Abstract:Background: Meeting 24-h movement behaviors (24-HMB: physical activity [PA], screen time [ST], and sleep [SL]) recommendations may be associated with positive health outcomes among youth with specific mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental (MBD) conditions. However, temporal trends and disparities in meeting 24-HMB guidelines in these higher-risk groups have not been investigated, hampering the development of evidence-based clinical and public health interventions. Methods: Serial, cross-sectional analyses of nationally National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) data (including U.S. youth aged 6-17 years with MBD conditions) were conducted. The time-trends survey data was conducted between 2016 and 2021. The prevalence of 24-HMB adherence estimates were reported for the overall sample and for various sociodemographic subgroups. The subgroups analyzed included: age group (children[aged 6 to 13 years], adolescents[aged 14 to 17 years]), sex, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. Results: Data on 52,634 individuals (mean age, 12.0 years [SD,3.5]; 28,829 [58.0 %] boys) were analyzed. From 2016 to 2021 the estimated trend in meeting PA + ST + SL guidelines declined (-0.8 % [95%CI, -1.0 % to -0.5 %], P for trend <0.001), whereas meeting none of 24-HMB guidelines increased (2.2 % [1.8 % to 2.6 %], P for trend <0.001). White participants, children, and boys reported higher estimated prevalence of meeting full integrated (PA + ST + SL) guidelines. Discussion: The temporal trends observed in this study highlight the importance of consistently monitoring movement behavior among MBD youth and identifying variations by sociodemographic groups in meeting 24-HMB guidelines for health promotion within these vulnerable groups.

Abstract:Background: The 24-Hour Movement Guidelines (24-HMG) recommend a balanced combination of physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB) and sleep (SLP) for optimal health. However, there is limited understanding of how well U.S. adolescents adhere to these guidelines. This study aims to analyze the prevalence trends of meeting the 24-HMG among a nationally representative sample of U.S. general adolescents. Methods: The study included 2,273 adolescents (55.3% boys) aged 16–19 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016. The researchers categorized the adolescents based on whether they met various PA, SB, and SLP recommendations, as well as different combinations of these recommendations, separately for boys and girls. The prevalence rate, weighted by survey data, was calculated along with a 95% confidence interval (CI) to assess the changes in meeting the 24-HMG among U.S. adolescents across different survey years and sociodemographic subgroups. Results: In the 2015–2016 cycle, approximately 6.3% of adolescents did not meet any of the three recommendations, while only 19.2% of adolescents achieved all three guidelines. Compliance with PA and SB recommendations among adolescents has decreased over time, from 72.5% (65.9% to 79.2%) to 64.2% (57.4% to 70.9%) for PA, and from 59.0% (49.6% to 68.4%) to 46.6% (37.8% to 55.5%) for SB, respectively, from 2007–2008 cycle to 2015–2016 cycle. Boys exhibited more favorable patterns in meeting different sets of recommendations compared to girls ( p -value <0.001). This includes meeting both PA and SB guidelines (15.5% for boys and 11.1% for girls) and meeting both PA and SLP guidelines (19.5% for boys and 15.7% for girls). The level of parental education was found to have effect on meeting all three guidelines ( P trend < 0.05). Conclusion: We analyzed ten consecutive years of representative NHANES data to evaluate the prevalence meeting 24-HMG and found that the proportion of adolescents aged 16–19 in the U.S. who adhered to all three movement guidelines simultaneously has consistently remained low throughout each survey cycle. Notably, there has been a significant decline in the proportion of adolescents meeting the SB guideline.

Abstract:Introduction: The purpose of this study was to explore associations between participation in out-of-school/weekend organized activities and adherence to the 24-hour movement guidelines among US adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) (N=16,403, age=15.1±1.4 years, 48.1% female) was used for analyses in 2024. A parent/guardian completed surveys regarding adolescents' 24-hour movement behaviors (physical activity [PA], sleep [SL], and screentime [ST]), as well as participation in out-of-school and weekend activities (sports, clubs, other organized activities, and volunteering). Weighted logistic regression models were used to examine associations between participation in out-of-school and weekend organized activities and 24-hour movement guideline adherence, adjusted for sex, age, race/ethnicity, federal poverty level status, metropolitan statistical area status, and overweight/obesity status. Results: Only 4.8% of adolescents met all three guidelines concurrently. Adolescents who participated in sports teams/lessons had higher odds of meeting PA (OR=2.11,95%CI:1.67-2.66), ST (OR=1.31,95%CI:1.12-1.53), PA+ST (OR=2.24,95%CI:1.63-3.07), PA+SL (OR=2.00,95%CI:1.53-2.63), SL+ST (OR=1.40,95%CI;1.19-1.66), and all three guidelines (OR=2.33,95%CI:1.61-3.39). Participation in other organized activities/lessons was associated with higher odds of meeting ST (OR=1.32,95%CI:1.13-1.56), and SL+ST guidelines (OR=1.39, 95%CI:1.16-1.66). Adolescents who volunteered had higher odds of meeting ST (OR=1.68,95%CI: 1.42-1.98), PA+ST (OR=1.75,95%CI:1.25-2.45), SL+ST (OR=1.64,95%CI:1.38-1.95), and all three guidelines (OR=1.80,95%CI:1.20-2.72). Conclusions: Participating in sports teams/lessons and community service/volunteer work is beneficially associated with concurrently meeting all three 24-hour movement guidelines and participating in other organized activities or lessons is associated with adherence to individual components of the 24-hour movement guidelines among US adolescents.

Abstract:Background: Little is known about how adhering to the health guidelines for physical activity (PA), screen time (ST), and sleep duration (SD) relates to substance use in adolescents. Thus, this study aims to explore the potential association between adherence to the 24-h movement behavior (24-h MB) guidelines and substance use among adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance was analyzed. Participants reported their weekly PA, ST, SD, and substance use (alcohol and smoking) over the past 30 days. The mean age in the total participants was 15.56, and 48.03 % of the participants were females. Logistic regression was used in this study to explore the potential association between 24-h MB and substance use. Odds ratios (ORs) were reported alongside a 95 % confidence interval to enhance understanding of the observed association. Results: Only 2.22 % participants adhered to all three 24-h MB guidelines, while 47.99 % did not follow any guidelines. Notably, there was no significant difference in the odds of cigarette smoking between participants who followed none of the guidelines and those who followed some or all of them. Nevertheless, adherence to one or more guidelines was found to be associated with higher odds of abstaining from alcohol consumption compared to non-adherence (one guidelines: OR = 1.17 [1.08, 1.28], two guidelines: OR = 1.28 [1.13, 1.44]). Conclusions: Adhering to 24-h MB guidelines may reduce adolescents' alcohol consumption, but the adherence was not significantly associated with smoking. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings. These results can inform adolescent health policies and interventions aimed at reducing substance use from the perspective of healthy time-use behaviors, which can be used for researchers and educator.

Abstract:Systematic review registration: Twenty-four-hour movement behaviors have significant implications for physical and mental health throughout one's lifespan. Consistent with movement behaviors, several countries have formulated and published 24-h movement guidelines. This review summarized the studies related to 24-h movement guidelines among children and adolescents from six databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus). In a total of 61 studies that discussed compliance with 24-h movement guidelines, the overall adherence rate was very low (7.1%), with boys exceeding girls, children surpassing adolescents, and regional differences. A total of 39 studies examined the associations between 24-h movement guidelines and health indicators. Findings indicated that meeting all three guidelines was favorably associated with adiposity, cardiometabolic health, mental and social health, physical fitness, health-related quality of life, academic achievement, cognitive development, perceived health, dietary patterns, and myopia. Future research should utilize longitudinal and experimental designs to enhance our understanding of the associations between 24-h movement guidelines and health indicators, thereby aiding the formulation and refinement of such guidelines. https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/, CRD42023481230.

Abstract:Objectives Low adherence to 24-hour Movement Guideline s for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, screen time and sleep during adolescence is well documented, yet recommendations regarding light physical activity, vigorous physical activity and muscle and bone strengthening activities have received less attention. This study comprehensively examined adherence to seven components of the movement guidelines in adolescents and analysed disparities by age and gender. Design Longitudinal study with two assessment time points, separated by one year. Methods Data were collected in 216 New Zealand adolescents aged 12–17 years, and at 1-year follow-up in 167 participants (77 %), using thigh-worn accelerometers and a self-reported diary. Results Adherence rates were 3.7 % for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, 13.0 % for screen time, 44.0 % for sleep, 14.4 % for light physical activity, 36.1 % for vigorous physical activity, 30.6 % for bone and muscle strengthening activities, and 4.6 % for consistent bedtimes. Less than 1 % of participants met all seven recommendations. Adherence was disproportionately low amongst older adolescents for light physical activity, screen time and consistent bedtimes, and amongst girls for vigorous physical activity and muscle and bone strengthening activities. Over one year, adherence declined for light physical activity (15.0 %–7.2 %) and screen time (15.6 %–6.0 %). Conclusions New Zealand adolescents are not adhering to recommendations for a healthy balance of time use outlined in the 24-h Movement Guidelines. These findings highlight the need for adolescents to increase their daily movement, with a particular focus on light physical activity amongst older adolescents and muscle and bone strengthening activities amongst girls.

Meeting the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines and Outcomes in Adolescents with ADHD: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study

Abstract:According to the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, meeting daily recommendations for physical activity, sleep, and screen time is important for obtaining optimal health benefits. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to examine (a) the prevalence of meeting the movement guidelines; and (b) the associations between meeting the guidelines and selected outcomes in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Data from the 2018–2019 National Survey for Children’s Health dataset was used. Participants were adolescents (10–17 years) with ADHD and without other chronic conditions. Outcomes were flourishing, school engagement, and body weight status. Exposures of interest were adherence to the movement guidelines. The frequency of the participants’ adherence to the guidelines was estimated, and regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between adherence to the guidelines and outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. Complete observations were available for 634 adolescents with ADHD. Overall, 46.8% of the participants met at least one movement guideline, but only 6.5% met all three. The number of guidelines met had a significant and positive association with flourishing and school engagement (β = 0.21/0.17, ptrend < 0.001). Compared with meeting all three guidelines, significant associations with lower flourishing levels were found in participants who met none, sleep only, and sedentary time only (β = −0.38–−0.13, p < 0.05). Similar findings were identified in the school engagement outcome. Adherence to the guidelines was, however, not significantly associated with the odds of being overweight or obese. Collectively, the findings suggest the movement guidelines may be appropriate for extending to adolescents with ADHD and there is a need to increase adherence to the guidelines in this group.
Is adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines associated with greater academic-related outcomes in children and adolescents? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesise the evidence for the association of adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines with academic-related outcomes in children and adolescents. This systematic review was based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement. PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, WOS, SPORTDiscus, and EMBASE were searched from their inception to 12 December 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to assess the risk of bias of included studies. In total, 4326 records were identified through database searches; 10 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this systematic review. There were eight cross-sectional studies and two longitudinal studies; the main academic-related outcomes were academic achievement and cognitive function. A small association between adherence to all three recommendations and academic achievement ( k = 5, r = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.10–0.24, I 2 = 49%) was found compared to those who did not adhere to any recommendations. Conclusion : Findings from this systematic review and meta-analysis reveal a small association between adherence to all three recommendations and greater academic achievement in children and adolescents. Nevertheless, it is imperative to underscore the need for more studies to establish robust evidence underpinning this relationship. Trial registration : PROSPERO (CRD42021295403). What is Known: • Regular physical activity, reduced screen time, and optimal sleep duration are independently associated with improved academic-related outcomes in children and adolescents. • The associations between adherence to the 24-h movement guidelines and academic-related outcomes in children and adolescents have not been quantitatively synthesised. What is New: • There is a small but positive association between adherence to all three recommendations of the 24-h movement guidelines and greater academic achievement in children and adolescents. • Further well-designed research is needed to focus on academic achievement, cognitive function and classroom behaviours in young individuals.

Recent trends and disparities in screen-based sedentary behavior and physical activity among U.S. overweight youth, 2018-2022

Abstract:Background: Sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) are crucial factors influencing health outcomes in overweight children and adolescents. However, recent changes in SB and PA trends among U.S. overweight youth have not been well described, limiting the development of evidence-based clinical and public health interventions. Methods: Serial, cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) on U.S. overweight youth aged 6-17 years, spanning from 2018 to 2022. Linear regression models were employed to analyze time trends, with survey year as the exposure and recreational screen time (ST), adherence to the ≤2 h/day ST guideline, and adherence to the ≥1 h/day PA guideline as the outcomes. Multivariable-adjusted logistic and linear regressions were used to evaluate trends, adjusting for age group, sex, race/ethnicity, household income, and the highest education level of primary caregivers. Results: Data from 11,865 individuals (mean age 12.3 years [SD 2.9]; 6417 [52.3 %] girls) were analyzed. From 2018 to 2022, the average ST duration among overweight youth increased from 3.7 h to 4.1 h per day, a statistically significant increase (p = 0.07). The estimated prevalence of overweight youth meeting the ≤2 h/day ST guideline decreased from 44.6 % to 30.0 % (p = 0.007). Additionally, the prevalence of meeting the ≥1 h/day PA guideline remained low and stable, ranging from 8.4 % to 12.3 % during the analysis period (p = 0.6). Discussion: In this nationally representative sample of U.S. overweight youth, ST increased by nearly 0.4 h/day over the five-year observation period, while adherence to the ≤2 h/day ST guideline decreased. Adherence to the ≥1 h/day PA guideline remained consistently low. These patterns were consistent across sociodemographic subgroups (age group, sex, ethnicity, and household income). These findings underscore the need for enhanced public health initiatives targeting U.S. youth to reduce recreational screen time and promote a physically active lifestyle.
Adherence to 24-Hour Movement Recommendations and Health Indicators in Early Adolescence: Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Associations in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study

Abstract:Purpose: Adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines of ≥60 minutes of physical activity, ≤2 hours of screen time, and 9-11 hours of sleep has been shown to benefit cognitive, physical, and psychosocial health in children and young adolescents aged 5-13 years. However, these findings have mostly been based on cross-sectional studies or relatively small samples and the associations between adherence to guidelines and brain structure remain to be evaluated. Methods: Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ (ABCD) study of 10,574 early adolescents aged 9-14 years from September 2016 to January 2021 were used to examine whether adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines benefits cognition (general cognitive ability, executive function, and learning/memory assessed by the National Institutes of Health Toolbox neurocognitive battery), body mass index, psychosocial health (internalizing, externalizing, and total problems from the parent-reported Child Behavior Checklist), and magnetic resonance imaging-derived brain morphometric measures at baseline (T1), ∼2 years later (T2), and longitudinally from T1 to T2 (T2-T1). Multivariable linear mixed models were used, with adjustments for sociodemographic confounders. Time elapsed and T1 outcome measures were also controlled for in longitudinal models. Results: Better cognitive scores, fewer behavioral problems, lower adiposity levels, and greater gray matter volumes were observed in those who met both sleep and screen time recommendations compared to those who met none. Longitudinal follow-up further supports these findings; participants who met both recommendations at T1 and T2 evidenced better outcome measures than those who met none. Discussion: These findings support consideration of integrated rather than isolated movement recommendations across the day in early adolescence for better cognitive, physical and psychosocial health. Although the associations between physical activity and health indicators were less consistent in this study, the significant findings from sleep and screen time demonstrate the importance of considering movement recommendations in an integrated rather than isolated manner for adolescent health. It is recommended that movement behaviors be simultaneously targeted for better developmental outcomes.
Adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines and academic performance in adolescents

Abstract:Objective: The aim of the study was to examine the association between meeting combinations of the Canadian 24-h movement guidelines and academic performance in adolescents. Study design: This cross-sectional study used the 2017 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey, a survey representative of Ontario students in grades 7-12 attending publicly funded schools. A total of 10,160 students were included in the analysis. Methods: Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), screen time, sleep duration, and academic performance were self-reported. A multiple linear regression model was used to examine differences in academic performance between adolescents meeting and those not meeting the combinations of movement guidelines (≥60 min/day of MVPA; ≤2 h/day of screen time; 9-11 h/night of sleep for ages 11-13 years, 8-10 h/night for ages 14-17 years, and 7-9 h/night for ages 18 years or older). Covariates included age, sex, ethnicity, subjective socio-economic status, body mass index z-score, and substance use. Results: We found that 5.1% of students met all three movement guidelines, whereas 39.0% did not meet any. Middle school students who met all three guidelines or either the screen time or sleep guideline displayed better academic performance than those who met none of the guidelines. High school students who met the screen time and sleep guidelines displayed better academic performance than those who did not meet any guidelines. Conclusions: Adhering to screen time and sleep duration recommendations is associated with better academic performance among adolescents.
Adherence to 24-h movement behavior guidelines and psychosocial functioning in young children: a longitudinal analysis

Abstract:Abstract Background A recent paradigm shift has highlighted the importance of considering how sleep, physical activity and sedentary behaviour work together to influence health, rather than examining each behaviour individually. We aimed to determine how adherence to 24-h movement behavior guidelines from infancy to the preschool years influences mental health and self-regulation at 5 years of age. Methods Twenty-four hour movement behaviors were measured by 7-day actigraphy (physical activity, sleep) or questionnaires (screen time) in 528 children at 1, 2, 3.5, and 5 years of age and compared to mental health (anxiety, depression), adaptive skills (resilience), self-regulation (attentional problems, hyperactivity, emotional self-control, executive functioning), and inhibitory control (Statue, Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task) outcomes at 5 years of age. Adjusted standardised mean differences (95% CI) were determined between those who did and did not achieve guidelines at each age. Results Children who met physical activity guidelines at 1 year of age (38.7%) had lower depression (mean difference [MD]: -0.28; 95% CI: -0.51, -0.06) and anxiety (MD: -0.23; 95% CI: -0.47, 0.00) scores than those who did not. At the same age, sleeping for 11–14 h or having consistent wake and sleep times was associated with lower anxiety (MD: -0.34; 95% CI: -0.66, -0.02) and higher resilience (MD: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.68) scores respectively. No significant relationships were observed at any other age or for any measure of self-regulation. Children who consistently met screen time guidelines had lower anxiety (MD: -0.43; 95% CI: -0.68, -0.18) and depression (MD: -0.36; 95% CI: -0.62, -0.09) scores at 5. However, few significant relationships were observed for adherence to all three guidelines; anxiety scores were lower (MD: -0.42; 95% CI: -0.72, -0.12) in the 20.2% who adhered at 1 year of age, and depression scores were lower (MD: -0.25; 95% CI: -0.48, -0.02) in the 36.7% who adhered at 5 years of age compared with children who did not meet all three guidelines. Conclusions Although adherence to some individual movement guidelines at certain ages throughout early childhood was associated with improved mental health and wellbeing at 5 years of age, particularly reduced anxiety and depression scores, there was little consistency in these relationships. Adherence to 24-Hour Movement Guidelines in Relation to the Risk of Overweight and Obesity Among Children and Adolescents

Abstract:Purpose Adherence to overall 24-hour Movement Guidelines (24HGs) has been associated with childhood obesity in cross-sectional studies. However, few longitudinal studies have examined such associations, especially in China. We aimed to explore prospective associations between adherence to recommendations of 24HGs and risks of developing overweight and obesity among children and adolescents. Methods We included participants (aged 6–17 years) without overweight and obesity at enrollment from the China Health and Nutrition Survey in 2004–2011 surveys and followed them till 2015. We assigned one point each to the adherence of guidelines for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, recreational screen time and sleep, and summed them up to indicate the overall level of adherence to 24HGs (range: 0–3 points). The primary outcome was the first occurrence of overweight or obesity. Multivariable cox proportional hazard models were used to evaluate the corresponding associations. Results Among 1,382 participants (mean age: 10.3 ± 3.2 years; 48.4% girls), a total of 152 (11%) individuals were identified as incident overweight and obesity during an average of 4.7 years of follow-up. Compared with participants nonadherent to any of the guidelines, those adhering to one (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.38, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.21–0.71, p < .01), two (HR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.28–0.88, p = .02), and three (HR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.17–0.91, p = .03) recommendations had significantly lower risks of developing overweight and obesity. Discussion Children and adolescents who met any recommendations of 24HGs had significantly lower risks of developing subsequent overweight and obesity. Setting achievable goals such as adopting at least one recommendation could be considered in future public health recommendations to accelerate progress in childhood obesity prevention.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the association between meeting 24‐h movement guidelines and academic performance among Chinese children and adolescents. Cross‐sectional data on 67,281 Chinese children and adolescents were used for the analyses. Adherence to 24‐h movement guidelines and academic performance (i.e., grades in Chinese, Math, and English), as well as sociodemographic information, were measured using a self‐reported questionnaire. 24‐h movement guidelines recommend at least 60 min/day of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), no more than 2 h/day of recreational screen time (ST), and 9–11 h/night of sleep for ages 11–13 years or 8–10 h/night for ages 14–17 years. Multilevel generalized linear models were used to explore the associations between 24‐h movement guidelines and academic performance. Results indicated that compared to not meeting any of the three 24‐h movement guidelines, participants meeting one or more guidelines were more likely to report better academic performance in Chinese, Math, and English. Meeting all the three guidelines was associated with better academic performance in Chinese (odds ratio [OR] = 1.56), Math (OR = 1.51), and English (OR = 1.73). Additionally, meeting the physical activity (PA) guidelines only was associated with better academic performance in Chinese; meeting only the ST guidelines, both ST and sleep guidelines, and both ST and PA guidelines were associated with better academic performance in Chinese, Math, and English. Subgroup analyses indicated that the associations between 24‐h movement guidelines and academic performance varied across grade groups and course subjects. As such, in general, adherence to 24‐h movement guidelines was related to better self‐reported academic performance. Healthy movement behaviors should be promoted for health and academic achievement in Chinese children and adolescents.

Abstract:Abstract Background There remains a need for prospective research examining movement behaviours in the prevention and management of mental illness. This study examined whether changes in adherence to the 24-h Movement Guidelines (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity [MVPA], sleep duration, screen time) were associated with depression symptoms among youth. Methods Conditional change models were used to analyze two waves of longitudinal questionnaire data (2016/17, 2017/18) from students in grades 9–12 ( N = 2292) attending 12 schools in Ontario and British Columbia, Canada, as part of the COMPASS study. One-year change in adherence to the MVPA, screen time, and sleep duration guidelines were modeled as predictors of depressive symptoms, adjusting for covariates and prior year depressive symptoms. Models were stratified by sex. Results Continued adherence to sleep guidelines and transitioning from inadequate to sufficient sleep were associated with lower depressive symptoms than continued nonadherence, and continued adherence was associated with lower depression than transitioning from sufficient to short sleep. For screen time, transitioning from exceeding guidelines to guideline adherence was associated with lower depressive symptoms than continued nonadherence. MVPA guideline adherence was not associated with depression scores, when controlling for sleep and screen time guideline adherence change and covariates. When combined, meeting additional guidelines than the year prior was associated with lower depressive symptoms among females only. Conclusions Adherence to the sleep guidelines emerged as the most consistent predictor of depression symptoms. Promoting adherence to the Movement Guidelines, particularly sleep, should be considered priorities for youth mental health at a population level.

Abstract:Most evidence regarding the relationships between adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines and adolescent mental health have been derived from cross-sectional studies or have ignored positive mental health indicators. The current prospective study examined the associations between adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines and changes in mental well-being among Chinese adolescents over three months. 816 Chinese adolescents ( M age = 14.76 years; SD = 0.81) completed baseline and follow-up scales of 24-hour movement behaviours, mental well-being, and covariates. Linear mixed-effects models were used for data analyses, with adjustments for covariates and mental well-being at baseline. There was a significant improvement in mental well-being across the three months, and the improvement in mental well-being was positively associated with meeting any single guidelines and both physical activity and sleep guidelines but not adherence to all three guidelines. Meeting both physical activity and sleep recommendations appears to exert more significant benefits on mental well-being than meeting one or two other recommendations. An integrative approach to mental health promotion by focusing on 24-hour movement behaviours (at least physical activity and sleep) may be more effective than focusing on a single behaviour alone.

Abstract:Movement behaviours (e.g., physical inactivity, short sleep duration, high screen time) are associated with mental illness but less is known about the relationship between health behaviours and positive mental health constructs such as flourishing. This study examines if changes in adherence to the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Behaviour Guidelines for Children and Youth (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (PA), total screen time (ST), sleep) are associated with changes in youth flourishing over one year.Students (N = 2292) were recruited from 12 secondary schools in Canada participating in the COMPASS study. Conditional change models were used to analyze two waves of longitudinal questionnaire data from 2016 to 17 to 2017–18. One-year change in adherence to the MVPA, ST, and sleep duration guidelines were modeled as predictors of flourishing adjusting for covariates. Models were stratified by sex.For males only, meeting MVPA guidelines both years was associated with higher flourishing compared to males not meeting guidelines (Est:0.87, SE:0.36, p = .01). Reducing ST was associated with higher flourishing for males only relative to other males who continued to exceed the ST guidelines (Est:2.23, SE:1.04, p < .03). Longer sleep duration had the most consistent association with greater flourishing among females (Est:1.02, SE:0.3, p < .001) and males (Est:0.93, SE:0.34, p < .006), highlighting sleep as a public health priority in the context of 24-hour movement behaviours. These findings contribute to increasing calls for research examining positive mental health constructs independent of mental illness.

Integrating perceived physical environments and the theory of planned behaviors when explaining adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines in Chinese adolescents

Abstract:Purposes: Most adolescents worldwide do not meet 24-h movement guidelines, which recommend specific level of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep for optimal health. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of understanding regarding how social cognitive and physical environmental factors influence adolescents' compliance with these guidelines. This prospective study aimed to examine the associations between perceived physical environments, constructs of the theory of planned behavior (TPB), habit strength, and adherence to 24-h movement guidelines in Chinese adolescents over a three-month period. Methods: A total of 629 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 14.59 years, SD = 0.64) completed a set of questionnaires comprising perceived physical environmental characteristics, constructs of the TPB, habit strength, and 24-h movement behaviors at baseline and 3 months later. Data analysis was conducted using variance-based structural equation modeling. Results: Attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control had a direct effect on intention and intention had a direct effect on number of the guidelines being met. Habit strength was a significant predictor of adherence to the guidelines, although its moderating effect on the intention-behavior relationship was not significant. Perceived neighborhood facility accessibility, school facility availability, and home physical activity equipment had significant indirect effects on intention through attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control. However, constructs of the TPB did not serve as mediators in the relationship between perceived physical environments and the number of guidelines being met. Conclusion: This study offers preliminary evidence supporting the integration of perceived physical environments and the TPB in predicting adolescents' adherence to 24-h movement guidelines. Future research should consider using experimental study designs with rigorous measures of 24-h movement behaviors to establish causal relationships.

Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice

Abstract:Background No comprehensive bibliometric analyses have examined research articles based on the 24-hour movement guidelines, which are necessary to evaluate the impact of the research field, map the scientific structure of the research landscape, and identify knowledge gaps. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyse the published research articles using the 24-hour movement guidelines and assess their bibliometric characteristics. Methods All databases indexed in the Web of Science database were searched on 6 th March 2024, and bibliometric characteristics of the studies, from the inception of 2016, were imported and analysed. Descriptive statistics and visualisations by the VOSviewer were used for the presentation of bibliometric characteristics. Results 120 studies using the 24-hour movement guidelines in children and adolescents were included for analysis in this study. In general, number of the related publications around the 24-hour movement guidelines increased from 2016 until now. 16 distinct clusters of author networking were displayed, of which the Canadian team was the strongest cluster with the highest research impacts. Of the included studies, cross-sectional studies accounted for the majority. North America and Europe were the leading two study locations across the included studies. Highly varied adherence rate to the 24-hour movement guidelines across the included studies were observed. In terms of correlates and health outcomes of meeting the 24-hour movement guidelines, separately, sociodemographic and health functioning characteristics were the most examined aspects. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive scientific overview for research using the 24-hour movement guidelines in children and adolescents, which can guide future 24-hour movement guidelines related research in this population. Future studies should be focused on considering using improved study design to address the relevant research questions.

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the association between adherence to sleep, dietary, screen time, and physical activity (PA) (8-5-2-1-0) guidelines and risk of high body mass index (BMI ≥ 85 percentile) among U.S. adolescents and to assess for racial inequities and age-varying effects in these associations. Methods: Data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System survey were used to conduct multivariable logistic regression models and moderation analysis by race/ethnicity and age using time-varying varying effect models (TVEM) and estimate associations of interest. Results: Of the 13,518 adolescents aged ≥ 14 years, only 0.5% met all guidelines. Adolescents adhering to sleep guidelines had a 21% reduction in their odds of having a high BMI (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.67-0.93). Those adhering to PA guidelines had a 34% reduction in their odds of having a high BMI (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.56-0.79), and those adhering to screen time guidelines had a 17% reduction in their odds of having a high BMI (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.72-0.95). TVEM showed associations between adherence to sleep and screen time guidelines with high BMI fluctuate and are at specific ages. TVEM revealed substantial racial/ethnic differences in the age-varying association between adherence to 8-5-2-1-0 guidelines and high BMI throughout adolescence. Conclusions: Associations between adherence to sleep and screen time guidelines and high BMI fluctuate with age, highlighting the need for nuanced interventions targeting 24-h movement guidelines (sleep, PA, and screen time) across adolescence, particularly given racial/ethnic disparities.
