Abstract:In the current study, CuO–ZnO coupled oxide thin films were deposited on glass substrates using the spray pyrolysis technique at different substrate temperatures of 250 °C, 300 °C, and 350 °C. The physical properties of the new CuO–ZnO nanocomposite material were investigated using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction analysis, Micro-Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, UV–VIS–NIR spectrophotometry, photoluminescence spectra, and impedance spectroscopy. To incorporate new sensitive materials, the sensor response to ozone (O 3 ) gas was measured at 100 ppb to assess air quality (poor or good) under different biasing voltages and temperatures. The gas sensor exhibited an acceptable response with high response and recovery times. The optimal working conditions were determined to be 260 °C and 0.5 V. The gas-sensing mechanism was also investigated in detail. Additionally, the CuO–ZnO coupled oxide demonstrated higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Methylene Blue. The photocatalytic activity and gas-sensing mechanisms were also investigated in detail.

Abstract:In this current work, CuO–SnO 2 : F mixed oxide thin films were synthesized by spray pyrolysis technique on glass substrates. The structural and optical properties were optimized and improved by varying the substrate temperature from 300 to 350 °C by a step of 25 °C. By increasing the substrate temperature, in addition to the CuO monoclinic phase we notice the appearance of the SnO 2 : F tetragonal phase in the XRD spectrum. Therefore, CuO–SnO 2 : F coupled oxide thin film, where the ratio in the spray solution ( was successfully grown at the elevated temperature equals to 350 °C. This result was confirmed by Raman and FTIR analyses. SEM analysis of CuO–SnO 2 : F films elaborated at a substrate temperature equal to 350 °C endorsed the particle-like spherical shape structure with smooth surface. While EDS and Elemental mapping confirmed the presence of the expected elements. By using the transmission reflection spectra, we estimated the values of the refractive index n, the extinction coefficient k and the dielectric constant. In the visible area the refractive index (n) varies from 1.5 to 2.3 and the extinction coefficient k decreases from 0.8 for Ts = 300 °C, up to about 0.2 for Ts = 350 °C. Moreover, the photoluminescence spectra of the films was investigated and interpreted. The gas-sensing measurements revealed that CuO–SnO 2 : F thin films grown by spray-pyrolysis method at the substrate temperature equals to 350 °C, can detect minuscule traces of O 3 gas (30 ppb) with good sensitivity, fast response and recovery times (60 s and 79 s respectively), at relatively low temperature (200 °C). This manuscript reports the effectiveness of our homemade device as promoter ozone gas sensor in many industrial applications.

Enhanced detection of low concentration volatile organic compounds using advanced doped zinc oxide sensors

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide nanoparticles, as well as those doped with 3% calcium, aluminum, and gallium, were synthesized using a sol-gel method and then deposited onto an alumina substrate for sensing tests. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) measurements, to examine their structural, morphological, and optical properties. The prepared nanoparticles were found to have the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO with a P63mC space group. The UV-Vis-IR spectra showed that the samples are highly absorbent in the UV range, while the PL spectra confirmed the presence of many defects in the ZnO structure, such as oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials. The doped samples exhibited more defects than the pure sample. SEM images of the deposited film surface showed agglomerates with a spherical shape and confirmed the nanometer scale size of our prepared samples, as corroborated by the TEM images. The EDX spectra indicated the high purity of the ZnO deposited films, with a high presence of Zn and O and the presence of the doped elements (Ca, Al, and Ga) in each doped sample. Sensing tests were performed on ZnO, Ca3%-doped ZnO (C3ZO), Al3%-doped ZnO (A3ZO), and Ga3%-doped ZnO (G3ZO) sensors in the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) gases such as ethanol, formaldehyde, methanol, and acetone at low concentrations. The sensors exhibited high responses to low ppm level concentrations of the VOCs gases. At a low operational temperature of 250 °C, the C3ZO sensor had the highest response to 5 ppm of ethanol, methanol, and formaldehyde gases compared to the pure and other doped sensors. Additionally, the A3ZO sensor exhibited the highest response to acetone gas. In conclusion, our findings suggest that the doping of zinc oxide can enhance the low concentration detection of VOCs gases, with the C3ZO and A3ZO sensors showing the highest response to specific gases.
Room-Temperature Ozone Sensing Capability of IGZO-Decorated Amorphous Ga2O3 Films

Abstract:In present work, we report a room-temperature ozone sensor using InGaZnO (IGZO)-decorated amorphous Ga2O3 (a-Ga2O3) thin films. The gas sensing tests demonstrate that the topmost IGZO modification can significantly promote the sensors' responsivity. Intriguingly, the sensing capability presents a first increasing and then decreasing tendency as the surface morphology of IGZO develops from dispersed particles to a continuous film. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation results prove that IGZO nanoparticles can remarkably increase the surface density of photogenerated electrons, clearly manifesting a strong dependence on IGZO particle size and contributing to the boosted responsiveness. However, once IGZO particles coalesce into a thin film, the ozone sensor's responsivity starts to decrease even though the number of photogenerated carriers still increases. The smaller specific surface area of IGZO thin film is believed to be responsible for this phenomenon. The proposed ozone gas sensors own the merits of low cost, room-temperature detection, easy integration, and mass production, significantly expanding the application fields of a-Ga2O3 thin film.
Design of high-sensitivity La-doped ZnO sensors for CO2 gas detection at room temperature

Abstract:For the sake of people's health and the safety of the environment, more efforts should be directed towards the fabrication of gas sensors that can operate effectively at room temperature (RT). In this context, increased attention has been paid to developing gas sensors based on rare-earth (RE)-doped transparent conducting oxides (TCO). In this report, lanthanum-doped zinc oxide (La-doped ZnO) films were fabricated by sol-gel and spin-coating techniques. XRD analysis revealed the hexagonal structure of the ZnO films, with preferred growth along the (002) direction. The crystallite size was decreased from 33.21 to 26.41 nm with increasing La content to 4.0 at.%. The UV-vis-NIR indicating that the films are highly transparent (˃ 80%), La-doping increased the UV blocking ability of the films and narrowed the optical band gap (Eg) from 3.275 to 3.125 eV. Additionally, La-doping has influenced the refractive index of the samples. Gas sensing measurements were performed at ambient temperature (30 °C) and a relative humidity (RH) of 30%, employing different flow rates of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas used synthetically with air. Among the evaluated sensors, the ZnO: 4.0 at.% La sensor exhibited the most significant gas response, with a value of 114.22%. This response was observed when the sensor was subjected to a flow rate of 200 SCCM of CO2 gas. Additionally, the sensor revealed a response time of 24.4 s and a recovery time of 44 s. The exceptional performance exhibited by the sensor makes it very appropriate for a wide range of industrial applications. Additionally, we assessed the effect of humidity, selectivity, reusability, repeatability, detection limit, and limit of quantification.

Abstract:ZnO thin films with a thickness of 300 nm were deposited on Si and Al2O3 substrates using an electron beam evaporation technique with the aim of testing them as low cost and low power consumption gas sensors for ozone (O3). Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the film surface morphology and quantify the roughness and grain size, recognized as the primary parameters influencing the gas sensitivity due to their direct impact on the effective sensing area. The crystalline structure and elemental composition were studied through Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Gas tests were conducted at room temperature and zero-bias voltage to assess the sensitivity and response as a function of time of the films to O3 pollutant. The results indicate that the films deposited on Al2O3 exhibit promising characteristics, such as high sensitivity and a very short response time (<2 s) to the gas concentration. Additionally, it was observed that the films display pronounced degradation effects after a significant exposure to O3.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated a high-performance ozone gas sensor based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived In2O3 hollow microtubes decorated with ZnO nanoparticles. The microstructural and morphological features of as-synthesized In2O3/ZnO samples were characterized by various characterization methods, such as XRD, TG, SEM, TEM and XPS. The sensing properties of In2O3 hollow microtubes before and after modified by ZnO nanoparticles were investigated. The In2O3/ZnO composite shows an obvious enhancement in ozone gas sensing performance at the optimum working temperature of 150 °C. The In2O3/ZnO composite sensor shows much higher response (Rg/Ra = 26.12 @ 1 ppm ozone) in contrast with pure In2O3 (Rg/Ra = 14.08 @ 1 ppm ozone). In particular, the detection limit of the In2O3/ZnO sensor is as low as 25 ppb. The enhanced sensing performance of the In2O3/ZnO composite could be explained by the Zn2+ doping and heterojunction created at the In2O3/ZnO interface.

Abstract:Detection of greenhouse gases is essential because harmful gases in the air diffuse rapidly over large areas in a short period of time, causing air pollution that will induce climate change with catastrophic consequences over time. Among the materials with favorable morphologies for gas detection (nanofibers, nanorods, nanosheets), large specific surfaces, high sensitivity and low production costs, we chose nanostructured porous films of In2O3 obtained by the sol-gel method, deposited on alumina transducers, with gold (Au) interdigitated electrodes (IDE) and platinum (Pt) heating circuits. Sensitive films contained 10 deposited layers, involving intermediate and final thermal treatments to stabilize the sensitive film. The fabricated sensor was characterized using AFM, SEM, EDX and XRD. The film morphology is complex, containing fibrillar formations and some quasi-spherical conglomerates. The deposited sensitive films are rough, thus favoring gas adsorption. Ozone sensing tests were performed at different temperatures. The highest response of the ozone sensor was recorded at room temperature, considered to be the working temperature for this specific sensor.
An easy method of preparing ozone gas sensors based on ZnO nanorods

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanorod-like structures were successfully grown via a hydrothermal method to be used as an ozone gas sensor. X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis revealed a preferential growth of the nanorod-like structures along the [002] direction. Electrical resistance measurements indicated a good sensitivity to different ozone concentrations (0.06–1.19 ppm) as well as long-term stability over a 6 month period at 250 °C. In addition, it was observed that the nanorods had a good sensitivity to ozone at room temperature when the sensor was exposed to UV illumination. This study provides an easy and efficient way to obtain 1-D ZnO nanorods exhibiting remarkable properties for applications as ozone gas sensing materials.

Abstract:Gas sensors based on the multi-sensor platform MSP 632, with thin nanocomposite films based on tin dioxide with a low content of zinc oxide (0.5–5 mol.%), were synthesized using a solid-phase low-temperature pyrolysis technique. The resulting gas-sensitive ZnO-SnO2 films were comprehensively studied by atomic force microscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The obtained films are up to 200 nm thick and consist of ZnO-SnO2 nanocomposites, with ZnO and SnO2 crystallite sizes of 4–30 nm. Measurements of ZnO-SnO2 films containing 0.5 mol.% ZnO showed the existence of large values of surface potential, up to 1800 mV, leading to the formation of a strong surface electric field with a strength of up to 2 × 107 V/cm. The presence of a strong surface electric field leads to the best gas-sensitive properties: the sensor’s responsivity is between two and nine times higher than that of sensors based on ZnO-SnO2 films of other compositions. A study of characteristics sensitive to NO2 (0.1–50 ppm) showed that gas sensors based on the ZnO-SnO2 film demonstrated a high sensitivity to NO2 with a concentration of 0.1 ppm at an operating temperature of 200 °C.

Abstract:Al: ZnO films are prepared by spraying from the pure ZnO and Al with doping at different weight ratios 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.09. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy are used to analyze the structural properties of the films. The results of X-ray diffraction prove that polycrystalline Al:ZnO with a hexagonal wurtzite structure is preferentially oriented on the c-axis, and this is further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. In addition, 0.09 wt% of Al-doping shows high orientation and homogeneity with the (002) plane, which leads to an increase in the surface roughness properties of the thin films as the root main square by 57.4%. The annealing process at high temperatures increases the conductivity of the Al:ZnO films. The rate of electronic mobility increases slightly with low doping and decreases with increasing doping until it reaches its lowest value (0.1 cm 2 (V.s) −1 ) at a doping ratio of 0.035 wt%. The samples show considerable response for CO at 80 ppm gas concentration with gas responses of 85% and 40% at 90 °C for 0.03 wt% Al:ZnO and ZnO films, respectively. The overall study observed that fabricated sensor Al 3+ -doped ZnO is reliable and very rapid in detecting carbon monoxide vapors at moderately high temperatures and low gas concentrations.

Abstract:Zinc hydroxyfluoride (ZnOHF) is a newly found resistive semiconductor used as a gas-sensing material with excellent selectivity to NO2 because of its unique energy band structure. In this paper, Al3+ doping and UV radiation were used to further improve the gas-sensing performance of ZnOHF. The optimized 0.5 at.% Al-ZnOHF sample exhibits improved sensitivity to 10 ppm NO2 at a lower temperature (100 °C) under UV assistance, as well as a short response/recovery time (35 s/96 s). The gas-sensing mechanism demonstrates that Al3+ doping increases electron concentration and promotes electron transfer of the nanorods by reducing the bandgap of ZnOHF, and the photogenerated electrons and holes with high activity under UV irradiation provide new reaction routes in the gas adsorption and desorption process, effectively promoting the gas-sensing process. The synergistic effect of Al3+ and UV radiation contribute to the enhanced performance of Al-ZnOHF.

Abstract:Ground-level ozone (O 3 ) is a primary air pollutant with potential adverse impacts on human health and ecosystems. Aiming to detect O 3 concentration and develop efficient O 3 sensing materials, sensing behavior of heterogenous cation (Fe 3+ , Sn 4+ and Sb 5+ ) doped In 2 O 3 nanostructures was investigated. The incorporation of these cations modulated the electronic structure of semiconductor oxides, affecting the density of chemisorbed oxygen species and reactive sites. From O 3 sensing results, Fe 3+ doped In 2 O 3 based sensors featuring saturated resistance curves in O 3 gas, demonstrated fast sensing speed and qualified detection threshold (20 ppb). In contrast, Sn 4+ and Sb 5+ doped counterparts exhibited non-saturated sensing curves, resulting in slower response/recovery speed. As a proof-of-concept, these optimized sensors were integrated as the sensor array. Coupled to the image recognition technique, this sensor array could successfully discriminate O 3 and NO x . That is, through the tailored combination of material modulation and sensor array, this study paves a novel approach for highly sensitive and selective O 3 detection.

Abstract:Ga-doped ZnO (GZO) nanostructures deposited via low-cost spray pyrolysis process are employed in this study to identify low quantities of carbon monoxide gas. XRD studies reveal the single-phase wurtzite structure of ZnO thin films, thereby confirming the structural stability post-Ga doping. Raman examination discloses the vibrational characteristics and provides some early insights into the existence of defects in the films. The nanograins having well-defined grain boundaries noticed from the inspection of SEM images participate in the gas sensing performance as the site for the active adsorption of CO molecules. The defects, mainly oxygen vacancies responsible for the enhancement in the CO sensing characteristics were confirmed from room temperature photoluminescence (RTPL) spectra and XPS analysis. The CO sensing measurements reveal that 15 wt% GZO exhibited the highest sensing performance of 0.08 towards 1 ppm and 0.41 towards 5 ppm. GZO thin films had response and recovery times that were both extraordinarily quick under 40 s

Abstract:A high performance ozone gas sensor is fabricated using high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) process with nanoporous ZnO as the sensing material which is deposited on micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) device. The morphology and nanostructure properties of ZnO were tested with XRD , SEM, TEM, EDS and XPS. As the sensor is tested at different temperatures, the sensor showed high sensing response at 200 °C operating temperature and with 400 °C annealed sample of nanoporous ZnO sensor. Low concentrations of ozone were chosen to obtain best possible sensing response characteristics ranging from 50 ppb to 1000 ppb. At 1000 ppb, sensor recorded a high 638% sensing response at 200 °C optimal temperature. Selectivity test and effects of relative humidity data is presented in the study, where sensor had high selectivity towards O 3 gas and the sensing response showed decreasing trend with increase in relative humidity. The reason behind sensing mechanism of the nanoporous ZnO sensor is explained due to the adsorption and desorption phenomenon on the surface of ZnO sensor.

Abstract:The detection of environmental gases in the atmosphere is a topic of interest for public security, environmental pollution and industrial emission. In recent years, semiconductor-based gas sensor attracted wide attention in all over the world. Among various hazardous gases, detection of CO at low temperature with fast response and recovery time is still a challenge. In this work, we have adopted single step synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoroads for the fabrication of CO gas sensor. This sensor is found to have ~8% sensitivity with fast response time of the order of 10s at 50C. Also, selectivity of these sensors has been investigated for different gases and observed that ZnO are more active for CO gas at 50C. The sensitivity of ZnO based sensor is explained in terms of interaction of CO molecules with adsorbed oxygen vacancies in ZnO which promote better pathway to the charge carrier. The sensing material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To, the best our knowledge, the detection of 15 ppm CO at 50 with good sensitivity is reported first time.

Multifunctional Three-in-One Sensor on t-ZnO for Ultraviolet and VOC Sensing for Bioengineering Applications

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) is considered to be one of the most explored and reliable sensing materials for UV detection due to its excellent properties, like a wide band gap and high exciton energy. Our current study on a photodetector based on tetrapodal ZnO (t-ZnO) reported an extremely high UV response of ~9200 for 394 nm UV illumination at 25 °C. The t-ZnO network structure and morphology were investigated using XRD and SEM. The sensor showed a UV/visible ratio of ~12 at 25 °C for 394 nm UV illumination and 443 nm visible illumination. By increasing the temperature, monotonic decreases in response and recovery time were observed. By increasing the bias voltage, the response time was found to decrease while the recovery time was increased. The maximum responsivity shifted to higher wavelengths from 394 nm to 400 nm by increasing the operating temperature from 25 °C to 100 °C. The t-ZnO networks exhibited gas-sensing performances at temperatures above 250 °C, and a maximum response of ~1.35 was recorded at 350 °C with a good repeatability and fast recovery in 16 s for 100 ppm of n-butanol vapor. This study demonstrated that t-ZnO networks are good biosensors that can be used for diverse biomedical applications like the sensing of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and ultraviolet detection under a wide range of temperatures, and may find new possibilities in biosensing applications.

Abstract:A chemical sensor for ozone based on an array of microfabricated tuning forks is described. The tuning forks are highly sensitive and stable, with low power consumption and cost. The selective detection is based on the specific reaction of the polymer with ozone. With a mass detection limit of ∼2 pg/mm(2) and response time of 1 second, the sensor coated with a polymer sensing material can detect ppb-level ozone in air. The sensor is integrated into a miniaturized wearable device containing a detection circuit, filtration, battery and wireless communication chip, which is ideal for personal and microenvironmental chemical exposure monitoring.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention as potential gas sensing elements due to their unique ability to detect and respond to an external stimulus with measurable electrical or optical signals. The distinctive characteristics of these materials lie in their ability to operate upon gas exposure at room temperature. However, the presence of lead (Pb) poses a serious challenge for their widespread application and commercialization, owing to its toxicity. To address this issue, lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite is explored as a promising alternative sensing element for room temperature gas detection. This sensor can be regarded as eco-friendly for the following reasons: it does not contain Pb; it is synthesized at room temperature without using strong organic solvents; and it operates and recovers at room temperature without heating or UV irradiation and with a very low input voltage (0.1V), thus reducing overall energy consumption. The influence of the perovskite morphology on the ozone (O3) sensing performance is investigated, as well as the sensing stability under varying conditions of time, humidity, and temperature. Notably, the sensors' exceptional selectivity for O3 over other gases and the interaction between the gases and the perovskite surface is confirmed through experimental and first-principles calculations.
