Abstract:Chromium(vi) [Cr(vi)] has been shown to be toxic to organisms due to its mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Therefore, the exploitation of probes with low toxicity and high sensitivity for Cr(vi) detection is needed. In this study, a one-step, solvent-free, and microwave-assisted method was developed for the preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs). The reaction could be finished in just three minutes, and the yield of the dots could reach 58.5%; the as-prepared N-CDs exhibited excellent water solubility, emitted bright cyan fluorescence with a high quantum yield of 38.88%, and possessed excitation- and concentration-dependent characteristics. The N-CDs could be effectively applied to Cr(vi) detection with a linear range of 1-100 μM, and the detection limit could be as low as 0.12 μM. The quenching mechanism was responsible for the inner filter effect, and the quenched fluorescence could be recovered with a linear range of 5-100 μM by the addition of ascorbic acid. We showed that the fluorescent probes could even be employed for the detection of Cr(vi) in river water and for bio-imaging because of their nearly zero cytotoxicity; this showed the potential application of these probes in ion detection and cellular bioimaging. Herein, we have provided an effective strategy to rapidly obtain high-quality N-CDs using a solid-phase microwave method, and the as-prepared N-CDs exhibit various potential applications in environmental and biological fields.

Abstract:Cr(VI) is a toxic heavy metal, which is not readily decomposed and ingested by bacteria. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a sensing method with high selectivity and high sensitivity to detect Cr(VI) in other widely distributed metal ions. Here, a fluorescent probe based on carbon dots (CDs) was developed, with the characteristics of low cost, low environmental impact, high stability, and good water solubility. Although many sensors have been reported for the detection of Cr(VI), most of them are based on the quenching fluorescence method, whereas the one reported here is based on fluorescence enhancement, for which o-phenylenediamine and dl-Thioctic acid were used as raw materials. The transmission electron microscopy, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy measurements showed that Cr(VI) can significantly enhance the fluorescence of the probe compared to previous sensors, as the obtained CDs have excellent fluorescence properties (quantum yield up to 21.82%) and high light stability. The detection limit of the probe for Cr(VI) is as low as 0.64 μM, indicating that the developed probe can detect Cr(VI) quickly, sensitively, and selectively, and has broad application prospects in environmental analysis applications. To facilitate rapid detection of Cr(VI), the CDs were also incorporated into a fluorescent composite film suitable for visual inspection.

Abstract:In this work, a NCO-capped intermediate was first prepared from fluorescent carbon dots (FCDs) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) via an in situ method in the presence of dibutyltin dilaurate as the catalyst. Based on the fact that -NCO groups can react with the hydroxyl and amino groups in chitosan polymeric chains, a novel water-soluble chitosan linked fluorescent carbon dots and isophorone diisocyanate (FCDs-IPDI-CTS) fluorescent material was obtained from the NCO-capped intermediate and chitosan. The prepared FCDs-IPDI-CTS material shows blue fluorescence under UV exposure. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared FCDs-IPDI-CTS material were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared FCDs-IPDI-CTS material exhibits excellent fluorescence properties and good stability. It could be quenched by chromium(VI) and has been further used as a novel fluorescent probe for selective detection of chromium(VI). The optimum conditions for sensing Cr(VI) were investigated. Based on the optimum conditions, a new sensitive method for sensing Cr(VI) was established. This method has been successfully applied to detect Cr(VI) in water and soil samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:A convenient and sensitive dual-signal visualization method is constructed for detection of trivalent chromium ions (Cr3+) based on fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and glutathione-modified gold nanoparticles (GSH-Au NPs). The fluorescence of CDs can be quenched by GSH-Au NPs due to the inner filter effect. Cr3+ induces aggregation of GSH-Au NPs because of the coordination with GSH on the surface of Au NPs, leading to the red shift of surface plasmon resonance absorption of Au NPs that provides a "turn-on" fluorescence and colorimetric assay for Cr3+. The fluorescence/colorimetric dual signal detection shows high sensitivity for Cr3+ with wide detection linear ranges (0.5-70 μM for fluorescence detection and 2-50 μM for colorimetric detection) and low detection limits (0.31 μM for fluorescence detection and 0.30 μM for colorimetric detection). Besides, the method has high selectivity for Cr3+ and can be used for detection of Cr3+ in lake water and tap water samples, showing great potential for visual detection of environmental Cr3+.

Abstract:A water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (FCDs) from cellulose was prepared using one-pot simple hydrothermal method. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe material, fluorescent carbon dots-linked isophorone diisocyanate and β-cyclodextrin (FCDs-IPDI-CD), was prepared with FCDs, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as raw materials. The structure and morphology of FCDs-IPDI-CD were characterized using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The as-prepared FCDs-IPDI-CD exhibits excellent emission property and high stability. The fluorescence of the FCDs-IPDI-CD could be quenched by Cr(VI) ions, and the results indicate that FCDs-IPDI-CD can be used as an effective fluorescent probe for the detection of Cr(VI) ions with good selectivity and sensitivity in an aqueous solution. The influences of environment factors (such as pH, reaction time) on relative fluorescence intensity were studied. According to the optimum conditions, a new sensitive method detecting Cr(VI) ions was established. The method has been successfully applied to detect Cr(VI) ions in water and soil samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Recently, syntheses of various kinds of carbon dots (CDs) and their application as ions sensing probes, as well as the relative mechanism, have attracted great attention of scientists. In this paper, sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (SN-CDs) were synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid and thiourea as precursors with uniform size and excellent fluorescence properties. Importantly, based on the inner filter effect (IFE), the fluorescence of the SN-CDs was quenched by Cr(VI), and thus can be applied as an "on–off" fluorescent sensor with high selectivity and high sensitivity. The detection limit was 0.428 μM, much lower than that from the conventional detection methods. Interestingly, the SN-CDs/Cr(VI) system can also act as an "off–on" fluorescent sensor for detecting ascorbic acid (AA) or sulfide by converting Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and thus weakening the IFE, with the detection limits of 0.686 μM and 0.872 μM, respectively. Consequently, an "on-off-on" fluorescent sensor based on the SN-CDs was established, showing the great potential for detecting Cr(VI), AA and sulfide effectively. Moreover, the proposed sensor has been successfully applied to quantitatively detect in actual samples.

Abstract:<p>In this article, we show that the conventional boron-nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (BNCDs) exhibit unique fluorescent ratiometricity in the detection of Cr (VI) due to their unique dual emission system. The 3D fluorescence spectrum study reveals that besides the commonplace emission centered at (360, 465) nm in blue fluorescence region, another center which may be corresponding to N-contain conjugation domains is found at (490, 535) nm. In the presence of Cr (VI) ions, the emission centered at (360, 465) nm is remarkably quenched due to inner filter effect, whereas the emission centered at (490, 535) nm is almost unchanged. By spectrally simulating inner filter effect using different excitation interferents in the 3D fluorescence spectrum study, accompanied with the fluorescence lifetime and absorption comparison, the sensing mechanism has thoroughly been illustrated. The versatile sensing capability of BNCDs in the different real samples not only provides a new way for the rapid determination of Cr (VI) in practices, but also demonstrates the great potential of the carbon-based materials with multiple emission possess in developing ratiometric sensing platform for rapid and accurate assay of different kinds of analytes.</p>

Abstract:A universal green synthesis approach for Glu-Fe3O4 quantum dots (QDs) with ultrasmall size (similar to 3.3 nm) and enhanced catalysis was demonstrated using glutamic acid (Glu) as a dopant. Abundant carboxylic groups and amino groups on the surfaces with a zeta potential of -6.28 mV resulted in greatly improved environmental stability. The Glu-Fe3O4 QDs exhibited oxidoreductase-like catalytic activity. The steady-state kinetic assays indicated that the QDs had a high binding affinity for the substrate TMB. A facile and sensitive colorimetric platform was developed using the Glu-Fe3O4 QDs for the detection of Cr(vi) in naturally sourced water and waste water, which showed a detection limit of 31.02 nM, much lower than the maximum Cr(vi) level permitted in drinking water by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the industrial water threshold. This universal green synthesis approach and the unique catalytic activity of Fe3O4 QDs open a new horizon in materials chemistry and the development of colorimetric biosensors for environmental protection and public health.

Abstract:In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) are promising fluorescence probes for ions detection. In this paper, the CDs which are with an average diameter of 5.5 nm were synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal carbonization of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) salt. The CDs have strong yellow photoluminescence (PL) with a maximum emission intensity at 550 nm under an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. As the electron transfer will occur between Cr (VI) and the CDs, yellow fluorescence was quenched after adding the Cr (VI) ions. The CDs probe allows the detection of Cr (VI) ions over a concentration range from 0 to 0.1 M ( R 2 = 0.987) and the lower detection limit is 10 −5 M. Simultaneously, the CDs show highly selectivity and stability toward the detection of Cr (VI) ions.

Novel "on-off" fluorescence sensing for rapid and accurate determination of Cr3+ based on g-CNQDs

Abstract:Cr3+ is one of the most essential trace elements in living organisms and plays a vital role in human metabolism. However, both deficiency and excess intake of Cr3+ can be harmful to the human body. Therefore, the quantitative determination of Cr3+ is of great significance in the field of life science. Based on this, in this study, a g-CNQDs@p-acetaminophenol fluorescence sensing system was developed for the quantitative detection of Cr3+ in actual complex samples. G-CNQDs were synthesized with sodium citrate and urea as precursors. The fluorescence signal was enhanced by the synergistic effect between p-acetaminophenol (APAP) and g-CNQDs. The fluorescence quenching phenomenon can be produced when Cr3+ is introduced into the fluorescence-enhanced g-CNQDs@p-acetaminophenol system. An "on-off" fluorescence sensing system was constructed based on g-CNQDs@p-acetaminophenol for the quantitative detection of Cr3+. The experimental data showed a wide linear region in the concentration range of 0.64-63.0 μM, and the detection limit was as low as 0.23 μM. The construction of the sensor system broadens the research field for the practical application of Cr3+.

Abstract:Fluorescence quenching of carbon dots (CDs) has been widely used for ions detection, but it usually exhibits poor selectivity for specific ions, so how to enhance their response selectivity is still an urgent task. In this paper, CDs and carbon nitride (C3N4) nanosheets are prepared by pyrolysis and thermal oxidation method, respectively, followed by their ultrasonic mixing to synthesize CDs/C3N4 composites. They are characterized by transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The synthesized CDs and C3N4 nanosheets both exhibit strong fluorescence response to multiple ions. As a comparison, CDs/C3N4 composites exhibit highly enhanced selectivity to Cr6+ as a result of partial consumption of -NH2 groups and C=N bonds or their reduced binding ability. Meanwhile, our CDs/C3N4 probe exhibits high sensitivity of 54 %, short response time of less than 1 min, low detection limit of 0.39 mu M, wide linear response interval of 2.0 - 80.0 mu M and high stability.
N,Zn-Doped Fluorescent Sensor Based on Carbon Dots for the Subnanomolar Detection of Soluble Cr(VI) Ions

Abstract:The development of a fluorescent sensor has attracted much attention for the detection of various toxic pollutants in the environment. In this work, fluorescent carbon dots (N,Zn-CDs) doped with nitrogen and zinc were synthesized using citric acid monohydrate and 4-pyridinecarboxyaldehyde as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The synthesized N,Zn-CDs served as an "off" fluorescence detector for the rapid and sensitive detection of hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)). The zinc metal integrated into the heteroatomic fluorescent carbon dot played a functional role by creating a coordination site for the hydrogen ions that were displaced after the addition of Cr to the solution matrix. The stepwise addition of Cr(VI) effectively quenched the fluorescence intensity of the N,Zn-CDs, and this phenomenon was attributed to the internal filter effect. A low detection limit of 0.47 nmol/L for Cr(VI) was achieved in the fluorescence experiments. Real water samples were used to evaluate the practical application of N,Zn-CDs for the quantification of Cr(VI). The results show acceptable recoveries and agreement with ion chromatography-ultraviolet spectrometry results. These good recoveries indicate that the fluorescence probe is very well suited for environmental measurements.

A Label-Free Fluorescent Sensor Based on Si,N-Codoped Carbon Quantum Dots with Enhanced Sensitivity for the Determination of Cr(VI)

Abstract:A signal shut-off probe of Si, N-codoped carbon quantum dots (Si, N-CQDs) was exploited to detect Cr(VI) by fluorescence quenching without the aid of any biomolecules or labeling materials. The sensing system prepared the precursor of diacetone acrylamide and the silane coupling agent 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) by a simple hydrothermal method, and the quantum yield is as high as 75% Si, N-CQDs. The fluorescence stability and microstructure of the Si, N-CQDs were studied. The Si, N-CQDs has a high sensitivity for detecting Cr(VI) with the linear range of 0–200 μM and the detection limit of 0.995 μM. The quenching mechanism of Si, N-CQDs is attributed to FRET.

Abstract:This study reports the successful preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with a quantum yield of 15 % utilizing the hydrothermal method. Citric acid was employed as the carbon source, while 1,3-Diamino-2-propanol was utilized as the dopant. It was discovered that the emission of synthesized N-CQDs was dependent on concentration and excitation. By altering the N-CQDs concentration, the fluorescence emission peak was shifted from 453 to 574 nm, causing the emission to transition from blue to orange. The presence of multiple fluorescence emission centers within N-CQDs was confirmed through two-dimensional fluorescence matrix scanning. As the concentration of N-CQDs increased, the distance between these centers decreased, ultimately leading to aggregation. The energy or electrons were transferred as a result of the surface functional groups' interaction, which ultimately causes the fluorescence emission peak to shift to the red. Furthermore, an increase in concentration results in the formation of larger aggregates and larger sp 2 carbon domains, ultimately resulting in longer wavelengths. Because of the convenience of use, high sensitivity, and rapid response of the fluorescent probe detection approach, multi-color N-CQDs with tunable concentration were used for the identification of Fe 3+ , with a 10–200 μM linear detection range and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.56 μM.

Abstract:The nitrogen-sulfur co-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (N/S-CQDs) were synthesized from sulfanilic acid. The fluorescence emission was independent of the excitation wavelength. In this experiment, the carbonization degree of the precursors was adjusted by solvent-thermal method to affect the sp(2) conjugated dimension of CQDs, thus affecting the fluorescence performance of CQDs. They are well dispersed in water and ethanol, and have high selectivity for Fe3+. The detection range is 0.025 similar to 0.4 mmol/L, and the detection limit is about 2.549 mu mol/L. The CQDs prepared in this experiment emit light indirectly through the surface defect state. When CQDs is illuminated by light, the carriers generated by photons will emit light at a very fast speed due to the surface defect state, so the excited electrons in CQDs can be easily transferred to Fe3+, making the surface of CQDs more complete, thus leading to the quenching of CQDs fluorescence.
Solid-Phase Synthesis of Red Fluorescent Carbon Dots for the Dual-Mode Detection of Hexavalent Chromium and Cell Imaging

Abstract:The excellent optical properties and biocompatibility of red fluorescence carbon dots (R-CDs) provide a new approach for the effective analysis of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI) in environmental and biological samples. However, the application of R-CDs is still limited by low yield and unfriendly synthesis route. In this study, we developed a new type of R-CDs based on a simple and green solid-phase preparation strategy. The synthesized R-CDs can emit bright red fluorescence with an emission wavelength of 625 nm and also have an obvious visible light absorption capacity. Furthermore, the absorption and fluorescence signals of the R-CDs aqueous solution are sensitive to Cr(VI), which is reflected in color change and fluorescence quenching. Based on that, a scanometric and fluorescent dual-mode analysis system for the rapid and accurate detection of Cr(VI) was established well within the limit of detection at 80 nM and 9.1 nM, respectively. The proposed methods also possess high specificity and were applied for the detection of Cr(VI) in real water samples. More importantly, the synthesized R-CDs with good biocompatibility were further successfully applied for visualizing intracellular Cr(VI) in Hela cells.

Abstract:As a typical heavy metal pollutant, chromium has caused great harm to the natural environment. Chromium mainly exists in trivalent and hexavalent compounds in nature, among which Cr(VI) is more toxic. As an outstanding fluorescent material, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have the advantages of easy preparation, low cost, good optical stability, good biocompatibility, and low toxicity. The composite carbon quantum dots formed by compounding carbon quantum dots with other functional molecules can not only effectively reduce the preparation cost but also have stable fluorescence emission and metal ion recognition functions. In this paper, L‐arginine modified lignin composite carbon quantum dots (Arg‐L‐CQDs) were synthesized, their fluorescence responsiveness to a series of metal ions was analyzed, and their feasibility for Cr(VI) detection was analyzed. The results show that the Arg‐L‐CQDs can be used as a fluorescent probe to achieve specific fluorescence response, high selectivity, and anti‐interference to Cr(VI). There is a certain linear relationship between the concentration and the fluorescence intensity of the fluorescent probe. The linear equation is F/F0 = 0.5568‐0.0012C[Cr(VI)], the linear correlation coefficient is 0.9945, and the detection limit of the fluorescent probe is 0.8625 μmol/L. Abstract:Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) with a high quantum yield (69%) and excellent photoluminescent properties were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid and cysteine as precursors. The cytotoxicity of N,S-CQDs was evaluated through the MTT assays using HepG2 cells as the target. The cell viability is still >95% after a 24 h incubation with particles in a concentration of up to 300 μg·mL−1, thereby indicating low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility of N,S-CQDs. The emission spectra of the N,S-CQDs are nearly independent of the excitation wavelengths in the range from 280 to 380 nm and have the strongest fluorescence emission centered at 415 nm. Co-doping with N and S promotes the electron-transfer rate and coordination interaction between N,S-CQDs and Fe(III) ions which acts as a quencher of fluorescence. Fluorescence can be recovered, however, by addition of L-Cys. Hence, the N,S-CQDs act as a highly sensitive and selective “turn-off-on” probe for the determination of Fe(III) or Cys. The limits of detection are 14 nM for Fe(III) and 0.54 μM for Cys. The interferences by 17 common metal ions and heavy metal ions, 12 other quenchers and 16 amino acids were investigated and found to be tolerable. The probe was successfully applied for cellular imaging of Fe(III) in HepG2 cells by using fluorescence microscopy.
A Label-Free Nano-Probe for Sequential and Quantitative Determination of Cr(VI) and Ascorbic Acid in Real Samples Based on S and N Dual-Doped Carbon Dots.

Abstract:A fluorescent sulfur and nitrogen dual-doped carbon dots (S, N-CDs) was prepared by a simple and one-step acid-base neutralization and exothermic carbonization method. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) could effectively quench the fluorescence of S, N-CDs based on inner filter effect (IFE) and dynamic quenching, whereas ascorbic acid (AA) could recover the fluorescence of S, N-CDs/Cr(VI) because of IFE weakening. So an "on-off-on" and label-free nano-probe consecutive determination of Cr(VI) and AA was constructed. This nano-probe system demonstrated excellent selectivity and sensitivity to Cr(VI) and AA with linear range of 0.065-198 mu mol/L (3.38-10,296 mu g/L) and 6.6-892 mu mol/L (1.16-157 mg/L), respectively. Meanwhile, the as-prepared S, N-CDs possess low toxicity and could be used for multi-color cell imaging in SMMC 7721 cells. More importantly, this nano-probe was successfully employed for detection of Cr(VI) in tap water and AA in food samples. In view of its simple detection condition, rapid response, wide linear range, low detection limit and inexpensive instrument, the as-constructed nano-probe system could have a wide range of potential application, including water quality monitoring and evaluation, food inspection and testing and biomedical analysis.
