When $x_0$ is rational, we show that $R_{x_0}$ is multifractal and intermittent by completely determining the spectrum of singularities of $R_{x_0}$ and computing the $L^p$ norms of its Fourier high-pass filters, which are analogues of structure functions. We prove that $R_{x_0}$ has a multifractal behavior also when $x_0$ is irrational. The proofs rely on a careful design of Diophantine sets that depend on $x_0$, which we study by crucially using the Duffin-Schaeffer theorem and the Mass Transference Principle.

Abstract:In this proceedings article we survey the results in [5] and their motivation, as presented at the 50th Journées EDP 2024. With the aim of quantifying turbulent behaviors of vortex filaments, we study the multifractality of a family of generalized Riemann's non-differentiable functions. These functions represent, in a certain limit, the trajectory of regular polygonal vortex filaments that evolve according to the binormal flow, the classical model for vortex filaments dynamics. We explain how we determined their spectrum of singularities through a careful design of Diophantine sets, which we study by using the Duffin-Schaeffer theorem and the Mass Transference Principle.

On new fractal phenomena connected with infinite linear IFS

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:Abstract Elastic turbulence is the chaotic fluid motion resulting from elastic instabilities due to the addition of polymers in small concentrations at very small Reynolds ( $${{{{{{{\rm{Re}}}}}}}}$$ Re ) numbers. Our direct numerical simulations show that elastic turbulence, though a low $${{{{{{{\rm{Re}}}}}}}}$$ Re phenomenon, has more in common with classical, Newtonian turbulence than previously thought. In particular, we find power-law spectra for kinetic energy E ( k ) ~ k −4 and polymeric energy E p ( k ) ~ k −3/2 , independent of the Deborah (De) number. This is further supported by calculation of scale-by-scale energy budget which shows a balance between the viscous term and the polymeric term in the momentum equation. In real space, as expected, the velocity field is smooth, i.e., the velocity difference across a length scale r , δ u ~ r but, crucially, with a non-trivial sub-leading contribution r 3/2 which we extract by using the second difference of velocity. The structure functions of second difference of velocity up to order 6 show clear evidence of intermittency/multifractality. We provide additional evidence in support of this intermittent nature by calculating moments of rate of dissipation of kinetic energy averaged over a ball of radius r , ε r , from which we compute the multifractal spectrum.

A multifractal model for the velocity gradients dynamics in turbulent flows

Abstract:We develop a stochastic model for the velocity gradients dynamics along a Lagrangian trajectory. Comparing with different attempts proposed in the literature, the present model, at the cost of introducing a free parameter known in turbulence phenomenology as the intermittency coefficient, gives a realistic picture of velocity gradient statistics at any Reynolds number. To achieve this level of accuracy, we use as a first modelling step a regularized self-stretching term in the framework of the Recent Fluid Deformation (RFD) approximation that was shown to give a realistic picture of small scales statistics of turbulence only up to moderate Reynolds numbers. As a second step, we constrain the dynamics, in the spirit of Girimaji & Pope (1990), in order to impose a peculiar statistical structure to the dissipation seen by the Lagrangian particle. This probabilistic closure uses as a building block a random field that fulfils the statistical description of the intermittency, i.e. multifractal, phenomenon. To do so, we define and generalize to a statistically stationary framework a proposition made by Schmitt (2003). These considerations lead us to propose a non-linear and non-Markovian closed dynamics for the elements of the velocity gradient tensor. We numerically integrate this dynamics and observe that a stationary regime is indeed reached, in which (i) the gradients variance is proportional to the Reynolds number, (ii) gradients are typically correlated over the (small) Kolmogorov time scale and gradients norms over the (large) integral time scale (iii) the joint probability distribution function of the two non vanishing invariants $Q$ and $R$ reproduces the characteristic teardrop shape, (iv) vorticity gets preferentially aligned with the intermediate eigendirection of the deformation tensor and (v) gradients are strongly non-Gaussian and intermittent.

Abstract:When taking a regular planar polygon of sides and length as the initial datum of the vortex filament equation, , the solution becomes polygonal at times of the form , with , and the corresponding polygon has sides, if is odd, and sides, if is even. Moreover, that polygon is skew (except when or , where the initial shape is recovered), and the angle between two adjacent sides is a constant. In this paper, we give a rigorous proof of the conjecture that states that, at a time , , if is odd, and , if is even. Since the transition of one side of the polygon to the next one is given by a rotation in determined by a generalized Gauss sum, the idea of the proof consists in showing that a certain product of those rotations is a rotation of angle , which is equivalent to proving that some exponential sums with arithmetic content are purely imaginary.

Abstract:We consider a viscous fluid with kinematic viscosity $\nu $ and initial data consisting of a smooth closed vortex filament with circulation $\Gamma $. We show that, for short enough time, the solution consists of a deformed Lamb-Oseen vortex whose center (a filament) follows the binormal flow dynamics plus leading order corrections that depend locally on the filament curvature and the nonlocal interactions with distant parts of the filament. In order to achieve this scale separation we require $\Gamma /\nu $ to be sufficiently small.

Spontaneous stochasticity in the presence of intermittency

Abstract:Spontaneous stochasticity is a modern paradigm for turbulent transport at infinite Reynolds numbers. It suggests that tracer particles advected by rough turbulent flows and subject to additional thermal noise, remain non-deterministic in the limit where the random input, namely the thermal noise, vanishes. Here, we investigate the fate of spontaneous stochasticity in the presence of spatial intermittency, with multifractal scaling of the lognormal type, as usually encountered in turbulence studies. In principle, multifractality enhances the underlying roughness, and should also favor the spontaneous stochasticity. This letter exhibits a case with a less intuitive interplay between spontaneous stochasticity and spatial intermittency. We specifically address Lagrangian transport in unidimensional multifractal random flows, obtained by decorating rough Markovian monofractal Gaussian fields with frozen-in-time Gaussian multiplicative chaos. Combining systematic Monte-Carlo simulations and formal stochastic calculations, we evidence a transition between spontaneously stochastic and deterministic behaviors when increasing the level of intermittency. While its key ingredient in the Gaussian setting, roughness here suprisingly conspires against the spontaneous stochasticity of trajectories.

Reconnection of infinitely thin antiparallel vortices and coherent structures

Abstract:One of the characteristic features of turbulent flows is the emergence of many vortices which interact, deform, and intersect, generating a chaotic movement. The evolution of a pair of vortices, e.g. condensation trails of a plane, can be considered as a basic element of a turbulent flow. This simple example nevertheless demonstrates very rich behavior which still lacks a complete explanation. In particular, after the reconnection of the vortices some coherent structures with the shape of a horseshoe emerge. They have a high level of complexity generated by the interaction of waves running from the reconnection region. These structures also turn to be very reminiscent to the ones obtained from the localized induction approximation applied to a polygonal vortex. It can be considered as an evidence that a pair of vortices creates a corner singularity during the reconnection. In this work we focus on a study of the reconnection phenomena and the emerged structures. In order to do it we present a new model based on the approximation of an infinitely thin vortex, which allows us to focus on the chaotic movement of the vortex center line. The main advantage of the developed model consists in the ability to go beyond the reconnection time and to see the coherent structures. It is also possible to define the reconnection time by analyzing the fluid impulse.

Dissipation, intermittency, and singularities in incompressible turbulent flows

Abstract:We examine the connection between the singularities or quasisingularities in the solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation (INSE) and the local energy transfer and dissipation, in order to explore in detail how the former contributes to the phenomenon of intermittency. We do so by analyzing the velocity fields (a) measured in the experiments on the turbulent von Kármán swirling flow at high Reynolds numbers and (b) obtained from the direct numerical simulations of the INSE at a moderate resolution. To compute the local interscale energy transfer and viscous dissipation in experimental and supporting numerical data, we use the weak solution formulation generalization of the Kármán-Howarth-Monin equation. In the presence of a singularity in the velocity field, this formulation yields a nonzero dissipation (inertial dissipation) in the limit of an infinite resolution. Moreover, at finite resolutions, it provides an expression for local interscale energy transfers down to the scale where the energy is dissipated by viscosity. In the presence of a quasisingularity that is regularized by viscosity, the formulation provides the contribution to the viscous dissipation due to the presence of the quasisingularity. Therefore, our formulation provides a concrete support to the general multifractal description of the intermittency. We present the maps and statistics of the interscale energy transfer and show that the extreme events of this transfer govern the intermittency corrections and are compatible with a refined similarity hypothesis based on this transfer. We characterize the probability distribution functions of these extreme events via generalized Pareto distribution analysis and find that the widths of the tails are compatible with a similarity of the second kind. Finally, we make a connection between the topological and the statistical properties of the extreme events of the interscale energy transfer field and its multifractal properties.
Multifractality in a Nested Velocity Gradient Model for Intermittent Turbulence

Abstract:Small-scale intermittency is an omnipresent feature of turbulent flows, and the velocity gradient tensor in three dimensions provides a rich characterization of its salient statistical and geometric features. A recent model for isotropic turbulence involving a set of stochastic differential equations was derived for the Lagrangian time evolution of the velocity gradient tensor at multiple scales. Dominant terms in the model could be derived directly from the Navier-Stokes equations while also requiring phenomenological models for unclosed pressure and viscous terms. In this work we show that instead of having to integrate this stochastic model in time at multiple levels and scales, the same predictions can be obtained based on a single level that recursively modulates the model terms interpreted at arbitrarily higher levels. The equivalence is explored based on actual realizations of the modeled stochastic process and then extended to probability densities and moments at all levels and scales. Statistical properties compare very well to direct numerical simulation and experimental data at different Reynolds numbers. The proposed formalism represents a new type of multifractal intermittency model that can be connected directly to terms in the Navier-Stokes equation and is capable of predicting many intricate statistical and geometric features of turbulent flows over a wide range of Reynolds numbers.
Cascades and Reconnection in Interacting Vortex Filaments

Abstract:At high Reynolds number, the interaction between two vortex tubes leads to intense velocity gradients, which are at the heart of fluid turbulence. This vorticity amplification comes about through two different instability mechanisms of the initial vortex tubes, assumed anti-parallel and with a mirror plane of symmetry. At moderate Reynolds number, the tubes destabilize via a Crow instability, with the nonlinear development leading to strong flattening of the cores into thin sheets. These sheets then break down into filaments which can repeat the process. At higher Reynolds number, the instability proceeds via the elliptical instability, producing vortex tubes that are perpendicular to the original tube directions. In this work, we demonstrate that these same transition between Crow and Elliptical instability occurs at moderate Reynolds number when we vary the initial angle $\beta$ between two straight vortex tubes. We demonstrate that when the angle between the two tubes is close to $\pi/2$, the interaction between tubes leads to the formation of thin vortex sheets. The subsequent breakdown of these sheets involves a twisting of the paired sheets, followed by the appearance of a localized cloud of small scale vortex structures. At smaller values of the angle $\beta$ between the two tubes, the breakdown mechanism changes to an elliptic cascade-like mechanism. Whereas the interaction of two vortices depends on the initial condition, the rapid formation of fine-scales vortex structures appears to be a robust feature, possibly universal at very high Reynolds numbers.

Abstract:Understanding turbulence rests delicately on the conflict between Kolmogorov's 1941 theory of nonintermittent, space-filling energy dissipation characterized by a unique scaling exponent and the overwhelming evidence to the contrary of intermittency, multiscaling, and multifractality. Strangely, multifractality is not typically envisioned as a local flow property, variations in which might be clues exposing inroads into the fundamental unsolved issues of anomalous dissipation and finite time blowup. We present a simple construction of local multifractality and find that much of the dissipation field remains surprisingly monofractal à la Kolmogorov. Multifractality appears as small islands in this calm sea, its strength growing logarithmically with the local fluctuations in energy dissipation—a seemingly universal feature. These results suggest new ways to understand how singularities could arise and provide a fresh perspective on anomalous dissipation and intermittency. Numerical simulations of a stochastic dynamics leading to cascades and loss of regularity: applications to fluid turbulence and generation of fractional Gaussian fields

Abstract:Motivated by the modeling of the spatial structure of the velocity field of three-dimensional turbulent flows, and the phenomenology of cascade phenomena, a linear dynamics has been recently proposed able to generate high velocity gradients from a smooth-in-space forcing term. It is based on a linear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) stirred by an additive random forcing term which is delta-correlated in time. The underlying proposed deterministic mechanism corresponds to a transport in Fourier space which aims at transferring energy injected at large scales towards small scales. The key role of the random forcing is to realize these transfers in a statistically homogeneous way. Whereas at finite times and positive viscosity the solutions are smooth, a loss of regularity is observed for the statistically stationary state in the inviscid limit. We here present novel simulations, based on finite volume methods in the Fourier domain and a splitting method in time, which are more accurate than the pseudo-spectral simulations. We show that the novel algorithm is able to reproduce accurately the expected local and statistical structure of the predicted solutions. We conduct numerical simulations in one, two and three spatial dimensions, and we display the solutions both in physical and Fourier spaces. We additionally display key statistical quantities such as second-order structure functions and power spectral densities at various viscosities.

Fractal powers in Serrin's swirling vortex solutions

Abstract:We consider a modification of the fluid flow model for a tornado-like swirling vortex developed by J. Serrin, where velocity decreases as the reciprocal of the distance from the vortex axis. Recent studies, based on radar data of selected severe weather events, indicate that the angular momentum in a tornado may not be constant with the radius, and thus suggest a different scaling of the velocity/radial distance dependence. Motivated by this suggestion, we consider Serrin's approach with the assumption that the velocity decreases as the reciprocal of the distance from the vortex axis to the power $b$ with a general $b>0$. This leads to a boundary-value problem for a system of nonlinear differential equations. We analyze this problem for particular cases, both with nonzero and zero viscosity, discuss the question of existence of solutions, and use numerical techniques to describe those solutions that we cannot obtain analytically.

Characterization of Non-Deterministic Chaos in Two-Dimensional Non-Smooth Vector Fields

Abstract:Our context is Filippov systems defined on two-dimensional manifolds having a finite number of tangency points. We prove that topological transitivity is a necessary and sufficient condition for the occurrence of non-deterministic chaos when the Filippov system has non-empty sliding or escaping regions. A fundamental result for continuous flows is the equivalence of topological transitivity and existence of a dense orbit. We prove in our setting that topological transitivity for Filippov systems is indeed equivalent to the existence of a dense Filippov orbit, although, in contrast to the continuous case, we are not able to garantee that the dense orbit implies the existence of a residual set of dense orbits. Finally we prove that, in this context, topological transitivity implies strictly positive topological entropy for the Filippov system. This calculation is made using techniques similar to those from symbolic dynamics.

Abstract:Motivated by the modeling of three-dimensional fluid turbulence, we define and study a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) that are randomly stirred by a spatially smooth and uncorrelated in time forcing term. To reproduce the fractional, and more specifically multifractal, regularity nature of fully developed turbulence, these dynamical evolutions incorporate an homogenous pseudo-differential linear operator of degree 0 that takes care of transferring energy that is injected at large scales in the system, towards smaller scales according to a cascading mechanism. In the simplest situation which concerns the development of fractional regularity in a linear and Gaussian framework, we derive explicit predictions for the statistical behaviors of the solution at finite and infinite time. Doing so, we realize a cascading transfer of energy using linear, although non local, interactions. These evolutions can be seen as a stochastic version of recently proposed systems of forced waves intended to model the regime of weak wave turbulence in stratified and rotational flows. To include multifractal, i.e. intermittent, corrections to this picture, we get some inspiration from the Gaussian multiplicative chaos, which is known to be multifractal, to motivate the introduction of an additional quadratic interaction in these dynamical evolutions. Because the theoretical analysis of the obtained class of nonlinear SPDEs is much more demanding, we perform numerical simulations and observe the non-Gaussian and in particular skewed nature of their solution.

The system of the vortex-like structures: the viewpoint on a turbulence modelling

Abstract:In this study we suggest new approach to turbulence modeling. To develop this approach, we construct the set of the vortex-like dynamical systems evolving in the space $E_3$. These systems are constructed using the AKNS hierarchy so that they generalize thin closed vortex filament described in the local induction approximation. We construct and investigate the Hamiltonian dynamics of these systems in terms of the non - standard variables. We formulate the principles of quantization these systems focusing on the quantum description of the filaments with linearized dynamics. To describe the energy of vortex-like structures, we apply a new method based on the use of the central extended Galilei group. In a special case, we calculate the energy levels of a system of quantized vortices. The proposed approach makes it possible to describe both the interaction of such vortex - like filaments and the processes of their creation and annihilation in a natural way. As a result, we have constructed a quantum turbulent flow model that demonstrates the relationship between stochastic and integrable dynamics.
