:A comprehensive dust‐particle geometry model is highly required for accurate computations of optical parameters in radiative transfer simulations and relevant remote sensing applications. In this study, a superspheroidal model is proposed for simulating polarized radiation at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) under dusty‐sky conditions. The superspheroidal model has one more degree of freedom than the spheroidal model. Sensitivity studies are first conducted to investigate how the additional freedom in the superspheroidal dust model affects the polarized signals at the TOA followed by an examination of the impact of particle size, complex refractive index, and surface properties on these polarized signals. The applicability of the superspheroidal model is then assessed for 11 selected dust events in three main dust source regions (namely, North Africa, Middle East, and the Taklamakan Desert). Specifically, the normalized polarized radiance as observed by the Polarization and Anisotropy of Reflectances for Atmospheric Sciences coupled with Observations from a Lidar (PARASOL) are compared with simulations from an adding‐doubling vector radiative transfer model. It is found that the concave superspheroidal model with large roundness parameters achieves favorable performances in fitting the angular distribution of the PARASOL polarized radiance. The optimal roundness parameter is found to be 2.6–3.0 and is consistent with recent comparison of the simulated scattering matrices and their laboratory measurement counterparts. These findings support the potential applicability of the superspheroidal model for polarized remote sensing applications.

Abstract:Atmosphere is one of the most important noise sources for ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. By increasing optical loading on the detectors, it amplifies their effective noise, while its fluctuations introduce spatial and temporal correlations between detected signals. We present a physically motivated 3D-model of the atmosphere total intensity emission in the millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. We derive a new analytical estimate for the correlation between detectors time-ordered data as a function of the instrument and survey design, as well as several atmospheric parameters such as wind, relative humidity, temperature and turbulence characteristics. Using an original numerical computation, we examine the effect of each physical parameter on the correlations in the time series of a given experiment. We then use a parametric-likelihood approach to validate the modeling and estimate atmosphere parameters from the POLARBEAR-I project first season data set. We derive a new 1.0% upper limit on the linear polarization fraction of atmospheric emission. We also compare our results to previous studies and weather station measurements. The proposed model can be used for realistic simulations of future ground-based CMB observations.
A new model of cosmogenic production of radiocarbon 14C in the atmosphere

Abstract:We present the results of full new calculation of radiocarbon 14C production in the Earth atmosphere, using a numerical Monte-Carlo model. We provide, for the first time, a tabulated 14C yield function for the energy of primary cosmic ray particles ranging from 0.1 to 1000 GeV/nucleon. We have calculated the global production rate of 14C, which is 1.64 and 1.88 atoms/cm2/s for the modern time and for the pre-industrial epoch, respectively. This is close to the values obtained from the carbon cycle reservoir inventory. We argue that earlier models overestimated the global 14C production rate because of outdated spectra of cosmic ray heavier nuclei. The mean contribution of solar energetic particles to the global 14C is calculated as about 0.25% for the modern epoch. Our model provides a new tool to calculate the 14C production in the Earth's atmosphere, which can be applied, e.g., to reconstructions of solar activity in the past.

Abstract:Computations of the transmission functions of cosmic rays penetrating the geomagnetic field are discussed. Results of LET spectra calculations both inside and outside the spacecraft COSMOS-1129 are presented. Comparison of calculations and measured results shows (in interval 10-5 x 10(3) MeV/cm) a difference of less than 30%. The need for further systematic low altitude particle measurements for the purpose of developing dynamic models of particle populations is stressed.
Novel Simulation Framework for Analyzing Cosmic Ray Particle Distributions at a Global Scale

Abstract:Cosmic ray measurements have inspired numerous interesting applications over several decades worldwide. These applications encompass non-invasive cosmic ray muon tomography, which enables the imaging of concealed dense objects or structures, the monitoring of area-averaged soil moisture with cosmic ray neutrons in agriculture and climate studies, real-time monitoring of the dynamical changes of the space and earth weather, etc. The demand for a quantitative characterization of cosmic ray shower particles near the Earth's surface is substantial, as it provides realistic particle spectra and rates for these diverse applications. In this study, we introduce Earth Cosmic Ray Shower (ECRS), a GEANT4-based software designed to simulate cosmic ray particle interactions in the atmosphere. ECRS incorporates the U.S. Standard Atmospheric Model and integrates a time-dependent geomagnetic field based on the Tsyganenko and IGRF models. Additionally, we present two case studies illustrating variations in the location-dependent average particle energy for muons, electrons, neutrons, and gammas at sea level. An outlook of this project is provided toward the conclusion.

Simulation of the Production Rates of Cosmogenic Nuclides on the Moon Based on Geant4

Abstract:A numerical simulation model is built to simulate the production of cosmogenic nuclides based on Geant4 (GEometry ANd Tracking). Some modifications have been made for cross sections in Geant4 using the experimental data or the other proper model and the contributions of all secondary particles caused by cosmic rays are included in our simulation model. Our simulation results suggest a substantial contribution of the secondary charged pions to the production rates of Be-10 and C-14, as high as 21.04% for Be-10 and 21.36% for C-14, respectively. Within one set of self-consistent parameters, the simulation results of the production rates of the cosmogenic nuclides, Mn-53, Cl-36, Ca-41, Al-26, Be-10, and C-14, agree well with the measured data from Apollo 15 drill core. This model provides users a validated approach to study the production of cosmogenic nuclides on the planet surface and in the meteorites.

Abstract:We present a new energy transport code that models the time dependent and non-linear evolution of spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei, their secondaries, and photon target fields. The software can inject an arbitrary chemical composition including heavy elements up to iron nuclei. Energy losses and secondary production due to interactions of cosmic ray nuclei, secondary mesons, leptons, or gamma-rays with a target photon field are available for all relevant processes, e.g., photo-meson production, photo disintegration, synchrotron radiation, Inverse Compton scattering, and more. The resulting x-ray fluxes can be fed back into the simulation chain to correct the initial photon targets, resulting in a non-linear treatment of the energy transport. The modular structure of the code facilitates simple extension of interaction or target field models. We will show how the software can be used to improve predictions of observables in various astrophysical sources such as jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN). Since the software can model the propagation of heavy ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays inside the source it can precisely predict the chemical composition at the source. This will also refine predictions of neutrino emissions - they strongly depend on the chemical composition. This helps in the future to optimize the selection and analyses of data from the IceCube neutrino observatory with the aim to enhance the sensitivity of IceCube and reduce the number of trial factors.

Abstract:A new physics-based compact model, which makes it possible to simulate in a unified way the neutron and proton of cosmic ray induced SEU cross sections, including effects from nuclear reaction products and from direct ionization by low-energy protons, has been proposed and vali-dated. The proposed approach is analytical and based on explicit analytical relationships and approximations with physics-based fitting parameters. GEANT4 or SRIM numerical calculations can be used as an aid to adjust or refine the phenomenological parameters or functions included in the model taking into account real geometrical configurations and chemical compositions of the devices. In particular, explicit energy dependencies of the soft error cross sections for protons and neutrons over a wide range of nucleon energies were obtained and validated. Main application areas of developed model include space physics, accelerator studies high energy physics and nuclear experiments.

Abstract:The recent measurements of the spectral intensities of cosmic-ray nuclei have suggested that the ratio of boron to carbon nuclei, R(E) , comprises two components, R1(E) which carries all of the energy dependence and the other RA , a constant independent of energy per nucleon. This finding supports the earlier theoretical expectations and results of gamma-ray astronomy that one of these components is attributable to spallation in a cocoon like region surrounding the sources and the other in the general interstellar medium before cosmic rays leak away from the Galaxy. A new model-independent way of analyzing cosmic-ray spectra is presented here to shed light on the recent findings: Imposing the single constraint that the source function of B nuclei is minimal we use a cascade of rate equations to map point by point the observed cosmic-ray spectra of p, B, C, O, and Fe onto their source spectra and the two lifetimes of cosmic rays τG in the Galaxy and τS in the cocoons surrounding the sources. The model-independent results show that the appropriate choice τS(E) is responsible for R1(E) and the source spectra are power laws with indices of ∼−2.7 . https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.023028 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Understanding how atmospheric cosmic rays are distributed on Earth is crucial for simulating cosmic ray setups and detectors for rare event detection. The accuracy and reliability of such simulations and experiments depend on obtaining this information. This study focuses on analyzing the impact of key parameters in the PARMA model on the angular distributions of terrestrial cosmic ray nuclei. These parameters include geomagnetic cutoff rigidity, atmospheric depth and solar activity. Moreover, angular distributions of various particles, including protons, electrons, neutrons, and muons, were systematically calculated over relevant rigidities, solar modulations, and altitudes. For this purpose, the latest version of the Excel-based Program for calculating Atmospheric Cosmic-ray Spectrum EXPACS (v.4.13), which relies on updated experimental data, was used. The results of the calculations showed clear trends in the angular distributions of all cosmic ray species as a function of the model parameters. These findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics of cosmic rays in our solar system. Moreover, they can contribute to developing more accurate models for predicting the distribution of cosmic rays on Earth's surface.

Abstract:We present a new simulation engine for fast generation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray data based on parametrizations of common assumptions of UHECR origin and propagation. Implemented are deflections in unstructured turbulent extragalactic fields, energy losses for protons due to photo-pion production and electron-pair production, as well as effects from the expansion of the universe. Additionally, a simple model to estimate propagation effects from iron nuclei is included. Deflections in galactic magnetic fields are included using a matrix approach with precalculated lenses generated from backtracked cosmic rays. The PARSEC program is based on object oriented programming paradigms enabling users to extend the implemented models and is steerable with a graphical user interface.

Benchmarking Geant4 for Simulating Galactic Cosmic Ray Interactions Within Planetary Bodies

Abstract:Galactic cosmic rays undergo complex nuclear interactions with nuclei within planetary bodies that have little to no atmosphere. Radiation transport simulations are a key tool used in understanding the neutron and gamma-ray albedo coming from these interactions and tracing these signals back to geochemical composition of the target. We study the validity of the code Geant4 for simulating such interactions by comparing simulation results to data from the Apollo 17 Lunar Neutron Probe Experiment. Different assumptions regarding the physics are explored to demonstrate how these impact the Geant4 simulation results. In general, all of the Geant4 results over-predict the data, however, certain physics lists perform better than others. In addition, we show that results from the radiation transport code MCNP6 are similar to those obtained using Geant4.

Abstract:Low energy protons (< 300 keV) can enter the field of view of X-ray space telescopes, scatter at small incident angles, and deposit energy on the detector, causing intense background flares at the focal plane or in the most extreme cases, damaging the X-ray detector. A correct modelization of the physics process responsible for the grazing angle scattering processes is mandatory to evaluate the impact of such events on the performance of future X-ray telescopes as the ESA ATHENA mission. For the first time the Remizovich model, in the approximation of no energy losses, is implemented top of the Geant4 release 10.2. Both the new scattering physics and the built-in Coulomb scattering are used to reproduce the latest experimental results on grazing angle proton scattering. At 250 keV multiple scattering delivers large proton angles and it is not consistent with the observation. Among the tested models, the single scattering seems to better reproduce the scattering efficiency at the three energies but energy loss obtained at small scattering angles is significantly lower than the experimental values. In general, the energy losses obtained in the experiment are higher than what obtained by the simulation. The experimental data are not completely representative of the soft proton scattering experienced by current X-ray telescopes because of the lack of measurements at low energies (< 200 keV) and small reflection angles, so we are not able to address any of the tested models as the one that can certainly reproduce the scattering behavior of low energy protons expected for the ATHENA mission. We can, however, discard multiple scattering as the model able to reproduce soft proton funneling, and affirm that Coulomb single scattering can represent, until further measurements, the best approximation of the proton scattered angular distribution at the exit of X-ray optics.

Abstract:The need for quantitative characterization of the solar energetic particle (SEP) dynamics goes beyond being an academic discipline only. It has numerous practical implications related to human activity in space. The terrestrial magnetic field shields the International Space Station (ISS) and most uncrewed missions from exposure to SEP radiation. However, extreme SEP events with hard energy spectra are particularly rich in hundreds of MeV to several GeV protons that can reach the altitudes of the Low Earth Orbit (LEO). These protons have a high penetrating capability, thus producing significant radiation hazards for human spaceflight. SEPs also have a significant effect on the atmosphere. Sudden ionization of the upper atmosphere at high latitudes that occurs during polar cap absorption (PCA) events can block high frequency (HF) communication for hours, affecting communication with aircraft on intercontinental high-altitude flights. Another effect of SEPs in the atmosphere is creating NOx molecules in the upper atmosphere that can deplete the atmospheric ozone population. The paper also presents an analysis of (1) how various pitch angle diffusion coefficient approximations affect the properties of the simulated SEPs population and (2) discusses how pitch angle scattering when SEPs are beyond 1 AU affects a SEP event decay phase at the Earth's orbit.

Abstract:The combined influence of stellar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) on the radiation environment, and hence potential habitability, of Earth-like exoplanets is relatively unknown. The present study, for the first time, comprehensively models the transport of these particles in a physics-first manner, using a unique suite of numerical models applied to the astrosphere of Proxima Centauri. The astrospheric plasma environment is modeled magnetohydrodynamically, while particle transport is modeled using a 3D ab initio GCR modulation code, as opposed to previous 1D approaches to this problem. StEP intensities are also calculated using observed stellar event profiles for Proxima Centauri as inputs. Computed intensities are then used to calculate possible atmospheric ionization effects and dose rates. We demonstrate that the contribution of GCRs to these quantities is indeed significant, contrary to the conclusions of previous studies. Furthermore, we propose a novel potential constraint on exoplanetary habitability, namely the rotational period of the host star, based on the unique 3D modeling approach presented here.

Abstract:We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high- pT charged hadrons, D mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient q̂ . To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. Abstract:Abstract. GOCO06s is the latest satellite-only global gravity field model computed by the GOCO (Gravity Observation Combination) project. It is based on over a billion observations acquired over 15 years from 19 satellites with different complementary observation principles. This combination of different measurement techniques is key in providing consistent high-accuracy and best possible spatial resolution of the Earth's gravity field. The motivation for the new release was in the availability of reprocessed observation data for GRACE and GOCE, updated background models, and substantial improvements in the processing chains of the individual contributions. Due to the long observation period, the model consists not only of a static gravity field, but comprises additionally modeled temporal variations. These are represented by time variable spherical harmonic coefficients, using a deterministic model for a regularized trend and annual oscillation. The main focus within the GOCO combination process is on the proper handling of the stochastic behavior of the input data. Appropriate noise modelling for the used observations result in realistic accuracy information for the derived gravity field solution. Abstract:Abstract Space weather is an important driver of the exposure of aircrew and passengers to cosmic rays at flight altitudes, which has been a matter of concern for several decades. The assessment of the corresponding radiation doses can be realized by measurements or model calculations that cover the whole range of the radiation field in terms of geomagnetic shielding, atmospheric shielding, and the effects of space weather. Since the radiation field at aviation altitudes is very complex in terms of particle composition and energy distribution, the accurate experimental determination of doses at aviation altitudes is still a challenging task. Accordingly, the amount of data with comparatively small uncertainties is scarce. The Community Coordinated Modeling Center invited the Federal Aviation Administration, the German Aerospace Center, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to make their radiation models for aviation CARI‐7A, PANDOCA, and NAIRAS available for interested users via the Community Coordinated Modeling Center web site. A concomitant comparison of model calculations with measuring data provided information on the predicting capabilities and the uncertainties of the current versions of these models under quiet space weather conditions.
