Abstract:Entropy is a fundamental concept in thermodynamics that characterizes the level of disorder or chaos within a system. Negative entropy is the process of fixing unavailable disordered energy into available ordered energy, which can serve as a valuable indicator of the sustainability and efficiency of wastewater treatment process. This study explored the utilization of photogranules (light-driven aerobic granular sludge) as a wastewater treatment process with minimal energy dissipation and effective resource recovery. This study focuses on the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling pathways of photogranules, including treatment performance, resource recovery, neg-entropy evaluation (NEE), and their corresponding metabolic mechanisms. Photogranules showed 94.1 % COD, 96.1 % ammonium and 88.9 % phosphorus removal ratios, respectively. Moreover, the successful recovery of proteins 337.61 mg/g, polysaccharides 87.67 mg/g, lipid 206.6 mg/g, which achieved negentropy. Notably, the microorganisms Scenedesmus , responsible for carbon fixation, and Allorhizobium , responsible for nitrogen fixation, play pivotal roles in driving the negentropy process. During carbon fixation, light energy is converted into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis, The dark reaction phase of photosynthesis involves the production of glucose, and it has been found to have a thermodynamic value of −14134.8 J/(mol·K), indicating a decrease in entropy. Thermodynamic modeling further supports the concept that photogranules achieve negentropy. They accomplish this by effectively sequestering and converting non-renewable light resources into a state of low entropy. In summary, NEE provides a novel insight into not only the sustainability of photogranules but also other wastewater treatment process.
