Abstract:Martin-Löf's identity types provide a generic (albeit opaque) notion of identification or "equality" between any two elements of the same type, embodied in a canonical reflexive graph structure $(=_A, \mathbf{refl})$ on any type $A$. The miracle of Voevodsky's univalence principle is that it ensures, for essentially any naturally occurring structure in mathematics, that this the resultant notion of identification is equivalent to the type of isomorphisms in the category of such structures. Characterisations of this kind are not automatic and must be established one-by-one; to this end, several authors have employed reflexive graphs and displayed reflexive graphs to organise the characterisation of identity types.

External univalence for second-order generalized algebraic theories

Abstract:Voevodsky's univalence axiom is often motivated as a realization of the equivalence principle; the idea that equivalent mathematical structures satisfy the same properties. Indeed, in Homotopy Type Theory, properties and structures can be transported over type equivalences. However, we may wish to explain the equivalence principle without relying on the univalence axiom. For example, all type formers preserve equivalences in most type theories; thus it should be possible to transport structures over type equivalences even in non-univalent type theories. We define external univalence, a property of type theories (and more general second-order generalized algebraic theories) that captures the preservation of equivalences (or other homotopy relations). This property is defined syntactically, as the existence of identity types on the (syntactically defined) coclassifying (Sigma,Pi_rep)-CwF (also called generic model or walking model) of the theory. Semantically, it corresponds to the existence of some left semi-model structure on the category of models of the theory. We give syntactic conditions that can be used to check that a theory satisfies external univalence. We prove external univalence for some theories, such as the first-order generalized algebraic theory of categories, and dependent type theory with any standard choice of type formers and axioms, including identity types, Sigma-types, Pi-types, universes à la Tarski, the univalence axiom, the Uniqueness of Identity Proofs axiom, etc.

Abstract:The persistent challenge of formulating ontic structuralism in a rigorous manner, which prioritizes structures over the entities they contain, calls for a transformation of traditional logical frameworks. I argue that Univalent Foundations (UF), which feature the axiom that all isomorphic structures are identical, offer such a foundation and are more attractive than other proposed structuralist frameworks. Furthermore, I delve into the significance in the case of the hole argument and, very briefly, the nature of symmetries.

Abstract:In Feferman's work, explicit mathematics and theories of generalized inductive definitions play a central role. One objective of this article is to describe the connections with Martin-Lof type theory and constructive Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory. Proof theory has contributed to a deeper grasp of the relationship between different frameworks for constructive mathematics. Some of the reductions are known only through ordinal-theoretic characterizations. The paper also addresses the strength of Voevodsky's univalence axiom. A further goal is to investigate the strength of intuitionistic theories of generalized inductive definitions in the framework of intuitionistic explicit mathematics that lie beyond the reach of Martin-Lof type theory.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel connection between homotopical algebra and mathematical logic. It is shown that a form of intensional type theory is valid in any Quillen model category, generalizing the Hofmann-Streicher groupoid model of Martin-Loef type theory.

Abstract:We investigate two constructive approaches to defining quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes (qcqs-schemes), namely qcqs-schemes as locally ringed lattices and as functors from rings to sets. We work in Homotopy Type Theory and Univalent Foundations, but reason informally. The main result is a constructive and univalent proof that the two definitions coincide, giving an equivalence between the respective categories of qcqs-schemes.

Abstract:This paper presents a type theory in which it is possible to directly manipulate $n$-dimensional cubes (points, lines, squares, cubes, etc.) based on an interpretation of dependent type theory in a cubical set model. This enables new ways to reason about identity types, for instance, function extensionality is directly provable in the system. Further, Voevodsky's univalence axiom is provable in this system. We also explain an extension with some higher inductive types like the circle and propositional truncation. Finally we provide semantics for this cubical type theory in a constructive meta-theory.

Abstract:I argue that beliefs about the identity or distinctness of objects are necessary to explain some normal inferential transitions between thoughts in humans. Worries about vicious regress are not powerful enough to dismantle such an argument. As an upshot, the idea that thinkers "trade on" identity without any corresponding belief remains somewhat mysterious.

Abstract:Homotopy type theory is a new branch of mathematics, based on a recently discovered connection between homotopy theory and type theory, which brings new ideas into the very foundation of mathematics. On the one hand, Voevodsky's subtle and beautiful "univalence axiom" implies that isomorphic structures can be identified. On the other hand, "higher inductive types" provide direct, logical descriptions of some of the basic spaces and constructions of homotopy theory. Both are impossible to capture directly in classical set-theoretic foundations, but when combined in homotopy type theory, they permit an entirely new kind of "logic of homotopy types". This suggests a new conception of foundations of mathematics, with intrinsic homotopical content, an "invariant" conception of the objects of mathematics -- and convenient machine implementations, which can serve as a practical aid to the working mathematician. This book is intended as a first systematic exposition of the basics of the resulting "Univalent Foundations" program, and a collection of examples of this new style of reasoning -- but without requiring the reader to know or learn any formal logic, or to use any computer proof assistant.

Abstract:In standard first order predicate logic with identity it is usually taken that $a=a$ is a theorem for any term $a$. It is easily shown that this enables the apparent proof of a theorem stating the existence of any entity whatsoever. This embarrassing result is a motivation for the construction of free logics, but in most orthodox treatments of first order logic with identity it is generally dealt with by being ignored. We investigate the possibility that this problem can be obviated by dropping the rule that $a=a$ is a theorem and requiring instead that it be treated as a global but in principle defeasible assumption about the objects in the domain of discourse. We propose that any logic in which this is done be called "open." We review some motivations in physics, philosophy, and literature for questioning the classical notion of self-identity, and we show that Carnap's "null object" has a natural role to play in any system of predicate logic where self-identity can come into question.

Abstract:In this paper we construct new categorical models for the identity types of Martin-Löf type theory, in the categories Top of topological spaces and SSet of simplicial sets. We do so building on earlier work of Awodey and Warren, which has suggested that a suitable environment for the interpretation of identity types should be a category equipped with a weak factorisation system in the sense of Bousfield--Quillen. It turns out that this is not quite enough for a sound model, due to some subtle coherence issues concerned with stability under substitution; and so our first task is to introduce a slightly richer structure---which we call a homotopy-theoretic model of identity types---and to prove that this is sufficient for a sound interpretation. Now, although both Top and SSet are categories endowed with a weak factorisation system---and indeed, an entire Quillen model structure---exhibiting the additional structure required for a homotopy-theoretic model is quite hard to do. However, the categories we are interested in share a number of common features, and abstracting away from these leads us to introduce the notion of a path object category. This is a relatively simple axiomatic framework, which is nonetheless sufficiently strong to allow the construction of homotopy-theoretic models. Now by exhibiting suitable path object structures on Top and SSet, we endow those categories with the structure of a homotopy-theoretic model: and in this way, obtain the desired topological and simplicial models of identity types.

Abstract:Homotopy type theory (HoTT) can be seen as a generalisation of structural set theory, in the sense that 0-types represent structural sets within the more general notion of types. For material set theory, we also have concrete models as 0-types in HoTT, but this does not currently have any generalisation to higher types. The aim of this paper is to give such a generalisation of material set theory to higher type levels within homotopy type theory. This is achieved by generalising the construction of the type of iterative sets. At level 1, this gives a connection between groupoids and multisets. More specifically, we define the notion of an $\in$-structure as a type with an extensional binary type family and generalise the axioms of constructive set theory to higher type levels. Once an $\in$-structure is given, its elements can be seen as representing types in the ambient type theory. The theory has an alternative, coalgebraic formulation, in terms of coalgebras for a certain hierarchy of functors, $P^n$, which generalises the powerset functor from sub-types to covering spaces and $n$-connected maps in general. The coalgebras which furthermore are fixed-points of their respective functors in the hierarchy are shown to model the axioms given in the first part. As concrete examples of models for the theory developed we construct the initial algebras of the $P^n$ functors. In addition to being an example of initial algebras of non-polynomial functors, this construction allows one to start with a univalent universe and get a hierarchy of $\in$-structures which gives a stratified $\in$-structure representation of that universe. These types are moreover $n$-type universes of $n$-types which contain all the usual types an type formers.

Abstract:This piece threads substructurality and modality into a negation that activates the downside of equivalence and identity in a fibrational framework. The piece is a working through of negation and contradiction as type-theoretic/categorial objects, towards an immanent critique of the subtending univalent paradigm. Although this is not the terminus of the piece, i wish to try and delineate the epistemic and intra-mundane problematics intertwined therewith. The piece's terminus is a mode theory of an intuitionistic modal logic that internalises a restriction on the Double Negation Elimination rule.

Extending Homotopy Type Theory with Strict Equality

Abstract:In homotopy type theory (HoTT), all constructions are necessarily stable under homotopy equivalence. This has shortcomings: for example, it is believed that it is impossible to define a type of semi-simplicial types. More generally, it is difficult and often impossible to handle towers of coherences. To address this, we propose a 2-level theory which features both strict and weak equality. This can essentially be represented as two type theories: an "outer" one, containing a strict equality type former, and an "inner" one, which is some version of HoTT. Our type theory is inspired by Voevosky's suggestion of a homotopy type system (HTS) which currently refers to a range of ideas. A core insight of our proposal is that we no not need any form of equality reflection in order to achieve what HTS was suggested for. Instead, having unique identity proofs in the outer type theory is sufficient, and it also has the meta-theoretical advantage of not breaking decidability of type checking. The inner theory can be an easily justifiable extensions of HoTT, allowing the construction of "infinite structures" which are considered impossible in plain HoTT. Alternatively, we can set the inner theory to be exactly the current standard formulation of HoTT, in which case our system can be thought of as a type-theoretic framework for working with "schematic" definitions in HoTT. As demonstrations, we define semi-simplicial types and formalise constructions of Reedy fibrant diagrams.
