Abstract:Optical interferometry with its capability to encode phase difference has found numerous applications in metrology. In the recent past, an investigation was carried out using a modified Michelson interferometer, where it was shown that the phase of the superposed field from a 'two-beam' interference can vary nonlinearly even if the phase difference between the superposing fields varies linearly. The nonlinear behavior can be controlled by parameters such as amplitude ratio, coherence, and polarization. However, the requirement of an additional reference and the need for vibration-free surroundings for the experiment due to non-common path interferometer have limited the applicability of the scheme for optical metrology. In addition, the introduction of controlled amount of phase difference between the interfering fields, specifically to force them to a near out-of-phase condition was limited by the minimum voltage step of devices like piezo electric transducer-based motion stages. In the present work, to overcome these challenges, we propose a computer-generated hologram (CGH) assisted optical interference that can maintain a near common-path interferometry for three-beam interference and controllably introduce an arbitrarily finite amount of phase difference between the superposing fields. The superposition of two optical fields along with an additional field for optical phase measurement is carried out by displaying the CGHs using an amplitude-modulating spatial light modulator. The use of the Fourier transform holography for CGH simplifies both the generation and optical reconstruction for the precise investigation of nonlinear nature of the phase of the superposed field for a linear variation of phase difference introduced between the interfering fields.
