Abstract:The northeastern forest region of China is an important component of total temperate and boreal forests in the northern hemisphere. But how carbon (C) pool size and distribution varies among tree, understory, forest floor and soil components, and across stand ages remains unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we selected three major temperate and two major boreal forest types in northeastern (NE) China. Within both forest zones, we focused on four stand age classes (young, mid-aged, mature and over-mature). Results showed that total C storage was greater in temperate than in boreal forests, and greater in older than in younger stands. Tree biomass C was the main C component, and its contribution to the total forest C storage increased with increasing stand age. It ranged from 27.7% in young to 62.8% in over-mature stands in boreal forests and from 26.5% in young to 72.8% in over-mature stands in temperate forests. Results from both forest zones thus confirm the large biomass C storage capacity of old-growth forests. Tree biomass C was influenced by forest zone, stand age, and forest type. Soil C contribution to total forest C storage ranged from 62.5% in young to 30.1% in over-mature stands in boreal and from 70.1% in young to 26.0% in over-mature in temperate forests. Thus soil C storage is a major C pool in forests of NE China. On the other hand, understory and forest floor C jointly contained less than 13% and <5%, in boreal and temperate forests respectively, and thus play a minor role in total forest C storage in NE China.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, China has implemented extensive reforestation programs, primarily utilizing Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) in southern China, to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and counter extreme climate events. However, the effects of drought on the carbon sequestration capacity of these forests, particularly during the trunk wood stage, remain unclear. This study, conducted in Huitong, Hunan, China, from 2008 to 2013, employed the eddy covariance method to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) and water fluxes in Chinese fir forests, covering a severe drought year in 2011. The purpose was to elucidate the dynamics of carbon and water fluxes during a drought year and across multi-normal year averages. The results showed that changes in soil water content (−8.00%), precipitation (−18.45%), and relative humidity (−5.10%), decreases in air temperature (−0.09 °C) and soil temperature (−0.79 °C), and increases in vapor pressure deficit (19.18%) and net radiation (8.39%) were found in the drought year compared to the normal years. These changes in environmental factors led to considerable decreases in net ecosystem exchange (−40.00%), ecosystem respiration (−13.09%), and gross ecosystem productivity (−18.52%), evapotranspiration (−12.50%), and water use efficiency (−5.83%) in the studied forests in the drought year. In this study, the occurrence of seasonal drought due to uneven precipitation distribution led to a decrease in gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) and evapotranspiration (ET). However, the impact of drought on GEP was greater than its effect on ET, resulting in a reduced water use efficiency (WUE). This study emphasized the crucial role of water availability in determining forest productivity and suggested the need for adjusting vegetation management strategies under severe drought conditions. Our results contributed to improving management practices for Chinese fir plantations in response to changing climate conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Chinese fir is one of the most important commercial timber species in China, with many geographic sources. However, little is known of the variation in wood physical properties among them. To explore the differences in wood physical properties and their influencing factors, five geographic sources of Chinese fir were selected. The variance inflation factor, stepwise regression, and principle component analysis were used to reduce multicollinearity and dimensions of the 19 wood physical properties (including density, shrinkage, and mechanical properties). The results showed that the wood density differed significantly among five geographic sources. The tangential shrinkage rate and radial shrinkage rate reached maximum values in black-heart Chinese fir (HNYX-T) but accompanied by the lowest value for difference dry shrinkage. The wood density and mechanical properties of HNYX-T was exceeded to that of others geographic sources. Fast-growth Chinese fir (FJYK-P) had the lowest value for all mechanical properties. The precipitation and temperature had significant correlations with the wood physical properties of this five geographic sources. The temperature in summer was mainly positive correlated with physical properties, while precipitation was negatively correlated with them. HNYX-T had the highest comprehensive score of PCA, followed by JXCS-R, emerged as higher-quality geographic source, which is important for selecting and utilizing geographic sources in forest management.

Abstract:This study was designed to analyze the changing rules of the sap flow rate of Chinese fir( Cunninghamia lan-ceolata) based on the 12 months continuous located observation of the sap flow rate and environment factors by using sap flow meter and ECH2O system from February 2012 to January 2013 in Dongshanqiao Forest Farm of Nanjing. The results indicated that the sap flow rate of Chinese fir showed distinct diurnal changing rhythms both in sunny and cloudy days in different seasons. The change of the sap flow showed a single-peak curve. The crest values of the sap flow rate in spring, summer, autumn and winter were 0. 71-1. 44, 1. 45-3. 49, 0. 55-1. 91 and 0. 30-0. 85 kg/h, respectively. The crest value of summer was the highest, that of the winter was the lowest. The greater rainfall, the earlier the sap flow rate starting and the higher peak, the longer of impact. In winter, the sap flow rate increased rapidly when it rained, after the rain the sap flow rate would decrease soon. In summer, the sap flow rate would show obvious rise in the daytime after the rain, and in the later days it would decrease gradually to the original level. There existed seasonal differences for the main environmental factors that influenced the sap flow rate. The main environmental factors of spring, summer, autumn and winter were VPD(0.884), air relative humidity(-0.882), VPD(0.798) and solar radiation in field (0.621). Soil temperature was an important environmental factor that influenced the average daily sap flow rate of Chinese fir.

Abstract:Variations in foliar stable carbon isotope signatures (delta C-13) of different plant functional groups (PFGs) and their relationships with environmental factors in China were investigated in this meta-analysis. There were some significant, but small differences in delta C-13 among PFGs categorised by life form (<1 parts per thousand). Trees (-26.78 parts per thousand) and shrubs (-26.89 parts per thousand) had similar mean delta C-13 that were significantly higher than those of herbs (-27.49 parts per thousand). Evergreen shrubs (-25.82 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than deciduous shrubs (-26.92 parts per thousand). Perennial herbs (-26.83 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than annual herbs (-27.10 parts per thousand). Grasses (-26.46 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than forbs (-26.96 parts per thousand). For pooled data, delta C-13 was significantly and negatively correlated with mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT), while it was significantly and positively correlated with latitude and altitude. There was a threshold value of MAP along the gradients, and delta C-13 did not change significantly with higher rainfall. The delta C-13 of PFGs changed with altitude, suggesting that increases in delta C-13 with altitude cannot be generalised. Differences in delta C-13 between PFGs were generally much <1 parts per thousand and therefore insignificant. In contrast, MAP and MAT had relatively large effects on delta C-13 (more than 4 parts per thousand between extremes). The delta C-13 of some PFGs responded to environmental gradients in the same manner, while their rates of change were significantly different in some cases. This information could help predict potential changes in the distribution of PFGs in response to future climate change.

Abstract:Leaf δ 13C of different plant functional groups (trees, shrubs and forbs; evergreen and deciduous; annual, biennial and perennial) were examined on the Changbai Mountains, China. Life form has a significant influence on plant δ 13C, suggesting that leaf δ 13C is also ideal for distinguishing functional groups species in temperate and frigid zones with high humidity. Additionally, the difference of water-use efficiency (WUE) is significant among different plant functional groups. δ 13C and WUE are in the following order of forbs < shrubs < trees. Within shrubs, δ 13C and WUE are higher for evergreen shrubs than deciduous shrubs. Differences in δ 13C and WUE are significant among different lifespan herbs, and δ 13C and WUE follow the order of annual herbs > biennial herbs > perennial herbs, not in accordance with the pattern obtained by previous studies in deserts, suggesting that the ranking of δ 13C and WUE among annual, biennial and perennial herbs may be dependent on local water availability.
Leaf respiration/photosynthesis relationship and variation: an investigation of 39 woody and herbaceous species in east subtropical China

Abstract:Thirty-nine plant species including woody and herbaceous species grown in wet and warm subtropical regions were collected and classified into woody and herb functional groups. Net photosynthesis ( P n ) and dark respiration ( R ) were measured at constant 25°C under neither water nor nitrogen limited condition to assess whether the R / P n ratio was constant across different species and functional groups. Our results suggest that P n and R were highly skewed among the 39 species, ranging from 5 to 25 and 1 to 5 μmol m −2 s −1 , respectively, while R / P n ratio was normally distributed at 0.1–0.3. Mean R / P n ratio was 0.19 for 39 species, and 0.20 and 0.18 for woody and herbs, respectively, showing no significant difference between the two groups. Leaf P n , R , and R / P n ratios exhibited large variations across 39 species while R / P n ratio in our subtropical species was considerably higher than other studies. Our results also indicated that the difference within each group was even larger than between the two groups. Based on the pooled data set at global scale, and considering R / P n ratios performance under a combination of wet and warm conditions, the mean R / P n ratio of 0.19 fell between the R / P n ratio of 0.23 under dry and warm conditions and the R / P n ratio of 0.07 under cold regardless of the precipitation conditions. The comparison with published data sets indicated significant effects of long-term precipitation and temperature on leaf R / P n ratios at global scale, and we found that the plants adapting to warm and wet climates including our thirty-nine species tend to have a lower R / P n ratio.

Abstract:Plantation cultivation plays an important role in improving terrestrial ecosystem functions and services. Understanding the water-use patterns of major afforestation species is vital for formulating ecological restoration strategies and predicting the response of plantation to climate change. However, the impacts and drivers of forest types on water-use patterns of key tree species are poorly understood. Here, the combined methods of dual stable isotope of δ D and δ 18 O and Bayesian mixed framework (MixSIAR) were employed to investigate the water-use patterns of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Chinese fir) in a monoculture, mixed forest with Cinnamomum camphora , and mixed forest with Alnus cremastogyne under different rainfall events in subtropical China. Furthermore, the relative contribution of different soil and plant factors to the water-use patterns of Chinese fir was quantified using a random forest model. Our results showed that Chinese fir in the mixed forests (with C. camphora or with A. cremastogyne ) utilized less water from shallow soil compared to that in a monoculture but significantly improved the proportion of water absorbed from deep soil with the increase of 55.57%–64.90% and 68.99%–108.83% following moderate and heavy rainfall events, respectively. The most important factors contributing to the differences in water-use patterns of Chinese fir among monoculture and mixed forests were tree attributes (i.e., leaf biomass, eco-physiological regulation, and fine root biomass). These findings reveal that Chinese fir in mixed forests could optimize water-use patterns by adjusting plant properties for interspecific niche complementarity, improving the utilization of deep soil water. Overall, this study suggests that mixed-species plantations could improve water-use efficiency and reduce the sensitivity of tree species to precipitation change, indicating they are better able to cope with expected climate variability.

Abstract:Although maintaining relatively constant fine root biomass along the soil profile, Chinese fir plantation could adapt to warming‐induced moderate water stress through contrasting root morphological adjustments in topsoil and subsoil, probably to coordinate the acquisition of both soil water and nutrients. Measuring root traits in topsoil only may limit our understanding of the responses of whole root systems. Warming‐induced soil drought, especially in topsoil, may enlarge the spatial mismatch between nutrients and water along the soil profile, which impedes the uptake of not only water but also nutrients by trees. Therefore, coordinating the acquisition of soil water and nutrients along the soil profile is an important strategy for trees to cope with global warming. This study examined soil depth‐related changes in nutrient concentrations, biomass and morphology of fine roots in a Chinese fir plantation after 3 years of large‐scale manipulative soil warming. Soil warming (ambient +4°C) increased fine root nitrogen (N) concentrations but decreased fine root phosphorus (P) concentrations across soil depths. Warming did not affect total fine root biomass and its vertical distribution. At the 0–10 cm depth, warming increased specific root length (SRL), specific root area (SRA), fine root diameter (RD) and root length density (RLD) but reduced root tissue density (RTD). In the 40–60 cm layer, warming reduced RD, SRL and RLD while increasing RTD mainly for roots of the 1–2 mm diameter class. Synthesis. We concluded that roots of Chinese fir plantations could adapt to warming‐induced moderate water stress through contrasting depth‐related root morphological adjustments, probably to optimize the acquisition of both soil water and nutrients. Abstract:Abstract Background Studies on intra-specific variability in leaf functional traits is important to evaluate adaptation of the species to predicted climate change, and to develop long-term conservation strategy. The main objectives were to investigate the relationship between the functional traits leaves and C, N, P stoichiometry of Chinese fir from different geographical provenances and their relationship with the main environmental factors of provenance. Results In this study, we measured 12 leaf functional traits on 36-year-old Cunninghamia lanceolata trees from 13 provenances. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to examine the variability. Redundancy analysis (RA) was computed to examine the relationship between geo-climatic factors of provenance origin and leaf functional traits while Pearson’s correlation coefficient was computed to assess inter-trait correlations. The results showed statistically significant differences ( P < 0.01) in intraspecific leaf traits among provenances, except leaf P content. The relationships among leaf traits are consistent with the general trend observed in the leaf economic spectrum. Mean annual temperature appeared to be a key factor that influences intraspecific leaf traits variability compared to mean annual precipitation. Conclusion These results provide useful insights about adaptation of leaf trait of Chinese fir in a changing climatic condition. Thus, our findings shed light on the importance of interspecific trait variability in Chinese fir and the potential effect of climate change.

Abstract:Climate change has had a widespread and profound impact on global temperature and precipitation patterns, especially in semi-arid areas. Plant δ13C and iWUE indicate the trade-off between carbon uptake and water loss, which is pivotal for understanding plant responses to climate change. Information about the long-term responses of the physiological and ecological processes of different tree species to climate change is also required. To investigate the impact of different forest stand structures and site conditions on long-term growth and physiological processes of coniferous and broad-leaved trees in the mountainous area of Beijing, we analyzed the tree-ring δ13C variation of four tree species (Platycladus orientalis, Pinus tabuliformis, Quercus variabilis, Robinia pseudoacacia) sampled from 64 plots with varying site and stand conditions. We found that the tree-ring δ13C of the four tree species varied from each other and was mainly affected by density and slope aspect, followed by slope and age. Both tree-ring δ13C and iWUE of the four tree species showed increasing trends over time, mechanistically linked to long-term changes in global CO2 concentration. This indicates the four native tree species have adapted well to climate change, and the risk of decline is relatively low. The increased iWUE translated into different growth patterns which varied with tree species, site, and stand condition. Different tree species have varying sensitivities to environmental factors. The iWUE of coniferous tree species is more sensitive to climate change than that of broad-leaved tree species, especially to temperature (T), the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and vapor pressure deficit (VPD).
Carbon allocation in early successional tree species at elevated air humidity and different soil nitrogen sources

Abstract:Global climate change scenarios predict increasing air temperature, enhanced precipitation and air humidity for Northern latitudes. We&#8239;investigated the effects of elevated air relative humidity (RH) and different inorganic nitrogen&#8239;sources&#8239;(NO3-, NH4+) on above- and belowground traits in different tree species, with particular emphasis on rhizodeposition rates. Silver birch, hybrid aspen and Scots pine saplings were grown in PERCIVAL growth chambers with stabile temperature, light intensity and two different air humidity conditions: moderate (mRH, 65% at day and 80% at night) and elevated (eRH, 80% at day and night). The collection of fine root exudates was conducted by a culture-based cuvette method and total organic carbon content was determined by Vario TOC analyser. Fine root respiration was measured with an infra-red gas analyser CIRAS 2.&#8239;&#160;We analysed species-specific biomass allocation, water and rhizodeposition fluxes, foliar and fine root traits in response to changing environmental conditions. The&#8239;eRH&#8239;significantly decreased the transpiration flux in all species. In birch the transpiration flux was also affected by the nitrogen source. The average carbon exudation rate for aspen, birch and pine varied from 2 to 3 &#8239;&#956;g&#8239;C g-1&#8239;day&#8239;-1. The exudation rates for deciduous tree species tended to increase at&#8239;eRH, while conversely decreased for coniferous trees (p=0.045), coinciding with the changes in biomass allocation.&#8239;C flux released by fine root respiration varied more than the fine root exudation, whereas the highest root respiration was found in silver birch and lowest in aspen. At eRH the above and belowground&#8239;biomass ratio in aspen increased, at the expense of decreased root biomass and root respiration.&#8239;&#160;Moreover,&#8239;eRH&#8239;significantly affected fine root morphology, whereas the response of specific root area was reverse for deciduous and coniferous tree species. However, fine roots with lower root tissue density had higher C exudation rate. Our findings underline the importance of considering species-specific differences by&#8239;elucidating tree&#8217;s&#8239;acclimation&#8239;to environmental factors and their&#8239;interactions.&#8239;&#8239;&#160;

Abstract:The impact of extreme weather events on carbon fluxes and water-use efficiency (WUE) in revegetated areas under water-limited conditions is poorly understood. We analyzed changes in carbon fluxes and WUE over three years of eddy-covariance measurements in a Pinus tabuliformis plantation in Northeast China to investigate carbon fluxes and WUE responses to drought events at different time scales. Mean annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE), gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Re) were -368.48, 1042.42, and 673.94 g C m-2, respectively. Drought events increased NEE, as GPP was more sensitive to water stress than Re at different growing stages. Mean annual WUE was 2.46 g C kg-1 H2O, and plant phenology played a key role in WUE responses to drought. Water stress had negative and positive effects on daily WUE at the early and late growing stages, respectively, and daily WUE was generally insensitive to drought at the mid growing stage. A lagged effect existed in the carbon fluxes and WUE dynamics after drought events at various time scales. Water stress at the early growing stage was more important than that at other growing stages on annual carbon sequestration and WUE, as it dominated canopy growth in the current year. The annual mean normalized difference vegetation index controlled interannual variations in carbon fluxes and WUE in the plantation. Our findings contribute to the prediction of possible changes in carbon and water fluxes under climate warming in the afforested areas of Northeast China.

Abstract:Plant water use efficiency (WUE) is a comprehensive physiological indicator of plant growth and ability to adapt to drought. However, research on the mechanisms controlling WUE during plant growth and development remains weak. Here, we studied Pinus koraiensis as a typical evergreen conifer species in Northeast China. After collecting 80 tree samples with varying diameters at breast height (DBH), we measured δ13C and δ18O as an indicator of WUE, leaf morphology (volume, dry weight, and total epidermal area), ecological stoichiometry (carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content), and abiotic factors (light environment, soil pH, soil water content, and soil nutrient content). Correlational analysis of these variables revealed distinct differences between smaller/younger and larger/older plants: (1) In plants with DBH less than 52 cm, δ13C was positively related to DBH, and δ18O was negatively related to DBH. Plants with DBH greater than 52 cm showed no relationship between δ13C and DBH, and δ18O was positively related to DBH. (2) In plants with DBH less than 52 cm, there was a negative correlation between δ13C and δ18O and between δ13C and leaf phosphorus content (LP), but a positive correlation between δ13C and DBH, leaf mass per area (LMA), and leaf density (LD). The slopes of DBH-δ13C, δ18O-δ13C, leaf nitrogen content (LN)-δ13C, and LMA-δ13C correlations were greater in smaller plants than large plants. (3) Structural equation modelling showed that in smaller plants, DBH had a direct positive effect on δ13C content and a direct negative effect on δ18O, and there was a direct positive effect of light environment on δ18O. In larger plants, there was a direct negative effect of light environment on δ13C and a direct positive effect of DBH on light environment, as well as a negative effect of soil nitrogen content on leaf nitrogen. In smaller plants, DBH was the most important factor influencing δ13C, followed by δ18O and soil moisture, with light and soil pH showing minimal influence. In larger plants, light environment influenced δ13C the most, followed by soil nitrogen content and soil moisture content, with leaf nitrogen and DBH contributing little. The results suggest that water use efficiency strategies of P. koraiensis vary according to growth stage, and the effects of abiotic factors and functional traits vary at different growth stages.

Abstract:The chemical composition of wood is an important factor affecting the properties and utilization of wood. To compare the difference in chemical compositions between heartwood and sapwood of red-heart Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata), three graded wood, dominant, average, and overtopped trees were selected from the Chenshan Forest Station of Anfu County in Jiangxi Province. Their chemical composition parameters were determined according to international standards. Our results indicate that sapwood contains on average a higher moisture content than that of heartwood, constituting 9.4 and 8.6 percent, respectively. The pH values of wood present acidic and are higher in sapwood. Cellulose is abundant in both wood tissues; the heartwood content (52.0%) is higher than that of sapwood (48.6%) on average. Furthermore, the lignin in heartwood is slightly less than that of sapwood. Hemicellulose content is similar in heartwood and sapwood (23.4% vs. 23.1%), on average. All kinds of extractives in heartwood are substantially richer. Approximately three times more benzene–ethanol extractives are in heartwood than sapwood. This suggests that there is a considerable variation of chemical constituents among the graded woods (P < 0.05). The pH values are both significantly correlated with the contents of the four extractives in heartwood and sapwood (P < 0.05). The longitudinal variation of chemical compositions is different along the direction of tree height in heartwood and sapwood. Understanding the chemical heterogeneity of wood is vital for wood product manufacturing as well as for wood property improvement.

Precipitation Gradient Drives Divergent Relationship Between Non-Structural Carbohydrates and Water Availability in Pinus Tabulaeformis of Northern China

Abstract:Seasonal non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) dynamics in different organs can indicate the strategies trees use to cope with water stress; however, these dynamics remain poorly understood along a large precipitation gradient. In this study, we hypothesized that the correlation between water availability and NSC concentrations in different organs might be strengthened by decreasing precipitation in Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. forests in temperate China. Our results show that the concentrations of soluble sugars were lower in stems and coarse roots, and starch was higher in branches in the early growing season at drier sites. Throughout the growing season, the concentrations of soluble sugars increased in drier sites, especially for leaves, and remained stable in wetter sites, while starch concentrations were relatively stable in branches and stems at all sites. The NSC concentrations, mainly starch, decreased in coarse roots along the growing season at drier sites. Trees have a faster growth rate with an earlier cessation in active stem growth at drier sites. Interestingly, we also found a divergent relationship between NSCs in different organs and mean growing season water availability, and a stronger correlation was observed in drier sites. These results show that pine forests in arid and semi-arid regions of northern China exhibit different physiological responses to water availability, improving our understanding of the adaptive mechanisms of trees to water limitations in a warmer and drier climate.
Climate, Intrinsic Water-Use Efficiency and Tree Growth over the Past 150 Years in Humid Subtropical China

Abstract:Influence of long-term changes in climate and CO2 concentration on intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE), defined as the ratio between net photosynthesis (A) and leaf conductance (g), and tree growth remain not fully revealed in humid subtropical China, which is distinct from other arid subtropical areas with dense coverage of broadleaf forests. This study presented the first tree-ring stable carbon isotope (δ13C) and iWUE series of Pinus massoniana from 1865 to 2013 in Fujian province, humid subtropical China, and the first tree-ring width standard chronology during the period of 1836–2013 for the Niumulin Nature Reserve (NML). Tree-ring width growth was limited by precipitation in July-August (r = 0.40, p < 0.01). The tree-ring carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C) was mainly controlled by the sunshine hours (r = -0.66, p < 0.001) and relative humidity (r = 0.58, p < 0.001) in September-October, a season with rapid latewood formation in this area. The iWUE increased by 42.6% and the atmospheric CO2 concentration (ca) explained 92.6% of the iWUE variance over the last 150 years. The steady increase in iWUE suggests an active response with a proportional increase in intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) in response to increase in ca. The contribution of iWUE to tree growth in the study region is not conspicuous, which points to influences of other factors such as climate.

Abstract:Abstract Thinning is a widely used practice in forest management, but the acclimation mechanisms of fine roots to forest thinning are still unclear. We examined the variations in fine root traits of different branching orders and functional groups along a thinning intensity gradient in a 26-year-old Chinese fir ( Cunninghamia lanceolata ) plantation. With increasing thinning intensity, the root C concentration (RCC), root N concentration (RNC), specific root area (SRA), and specific root length (SRL) of the absorptive roots (the first two orders) significantly decreased, while root abundance (root biomass and root length density) and root tissue density (RTD) significantly increased. Fifty-four percent of the variation in the absorptive root traits could be explained by the soil N concentration and the biomass and diversity of the understorey vegetation. Conversely, transport root (third- and higher-order) traits did not vary significantly among different thinning intensities. The covariation of absorptive root traits across thinning intensities regarding two dimensions was as follows: the first dimension (46% of the total variation) represented changes in root abundance and chemical traits (related to RCC, RNC), belonging to an extensive foraging strategy; the second dimension (41% of the total variation) represented variations in root morphological traits (related to RTD, SRL and SRA), which is an intensive foraging strategy (i.e., root economic spectrum). These results suggested that the absorptive roots of Chinese fir adopt two-dimensional strategies to acclimate to the altered surroundings after thinning.

Abstract:In this study, we examined the regularity of phenological rhythmical change of plant water-soluble compound δ13C (δ13Cwsc) in spring for two typical tree species in the warm temperate zone of China, Pinus tabuliformis and Robinia pseudoacacia. The δ13Cwsc in each organ of those two species in the spring phenological period were measured to explore the relationship between δ13Cwsc and related environmental factors. The results showed that there were significant differences in δ13Cwsc values of each organ between P. tabuliformis and R. pseudoacacia, with higher δ13Cwsc(-25.03‰±0.01‰) in the new shoot of P. tabuliformis. The δ13Cwsc value in the non-photosynthetic organs were 0.83‰-1.8‰ higher than that in the photosynthetic organs, while the δ13Cwsc value in the aboveground part was generally lower than that in the underground part. As spring progressing, different carbon storage strategies were found between two species. When the terminal bud of P. tabuliformis opened, the carbon was obtained from the proximal old leaves. At the beginning of leaf development, photosynthetic products accumulated by old leaves could not meet the growth requirements for new leaves and roots, with 90% of which depending on the carbon reserve in branches and stems. When full leaf having developed, the photosynthetic function of both new and old leaves recovered and the carbon consumed by branches and stems was gradually replenished. For R. pseudoacacia, at the beginning of leaf bud opening and leaf spreading, branches were the main carbon source for new leaves and roots. When leaves were fully unfolded, mature leaves with high capacity of carbon sequestration became the primary carbon source. Results of principal component analysis showed that temperature during observation period, ≥10 ℃ accumulated temperature, sunshine duration and solar radiation were the main factors influencing δ13Cwsc, which could explained 86.3% of the total variation. The δ13Cwsc values of both species was negatively correlated with temperature and relative humidity, but positively correlated with the difference of saturated water pressure, ≥10 ℃ accumulated temperature and sunshine duration. The main environmental factors affecting plant δ13Cwsc varied during the phenological process. Our results could provide a reference for more accurate estimation of spring organ carbon distribution pattern of regional typical tree species, and also a theoretical basis for formulating scientific and reasonable forest management strategy.
Influence of forest age, tree size, and climate factors on biomass and carbon storage allocation in Chinese fir forests

Abstract:Biomass and carbon allocation among plant organs are influenced by the individual tree's development and climate conditions. Chinese fir forests play an important role in the carbon cycle and climate change mitigation in China. Understanding how forest age, tree size, and climate factors affect biomass and carbon allocation in Chinese fir forests is crucial to fully utilize the carbon sequestration potential. We analyzed the response of Chinese fir biomass allocation fractions (BAFs) and carbon stock allocation fractions (CAFs) to forest age, tree size, and climate factors, utilizing field survey data on biomass of 93 trees in Fujian, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Jiangxi provinces and carbon storage of 40 trees in Fujian, Sichuan, and Guangxi provinces in China. Our results showed that BAFs depend on individual development. In young and middle-aged forests, BAFs were unaffected by diameter at breast height (DBH), whereas branch and root biomass fractions displayed a significant positive correlation with DBH, and stem biomass fraction displayed a negative correlation with DBH in mature forests. Carbon concentration exhibited substantial variation among distinct components and regions. Overall, the carbon concentration of each organ ranked as Guangxi > Sichuan > Fujian. BAFs of dominant trees are almost independent of climatic factors, while suppressed trees will alter their strategies for biomass allocation in response to climate change. Stem biomass fraction exhibited a significant positive correlation with maximum growing season temperature, mean summer temperature, and maximum summer temperature, whereas leaf biomass fraction showed the opposite trend. Under future climate warming, Chinese fir will allocate more biomass to the stem, at the expense of leaf biomass. These findings support the idea that biomass allocation patterns serve as adaptive patterns to address fluctuations in internal and external conditions. The interaction between climate factors and tree size shows promise for predicting trends in forest biomass and carbon accumulation in the context of future climate change.
