Abstract:Abstract To address the escalating demand for anti-corrosive and anti-fouling solutions in marine environments, the development of superhydrophobic bilayer coating based on nanocomposite polymers applied to metal substrates is crucial. However, achieving concurrent anti-corrosive and anti-fouling functionalities remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a nanocomposite polymer coating was created through the star crosslinking of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and fluorinated polyimide (FPI) prepolymer. Subsequently, a double-layer coating featuring a superhydrophobic layer was fashioned using the aforementioned coating as the base layer. Following a 50-day salt spray test, both the FPI/POSS-4 coating and the double-layer superhydrophobic FPI/POSS@POA/F-SiO2 coating demonstrated exemplary corrosion resistance. The impedance modulus (|Z| 0.01 Hz) of FPI/POSS-4 and FPI/POSS@POA/F-SiO2 was 3.17 × 109 and 7.04 × 1010 Ω⋅cm2, respectively, surpassing that of pure FPI coating by approximately two to three orders of magnitude. The enhanced performance for the FPI/POSS-4 single-layer coating resulted from the POSS star crosslinking, which bolstered coating compactness, thereby creating a physical barrier akin to the “labyrinth effect.” This hindered corrosive media penetration, thereby extending the penetration path. Conversely, the latter double-layer coating relied on the exceptional shielding provided by the underlying nanocomposite polymer coating and the inhibitory effects of the superhydrophobic coating against corrosive media. Notably, the fabricated superhydrophobic coating exhibited robust mechanical durability, retaining its superhydrophobicity even after 100 cycles of sandpaper friction and 80 cycles of tape peeling. In addition, the superhydrophobic coating demonstrated self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties. This study offers a fresh perspective on the preparation of double-layer superhydrophobic coatings with outstanding anti-corrosive and anti-fouling attributes, showcasing their potential and prospective practical applications.

Abstract:Durable superhydrophobic coating has become frequently investigated and reported, however, achieving concurrent mechanical robustness, long-term anti-corrosive and anti-fouling functionalities remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a polymer nanocomposite coating was created through the star crosslinking of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and fluorinated polyimide (FPI) prepolymer. Subsequently, a superhydrophobic bilayer was created by using the aforementioned coating as base coating, hydrophobic polyolefin (POA) with high toughness and strong adhesive was selected to binder fluoride-modified SiO2 nanoparticles (F-SiO2) to construct robust superhydrophobic topcoat and simultaneously enhance the interfacial bonding between topcoat and base coating. Notably, the bilayer superhydrophobic coating exhibited robust mechanical durability, retaining its superhydrophobicity even after 100 cycles of sandpaper friction and 80 cycles of tape peeling. After a 50-day salt spray test, the superhydrophobic FPI/POSS@POA/F-SiO2 bilayer coating demonstrated exemplary corrosion resistance, the low frequency impedance modulus (|Z|0.01Hz) was still as high as 7.04 × 1010 Ω·cm2, which is one order of magnitude higher than that of FPI/POSS-4 coating (3.17 × 109 Ω·cm2) and three orders of magnitude higher than pure FPI coating (1.82 × 107 Ω·cm2). In addition, the superhydrophobic coating also demonstrated self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties. The enhanced comprehensive performance for the superhydrophobic FPI/POSS@POA/F-SiO2 bilayer coating can be ascribed to the improved compactness and physical barrier resulted from the POSS star crosslinking, as well as the strong inhibitory effect endowed by the robust superhydrophobic surface. Abstract:With the rapid development of industries, the issue of pollution on Earth has become increasingly severe. This has led to the deterioration of various surfaces, rendering them ineffective for their intended purposes. Examples of such surfaces include oil rigs, seawater intakes, and more. A variety of functional surface techniques have been created to address these issues, including superwetting surfaces, antifouling coatings, nano-polymer composite materials, etc. They primarily exploit the membrane's surface properties and hydration layer to improve the antifouling property. In recent years, biomimetic superwetting surfaces with non-toxic and environmental characteristics have garnered massive attention, greatly aiding in solving the problem of pollution. In this work, a detailed presentation of antifouling superwetting materials was made, including superhydrophobic surface, superhydrophilic surface, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface, along with the antifouling mechanisms. Then, the applications of the superwetting antifouling materials in antifouling domain were addressed in depth.

Abstract:Marine corrosion and biofouling are the biggest challenges to the security of marine engineering equipment and offshore structures. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), emerging bio-inspired surfaces which have attracted widespread research interest over the past few years, have great potential in corrosion protection and biofouling prevention. It is valuable to summarize the most recent progress as well as to frame further opportunities in this field. In the current review, we have outlined the state-of-the-art fabrication strategies and applications of SLIPSs in anti-corrosion and anti-fouling coatings. Both lubricant-infused structured surfaces and oil-impregnated gels are discussed and compared in the fundamental section, and in the following sections their protection principles and performance in corrosion protection and biofouling prevention are presented separately. Finally, some critical unsolved challenges, as well as the research foci in the future, are proposed in the perspective section.

Abstract:In this paper, we first fabricate a 3D porous FZCF (FAS-modified ZnO-grown copper foam) with robust superhydrophobicity in air and superoleophilicity under water and the repeatable superwettability, and then mainly explore and analyze its corrosion resistance. The superhydrophobic-superoleophilic FZCF as an immiscible oil/organic solvent separation material shows high adsorption capacity and separation efficiency due to its heterogeneous micro-nano structures and low surface energy. It has excellent corrosion resistance under various pH conditions, and can serve as a corrosion protective barrier that prevents metal from contacting corrosive seawater in marine applications. Adsorbed oils also make superoleophilic FZCF keep its durability and stability after suffering attack in strong acid and alkali environments for a long time. Superwetting porous FZCF material that possesses outstanding excellent corrosion resistance demonstrates potential applications in many industrial fields such as oily wastewater treatment and marine oil spill accidents.

Abstract:Superamphiphobic (both superhydrophobic and superoleophobic) surfaces have attracted great interests in the fundamental research and practical application. This research successfully fabricated the superamphiphobic surfaces by combining the nickel plating process and modification with perfluorocaprylic acid. The cooperation of hierarchical micro-nano structures and perfluorocaprylic acid with low surface energy plays an important role in the formation of superamphiphobic surfaces. The contact angles of water/oil have reached up to 160.2±1°/152.4±1°, respectively. Contrast with bare substrate, the electrochemical measurements of superamphiphobic surfaces, not only the EIS measurement, but also potentiodynamic polarization curves, all revealed that, the surface corrosion inhibition was improved significantly. Moreover, superamphiphobic surfaces exhibited superior stability in the solutions with a large pH range, also could maintain excellent performance after storing for a long time in the air. This method is easy, feasible and effective, and could be used to fabricate large-area mutli-functional surface. Such a technique will develop a new approach to fabricate superamphiphobic surfaces on different engineering materials.

Abstract:Antifogging (AF) structure materials found in nature have great potential for enabling novel and emerging products and technologies to facilitate the daily life of human societies, attracting enormous research interests owing to their potential applications in display devices, traffics, agricultural greenhouse, food packaging, solar products, and other fields. The outstanding performance of biological AF surfaces encourages the rapid development and wide application of new AF materials. In fact, AF properties are inextricably associated with their surface superwettability. Generally, the superwettability of AF materials depends on a combination of their surface geometrical structures and surface chemical compositions. To explore their general design principles, recent progresses in the investigation of bioinspired AF materials are summarized herein. Recent developments of the mechanism, fabrication, and applications of bioinspired AF materials with superwettability are also a focus. This includes information on constructing superwetting AF materials based on designing the topographical structure and regulating the surface chemical composition. Finally, the remaining challenges and promising breakthroughs in this field are also briefly discussed.

Novel corrosion-resistant behavior and mechanism of a biomimetic surface with switchable wettability on Mg alloy

Abstract:Enlightened by anti-wetting living creature surfaces in nature, the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) and slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) have been constructed on metal materials for solving engineering problems. In this research, we design a switchable surface between the SHS and SLIPS on Mg alloy to improve corrosion resistance and provide different water-repellent properties. The SHS and SLIPS are fabricated based on a laser-ablated 2O3@Fe2O3 coating (PAFC). After laser processing, the irradiated PAFC consists of micro/nanostructured texture resulting in excellent superhydrophobicity. The SLIPS is fabricated by filling the lubricant into the laser-structured texture of the SHS. Then, the surface can be easily switched between the SHS and SLIPS by alcohol washing and lubricant-infusion. The non-irradiated PAFC acts as a superior and durable corrosion barrier. Notably, the switchable surface exhibits an excellent anti-corrosion ability (with large impedance modulus at 10−2 Hz about 1011 Ω cm2) in both surface states, which does not have any degradation after being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution for 60 days. The SHS and SLIPS have durable air and lubricant layers, respectively, repelling the corrosive species during the immersion test. Simultaneously, the SHS and SLIPS can delay corrosion at an artificial defect area. The SLIPS performs better in the above abilities than the SHS owing to the lubricant layer's stability and self-healing property. The SHS with droplet rolling mode has better droplet transportability, water shielding ability, and self-cleaning ability than those of the SLIPS with droplet sliding mode in dealing with dynamic droplets. Meaningfully, the surface with switchable wettability exhibits long-term corrosion protection and promises a wide range of application prospects of metals such as anti-icing, drag reduction, anti-fouling, etc.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have shown tremendous potential in various fields. However, the adhesion, wetting, and pinning of low-surface-tension liquids greatly limit their multifunctional applications. Therefore, the creation of superamphiphobic coatings that combine superhydrophobic and superoleophobic properties through a simple preparation strategy is desirable. In this study, we successfully developed an organic-inorganic hybrid superamphiphobic coating on Q235 carbon steel using aluminum oxide nanoparticles, organosilanes, and waterborne epoxy resin via a versatile spray-coating technique. The coating exhibited high contact angles (> 151°) and low sliding angles (< 7°) for water and oil liquids, demonstrating excellent superamphiphobic characteristics. Electrochemical tests demonstrated significant improvements in charge transfer resistance and low-frequency modulus for the superamphiphobic coating. The corrosion potential shifted positively by 590 mV, and the corrosion current density decreased by four orders of magnitude. Additionally, the coating endured 480 h of salt spray and 2400 h of outdoor atmospheric exposure, showcasing superior anti-corrosion capacity. Freezing tests of water droplets at –10°C and –15°C confirmed that the coating significantly prolonged the freezing time with reduced ice adhesion strength. We believe that the designed superamphiphobic coating with integrated functionalities of self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, and anti-liquid-adhesion can provide important solutions for extending the lifespan of materials in marine and industrial environments. Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has attracted increasing interest in anti-icing, anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, and surface omniphobicity, in view of its superior stability and performances as compared to the conventional superhydrophobic surface. It is thus of paramount importance to analyze and summarize the most recent progress to boost its further development and applications. This review begins with the bio-inspired design of the SLIPS system with reference to the conventional superhydrophobic counterparts, and outlines a number of fabrication strategies by introducing liquid or solid lubricant into surfaces of different wetting features. The typical applications are summarized and compared towards oil/water separation, anti-icing, anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, and other emerging trends. The future perspectives are discussed based on the state-of-the-art studies at the end.

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) strategy has demonstrated great potential in the field of both biomedical and industrial applications. However, the fabrication of large-area SLIPS with a combined competence of strong bonding to diverse substrates as well as robust oil-locking ability especially those with special shape and structure remains highly challenging. Herein, SLIPS was facilely constructed on various substrates and shapes in bulk via a step-by-step deposition strategy. Collective results demonstrated that the facile and feasible formation of SLIPS coating implemented the combination of multiple excellent properties, including anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, anti-icing, anti-scaling, and readily self-healing. In particular, the spontaneous microphase separation on the surface induced by the prominent polar differences between the superhydrophobic fluorinated segments and hydrophilic hydroxyl and amino groups enabled ultra-stable oil-locking ability, ensuring high robustness under conditions of blood flow, in vivo transplantation, hydrodynamic shear stress even accompanied with boiling and ultrasound, and mechanical wear. Therefore, such desirable properties will endow this SLIPS coating strategy promising practical applications in surgical equipment, medical implants, marine and industrial facilities.

Abstract:In recent years, organic superhydrophobic coatings have emerged as a promising direction for the protection of metal substrates due to their excellent liquid-repelling properties. Nonetheless, these coatings face challenges such as poor mechanical robustness and short service lives, which have limited their development and garnered attention from numerous researchers. Over time, researchers have gained a deeper understanding of superhydrophobic coatings and have published many related articles. Nevertheless, the lack of logical organization and systematic summarization of research focus in this field hinders its advancement. Therefore, the main purpose of this review is to clarify the design principles and working mechanisms of organic superhydrophobic coatings, as well as to summarize and synthesize the latest research on different aspects of superhydrophobic coatings, including liquid-repellent performance, wear resistance, adhesion, antibacterial properties, and self-healing properties. By employing decoupling mechanisms to study each performance aspect separately, this review aims to provide references for extending the service life of organic superhydrophobic coatings.

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) are gaining remarkable amount of interest because of their exceptional liquid and solid repellency properties, their tolerance to high pressures and transparency. The lubricant layer may be depleted, leading to the loss of the “slippery” characteristics of the SLIPSs. Herein, we aimed to increase the lubricant storage capacity to enhance the long-term stability of SLIPSs through the construction of a hierarchical structure on the alloy substrates; the SLIPS herein thus represents a new kind of anti-corrosion material. By comparing the wetting speed of the lubricant and shear resistance properties, we showed that SLIPS with a ZnO/Co3O4/SiO2 hierarchical structure provided the best lubricant wettability among the samples investigated herein; the lubricant was contained in the interior of this sample, thus providing the highest shear-tolerance observed. We also investigated the anti-corrosion property of SLIPSs that comprised ZnO/Co3O4/SiO2. The hierarchical structure had enough space to store the lubricant, which provided excellent corrosion protection for the alloy substrate.

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is a rising star in corrosion protection owing to its outstanding corrosive medium resistance and self-healing property. The large-area and facile fabrication of SLIPS remains a challenge lying on the way of its practical application. Herein, we develop a novel SLIPS based on a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate fabricated by thermally induced phase separation. A sphere-packing structure can be easily obtained by blade-coating followed by cooling. The SLIPS exhibits an extremely low sliding angle of 5.8 degrees so that it can resist the fouling of even the Chinese ink, ascribing to its slippery dynamic surface with low surface energy. We also evaluated the anti-corrosion performance of the SLIPS and superhydrophobic PVDF coating by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning Kelvin probe technique (SKP), both of which exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution due to the physical oil and air barriers against the corrosive medium penetration. Nevertheless, the SLIPS coatings performed outstanding self-healing properties because of the high fluidity of infused oil to recover the surface damages, and the self-healing process was recorded by the SKP.

Abstract:Oily wastewater and oil spill have always been a common concern of environmental problems, and superwetting materials are the key to oil-water separation. However, the superwetting material is constantly blocked by oil, which is a crucial obstacle to its practical application. In this study, we propose a novel strategy to protect the underlying superhydrophilic layer by using a hydrophobic aluminate coupling agent. And we construct the superhydrophilic layer with cellulose and the superoleophobic surface with FS50-modified rough nanoparticles. Porous ceramics can achieve stable superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic properties through a simple soaking step (modified CM). The advanced and receding contact angles on the modified CM surface were 151.74° and 149.11° for crude oil. The modified CM could maintain the contact angle of oil above 150° at various temperatures, pH values, and abrasion. In the continuous separation process, the flux remained above 1.4×10 4 L m -2 h -1 , and the separation efficiency could achieve above 99% for soybean oil. Besides, the modified CM could also separate oil-in-water emulsion. Further, we proposed the coexistence and fabrication mechanism of superhydrophilic/air superoleophobic interface. This study provides new design ideas for developing durable oil-water separation materials.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have been used in various fields from transportation, architecture/building protection, oil/water separation to biomedical device manufacturing, energy conversion and utilization, and textile manufacturing. Here, a comprehensive review of the application of superhydrophobic materials is provided from a fresh perspective, which is helpful in understanding the latest research advances and facilitating future applications in a growing number of fields. Inspired by the lotus leaf in nature, superhydrophobic materials have attracted considerable attention in both science and industry over the past three decades. Apart from the most characteristic yet widely used properties such as waterproofing, anti‐fouling, and self‐cleaning, superhydrophobic materials have also developed exciting new functions such as drag reduction, corrosion resistance, anti‐icing, anti‐bacteria, and anti‐reflection. In this review article, the theoretical models describing superhydrophobic surfaces are first briefly introduced. Then, the most common substrates and strategies for fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces are presented. After that, the application scenarios for superhydrophobic materials in various fields of daily life are systematically presented, from transportation, architecture/building protection, oil/water separation, and seawater desalination to biomedical device fabrication, biosensing, energy conversion and utilization, and textile manufacturing. In particular, the special functional properties are presented and the most representative applications of superhydrophobic materials in the last decade are highlighted. Finally, the potential challenges in translating superhydrophobic materials from the laboratory to practical applications are discussed.

Anti-Corrosion Superhydrophobic Micro-Gf/Micro-Tib2/Nano-Sio2 Based Coating with Braid Strengthening Structure Fabricated by a Single-Step Spray Deposition

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces with self-cleaning, anti-biofouling and corrosion resistance merits are attractive for applications in major engineering fields. Generally, these surfaces possess low-surface-energy chemistry and micro- or nanoscale surface roughness. However, rough surfaces are fragile and highly susceptible to abrasion for high local pressures under mechanical load, causing loss of superhydrophobicity. In this study, we proposed a "fiber weaving/hard particles embedding-soft membrane" strategy to construct a kind of organic-inorganic composite coating by embedding micro-glass fiber (GF)/micro-TiB2/nano-SiO2 particles into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)@polyurethane (PU) for fabricating robust superhydrophobic coating. The addition of micro-nano ceramic particles plays two roles including "hard" micro-skeletons to overcome vulnerable issue of "soft" organic membrane and creation of wear-resistant bearing points on the surface. Furthermore, "soft" membrane can absorb stress when subjected to external mechanical force and PU serves as an adhesive to improve interfacial bond strength. Additionally, GF intersperses in the coating, providing anchoring effect and PDMS serves as a modifier to decrease surface energy. Consequently, the proposed hybrid coating could simultaneously augment its mechanical robustness and multifunctional performance, breaking the notorious "trade-off" restriction of superhydrophobic coating. The preparation parameters and operation condition on the performance of the coating were investigated systematacially. The optimized superhydrophobic coating exhibits the highest water contact angle (WCA) of 167.3 degrees +/- 3.9 degrees, the lowest sliding angle (SA) of 4.6 degrees +/- 1.3 degrees, corrosion protection efficiency of 95.7 % in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, with exceptional self-cleaning, anti-pollution, adaptability to various substrates, thermostable, anti-icing and mechanical stability properties, among the top-tier multifunctional performance. The inherent properties of micro-glass fiber, micro-TiB2 and nano-SiO2 ceramics and their highly ordered arrangement in the superhydrophobic coating are expected to provide an effective and versatile design proposal for potential applications in corrosion protection.
