Abstract:This study aims to investigate (i) whether participants adopt a good-enough interpretation when reading Cantonese early closure garden-path sentences and (ii) the effect of the verbal suffix on the re-analysis of sentences. Previous studies found that people retain the initial misinterpretation more often when English early closure sentences consist of optionally transitive (OPT) verbs instead of reflexive absolute transitive (RAT) verbs. It is suggested that this is because OPT verbs allow more inferencing 1. Cantonese is known for its rich post-verbal elements and some verbs become OPT or RAT phrases when combined with suitable verbal suffixes 2. So, we want to study whether these verbal suffixes can have the same effect on comprehension. Another feature of the current study is that it consists of early closure sentences with incompatible initial misinterpretation and correct interpretation, which prevent inferencing 3.
