Abstract:Ni-Ni(OH)2 composite was synthesized by a novel and facile photodeposition strategy and used as the cocatalyst of CdS for solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Under visible light, the hydrogen evolution rate of Ni-Ni(OH)2/CdS was 428 mmol g- 1h- 1 and remained essentially unchanged after 24 h in Na2S/Na2SO3 aqueous solution. In particular, the Ni-Ni(OH)2/CdS also displayed excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity (13.3 mmol g- 1h- 1) in 40 vol% glycerol. A set of spectroscopy and electrochemical characterizations were performed to explore the photoinduced interfacial charge dynamics. Ni and Ni(OH)2 were synergistic cocatalysts for improving charge utilization and photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Due to inefficient charge separation and low surface catalytic conversion efficiencies, cocatalysts are required for achieving photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Being a noble-metal-free cocatalyst, metallic 1T-WS2 with excellent conductivity can function for this reaction. Herein, 1T-WS2/Zn0.5Cd0.5S is constructed via a simple and feasible grinding approach. The composite containing 7.5 % 1T-WS2 in 1T-WS2/Zn0.5Cd0.5S achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 61.65 mmol g(-1) h(-1) and an external quantum efficiency of 8.04 % at 420 nm, which is 37 times that of bare Zn0.5Cd0.5S (1.67 mmol g(-1) h(-1)). The electrical conductivity of metallic 1T-WS2 reduces the transfer impedance at the interface and thus accelerates the non-radiative energy transfer and electron transport rate. The different Fermi levels of 1T-WS2 and Zn0.5Cd0.5S form a Schottky junction, which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Zn0.5Cd0.5S to 1T-WS2. More importantly, the close interface contact between 1T-WS2 and Zn0.5Cd0.5S results in strong electron interactions, which is conducive to the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. This work will further expand the application of 1T-WS2 in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution process.
Enhancement of catalytic hydrogen evolution by NiS modification of ZnCo2O4 with cubic morphology

Abstract:It was the constant pursuit of researchers to explore catalysts with higher catalytic activity, and the use of co-catalysts to modify the performance of photocatalytic materials had a significant effect on charge separation. In this paper, the non-precious metal NiS-modified ZnCo2O4 composite catalytic material prepared by hydrothermal method had high-efficiency catalytic performance. When the weight ratio of NiS to ZnCo2O4 was 12%, the optimal catalytic activity is 3.57 mmol g−1 h−1, which was more than twice that of ZnCo2O4. The presence of NiS not only improved the specific surface area of the catalyst and its ability to respond to light, but the close interface formed by the combination of the two monomer phases accelerated the transfer and the utilization of the photocharge on ZnCo2O4 to NiS, thereby promoting the separation of electron holes and improving the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. According to the research results, the mechanism of hydrogen production in the photocatalytic system was revealed. In this paper, NiS was used to modify the bimetallic oxide with cubic appearance, which provided a new strategy for the development of new photocatalysts.

Abstract:Introducing co-catalyst and constructing heterostructure are two of the most promising strategies in improving the photocatalytic H2 evolution performance of semiconductors. However, it has always been a great challenge to develop a facile and low-cost system to facilitate the highly efficient synergistic effect between co-catalyst and heterostructure. Herein, co-catalyst NiS decorated ZnS/CdS heterostructure (CdS/ZnS-NiS) has been fabricated by using a facile one-pot hydrothermal procedure for the photocatalytic H2 evolution from water splitting. As a result, CdS, ZnS and NiS contact closely with each other at nano scale to assemble into fluffy porous nanocomposite, the optimized CdS/ZnS-NiS exhibits a high hydrogen evolution rate of 60.44 mmol·h−1g−1 without the addition of extra noble metal co-catalyst, which is about 22.3 times higher than that of pure CdS and much higher than that of 1% wt Pt decorated CdS/ZnS (52.36 mmol·h−1g−1). One-pot fabrication process allows the formation of intimate contacted interface between different components, contributing to the sufficient exposure of active reaction sites. Moreover, noble-metal-free co-catalyst NiS distributes uniformly in both surface and inner region of porous nanocomposite. The synergistic effect between the intimately contacted heterostructure and co-catalyst boosts the separation and utilization of photogenerated charge carriers, resulting in a dramatically enhanced H2 evolution ability. This work provides a facile pathway to uniformly introduce noble-metal-free co-catalyst in heterostructure and gives out a paradigm in constructing high active solar energy conversion system.

Abstract:In this work, a novel photocatalyst of ZnIn2S4/Ni(dmgH)2 was designed by a simple chemical precipitation method and used to enhance hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. Along with vigorous discharges of hydrogen bubbles, an optimal rate of 36.3 mmol/g/h was reached under UV-Vis light for hydrogen evolution, nearly 4.9 times of the one from pure ZnIn2S4. The heterojunction exhibits steady hydrogen evolution capability and owns a high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 20.45% under the monochromatic light at 420 nm. By coupling ZnIn2S4 with Ni(dmgH)2, an extraordinary photochromic phenomenon was detected and attributed to the active Ni-S component in situ formed between the nickel and sulfur composites under light irradiation. The emerging sulfide benefits light absorption of the system and separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. Besides providing a promising photocatalyst for visible light hydrogen production, the present work is hoped to inspire new trends of catalytic medium designs and investigations.

Abstract:Increasing the active site of redox reactions on the surface of photocatalysts and accelerating the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron‐hole pairs are effective methods to improve the hydrogen evolution of composite photocatalysts. Non‐precious metal Ni photo‐deposition is anchored in situ on the ZnIn2S4 surface to generate the cocatalyst Ni(OH)2, which improves the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of the composite sample. Under visible light irradiation, the ZnIn2S4 semiconductor stimulates photon‐generated carriers. Ni2+ acts as the defect center of photogenerated electron‐hole pairs to promote the separation of carriers. It serves as the capture site of light‐generated holes to reduce the carrier recombination rate so that the light‐generated electrons on the ZnIn2S4 surface promote H+ reduction in H2. Ni(OH)2 provides the active site for oxidation reaction on the surface of semiconductor materials, allowing the carrier to be consumed faster and improving the photocatalytic stability of semiconductor materials. The addition of 2 wt% Ni2+ resulted in a hydrogen evolution rate of 10 066 μmol·g−1 ·h−1 for ZnIn2S4/Ni(OH)2, which was 2.5 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. This paper presents a reference case for enhancing the stability of sulfide to promote its photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Developing non-noble metal photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is crucial for exploiting renewable energy. In this study, a photocatalyst of Ni2P/CdS nanorods consisting of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanorods (NRs) decorated with Ni2P nanoparticles (NPs) was fabricated using an in-situ solvothermal method with red phosphor (P) as the P source. Ni2P NPs were tightly anchored on the surface of CdS NRs to form a core-shell structure with a well-defined heterointerface, aiming to achieve a highly efficient photocatalytic H2 generation. The as-synthesized 2%Ni2P/CdS NRs photocatalyst exhibited the significantly improved photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 260.2 μmol∙h−1, more than 20 folds higher than that of bare CdS NRs. Moreover, the as-synthesized 2%Ni2P/CdS NRs photocatalyst demonstrated an excellent stability, even better than that of Pt/CdS NRs. The photocatalytic performance enhancement was ascribed to the core-shell structure with the interfacial Schottky junction between Ni2P NPs and CdS NRs and the accompanying fast and effective photogenerated charge carriers’ separation and transfer. This work provides a new strategy for designing non-noble metal photocatalysts to replace the noble catalysts for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is one of the strategies to meet energy demand. Catalysts and cocatalysts used to produce H2 are usually made of precious metals, which limits its further development. It is necessary to find efficient and low-cost non-noble metal catalysts and cocatalysts. Mn0.25Cd0.75S was synthesized by hydrothermal method and composite with amorphous nickel boride nanomaterial. Hydrogen production over NiB/Mn0.25Cd0.75S composites with different ratios under visible light was studied. The results showed that the photocatalytic effect of 10% NiB was the best, which was 13.06 mmol/g/h, 3.7 times that of pure Mn0.25Cd0.75S. The enhancement mechanism is that Mn0.25Cd0.75S composite has a close contact interface with NiB, which is favorable for the separation of photocarriers and provides more catalytic active centers. The composite material has good visible light absorption ability and efficient charge separation ability. The results show that transition metal borides can be used as a high efficient cocatalyst, which can significantly improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor materials, providing a new idea for replacing noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:Herein, a Z‐scheme heterojunction is constructed based on graphdiyne and loaded with CoNiSx cocatalyst. The role of the Z‐scheme heterojunction and the presence of the cocatalyst suppress the photogenerated carrier recombination, which leads to an increase in the number of photogenerated electrons and holes participating in the redox reaction, ultimately achieving excellent photocatalytic performance. Initially, CoNiSx is synthesized on the graphdiyne (GDY) surface through a precipitation method, followed by the straightforward physical stirring approach to attach CoNiSx/GDY to the maple leaf CdS. This synthesis method significantly mitigates the accumulation of CoNiSx/GDY and concurrently augments the count of sites that are active for generating hydrogen. This three‐phase composite demonstrates exceptional performance in the area of photocatalytic hydrogen production, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 15.37 mmol·h−1 g−1. The employment of various characterization methodologies and density functional theory calculations have demonstrated the formation of a Z‐scheme heterojunction forms between GDY and CdS. This discovery indicates that the combination of GDY and CdS markedly improves the photogenerated carrier separation capability of the composite catalyst. The cocatalyst CoNiSx loaded on GDY effectively accelerates the electron transfer from the conduction band of GDY, thereby reducing the photogenerated carrier complexation of GDY. This phenomenon results in an increased quantity of photogenerated electron holes engaged in the redox reaction, ultimately achieving exceptional photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:The exploration for a suitable cocatalyst to substitute noble metals is crucial to establishing an efficient photocatalytic system. In this study, a facile solution‐based approach is employed to integrate sheet‐like NiSe2 nanostructure as a cocatalyst onto ultrafine ZnCdS nanoparticles, with the objective of enhancing photocatalytic H2 production. Notably, the optimized 3% NiSe2/ZnCdS photocatalyst exhibits a remarkable enhancement in photocatalytic H2 evolution rate, achieving 7779 μmol g−1 h−1, representing an 8.3‐fold increase compared to ZnCdS. Furthermore, the NiSe2/ZnCdS demonstrate exceptional stability during cycling tests. The impressive photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the presence of NiSe2 nanosheets, which facilitate photoinduced electron transfer and offer active sites for the H2 evolution reaction. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidates a plausible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic performance. This study provides valuable insights into the development of noble‐metal‐free ZnCdS‐based photocatalysts, a promising candidate for efficient solar‐to‐H2 energy conversion due to their growing prominence in the field.

Abstract:An efficient Ni2P–CdS photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution was synthesized by phosphorizing β-Ni(OH)2 nanosheet with exposed (001) facets on CdS nanorods. The obtained Ni2P–CdS composite displays an outstanding and stable photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate of 68.47 mmol g−1 h−1 in 10 vol% lactic acid under visible light irradiation, more than 17 times higher than that for pure CdS nanorods. The transient photocurrent response, EIS measurement, Mott-Schottky plots, acidic LSV measurement, and PL spectra have proved that Ni2P loading can significantly improve the separation of photo-excited electron-hole pairs in CdS nanorods and enhance the hydrogen evolution capability for CdS. These improvements are achieved by features of Ni2P such as the high capability of trapping photo-generated electrons from CdS, lifting the total Fermi level and lowering the hydrogen evolution overpotential of the composite. The results show that β-Ni(OH)2 precursor with a high exposure degree of (001) facet is contributed to the epitaxial formation of (001)-facet-exposed Ni2P co-catalyst on CdS nanorods, resulting in that the Fermi level and the hydrogen evolution overpotential of the composite can be further lifted and lowered. This study has provided a novel precursor-derived route to fabricate high-performance co-catalysts with highly exposed active facets on CdS nanorods for effective photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:ZnS−NiS2/g-C3N4 ternary composites were synthesized via a thermal polymerization and post co-deposition−sulfidation method. The decoration of g-C3N4 layers with ZnS−NiS2 nanoparticles extended visible light absorption and promoted the separation and transfer of photo-generated charge carriers. The photocatalytic performance of the ZnS−NiS2/g-C3N4 composites was evaluated by the visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution. Briefly, compared to g-C3N4, ZnS/g-C3N4, and NiS2/g-C3N4, the hydrogen evolution rate on ZnS−NiS2/CN(0.4) was separately increased by 31, 31, and 1 times, highlighting the synergistic effect of ZnS and NiS2. The interface between ZnS and g-C3N4 modified the charge separation and transfer process. Meanwhile, NiS2 with a Pt-like behavior acted as an electron acceptor to facilitate transfer photoelectrons and to provide active sites for proton reduction. This work will offer new insight into improving g-C3N4-based photocatalysts with mixed metal sulfides for efficient hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Ni-based precious-metal-free cocatalysts have attracted copious attention due to their nature-friendly and cost-effectiveness compared with platinum (Pt) during photocatalytic H2 evolution. However, the typical morphologies and structures of Ni-based cocatalysts (e.g., Ni) focus on the zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles. Herein, we demonstrate a two-dimensional (2D) nickel nanosheets cocatalyst decorated Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanocrystals that pays attention to visible-light-motivated photocatalytic H2 generation. By rationally introducing Ni nanosheets to modify Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles, a series of unique 2D/0D Ni/Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanohybrids with different Ni contents were synthesized. The optimized Ni-5%/Zn0.5Cd0.5S composite possesses a high H2 production rate of 5930μmolh−1 g−1 upon visible-light (λ > 420 nm) illumination, which was about 33.7 and 15.4-fold more elevated than those of Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanocrystals, and Pt/Zn0.5Cd0.5S, respectively. Combining photoelectrochemical (PEC) and photoluminescence (PL) studies, the conspicuous enhancement in photocatalytic H2 generation was stemmed from the Ni nanosheets cocatalyst act as an electron-transfer layer to extract photoexcited electrons from Zn0.5Cd0.5S and offer enormous reaction sites for H2 production. This work verifies Ni nanosheets' capability for photocatalytic water splitting. Noble-Metal-Free Ultrathin CdS–NiFeS 2D–2D Heterojunction Nanosheets for Significantly Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:To effectively restrain the charge recombination of bulk CdS, which dominantly limits the photocatalytic activity, ultrathin CdS–NiFeS two-dimensional (2D)–2D heterojunctions are well designed with the creation of tight interfaces, where NiFeS nanosheets derived from layered double hydroxides possess tunable work functions and hydrogen evolution overpotentials. The optimized CdS–2% NiFe0.1S photocatalyst presents an excellent hydrogen generation activity of 626.7 μmol/h (10 mg catalysts, equivalent to 62.67 mmol/g/h), which is fairly high among noble-metal-free CdS-based catalysts. The greatly enhanced catalytic performance can be ascribed to the following synergetic effects. This ultrathin 2D–2D heterostructure formed between CdS and NiFeS establishes sufficient contact interfaces, shortens the charge transport distance, and efficiently accelerates the electron transfer from CdS to NiFeS, which possesses a large work function. Moreover, the bimetallic NiFeS cocatalyst evidently decreases the reaction barrier, provides abundant active sites, and then facilitates H2 generation. This research may offer new inspirations to develop 2D nanomaterials for outstanding photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Developing noble-metal-free dual-metal single-atom catalysts with rich active accessible sites and excellent catalytic activity is very meaningful and challenging, especially for photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction, which can significantly reduce the cost of photocatalytic technology application while reducing the use of noble metals. Herein, a novel noble-metal-free dual CuNi single-atom modified ZnIn2S4 (CuNiSA-ZIS) photocatalyst with high hydrogen production performance were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method. The ZnIn2S4 with a spherical nanoflower structure is composed of ultrathin nanosheets, and ACHDDAF-STEM results shows that CuNi bimetallic particles are uniformly distributed on the surface of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets and exhibit atomic level dispersion, forming dual-metal single-atom structure. The optimized 1 wt% CuNiSA-ZIS photocatalyst with the Cu/Ni ratio of 1:1 shows the optimum H2 evolution performance with a rate of up to 7844.7 μmol·g −1·h −1 using triethanolamine as a sacrificial reagent, which is significantly improved compared to pristine ZIS, Cu-ZIS and Ni-ZIS samples under simulated sunlight. Electrochemical and spectroscopic characterization results demonstrated that the improved photocatalytic activity of CuNiSA-ZIS was mainly due to the addition of the dual CuNi single atoms with a synergistic effect served as a co-catalyst for ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts, providing efficient active sites for hydrogen evolution while preventing the fast recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. This study provides a valuable source of ideas for the design of effective noble-metal-free dual-metal single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:In photocatalysis, maximizing light absorption and utilizing light-stimulated electrons is of paramount importance. In this study, Ni-decorated CdxZn1−xS twinned crystals were synthesized via solvothermal method with Ni loadings ranging from 0.5 to 5 wt%. The Ni nanoparticles introduced the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) effect, broadening photon absorption and extending the photo-response into the visible light range. Notably, 1 wt % Ni-decorated Cd0.5Zn0.5S exhibited remarkable H2 evolution rate of 1497 μmol(h.gcat)−1. This enhancement is attributed to the SPR effect, which enhances light absorption and photogenerated electron generation, as well as efficient electron transfer facilitated by Ni's lower Fermi level. These findings emphasize the crucial role of optimal Ni loading and the SPR effect in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:The application of non-noble metal catalysts to photocatalytic hydrogen production from water holds high practical application value. In this study, photocatalysts were obtained by hydrothermal and photodeposition methods. The optimal photocatalytic hydrogen production from water decomposition was 2641 μmol·g-1·h-1. The results showed that compared with traditional composites, the ZnCdS(Two-Step)/Ni photocatalyst synthesized with prussian blue analogue (PBA) as the precursor has better photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution. Moreover, the introduction of Ni is feasible strategies to modulate the performance of photocatalysts, providing a reference for the construction of materials with excellent photocatalytic properties.
