Abstract:Vocabulary size has been repeatedly shown to be a good indicator of second language (L2) proficiency. Among the many existing vocabulary tests, the LexTALE test and its equivalents are growing in popularity since they provide a rapid (within 5 minutes) and objective way to assess the L2 proficiency of several languages (English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Italian) in experimental research. In this study, expanding on the standard procedure of test construction in previous LexTALE tests, we develop a vocabulary size test for L2 Portuguese proficiency: LextPT. The selected lexical items fall in the same frequency interval in European and Brazilian Portuguese, so that LextPT accommodates both varieties. A large-scale validation study with 452 L2 learners of Portuguese shows that LextPT is not only a sound and effective instrument to measure L2 lexical knowledge and indicate the proficiency of both European and Brazilian Portuguese, but is also appropriate for learners with different L1 backgrounds (e.g. Chinese, Germanic, Romance, Slavic). The construction of LextPT, apart from joining the effort to provide a standardised assessment of L2 proficiency across languages, shows that the LexTALE tests can be extended to cover different varieties of a language, and that they are applicable to bilinguals with different linguistic experience.

Abstract:The paper aims to present the preliminary results of an ongoing study related to the teaching and learning of writing competencies, through the analysis of writing practices promoted in six Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) textbooks for young adults. There is no systematic research about their adequacy with regard to the latest methodological guidelines or the existing curricula. Therefore, the theoretical and methodological assumptions and the organization of content and learning practices present in the textbooks are, to some extent, unknown. Although research in Didactics highlights their role in the planning of educational action by teachers and their influence on teaching and learning practice in the classroom. Preliminary results show that there are relatively few writing activities in the textbooks, and that they are mostly guided by behaviorist choices (audiolingual and audiovisual methods).

Abstract:Purpose: To carry out the cross-cultural adaptation of the Instrument Profiles of Early Expressive Phonological Skills- Brazilian Portuguese (PEEPS-BP) - Expanded list, performing content validation. Methods: Cross-cultural, quantitative and cross- sectional adaptation study, considering psychometric criteria. A study was carried out on the list of 423 words from the Communicative Development Inventory - MacArthur - Words and Sentences, adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. The method was divided into four steps. The list was judged by expert judges (JE) and non-specialist judges (JNE), considering as a criterion the familiarity of the word for a child aged between 24 and 36 months, and the representativeness of the word with toy/object, contemplating Steps 1 and 2. The child judges analyzed, in a data collection situation, the familiarity and representativeness of the stimulus-words, presented in Step 3. Afterwards, the pilot study - Step 4, was carried out with the selected stimulus-words. In the statistical analysis by expert and non-specialist judges, the Fleiss' Kappa and Gwet Concordance index was used. In the analysis of the responses of the child judges and in the Pilot Study, the analysis was made in relation to the type of response of the child, specifically scoring the spontaneous naming of the toy/object, scoring qualitatively. Results: The result of Steps 1 and 2, and the agreement of the statistical tests for the Familiarity and Representativeness criteria was 45.7% for JE and 76.4% for JNE, and a result of 100% for the agreement of Representativeness. A total of 122 words were analyzed, resulting from previously established criteria, totaling 34 words (exclusion of one word by the researchers), totaling 33 stimulus-words. In Stage 3, of the 33 stimulus-words applied, nine presented spontaneous naming scores below expectations, being retested for Step 4, the Pilot Study. The result of the Pilot Study showed that of the nine retested stimulus-words, four of them still had a score below, being excluded from the study. Therefore, with the application of the Pilot Study, the expanded list of PEEPS-BP resulted in 29 words. Conclusion: The PEEPS-BP - Expanded List showed satisfactory evidence of content validity for the cross-cultural adaptation of the test.

Abstract:Background With the exception of one systematic review of CPT research in Chinese, existing syntheses of Communication Partner Training (CPT) in aphasia have focused on research published in English, leaving a significant gap in knowledge regarding context-specific findings that might inform culturally and linguistically tailored CPT programs. Portuguese, as the fifth most spoken language in the world and the first in the Southern Hemisphere, remains one of the most under-represented languages in aphasia research. Identifying research published in the language of Portuguese could inform the development of contextually relevant CPT interventions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is an approach that has been adopted in various countries around the globe, mainly as a strategy to host immigrants immersed in a foreign school. In Brazil, it has been implemented with different purposes, as an immersion program for local students. However, not much is known about this adaptation, especially in the public sphere. Hence, this paper aims to investigate CLIL as an English teaching approach in Brazil. Specifically, we analyze its implementation in a public school in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on how integrating the teaching of language and content may improve students’ proficiency. We do so investigating students’ beliefs on the approach through a semi-structured interview. The interviews contained ten questions concerning their experience while learning English, more specifically in the context of High School, that were carefully analysed and helped us characterise the Brazilian CLIL and point the features that can be considered crucial for the students’ learning process. Through students’ answers we were able to identify as main factors for students proficiency: (a) students’ motivation; (b) teacher-student rapport; (c) the friendly English speaking environment; (d) use of English for communicative purposes and (e) the influence of CLIL. The analysis led us to believe that, so far, the program has been achieving its main objectives.Keywords: CLIL; bilingual schools; proficiency.
[Performance of Brazilian Portuguese and English speaking subjects on the Test of Early Language Development]

Abstract:Background: application of an American early language test in Brazilian Portuguese-speaking subjects. Aim: to compare the performance of normal Brazilian Portuguese and American English-speaking subjects on the Test of Early Language Development - Third Edition (TELD-3). Method: participants of this study were 120 subjects of both genders, ranging in age from 2:00 to 7:11 years (20 subjects in each age range). Subjects were selected and tested individually by the researcher. A comparative analysis of the subjects' performances with that observed in English-speaking children was made. Results: the results indicated that Brazilian and American subjects presented similar performances until the age of 4:11 years. Portuguese-speaking children of 5, 6 and 7 years presented higher scores on the receptive subtest of Form A when compared to their American pairs. Portuguese-speaking subjects of 5 and 6 years presented lower scores on the expressive subtest of Form B when compared to their American pairs. Conclusion: the translation of diagnostic instruments that are already available in other languages can lessen the lack of such resources in countries where these instruments are not yet available. Furthermore, this practice can allow cross-cultural studies which are relevant for researches on child language and language disabilities.

Abstract:BackgroundPatient-reported outcomes measurement instruments (PRO) are a good way to measure results after aesthetic procedures. FACE-Q is a systematized and standardized PRO tool and was not available in Portuguese.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included four stages: translation of FACE-Q, backtranslation, testing in patients who underwent facial aesthetic procedures and review of the questionnaires between September and December, 2018. Guidelines merging WHO and ISPOR's rules were followed.ResultsTranslation was conducted by two translators, resulting in two versions, translation A and translation B, which were reconciled to generate the first Portuguese version. Reconciliation showed inconsistencies between TA and TB in 63% (n = 222) of the 353 questions, which were solved by maintaining TA in 25% of cases (n = 87), TB in 27% and a new version in 11% (n = 40) of the questions. Backtranslation showed written differences with the original FACE-Q in 64 (22.7%) of the 353 question, but only one case of semantic difference, which was corrected resulting in production of the second Portuguese version. Seven patients with a mean age of 35.8 years were interviewed to assess the difficulty in understanding the questionnaires. Four patients had no or minor difficulties understanding the questionnaire, and the other three had difficulties and suggested changes that led to a third Portuguese version. The third version was reviewed for grammar and spelling resulting in the final Portuguese version.ConclusionA Brazilian Portuguese version of the FACE-Q questionnaire was obtained maintaining equivalency with the source instrument. This will allow cross-cultural research and comparison of results between different studies.Level of Evidence V

Abstract:Textbooks are a resource that is widely used in language classes. For this reason, they are also one of the principal topics in research on the field of didactics. Several studies were conducted about Portuguese as mother tongue textbooks, but there is a lack of researches and information concerning the textbooks of Portuguese as a foreign language. In this study, the researcher analyses the discourse of the authors/editors in the ‘opening texts’ of textbooks for (European) Portuguese as a foreign language, for levels A1 and A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. The study shows that writing competence is relatively neglected by the authors, and infers that might reflect the way that teaching and learning activities for writing are put into practice. Further research will allow to verify if there are indeed activities for learning to write and how they were thought out and organised. Cross-cultural adaptation of the Iranian Voice Quality of Life Profile into Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract:Purpose: To cross-culturally adapt the Voice Quality of Life Profile (IVQLP) into Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Methods: The cross-cultural adaptation process was performed in five stages: translation of the IVQLP into BP by three native BP experts fluent in American English; preparation of a consensus version; back-translation by a native American English expert fluent in BP; analysis by a committee of five experts and preparation of the final version of the instrument in BP, which was named IVQLP-Br; and pre-testing. The IVQLP-Br aims to assess the impacts of the voice more comprehensively, encompassing various areas of an individual's life. It has 43 items and a five-level response key. For the pre-test, the alternative "not applicable" was added as a response option. Thirty-six adults with self-reported risk of dysphonia participated in the pre-test. Results: In the translation stage, ten items were modified, and during the back-translation, 15 items required adjustments. No questions required reformulation after the application of the IVQLP-Br in the target population, because the option "not applicable" appeared in 12 responses without statistical significance. Conclusion: The version of the IVQLP translated into BP, named the IVQLP-Br, exhibited cross-cultural equivalence and was administrable for a more detailed analysis of the impact of the voice in different domains of an individual's life. After validation, the IVQLP-Br will be able to contribute both to clinical practice and to research with BP speakers.
PACIS XXI: Aligning English language curriculum with the CEFR/CV for 21st century learning

Abstract:"This article aims to outline and describe how the PACIS XXI team (Projetar a Área Curricular de Inglês para o Século XXI), nominated by the Azorean Regional Government’s Secretary of Education in 2017, designed and promoted the implementation of the CEFR-based English curriculum guidelines. Its acronym, which translated means to launch English as a curriculum component into the 21st century, states the essence of what the team was mandated to do. The key mission was to analyse the state of English language teaching, learning and assessment and design a curriculum document to sustain English language education at the primary level in the Azores, Portugal. In July 2022, the guidelines, Orientações Curriculares de Inglês dos 1.o e 2.o ciclos do ensino básico (OCI), were published. First, we delved into the CEFR/CV with New Descriptors (Council of Europe [COE] 2018), then later, while the guidelines were up for public discussion as a working document, between 2019 and 2022, we enhanced them using the final version of the CEFR/CV (COE 2020). Aligning curriculum guidelines with the CEFR/CV meant not only aligning proficiency levels for different grades, but also looking closely at what it means to take an action-oriented approach to language learning. Hence the need to move forward into designing descriptors for communicative activities, and not for the traditional four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. We presented planning and assessment tools and templates aligned with an action-oriented approach, incorporating the Understanding by Design/Backwards Theory (Wiggins and McTighe 2005). We also looked at pedagogical assessment, where formative assessment is key, as put forward by Dylan Wiliam (2011) as well as the conceptual framework shared by the Projeto MAIA through the Portuguese educational system. Over a hundred teachers in thirty schools were involved. Various types of training were developed, based on the curriculum guidelines, as well as needs expressed by teachers. All this work was not only validated by policymakers, but also by APPI (Associação Portuguesa de Professores de Inglês), the Portuguese English teachers’ association who thoroughly revised the guidelines. In sharing this experience, we hope to lend some insight into how the CEFR/CV can be used and adapted for curriculum design and can enhance teaching, learning and assessment. "
Validation and cultural translation for Brazilian Portuguese version of the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ-7) and Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20)

Abstract:Introduction and hypothesisPelvic floor disorders [urinary (UI) and/or fecal C (FI) incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse (POP)] may have a significant impact in womens’ quality of life (QoL). The Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ-7) and Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20) help assess these disorders; however, we do not have them culturally translated in the Brazilian Portuguese language.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed of 185 women with pelvic floor disorders (PFD group) and 65 healthy patients (control group). A translated, pilot-tested, Brazilian Portuguese version were given to these women. Internal consistency, construct validity, and floor/ceiling effect were assessed. Test–retest was performed in 79 patients after 4 weeks, and responsiveness was assessed in 42 patients after surgical treatment.ResultsInternal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) was adequate between PFD and control groups on the PFDI-20 (0.816-0.844) and PFIQ-7 (0.823-0.846). Test–retest reliability was also adequate [intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.803-0.843]. Subscales [Pelvic Organ Prolapse Impact Questionnaire (POPIQ-7) and Colorectal–Anal Impact Questionnaire (CRAIQ-7) from the PFIQ-7 demonstrated floor effect (42.70, 60, and 18.38 %, respectively) in the PFD group, with no influence at total score. No ceiling effect was observed. Construct validity was adequate at all correlations between clinical symptoms and subscales in both questionnaires in both groups. Responsiveness was demonstrated by a statistically significant reduction in scale/subscale scores from PFDI-20 and PFIQ-7 after surgical treatment.ConclusionThe PFDI-20 and PFIQ-7 presented adequate cultural translation and are reliable and valid in the Brazilian Portuguese language.

Brazilian-Portuguese Validation Assessment of the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index for Patients After Laparoendoscopic Cholecystectomy.

Abstract:Background: Cholelithiasis is currently one of the most common diagnosis in Brazil. The aim of this study was to validate the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) as a quality-of-life (QoL) assessment among the Brazilian population with syntomatic gallstone. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted after the linguistic validation process determined by the international methodology. Sixty-three patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy responded to the GIQLI-Brazil and Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) instruments. For the evaluation of reproducibility, 30 patients responded to GIQLI-Brazil two more times after 2 and 4 weeks. After the University of São Paulo Ethics Commitee Board approval (UNIFESP/CEP: 1270/2019), the study was carryed out between May 2019 and February 2020 at the Gastroenterology outpatient clinic of Hospital São Paulo-Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). Cronbach's alpha, the calculation of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Spearman's correlation were used to assess the validity and reproducibility of the instrument translated into Portuguese, and to measure correlation between the domains of the GIQLI-Brazil and SF-36 (P < .05). Results: Seven questions were modified during the process of translation and cultural adaptation. The Brazilian version of the instrument presented a Cronbach's alpha of 0.89, and excellent reproducibility through the ICC, with the following variation between domains: meteorism (ICC = 0.918; P < .001) and gastrointestinal function (lower tract) (ICC = 0.956; P < .001). The dimensions of the GIQLI-Brazil and SF-36 demonstrated a significant correlation (P < .001), except between the domains: functional aspects of the SF-36 and gastrointestinal function (lower tract) of the GIQLI-Brazil (r = 0.211). Conclusion: The GIQLI was translated and validated for Portuguese-Brazil and can be used to assess the QoL of adult patients with gastrointestinal diseases and/or disorders.

Abstract:Introduction: Health literacy has been evaluated in several countries by tools developed for local language and culture. This study aimed to adapt and to validate the Health Literacy Test (TLS) for the Brazilian Portuguese language based on the Test of functional health literacy in adults (TOFHLA). Method: The TLS, translated and adapted to the Brazilian scenario based on the Test of functional health literacy in adults, was administered to 302 users of a clinic of a University in Santa Catarina from September to October 2013. Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, Spearman's correlation and Analysis of Variance were used to assess the internal consistency, the correlation between the parts of the test and association between sociodemographic variables and the score of the Test, respectively. Results: The average score of the test was 72,2, and 54.6% of participants had adequate health literacy, 19.2% had marginal health literacy and 26.2% had inadequate health literacy. The average score of the test was inversely related to the age of the participants and directly related to the level of education. There was no significant difference in the other sociodemographic characteristics. The internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) was 0.953. The coefficients for the numerical and reading passages were 0.808 and 0.951, respectively. All the sections correlated positively and significantly with the Test, and also with each other. Conclusion: The validation of this test provides a new instrument to determine the literacy level in Brazilian adults.

Abstract:The Coaching Life Skills in Sport Questionnaire (CLSS-Q) is a 5-factor 36-item scale developed in the English language to assess the extent to which coaches are intentional in their approaches to teaching life skills through sport. To allow for usage of the CLSS-Q in Portuguese-speaking countries, the purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-cultural adaptation and the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the CLSS-Q (P-CLSS-Q). In Phase 1, the scale was cross-culturally adapted through consecutive stages of translation and back-translation, expert feedback, committee revision, and pretesting. In Phase 2, 753 youth sport coaches (i.e., 376 Brazilians and 377 Portuguese) completed the questionnaire. After randomly splitting participants into two independent samples, the translated and cross-culturally adapted questionnaire was subjected to an exploratory factor analysis and a confirmatory factor analysis. Other analyses were also applied to verify the instrument’s psychometric properties. The results led to a 5-factor 30-item scale with indications that the P-CLSS-Q has some evidence of validity in measuring the extent to which coaches intentionally teach life skills through sport in Portuguese-speaking countries. Future studies are needed to further investigate the psychometric properties of both the CLSS-Q and the P-CLSS-Q in other sociocultural contexts where coaches have varying levels of exposure to the concept of life skills and its implication for coaching practice.

Development and validation of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale

Abstract:Background: Cardiovascular diseases show high incidence and prevalence in Brazil; however, participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) is limited and has been poorly investigated in the country. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale (CRBS) was developed to assess the barriers to participation and adherence to CR. Objective: To translate, cross-culturally adapt and psychometrically validate CRBS to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: Two independent initial translations were performed. After the reverse translation, both versions were reviewed by a committee. The new version was tested in 173 patients with coronary artery disease (48 women, mean age = 63 years). Of these, 139 (80.3%) participated in CR. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha, test-retest reliability by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and construct validity by factor analysis. T-tests were used to assess criterion validity between participants and non-participants in CR. The applied test results were evaluated regarding patient characteristics (gender, age, health status and educational level). Results: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the CRBS had Cronbach's alpha of 0.88, ICC of 0.68 and disclosed five factors, most of which showed to be internally consistent and all were defined by the items. The mean score for patients in CR was 1.29 (SD = 0.27) and 2.36 for ambulatory patients (SD = 0.50) (p <0.001). Criterion validity was also supported by significant differences in total scores by gender, age and educational level. Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of CRBS has shown adequate validity and reliability, which supports its use in future studies.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The decolonial accounts made by a student teacher motivated us to problematize discourses about the “unpreparedness to teach languages at schools”, recurrent in the area of language teacher education in Brazil, and confront them with accounts of other student teachers and of applied linguistics, poststructuralist and decolonial scholars. In this interpretive study, discussions on the themes language, the subject and teaching, coming from the empirical material, led us to a perspective of teacher education as an “impossible but necessary project” (LOPES; BORGES, 2015) and to the need to educate language teachers “to talk” (SKLIAR, 2006), in view of the great complexity of teaching contexts.

Abstract:Introduction and hypothesis: Condition-specific sexual questionnaires are important patient-reported outcome measures. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire-International Urogynecology Association Revised (PISQ-IR) into Brazilian Portuguese and to clinically validate it in a Brazilian Portuguese-speaking population. Methods: Translation and validation of the PISQ-IR was performed according to the International Urogynecological Association-recommended process and guidelines. For external validity, PISQ-IR subscales were compared with the clinical measures, Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification system (POP-Q) stage, pelvic floor muscle tone, and Oxford Grading Scale (Pearson correlations). Descriptive statistics, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient), and test-retest reliability (interclass correlation coefficient) were calculated for all PISQ-IR subscales. Results: A total of 120 sexually active and 106 not sexually active women were enrolled in the study between March 2015 and July 2019. Internal consistency was acceptable, with Cronbach's alpha values 0.60-0.80, except for the sexual arousal and orgasm, sexual arousal and partner-related issues, sexual arousal and condition-specific issues, global rating of sexual quality and condition impact subscales. PISQ-IR demonstrated good reliability (α > 0.6, CIC = 0.996). The agreement for each individual questionnaire item also individually presented substantial agreement between the assessments (κ 0.61-0.8). There was a correlation between PISQ-IR and POP, mixed, stress and fecal incontinence diagnosis and a positive correlation with pelvic floor muscle function according to the Oxford Scale in sexually active women. For sexually inactive women there was a correlation between PISQ-IR and mixed urinary symptoms. Conclusions: The Brazilian Portuguese version of PISQ-IR is a reliable and valid tool that can be easily used for the identification and assessment of sexual function in Brazilian Portuguese-speaking women with pelvic floor disorders.
Translation, cross-cultural adaptation and clinimetric properties of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Brace Questionnaire

Abstract:Purpose: To perform a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Brazilian-Portuguese versions of the Brace Questionnaire in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: A forward-backward translation process was employed to produce a Brazilian Portuguese version of the Brace Questionnaire, followed by comprehensive cross-cultural adaptation stages. The measurements of internal consistency and test-retest reliability were assessed by Cronbach's a and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to analyze the concurrent validity by comparison with the Scoliosis Research Society-22r questionnaire. Results: A total of 84 scoliosis patients (age 13.4 ± 2.0 years, thoracic Cobb angle 33.3° ± 13.8°, and lumbar Cobb angle 29.8° ± 14.3°) were included. The Brace Questionnaire showed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.93) and moderate reliability (ICC = 0.86). The correlations between the Brace Questionnaire and Scoliosis Research Society-22 were r = 0.66; p = 0.011. In addition, it was found that the Brazilian version of the Brace Questionnaire does not have ceiling and floor effects. Conclusions: The Brazilian-Portuguese adaptation of the brace questionnaire shows excellent reliability and can be a valid tool for psychometric assessment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
