Abstract:Presently, governments across the globe are encouraging the industry to reassess their manufacturing techniques with the aim of reducing reliance on fossil resources and mitigating the environmental consequences associated with products over their entire life cycle. Hence, the advancement of novel biobased and biodegradable materials poses a significant challenge. This study involves the preparation of blends consisting of poly(butylene succinate adipate) (PBSA) and poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) in an 80:20 ratio. The blends are generated by a melt mixing process utilizing ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvent (DES) as interfacial agents. The interfacial agents are added at a concentration of only 2 wt %. Consequently, there is a notable decrease in the size of PHB particles and an enhancement in the interfacial adhesion between PBSA and PHB, resulting in the attainment of a uniform morphology with particle sizes ranging from 0.4 to 1 μm. Subsequently, the utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) or deep eutectic solvent (DES) resulted in a notable elevation of the glass-transition temperature, shifting it from −48 to −18 °C for the poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) polymer. This observation suggests an improved compatibility of the poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) phases inside the PBSA matrix. Ultimately, the improved compatibility between poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) and poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) resulted in enhanced mechanical properties, including a higher Young’s modulus (2186 compared to 896 MPa) and elongation at break (301 compared to 138%). Additionally, this compatibility led to increased thermal stability, with a temperature increase of 100 °C. Additionally, the inclusion of a limited quantity of these interfacial agents demonstrated substantial decreases in oxygen permeability (by 93%) and water vapor penetration (by 82%), underscoring the considerable potential of these compostable and biodegradable blends for many applications.
