Abstract:We present the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://physics.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this ongoing program of research, we discuss recent results as they relate to the interplay of the attendant IR-Improved DGLAP-CS theory of one of us and the precision of exact NLO matrix element matched parton shower MC's in the Herwig6.5 environment in relation to recent LHC experimental observations. There continues to be reason for optimism in the attendant comparison of theory and experiment.

Abstract:The precision study of production with subsequent and decays at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) aids in the investigation of Higgs gauge couplings and the search for new physics beyond the standard model. In this study, we calculate the shower-matched next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak (EW) corrections from the annihilation and photon-induced channels to the production at the LHC. We deal with the subsequent decays of Higgs and bosons by adopting the MADSPIN method. Both the integrated cross section and some kinematic distributions of, H, and their decay products are provided. We find that the QCD correction significantly enhances the leading-order differential cross section, while the EW correction from the annihilation channel obviously suppresses it, especially in the high energy phase-space region, due to the Sudakov effect. The- and-induced relative corrections are positive and insensitive to the transverse momenta of, H, and their decay products. These photon-induced corrections compensate the negative-initiated EW correction, and become the dominant EW contribution as the increment of the colliding energy. The parton shower (PS) effects on kinematic distributions are not negligible. The relative PS correction to the b-jet transverse momentum distribution can exceed 100% in the high region. Moreover, we investigate the scale and PDF uncertainties, and find that the theoretical error of the-corrected integrated cross section mainly originates from the renormalization scale dependence of the QCD correction.

Abstract:KKMChh is a precision Monte Carlo program for photonic and electroweak radiative corrections to hadron scattering, implementing the amplitude-level exponentiation originally developed for electron-positron scattering at the quark level, modeling initial and final state QED radiation as well as initial-final interference to all orders in a soft-photon approximation, adding hard photon corrections through second order next-to-leading logarithm. A previous ICHEP talk introduced a matching procedure NISR (negative initial-state radiation) to match the exponentiated photon radiation from the quarks to a QED-corrected parton shower. Here, we describe its effect on forward-backward asymmetry calculations of interest for a precise determination of the electroweak mixing angle.

Abstract:We present the current status of the comparisons with the respective data of the predictions of our approach of exact amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory as applied to precision QCD calculations as needed for LHC physics, using the MC Herwiri1.031. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the data exhibited continues to be encouraging.

Resummation of combined QCD-electroweak effects in Drell Yan lepton-pair production

Abstract:We consider neutral- and charged-current Drell Yan lepton-pair production at hadron colliders, and include dominant classes of electroweak and mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to all orders in perturbation theory. The accurate description of these physical effects is vital for a precise determination of fundamental Standard Model parameters, such as the $W$-boson mass and the electroweak mixing angle, as well as for a solid assessment of the associated theoretical uncertainties. Our state-of-the-art resummation reaches next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy in both the electroweak and the mixed QCD-electroweak perturbative expansions, including constant terms at first order beyond Born level in both couplings, i.e. at order $\alpha$ and $\alpha_s \alpha$. These effects are incorporated on top of QCD predictions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, which include constant terms at third order in the strong coupling. Our results retain, for the first time at this accuracy, full dependence on the kinematics of the final-state leptons, thereby enabling a realistic comparison with experimental analyses at the differential level in presence of fiducial cuts. We present a phenomenological analysis of the impact of electroweak corrections in relevant observables at the LHC. We find visible shape distortions in resummation-dominated kinematical regions with respect to pure-QCD predictions, highlighting the importance of a complete description, not limited to QCD, for precision Drell Yan physics.

Resummation phenomenology and PDF determination for precision QCD at the LHC

Abstract:With the ongoing Run 3 of the LHC and its upcoming High-Luminosity upgrade, there is a growing need to study observables with high precision both experimentally and theoretically. To increase precision on the theory side, improvements of fixed-order perturbative predictions, resummation of logarithmic enhancements and accurate determination of proton structure are required. This thesis explores the latter two topics. We discuss high-energy logarithms and their resummation techniques, introducing an extension of the HELL formalism for multi-differential distributions in transverse momentum, rapidity and invariant mass. We apply this framework to heavy-quark pair production at the LHC, studying the kinematics of both a single quark and the final-state pair. An additional discussion is dedicated to a possible extension of the kt-factorisation framework, which underlies high-energy resummation, to capture next-to-leading logarithmic corrections. To test this hypothesis, we delve into the computation of a NLO off-shell coefficient function using Higgs-induced DIS in the infinite top mass limit as a benchmark process and report a partial result. Beside high-energy logarithms, we consider the determination of transverse-momentum distributions from a high mass system with additional QCD radiation and exclusive production cuts. Specifically, we focus on $HW^+$ production with a jet veto and analyse the Higgs transverse momentum spectrum at NNLO, using qt-subtraction. We complement the fixed order study with NNLL resummation of jet-veto logarithms and linear power correction in ptHW using the RadISH formalism. Finally, in the last project pertaining to this thesis we consider the problem of Parton Distribution Function determination. We propose a minimal parametrisation guided by physical arguments and investigate its performance in fitting the HERA dataset with NLO QCD theory predictions.

Abstract:The search for new interactions and particles in high-energy collider physics relies on precise background predictions. This has led to many advances in combining precise fixed-order cross-section calculations with detailed event generator simulations. In recent years, fixed-order QCD calculations of inclusive cross sections at N3LO precision have emerged, followed by an impressive progress at producing differential results. Once differential results become publicly available, it would be prudent to embed these into event generators to allow the community to leverage these advances. This note offers some concrete thoughts on ME+PS matching at third order in QCD. As a method for testing these thoughts, a toy calculation of $e^+e^-\rightarrow u \bar u$ at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ is constructed, and combined with an event generator through unitary matching. The toy implementation may serve also as blueprint for high-precision QCD predictions at future lepton colliders. As a byproduct of the N3LO matching formula, a new NNLO+PS formula for processes with "additional" jets is obtained.

Abstract:We improve the theoretical predictions for the production of extra neutral gauge bosons at hadron colliders by implementing the Z′-bosons in the MC@NLO generator and by computing their differential and total cross sections in joint pT and threshold resummation. The two improved predictions are found to be in excellent agreement with each other for mass spectra, pT spectra, and total cross sections, while the PYTHIA parton and “power” shower predictions usually employed for experimental analyses show significant shortcomings both in normalization and shape. The theoretical uncertainties from scale and parton density variations and non-perturbative effects are found to be +6/−3%, +/−5%, and less than +3/−6%, respectively, and thus under good control. The implementation of our improved predictions in terms of the new MC@NLO generator or resummed K factors in the analysis chains of the Tevatron and LHC experiments should be straightforward and lead to more precise determinations or limits of the Z′-boson masses and/or couplings.

Abstract:The precision study of $W^-W^+H$ production with subsequent $W^{\pm} \rightarrow l^{\pm} \overset{ _{(-)}}{\nu_{l}}$ and $H \rightarrow b\bar{b}$ decays at the LHC can help us to study the Higgs gauge couplings and to search for new physics beyond the SM. In this paper, we calculate the shower-matched NLO QCD correction and the EW corrections from the $q\bar{q}$ annihilation and photon-induced channels to the $W^-W^+H$ production at the $14~ {\rm TeV}$ LHC, and deal with the subsequent decays of Higgs and $W^{\pm}$ bosons by adopting the {\sc MadSpin} method. Both the integrated cross section and some kinematic distributions of $W^{\pm}$, $H$ and their decay products are provided. We find that the QCD correction enhances the LO differential cross section significantly, while the EW correction from the $q\bar{q}$ annihilation channel obviously suppresses the LO differential cross section, especially in the high energy phase-space region due to the Sudakov effect. The $q\gamma$- and $\gamma\gamma$-induced relative corrections are positive, and insensitive to the transverse momenta of $W^{\pm}$, $H$ and their decay products. These photon-induced corrections compensate the negative $q\bar{q}$-initiated EW correction, and become the dominant EW contribution as the increment of the $pp$ colliding energy. The parton shower (PS) effects on the kinematic distributions are nonnegligible. We also investigate the scale and PDF uncertainties, and find that the theoretical error of the ${\rm QCD}+{\rm EW}+q\gamma+\gamma\gamma$ corrected integrated cross section mainly comes from the renormalization scale dependence of the QCD correction.
Phenomenology of Electroweak Portal Dark Showers: High Energy Direct Probes and Low Energy Complementarity

Abstract:We investigate the phenomenology of a dark QCD sector interacting with the Standard Model (SM) via the electroweak (EW) portals. The portal interactions allow SM bosons, such as $Z$ and $h$, or additional bosons that mix with them, to decay into dark quarks, producing dark showers. The light dark mesons are expected to be long-lived particles (LLPs), as their decays back to the SM states through the EW-portal interactions typically have macroscopic decay lengths. We focus on dark shower events initiated by various bosons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The most prominent signal is the displaced decay of GeV-scale dark pions as LLPs. Current limits on dark shower signals at LHC detectors are recast from public data in a model-independent manner. Future limits in the high-luminosity phase and proposed auxiliary detectors are also projected. Additionally, we study the flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) $B$ decays into dark pions, obtaining both current and projected constraints at the LHC and other facilities. These constraints can be combined for specific models, which are illustrated in two EW-portal benchmarks: one with the heavy doublet fermion mediation and another with the $Z^\prime$ mediator including a mass mixing. The collider reach shows significant potential to probe the parameter space unconstrained by EW precision tests, highlighting the necessity of dedicated LLP search strategies and facilities.

Abstract:The splitting processes of bremsstrahlung and pair production in a medium are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, which leads to a suppression known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. We continue study of the case when the coherence lengths of two consecutive splitting processes overlap (which is important for understanding corrections to standard treatments of the LPM effect in QCD), avoiding soft-emission approximations. In this particular paper, we show (i) how the "instantaneous" interactions of Light-Cone Perturbation Theory must be included in the calculation to account for effects of longitudinally-polarized gauge bosons in intermediate states, and (ii) how to compute virtual corrections to LPM emission rates, which will be necessary in order to make infrared-safe calculations of the characteristics of in-medium QCD showering of high-energy partons. In order to develop these topics in as simple a context as possible, we will focus in the current paper not on QCD but on large-$N_f$ QED, where $N_f$ is the number of electron flavors.

Abstract:We develop a framework for a systematic resummation of the transverse momentum distribution of top-quark pairs produced at hadron colliders based on effective field theory. Compared to Drell-Yan and Higgs production, a novel soft function matrix is required to account for the soft gluon emissions from the final states. We calculate this soft function at the next-to-leading order, and perform the resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We compare our results with parton shower programs and with the experimental data at the Tevatron and the LHC. We also discuss the implications for the top quark charge asymmetry.

Abstract:Low-energy experiments allow for some of the most precise measurements in particle physics, such as $g-2$. To make the most of these experiments, theory needs to match the experimental precision. Over the last decade, this meant that even in QED next-to-next-to-leading order calculations (or even more in some cases) became necessary. McMule (Monte Carlo for MUons and other LEptons) is a framework that we have developed to obtain NNLO predictions for a number of processes, such as $e\mu \to e\mu$, $ee\to ee$, and $\mu\to e\nu\bar\nu$. I will discuss some of the challenges faced when dealing with QED corrections and some possible solutions we have implemented in McMule, namely the subtraction scheme FKS$^\ell$, massification, and next-to-soft stabilisation. I will also demonstrate how to calculate the three-loop massification constant that will be required at N$^3$LO.

Abstract:KKMChh adapts the CEEX (Coherent Exclusive Exponentiation) formalism of the Monte Carlo Program KKMC for Z boson production and decay to hadron scattering. Amplitude-level soft photon exponentiation of initial and final state radiation, together with initial-final interference, is matched to a perturbative calculation to second order next-to-leading logarithm, and electroweak corrections to the hard process are included via DIZET. The first release of KKMChh included complete initial state radiation calculated with current quark masses. This version assumes idealized pure-QCD PDFs with negligible QED contamination. Traditional PDFs neglect QED evolution but are not necessarily free of QED influence in the data. QED-corrected PDFs provide a firmer starting point for precision QED work. We describe a new procedure for matching KKMChh's initial state radiation to a QED-corrected PDF, and compare this to earlier approaches.
Learning from Radiation at a Very High Energy Lepton Collider

Abstract:We study the potential of lepton collisions with about $10\text{ TeV}$ center of mass energy to probe Electroweak, Higgs and Top short-distance physics at the $100\text{ TeV}$ scale, pointing out the interplay with the long-distance ($100\text{ GeV}$) phenomenon of Electroweak radiation. On one hand, we find that sufficiently accurate theoretical predictions require the resummed inclusion of radiation effects, which we perform at the double logarithmic order. On the other hand, we notice that short-distance physics does influence the emission of Electroweak radiation. Therefore the investigation of the radiation pattern can enhance the sensitivity to new short-distance physical laws. We illustrate these aspects by studying Effective Field Theory contact interactions in di-fermion and di-boson production, and comparing cross-section measurements that require or that exclude the emission of massive Electroweak bosons. The combination of the two types of measurements is found to enhance the sensitivity to the new interactions. Based on these results, we perform sensitivity projections to Higgs and Top Compositeness and to minimal $Z'$ new physics scenarios at future muon colliders.

Abstract:With an eye toward the precision physics of the LHC, such as the recent measurement of $M_W$ by the ATLAS Collaboration, we present here systematic studies relevant to the assessment of the expected size of multiple photon radiative effects in heavy gauge boson production with decay to charged lepton pairs. We use the new version 4.22 of ${\cal KK}$MC-hh so that we have CEEX EW exact ${\cal O}(\alpha^2 L)$ corrections in a hadronic MC and control over the corresponding EW initial-final interference (IFI) effects as well. In this way, we illustrate the interplay between cuts of the type used in the measurement of $M_W$ at the LHC and the sizes of the expected responses of the attendant higher order corrections. We find that there are per cent to per mille level effects in the initial-state radiation, fractional per mille level effects in the IFI and per mille level effects in the over-all ${\cal O}(\alpha^2 L)$ corrections that any treatment of EW corrections at the per mille level should consider. Our results have direct applicability to current LHC experimental data analyses.

Abstract:We study the evolution of a partonic jet shower propagating through a quark-gluon plasma. Combining the in-medium evolutions of the leading parton and shower gluons, we compute the depletion of the energy from the jet cone by dissipation through elastic collisions with medium constituents, by scattering of shower partons to larger angles, and by radiation outside the jet cone. Numerical results are presented for the nuclear modification of dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large x are poorly constrained by high-energy experimental data, but extremely important for probing physics beyond standard model at colliders. We study the calculation of PDFs at large-x through large-momentum P^z expansion of the lattice quasi PDFs. Similar to deep-inelastic scattering, there are two distinct perturbative scales in the threshold limit where the matching coefficient can be factorized into a space-like jet function at scale P^z|1-y| and a pair of heavy-light Sudakov form factors at scale P^z. The matching formula allows us to derive a full renormalization group resummation of large threshold logarithms, and the result is consistent with the known calculation to the next-to-next to leading order (NNLO). This paves the way for direct large-x PDFs calculations in lattice QCD. As by-products, we find that the space-like jet function is related to a time-like version calculated previously through analytic continuation, and the heavy-light Sudakov form factor, calculated here to NNLO, is a universal object appearing as well in the large momentum expansion of quasi transverse-momentum-dependent PDFs and quasi wave-function amplitudes.
