Abstract:Liquid-metal (LM)-based flexible and stretchable electronics has attracted widespread attention in soft robotics, self- powered devices and electronic skins. Although nanometerization can facilitate the deposition and patterning of LMs onto substrates, subsequent mechanical or laser sintering operations must be employed to recover their conductivity, which limits their wider standardized applications. To address this critical challenge, a novel self-sintering technique to prepare thin conductive patterns by employing a special LM-LAPONITE (R) (LML) ink is presented, which utilizes the capillary force between nanoparticles to sinter LM droplets and therefore requires no subsequent sintering operations. The LML ink is prepared by sonicating the mixture of bulk LM and LAPONITE (R) aqueous dispersion and possesses excellent fluidity. A theoretical model based on surface tension is established to explain the spontaneous sintering process and the effect of forces on LM droplets. In contrast to conventional passive sintering strategies, this self-sintering strategy is substrate-friendly and available to more types of substrates, including both rigid and soft substrates, and even fragile materials like leaves. Furthermore, several typical flexible electronic devices including near-field communication (NFC) tags, leaf circuits and data gloves are fabricated and investigated to demonstrate the capability of this strategy for directly manufacturing LM-based flexible electronic devices.
High-Resolution Rapid Prototyping of Liquid Metal Electronics by Direct Writing on Highly Prestretched Substrates

Abstract:A rapid and inexpensive method to produce high-resolution liquid metal patterns and electronics on stretchable substrates was introduced. Two liquid-phase gallium-indium (GaIn) alloy patterns, conductive lines, and interdigitated electrodes, were directly written or shadow mask-printed on a prestretched elastomeric substrate surface. Then, the prestretched substrate was released to recover its original length, and thus, electronic patterns simultaneously shrank on it. After these patterns were transferred to another prestretched substrate by the stamp printing method, the patterning resolution was demonstrated to increase by totally 50 times for the two successive stretch-release-shrink operations. Additionally, the resistance of the handwritten liquid metal conductive line traces remained nearly unchanged during the stretching process, which is believed to be feasible for electrical connections in stretchable electronics. The rapid prototyping of a serpentine strain sensor was successfully demonstrated to be highly sensitive and repeatable with a stretching ratio ranging from 0 to 200%. The proposed method paves a new way to fabricate stretchable electronic devices with high patterning resolution.
High Resolution Direct Writing Liquid Metal Patterns for Printed Stretchable Electronics

Abstract:A rapid and inexpensive method to produce stretchable liquid metal electronics with high resolution is introduced. Here, liquid phase gallium-indium (Gain) alloy is firstly patterned on a pre-stretched elastomer, followed by a natural shrinking process to achieve high resolution stretchable electronic components and interconnects. The idea is inspired from the inflation and deflation of patterned balloons. By a cascaded direct writing and transfer printing step, the printing resolution increases by 20 times on pre-stretched substrates. This rapid prototyping approach paves a new way for microscale printed stretchable electronics.

Abstract:Liquid metal confined in the elastomer represents an ideal platform for stretchable electronics with ultimate deformability. To enable facile and scalable patterning of conductive features, bulk liquid metal is typically dispersed into fine particles to formulate printable inks. The presence of native oxide or organic ligands stabilizing these liquid metal particles unfortunately inhibits their direct coalescence to recover the metallic conductivity and liquid-state deformability. Here, we report a chemical sintering process that converts printed liquid metal microparticles into a highly deformable conductor. The process involves the removal of surface passivating oxide by a short exposure to acid fume and subsequent selective wetting of liquid metal microparticles onto copper nanoplates present in the ink formulation. The chemical reaction provides the basis for a facile and scalable procedure to print conductive features over a large area with exceptional conductivity (>104 S cm-1) and ultrahigh stretchability (∼1000% strain). Their practical suitability is demonstrated by the fabrication of an ultrastretchable ribbon cable and an epidermal heater.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) of eutectic Gallium-Indium (EGaIn) possesses room temperature fluidity and excellent conductivity, allowing for promising potentials in flexible electronics. However, it is a considerable challenge to fabricate LM based circuits due to high surface tension of EGaIn. Here, we present a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized LM nano-ink with excellent colloidal stability can be employed for constructing flexible devices by versatile fabrication strategies. By direct-writing, the circuits can be fabricated on common paper, followed by mechanical sintered to recover conductivity. The circuits can be then enveloped by temperature-controlled roll laminator for its practical durability. By filtration, LM nanodroplets were sucked into the porous structure of a Nylon film to form conductive membrane, which could restore conductive property by friction sintering. Subsequently, customized conductive pattern readily obtained by laser cutting could be encapsulated in flexible material of Ecoflex, yielding different flexible devices including NFC antenna, capacitor based pressure sensor and bio-electrodes for nerve signal sensing of living mice in vivo. The current work presents versatile fabrication strategies of LM nano-ink based flexible electronics, which hold great possibilities in the field of printed electronics. Furthermore, the LM nano-ink that reconciles stability and biocompatibility provides huge potential for future implanted flexible electronics.

Abstract:As soft conductive materials with high liquid fluidity, the room‐temperature liquid metal alloys (LMs) offer a superior alternative to the fabrication of flexible electronics. So far, techniques aiming at patterning LMs are seriously limited by the alloy's high surface tension and poor wettability with many substrates. Additionally, LMs based mass production with fast and efficient printing on desired target still encounters tremendous unsolved challenges. Here, a one‐step liquid metal transfer printing method with wide range substrate adaptability, comprising of polymer‐based adhesive glue, its printing machine, the LMs ink, and the soft substrate is presented. It is demonstrated that even on those substrates with weak wettability to LMs, the liquid metal transfer printing still works well to create complex conductive geometries, multilayer circuits, and large‐area conductive patterns with excellent transfer efficiency, facile fabrication process, and remarkable electrical stability, which is beneficial to quickly construct wearable electronics, 3D folding conductive structures, flexible actuators, soft robots, etc. Moreover, its advantages of self‐healing and recyclable ability make the strategy possible to prepare reconfigurable circuits and further reduce the cost of fabrication and environmental pollution. This study suggests an important way for future widespread practices of liquid metal soft functional electronics. A one‐step liquid metal transfer printing method for flexible electronics based on adhesion difference of EGaIn on allied substrates is developed. The EGaIn could be adhered to polymethacrylates glue, but not paper. This fabrication method has five advantages: (1) fast fabrication; (2) excellent electrical stability; (3) simple to fabricate multilayer and large‐area circuits; (4) self‐healing ability; (5) reversion of EGaIn.

Abstract:An ultrasonic sintering strategy is developed for recovering conductivity of liquid metal (LM) ink circuits on various substrates, which can be readily used to fabricate LM based printed and flexible electronics, for those patterned on complex or curved surfaces. Printing or patterning particle‐based liquid metal (LM) ink is a good strategy to overcome poor wettability of LM for its circuits' preparation in flexible and printed electronics. Subsequently, a crucial step is to recover conductivity of LM circuits consisting of insulating LM micro/nano‐particles. However, most widely used mechanical sintering methods based on hard contact such as pressing, may not be able to contact the LM patterns' whole surface conformally, leading to insufficient sintering in some areas. Hard contact may also break delicate shapes of the printed patterns. Hereby, an ultrasonic‐assisted sintering strategy that can not only preserve original morphology of the LM circuits but also sinter circuits on various substrates of complex surface topography is proposed. The influencing factors of the ultrasonic sintering are investigated empirically and interpreted with theoretical understanding by simulation. LM circuits encapsulated inside soft elastomer are successfully sintered, proving feasibility in constructing stretchable or flexible electronics. By using water as energy transmission medium, remote sintering without any direct contact with substrate is achieved, which greatly protect LM circuits from mechanical damage. In virtue of such remote and non‐contact manipulation manner, the ultrasonic sintering strategy would greatly advance the fabrication and application scenarios of LM electronics.

Abstract:It is a significant challenge to fabricate functional stretchable electronics by directly printing Ga-based liquid metals (GLMs) due to their high surface tension. In this study, a coprinting method is developed, in which GLMs are printed together with elastic materials to overcome their poor printability. The continuous contact and extrusion of the external highly viscous elastic materials with its internal liquid metal inhibits the balling of liquid metal, achieving the liquid metal three-dimensional (3D) printing successfully. A multifunctional stretchable inductance sensor was 3D printed at the first time. This sensor can be used to test axial stretch, deflection, and radial stretch, allowing tracking of the status of soft snake structures such as the end executor of endoscope and fingers.

Abstract:Liquid‐metal (LM)‐based flexible and stretchable electronics have attracted widespread interest in wearable computing, human–machine interaction, and soft robotics. However, many current examples are one‐off prototypes, whereas future implementation requires mass production. To address this critical challenge, an integrated multimaterial 3D printing process composed of direct ink writing (DIW) of sealing silicone elastomer and special LM‐silicone (LMS) inks for manufacturing high‐performance LM‐based flexible and stretchable electronics is presented. The LMS ink is a concentrated mixture of LM microdroplets and silicone elastomer and exhibits excellent printability for DIW printing. Guided by a verified theoretical model, a printing process with high resolution and high speed can be easily implemented. Although LMS is not initially conductive, it can be activated by pressing or freezing. Activated LMS possesses good conductivity and significant electrical response to strain. Owing to LMS's unique structure, LMS‐embedded flexible electronics exhibit great damage mitigation, in that no leaking occurs even when damaged. To demonstrate the flexibility of this process in fabricating LM‐based flexible electronics, multilayer soft circuits, strain sensors, and data gloves are printed and investigated. Notably, utilizing LMS's unique activating property, some functional circuits such as one‐time pressing/freezing‐on switch can be printed without any structural design.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) eutectic gallium–indium (EGaIn) possesses the ductility of a polymer and the conductivity of metal materials, making it a promising material for flexible electronics. Fabricating LM-based circuits is challenging because of the large surface tension of EGaIn. However, the circuit can be fabricated on various substrates using an additive printing process based on the principle of ultrasonic resonance. To improve the wettability between the LM and a substrate material, LM nanoparticles/carbon nanotubes (LMP/CNT) composite nano-ink was prepared, which has excellent colloidal stability and biocompatibility. A conductive circuit was realized by attaching CNTs to LMPs for imparting intrinsic electrical conductivity. Subsequently, flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used as the substrate, and a flexible pressure sensor with a response time of 103 ms was produced. This study introduces fabrication strategies for a flexible pressure sensor based on LMP/CNT composite nano-ink and additive printing processes, providing enormous possibilities for the application of LM in the field of printed electronics.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Conventional approaches of making a flexible circuit are generally complex, environment unfriendly, time and energy consuming, and thus expensive. Here, we describe for the first time the method of using high-performance GaIn(10)-based electrical ink, a significantly neglected room temperature liquid metal, as both electrical conductors and interconnects, for directly writing flexible electronics via a rather easy going and cost effective way.METHODS:The new generation electric ink was made and its wettability with various materials was modified to be easily written on a group of either soft or rigid substrates such as epoxy resin board, glass, plastic, silica gel, paper, cotton, textiles, cloth and fiber etc. Conceptual experiments were performed to demonstrate and evaluate the capability of directly writing the electrical circuits via the invented metal ink. Mechanisms involved were interpreted through a series of fundamental measurements.RESULTS:The electrical resistivity of the fluid like GaIn(10)-based material was measured as 34.5 µΩ·cm at 297 K by four point probe method and increased with addition of the oxygen quantity, which indicates it as an excellent metal ink. The conductive line can be written with features that are approximately 10 µm thick. Several functional devices such as a light emitting diode (LED) array showing designed lighting patterns and electrical fan were made to work by directly writing the liquid metal on the specific flexible substrates. And satisfactory performances were obtained.CONCLUSIONS:The present method opens the way to directly and quickly writing flexible electronics which can be as simple as signing a name or drawing a picture on the paper. The unique merit of the GaIn(10)-based liquid metal ink lies in its low melting temperature, well controlled wettability, high electrical conductivity and good biocompability. The new electronics writing strategy and basic principle has generalized purpose and can be extended to more industrial areas, even daily life.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM) has attracted prominent attention for stretchable and elastic electronics applications due to its exceptional fluidity and conductivity at room temperature. Despite progress in this field, a great disparity remains between material fabrication and practical applications on account of the high surface tension and unavoidable oxidation of LM. Here, the composition and nanolization of liquid metal can be envisioned as effective solutions to the processibility–performance dilemma caused by high surface tension. This review aims to summarize the strategies for the fabrication, processing, and application of LM-based nano-composites. The intrinsic mechanism and superiority of the composition method will further extend the capabilities of printable ink. Recent applications of LM-based nano-composites in printing are also provided to guide the large-scale production of stretchable electronics.

Abstract:Liquid metal (In-75.4 Ga-24.5, LM) with its high electrical conductivity and flexibility at room temperature, has been gradually introduced into printed electronics. However, the low adhesion effect of LM on the common printer paper may restrict its potential value in reducing cost and expanding use. In this study, the surface property of the printer paper has been modified by a wetting method with a coating of microsize droplets on the paper surface to realize a smooth writing process using the liquid metal ink. Liquid metal-enhanced composite conductive ink with improved electrical stability and durability for flexible electronics

Abstract:For flexible electronics, conductive ink is a critical material with diverse applications. However, conventional inks, like those based on nano-silver, are expensive and result in printed patterns with limited conductivity stability. To address these limitations and enhance overall electrical performance, stability, and durability, this study developed a novel composite conductive ink incorporating liquid metal and silver microparticles. We fabricated conductive patterns and extensively investigated the sintering process, focusing on how liquid metal content and sintering techniques affect the resulting patterns' electrical performance and stability. Our findings reveal that incorporating liquid metal introduces a slight trade-off in the initial conductivity. However, subsequent thermal and hot-press sintering treatments significantly improve conductivity, with hot-press sintering leading to the most pronounced enhancement. Furthermore, the addition of liquid metal substantially bolsters the electrical stability of the patterns. Notably, conductive patterns fabricated using a 1:1 mass ratio of the ink exhibit ∆R/R0 values of only 1.72 and 0.432 after 5000 bending cycles, following thermal and hot-press sintering, respectively. This highlights the significant improvement in electrical stability and durability achieved by incorporating liquid metal into the conductive ink.

Printable and Recyclable Conductive Ink Based on a Liquid Metal with Excellent Surface Wettability for Flexible Electronics

Abstract:Flexible electronics greatly facilitate human life due to their convenience and comfortable utilization. Liquid metals are an ideal candidate for flexible devices; however, the high surface tension and poor surface wettability restrict their application on diverse substrates. Herein, a printable and recyclable ink composed of poly(vinyl alcohol) and a liquid metal (PVA-LM) was developed to resolve these problems. The materials were designed considering the compatibility between PVA and the liquid metal, and the composite theory was applied to determine the component proportion. The developed composites improved the surface wettability of the liquid metal on diverse substrates, and three-dimensional (3D) printing technology was chosen to maximize the use of this material. Moreover, the PVA-LM ink showed excellent conductivity of about 1.3 × 105 S/m after being turned on, which favored the designing of alarm systems and object locators. The flexible sensors produced with this ink have broad application, high sensitivity, and superstable signal generation even after 200 cycles. When acting as strain sensors, the constructed composites had high sensitivity for monitoring the human movements. Furthermore, liquid metals in printed products can be recycled under alkaline conditions. This study opens a new direction for the next generation of environmentally friendly flexible devices.

Printed and Laser-Activated Liquid Metal-Elastomer Conductors Enabled by Ethanol/PDMS/Liquid Metal Double Emulsions

Abstract:Soft electronic systems require stretchable, printable conductors for applications in soft robotics, wearable technologies, and human-machine interfaces. Gallium-based room-temperature liquid metals (LMs) have emerged as promising candidates, and recent liquid metal-embedded elastomers (LMEEs) have demonstrated favorable properties such as stable conductivity during strain, cyclic durability, and patternability. Here, we present an ethanol/polydimethylsiloxane/liquid metal (EtOH/PDMS/LM) double emulsion ink that enables a fast, scalable method to print LM conductors with high conductivity (7.7 × 105 S m-1), small resistance change when strained, and consistent cyclic performance (over 10,000 cycles). EtOH, the carrier solvent, is leveraged for its low viscosity to print the ink onto silicone substrates. PDMS resides at the EtOH/LM interface and cures upon deposition and EtOH evaporation, consequently bonding the LM particles to each other and to the silicone substrate. The printed PDMS-LM composite can be subsequently activated by direct laser writing, forming high-resolution electrically conductive pathways. We demonstrate the utility of the double emulsion ink by creating intricate electrical interconnects for stretchable electronic circuits. This work combines the speed, consistency, and precision of laser-assisted manufacturing with the printability, high conductivity, strain insensitivity, and mechanical robustness of the PDMS-LM composite, unlocking high-yield, high-throughput, and high-density stretchable electronics.

Abstract:Abstract Liquid metal (LM) has potential applications in flexible electronics due to its high electrical conductivity and high flexibility. However, common methods of printing LM circuits on soft substrates lack controllability, precision, and the ability to repair a damaged circuit. In this paper, we propose a method that uses a magnetic field to guide a magnetic LM (MLM) droplet to print and repair a flexible LM circuit on a femtosecond (fs) laser-patterned silicone surface. After mixing magnetic iron (Fe) particles into LM, the movement of the resultant MLM droplet could be controlled by a magnetic field. A patterned structure composed of the untreated flat domain and the LM-repellent rough microstructure produced by fs laser ablation was prepared on the silicone substrate. As an MLM droplet was guided onto the designed pattern, a soft LM circuit with smooth, uniform, and high-precision LM lines was obtained. Interestingly, the MLM droplet could also be guided to repair the circuit broken LM lines, and the repaired circuit maintained its original electrical properties. A flexible tensile sensor was prepared based on the printed LM circuit, which detected the bending degree of a finger.

Abstract:The fluidity and high electrical conductivity of a liquid metal make it an excellent material for preparing flexible electronics. Here, we established a method utilizing a widespread laser-printing technique to manufacture 3D flexible electronics. Through digital constructing of liquid alloy-philic smooth toner on liquid alloy-phobic rough substrates, we have the liquid metal selectively adhered to the designed pattern. The liquid metal circuit can then be transferred to an uneven and deformable Ecoflex surface to form a 3D circuit. Computational fluid dynamics simulation was performed to interpret the printing mechanism of the liquid metal on a substrate with selected adhesion. Flexible electronics fabricated through this method reveal great performance and stability, opening up opportunities for office and home flexible electronics manufacture, especially for lighting, heating, and logistics. By making the full use of the laser printers, our method not only saves the cost and time in preparation but also identifies favorable prospects for the mature laser-printing industry to promote next-generation flexible electronics fabrication.
