Abstract:Due to the large reversible capacities, transition-metal oxides have received a lot of interest as anodes for lithium-ion batteries. However, their poor electrical conductivity and dramatic volume change prevent them from being widely used in lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we present a double protection strategy by fabricating a pomegranate-like N-doped carbon-coated CoOx clusters supported on three-dimensional (3D) graphene framework structure (x@GF) to improve the electrochemical performance of CoOx in lithium storage. The hierarchical structure is constructed by the thermal transformation of Co-MOF to CoOx with N-doped carbon/graphene by using polyaniline-coated metal–organic framework (Co-MOF)/graphene oxide as precursors. The pomegranate clusters coupled with porous CoOx induced by the partial thermal collapse of the MOF with N-doped carbon were derived from polyaniline and 3D high-conductivity graphene frameworks. The confinement of the clusters effectively relieves the volume expansion of CoOx and significantly shortens the transport paths of electrons and ions in the composite. The robust 3D graphene frameworks further offer highly interpenetrated conductive networks. Therefore, the flexible x@GF anode delivered a high capacity (at 0.1 A g–1, 1153 mA h g–1), excellent rate performance (at 8 A g–1, 337 mA h g–1), and superlong cycling stability (66.4% capacity retention after 2500 cycles at 1000 mA g–1).The Supporting Information is available free of charge at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsaem.2c00388.SEM images of @GO, x@GF, CoOx@GF, x, CoOx, and and TEM images of x and CoOx (Figure S1); detailed explanation of SEM and TEM (Page S2); FTIR spectra of the x and (Figure S2a); Raman spectra of the @GO, , Co-MOF, , and x (Figure S2b); XRD patterns of x, , and @GO (Figure S2c); TGA of x@GF, CoOx@GF, x, CoOx, , and Co-MOF tested in air from 30 to 800 °C at 10 °C min–1 (Figure S2d); detailed explanation of TGA (Page S2); N2 sorption isothermal lines of x and (Figure S3a); XPS spectrum of x@GF and the corresponding high resolution of the total spectrum, C 1s, N 1s, O 1s, and Co 2p (Figure S3b–f); XPS spectrum of CoOx@GF and the corresponding high resolution of the total spectrum, C 1s, N 1s, O 1s, and Co 2p (Figure S4a–e); XPS spectrum of CoOx and the corresponding high resolution of the total spectrum, O 1s, and Co 2p (Figure S4f–h); detailed explanation of XPS (Page S5); digital photos of the flexible x@GF electrode at its initial and folded states (Figure S5a); side-view and top-view SEM images of the pressed x@GF film electrode (Figure S5b,c); cycling performance of x and electrodes (Figure S6a); rate performance of x and electrodes (Figure S6b); electrochemical performance of the x@GF electrode with the bending state: cycling performance, rate performance, and long cycling performance (Figure S6c–e); comparison of the electrochemical performance of the CoOx-based electrode for lithium-ion batteries (Table S1); equivalent circuit for the x@GF electrode (Figure S7a); Nyquist plots of the x@GF electrode before and after cycling tests (Figure S7b); SEM and TEM images of the x@GF film after 100 cycles (Figure S7c,d); detailed explanation of Nyquist plots (Page S11); CV curves of CoOx@GF at different sweep speeds from 0.1 to 10 mV s–1 (Figure S8a); linear relation between log i and log v generated from CV curves (Figure S8b); red region representing the capacity-controlled contribution at 0.1 mV s–1 (Figure S8c); capacity- and diffusion-controlled contributions at various scan rates (Figure S8d); cycling performances of the LCO cathode at 100 mA g–1 (the inset shows the charge/discharge profiles) (Figure S9a); galvanostatic charge/discharge profiles of LCO||x@GF full cells at 100 mA g–1 (based on the total electrode mass of both the cathode and the anode) (Figure S9b); references (Pages S12–S13) (PDF)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
