Abstract:CDF has obtained new results on quarkonium production in p\bar{p} collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV. We report on measurements of Upsilon meson production, Upsilon(1S) production from Chi_b feeddown, and the production polarization of Upsilon(1S), J/Psi and Psi(2S) mesons.

Abstract:We present a complete evaluation for J/psi(psi`) prompt production at the Tevatron and LHC at next-to-leading order in nonrelativistic QCD, including color-singlet, color-octet, and higher charmonia feeddown contributions. The short-distance coefficients of P-3(J)[8] at next-to-leading order are found to be larger than leading order by more than an order of magnitude but with a minus sign at high transverse momentum p(T). Two new linear combinations of color-octet matrix elements are obtained from the CDF data, and used to predict J/psi production at the LHC, which agrees with the CMS data. The possibility of S-1(0)[8] dominance and the J/psi polarization puzzle are also discussed.
Recent $J/ψ$ measurements at the PHENIX experiment

Abstract:Quarkonium is an ideal probe to explore the properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Unlike Large Hadron Collider (LHC) measurements, quarkonium production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has different production mechanisms, can access different kinematic phase space and may experience different medium densities/temperatures. The PHENIX experiment has collected a large $J/\psi \to \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ data set within its unique pseudorapidity region of $1.2<|\eta|<2.2$ in $p+p$, $p+A$ and $A+A$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV from 2014 to 2016. Latest results of normalized charged particle multiplicity dependent normalized forward $J/\psi$ yields and normalized forward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio in 200 GeV $p+p$ collisions as well as forward $J/\psi$ azimuthal anisotropy in 200 GeV Au+Au collisions will be shown. Comparison with other RHIC and LHC measurements and latest theoretical calculations will be discussed. These PHENIX results provide their unique contributions in improving the understanding of the multi-parton interaction contribution to charmonium production and the recombination/coalescence contribution to charmonium formation within Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) at RHIC energies.

Abstract:With nonrelativistic QCD factorization, we present the first complete next-to-leading order study on the polarization of prompt J/psi hadroproduction by including feeddown from chi(c)(P-3(J)1, S-3(1)8) and psi (2s) which turn out to be very important parts. By using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements obtained from a combined fit of the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC for J/psi, psi (2s) and chi(c), the prompt J/psi polarization predictions are presented, and the results are in agreement with the CDF run I data (except two points), but in conflict with the CDF run II data, while they are close to the ALICE data (inclusive J/psi). Recent results on anomalous J/psi suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 AGeV/c

Abstract:We report our latest results on charmonium suppression as measured at the CERN-SPS in Pb-Pb interactions at an incident beam momentum of 158 GeV/c per nucleon. Preliminary results obtained from the most recent sample of data collected in year 2000 under improved experimental conditions are compared with published results. For the most peripheral Pb-Pb collisions, J/psi suppression agrees with the normal absorption measured from interactions of lighter nuclei while a steady increasing abnormal supression is observed with increasing centrality.

Abstract:The PHENIX collaboration efforts towards constraining and understanding quarkonia production mechanisms are outlined. J/psi measurements and feed-down sources studies in p-p collisions at 200 GeV, together with their possible indications on the hadro-production mechanisms, are discussed. J/psi photo-production in ultra-peripheral collisions at 200 GeV is also examined. Finally, a glimpse of the first bottomonia results in minimum bias Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV and their implications are presented.

Abstract:Open heavy flavour and J/psi production are powerful tools to test pQCD calculations in proton-proton collisions in the new LHC energy regime. In addition, they provide the necessary reference for the ALICE heavy-ion program. The ALICE experiment at the LHC collected proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 and 2.76 TeV in 2010 and 2011. We report here the latest results of open heavy flavour and J/psi production at both mid- and forward-rapidity via their various hadronic and leptonic decay channels. These include, among other topics, the first LHC result on J/psi polarization, multiplicity dependence of the J/psi production, D-meson measurement down to low transverse momentum and J/psi production from B-hadron decays. Comparisons with different theoretical models will be discussed as well.

Abstract:Charmonium states are considered important signatures of the strongly interacting medium created in heavy-ion collisions. In the ALICE experiment, these probes can be investigated in the mu^+mu^- decay channel, in the forward rapidity region (2.5<y<4) down to zero transverse momentum. Results on charmonia production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV are presented. The centrality and transverse momentum dependence of the inclusive J/Psi nuclear modification factor are shown and compared with theoretical models. Finally, first ALICE results on the Psi(2S) production in Pb-Pb collisions are also discussed.

Abstract:We report the recent measurements of the inclusive J/{\psi} production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV, in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/{\psi} mesons are detected down to pT = 0 GeV/c via their di-muon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) and via their di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9). A special emphasis is put on the nuclear modification factor which is compared to the predictions of current J/{\psi} production models.

Recent results on J/$ψ$ photoproduction in ultra-peripheral collisions with ALICE

Abstract:Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPC) are events characterised by large impact parameters between the two projectiles, larger than the sum of their radii. In UPCs, the protons and ions accelerated by the LHC do not interact via the strong interaction and can be regarded as sources of quasireal photons. Photoproduction of vector mesons (e.g. J/$\psi$ and $\psi$') in UPC is quite interesting since it is sensitive to the low-$x$ gluon density. Owing to the statistics available from Run 2 data, the ALICE Collaboration has been able to carry out differential measurements, such as the measurement of the rapidity-differential cross section of coherent J/$\psi$ production in Pb--Pb UPCs and the $t$-dependence of coherent and incoherent J/$\psi$, which are sensitive to the average of the spatial distribution of the gluons and its variance, respectively. In addition, the ALICE Collaboration has measured the energy dependence of the photonuclear cross section with a few different strategies, such as by measuring the rapidity-differential cross section of coherent J/$\psi$ production in different impact parameter ranges i.e. in ultra-peripheral and peripheral collisions, and in neutron emission classes. The latter two provide promising tools for the resolution of the ambiguity in Bjorken-$x$ which arises in symmetric A--A UPCs.

Production of $\varUpsilon(\textrm{nS})$ mesons in Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at 5.02 TeV

Abstract:A measurement of the production of vector bottomonium states, $\varUpsilon(\textrm{1S})$, $\varUpsilon(\textrm{2S})$, and $\varUpsilon(\textrm{3S})$, in Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV is presented. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 1.38~$\textrm{nb}^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb data collected in 2018, 0.44 $\textrm{nb}^{-1}$ of Pb+Pb data collected in 2015, and 0.26 $\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ data collected in 2017 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are performed in the dimuon decay channel for transverse momentum $p_\textrm{T}^{\mu\mu} < 30$~ GeV, absolute rapidity $|y^{\mu\mu}|<1.5$, and Pb+Pb event centrality 0-80%. The production rates of the three bottomonium states in Pb+Pb collisions are compared with those in $pp$ collisions to extract the nuclear modification factors as functions of event centrality, $p_\textrm{T}^{\mu\mu}$, and $|y^{\mu\mu}|$. In addition, the suppression of the excited states relative to the ground state is studied. The results are compared with theoretical model calculations.

Photoproduction of J/$ψ$ and dileptons in Pb-Pb collisions with nuclear overlap

Abstract:Photon-photon reactions and the production of J/$\psi$ meson through photonuclear reactions have been extensively studied in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, in which the impact parameter is larger than twice the nuclear radius. In recent years, coherently photoproduced J/$\psi$ and dilepton production via photon-photon interactions have also been observed in nucleus-nucleus (A-A) collisions with nuclear overlap. The former can help to constrain the nuclear gluon distributions at low Bjorken-$x$ and high energy, while the latter could be used to further map the electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, these measurements can shed light on the theory behind photon-induced reactions in A-A collisions with nuclear overlap, including possible interactions of the measured probes with the formed and fast expanding quark-gluon plasma. Since the produced quarkonium is expected to keep the polarization of the incoming photon due to $s$-channel helicity conservation, the photoproduction origin of the J/$\psi$ yield excess at very low transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, can be confirmed by the measurement of the J/$\psi$ polarization. The ALICE detector can perform quarkonium production measurements at both mid ($|y|<0.9$) and forward ($2.5<y<4$) rapidities down to $p_{\rm T} = 0$. In the following, the new ALICE measurements of the J/$\psi$ $y$-differential cross section and the first polarization results of coherently photoproduced J/$\psi$ via the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV are reported. Additionally, the measurement of an excess with respect to expectations from hadronic production in the dielectron yield, at low mass and $p_{\rm T}$, at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02~TeV, is presented. The results are compared with available theoretical models.

Abstract:The associated production of prompt $J/\psi$ and $\mathit{\mathit{\Upsilon}}$ mesons in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\mathrm{TeV}$ is studied using LHCb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $4\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The measurement is performed for $J/\psi$ ($\mathit{\Upsilon}$) mesons with a transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}<10\,(30)\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ in the rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt $J/\psi$ and $\mathit{\Upsilon}(1S)$ mesons is measured to be $133 \pm 22 \pm 7 \pm 3 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $7.9\,\sigma$, and that of prompt $J/\psi$ and $\mathit{\Upsilon}(2S)$ mesons to be $76\pm 21 \pm 4 \pm 7 \, \mathrm{pb}$, with a significance of $4.9\,\sigma$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the first observation of the associated production of $J/\psi$ and $\mathit{\Upsilon}(1S)$ in proton-proton collisions. Differential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the $J/\psi$ and $\mathit{\Upsilon}(1S)$ mesons. The effective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt $J/\psi$ and $\mathit{\Upsilon}$ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

Comprehensive Description Of J/Psi Production In Proton-Proton Collisions At Collider Energies

Abstract:We employ a small x color glass condensate (CGC)+ nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) formalism to compute J/psi production at low p(perpendicular to) in proton-proton collisions at collider energies. Very good agreement is obtained for total cross sections, rapidity distributions, and low momentum p(perpendicular to) distributions. Similar agreement is obtained for psi' production. We observe an overlap region in p(perpendicular to) where our results match smoothly to those obtained in a next-to-leading order collinearly factorized NRQCD formalism. The relative contribution of color singlet and color octet contributions can be quantified in the CGC + NRQCD framework, with the former contributing approximately 10% of the total cross section.

Abstract:We report on measurements of the $\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}(1S)$, $\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}(2S)$, and $\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}(3S)$ differential, ${(\\frac{{d}^{2}\\ensuremath{\\sigma}}{d{P}_{t}\\mathrm{dy}})}_{y=0}$, and integrated cross sections in $p\\overline{p}$ collisions at $\\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV using a sample of 16.6 \\ifmmode\\pm\\else\\textpm\\fi{} 0.6 ${\\mathrm{pb}}^{\\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The three resonances were reconstructed through the decay $\\ensuremath{\\Upsilon}\\ensuremath{\\rightarrow}{\\ensuremath{\\mu}}^{+}{\\ensuremath{\\mu}}^{\\ensuremath{-}}$. Comparison is made to a leading order QCD prediction.

Abstract:In this work, we present more detail of the calculation on the NLO QCD corrections to polarization of direct J/psi production via color singlet at Tevatron and LHC, as well as the results for Upsilon for the first time. Our results show that the J/psi polarization status drastically changes from transverse polarization dominant at LO into longitudinal polarization dominant in the whole range of the transverse momentum $p_t$ of J/psi when the NLO corrections are counted. For Upsilon production, the p_t distribution of the polarization status behaves almost the same as that for J/psi except that the NLO result is transverse polarization at small p_t range. Although the theoretical evaluation predicts a larger longitudinal polarization than the measured value at Tevatron, it may provide a solution towards the previous large discrepancy for J/psi and Upsilon polarization between theoretical predication and experimental measurement, and suggests that the next important step is to calculate the NLO corrections to hadronproduction of color octet state J/psi^(8) and Upsilon^(8). Our calculations are performed in two ways, namely we do and do not analytically sum over the polarizations, and then check them with each other.

Abstract:With nonrelativistic QCD factorization, we present a full next-to-leading order computation of the polarization observable for J/psi production at hadron colliders including all important Fock states, i.e., S-3(1)[1,8], S-1(0)[8], and P-3(J)[8]. We find the P-3(J)[8] channel contributes a positive longitudinal component and a negative transverse component, so the J/psi polarization puzzle may be understood as the transverse components canceling between the S-3(1)[8] and P-3(J)[8] channels, which results in mainly the unpolarized (even slightly longitudinally polarized) J/psi. This may give a possible solution to the long-standing J/psi polarization puzzle. Predictions for J/psi polarization at the LHC are also presented.

Abstract:The angular distributions of Upsilon(1S) to mu+ mu- decays are analyzed using a sample of Upsilon(1S) mesons in 2.9 fb^{-1} of data collected at sqrt{s} = 1.96TeV. The results of the one-dimensional angular analysis suggest that Upsilon(1S) may be longitudinal polarized at high transverse momentum. This observation is largely inconsistent with NRQCD prediction that predicts transverse polarization at high p_T.

Abstract:Cold nuclear matter effects on J/psi production in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are evaluated taking into account the specific J/psi production kinematics at the partonic level, the shadowing of the initial parton distributions and the absorption in the nuclear matter. We consider two different parton processes for the c-cbar pair production: one with collinear gluons and a recoiling gluon in the final state and the other with initial gluons carrying intrinsic transverse momentum. Our results are compared to RHIC observables. The smaller values of the nuclear modification factor R_AA in the forward rapidity region (with respect to the mid rapidity region) are partially explained, therefore potentially reducing the need for recombination effects.
