Abstract:Introduction: Recent literature in physical therapy education suggests learners' non-cognitive skills, such as grit and reflection, may be predictors of success. Little is known about the relationship of these constructs to each other or success during the first year of entry level physical therapist education. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between Reflection-In- Learning Scale (RLS), grit, and grade point average (GPA) of entry-level physical therapy students during the first year of didactic instruction. Methods: One hundred and fourteen entry-level doctor of physical therapy students enrolled in a private university completed the original 12-item Grit Scale (Grit 1) and the RLS (RLS 1) during the first term and again at the end of the third trimester (Grit 2 and RLS 2). Results: The relationship between Grit 1 and RLS 1 demonstrated a fair, positive, significant correlation (r = .380, p < .001). No relationship was found between Grit 1 and GPA (r = .066, p = .485), or Grit 2 and GPA (r = .064, p = .500), or between RLS 1 and GPA (r = .017, p = .857), or RLS 2 and GPA (r = .171, p = .069). Fifty-three percent of students demonstrated a decrease in grit and 56% decreased RLS scores at the end of the first year of the program. Conclusion: The fair correlation between these variables indicates they may measure different constructs. Findings suggest that doctor of physical therapy programs should be cautious when using these non-cognitive factors in making admission decisions. Future research should explore changes in grit and RLS throughout the curricula and impact on student success.
Strategic Learning Strategies of Doctor of Physical Therapy Students

Abstract:Introduction: The use of strategic learning strategies has been positively associated with academic performance in several graduate health profession programs. This finding suggests that it may be an important construct to explore in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) education. The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) summarizes a student's perception and use of 10 learning and study strategies. Review of literature: Although the LASSI has limited reporting in DPT education, other health care education programs have shown correlation with academic performance. The purpose of this study was to examine DPT students' early perceptions of strategic learning with descriptive summaries of LASSI data and examine correlations between demographic and admissions-related data. Subjects: Matriculated DPT students (n = 294) at a 2-year hybrid program who completed the LASSI at orientation in 2020 and 2021. Methods: This was a descriptive study that retrospectively analyzed LASSI scores in entry-level DPT students. LASSI score differences among demographic groups and Spearman's rho correlations between the LASSI, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, grade point averages, grit, and emotional intelligence (EI) were explored. Results: LASSI score means were in the 50th-75th percentile (moderate category) suggesting a need for further development in strategic learning. Group differences in LASSI scores were noted for gender identity (male higher Anxiety management, P < .001; female higher Attitude, P < .001, Time Management, P = .003, and Use of Academic Resources, P = .003), racial-ethnic minoritized group (higher Self-regulation, P = .013), first-generation college students (higher Attitude, P = .047), physical therapy assistants (higher Information Processing, P = .047), students with a primary language other than English (higher Time Management, P = .046), and older students (higher Anxiety management, P = .026). Weak but significant correlations were identified between LASSI scale and component scores and several admissions variables. Highest correlations were with grit (Will, ρ = 0.319, P < .001; Concentration, ρ = 0.312, P < .001), EI (Will, ρ = 0.328, P < .001; Attitude, ρ = 0.302, P < .001; Self-regulation, ρ = 0.382, P < .001; Use of Academic Resources ρ = 0.331, P < .001), and quantitative GRE scores (Anxiety management, ρ = 0.341, P < .001). Discussion/conclusion: All LASSI scale scores and components were in the moderate category, potentially indicating a need to coach and develop strategic learning strategies. Group differences in LASSI scores may represent varied student needs. The weak relationship between LASSI scores and admissions variables could suggest that the constructs measured by LASSI are not currently captured through typical DPT admissions practices.
Model for development of outcome assessment surveys for allied health educational programs

Abstract:This article describes a model for survey development used by the Department of Physical Therapy at Saint Louis University to assess the extent to which the program prepares students for a career as physical therapists. From a review of departmental documents including mission and philosophy statements and curriculum goals, eight performance outcomes (e.g., competence as a general practitioner, leadership, ethics, attitude for service, etc.) and two program characteristics (curricuum and program atmosphere) were determined. External documents including accreditation criteria for graduate performance were also reviewed and found to be consistent with the identified characteristics. Based on these findings, items for three surveys were developed and assessed. A 1-year alumni survey solicited feedback on the graduates' perceptions of their educational preparedness for clinical practice. The graduates' employers then were surveyed for an assessment of the graduates' job performance. A 3-year alumni survey followed up to reassess the graduates' perceptions of their educational preparedness and to track the alumni's activities since graduation. Other programs in physical therapy and other health care disciplines can use this model to develop valid survey instruments to assess their program's effectiveness.

Abstract:Introduction: Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students have reported learning new behaviors, enhanced self-awareness, and personal and professional growth during their first year of DPT school. The purpose of this study was to explore in greater depth, through semistructured interviews, the student perceptions of self-identity and social identity. Subjects: Seventeen early second-year DPT students from 3 universities. Methods: This investigation is an extension of a larger multisite study. Qualitative interviews were employed to enable the use of a constructivist lens to explore the importance of personal context in participants' experiences during the first year of DPT school. Results: Students across programs shared similar characteristics and experiences. Three themes emerged: DPT students share common perceptions of themselves and classmates; sociocultural experiences shaped their actions and perceptions of self; and students recognized the need to change to be successful. The voices of the older second-career students and racially minoritized students were uniquely different from other participants. Discussion and conclusion: Doctor of Physical Therapy student experiences are similar across programs except for older students and racially minoritized students. Early professional identity formation was noted as well. A richer understanding of the personal characteristics, influential sociocultural factors, and student perceptions of self and classmates could enable educators to customize supports and educational strategies to help students understand the role their past and present experiences play in shaping their professional identities.
Content Validition and Psychometric Evaluation of the Self-efficacy and Performance in Self-management Support Instrument for Physiotherapists

Abstract:Objective: To develop and psychometrically test the Self-Efficacy and Performance in Self-Management Support instrument for physiotherapists (SEPSS-PT), based on the SEPSS-36, the corresponding instrument for nurses. Design: Instrument development including content validation and psychometric evaluation (construct validity, factor structure, and reliability). Setting: Data were collected from literature, expertmeetings, and online questionnaire PARTICIPANTS: Next to a comprehensive literature study, experts (self-management experts (n=2); physiotherapists (n=10); patients (n=6)) and physiotherapists and physiotherapy students (n=334), participated in different stages of the study. Interventions: Not applicable. Main outcome measures: Not applicable. A literature study (n=42 reviews) and consultations with physiotherapists and patients identified the specific content for physiotherapy. The Five-A's model and overarching competencies of "supportive partnership attitude", were used to structure the items. Psychometric evaluation of the draft questionnaire (40 items) was tested in a sample of 334 physiotherapists and physiotherapy students from the Netherlands, of whom 33 filled out the questionnaire twice to establish the test-retest reliability. Results: Confirmatory factor analyses revealed satisfactory fit indices for both the 6-factor model and hierarchical model, with best fit for the 6-factor model. The questionnaire discriminated between physiotherapists and physiotherapy students, and between physiotherapists who did or did not consider self-management support important. The overall internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) was high, both for the self-efficacy and the performance items. In most of the subscales, test-retest intra-class correlation coefficients for both overall self-efficacy and performance were good, but in 3 subscales insufficient for performance. Conclusion: The SEPSS-PT questionnaire is a 40-item, Likert-scaled instrument with good content and construct validity, good internal consistency and reliability, and sufficient test-retest reliability. Future research in a larger and more diverse sample could confirm stability and discriminating power.
Student Outcomes of School-Based Physical Therapy as Measured by Goal Attainment Scaling

Abstract:Purpose: The main purposes were to describe individualized outcomes of students receiving school-based physical therapy and determine if goal attainment differed by gross motor ability and age. Methods: One hundred nine physical therapists and 296 students participated. At the beginning of the school year, therapists translated students' Individualized Education Program goals into subgoals using Goal Attainment Scaling and determined students' Gross Motor Functional Classification System level. Researchers categorized goals (posture/mobility, recreation/fitness, self-care, or academics), and therapists identified students' primary goal. At the end of the school year, therapists scored the goals. Descriptive statistics and 2-way analyses of variance were conducted. Results: Students exceeded their expected goal level for primary goals and goals categorized as posture/mobility, recreation/fitness, and self-care and made progress on academic goals. No differences were found by gross motor ability. Younger students had higher goal attainment for primary and recreation goals. Conclusion: Students achieve individualized outcomes addressed by school-based physical therapy.
Learning and Study Strategies of Students in the First Year of an Entry-Level Physical Therapist Program

Abstract:Introduction: The learning and study strategies of entry-level physical therapist (PT) students may not be as effective as those needed for success in an entry-level PT education program. The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory, third edition (LASSI) is a reliable tool to assess learning and study strategies. The purpose of this study was to assess the learning and study strategies of first-year PT students and if the strategies change over the first year. Review of literature: There is little research on using the LASSI with PT students; however, the LASSI has been used with other health care professional students. Subjects: The participants (n = 211) were from 5 cohorts of PT students in their first year of an entry-level PT education program. Methods: In the first week of the curriculum the students took the LASSI in class. The results were released individually to each student. No intervention was provided. At the end of the first year, the students retook the LASSI. Paired samples t-tests were run to determine whether the 10 subtest mean percentile scores changed significantly from baseline to follow-up and how they compared to established LASSI benchmarks. Results: Six subtest scores, Anxiety, Attitude, Concentration, Information Processing, Selecting Main Ideas, and Test Strategies, showed significant changes (P ≤ .005) from baseline to follow-up. However, all subtest averages fell below the 75th percentile mark, which is reported as the threshold requiring reflection to improve skills for learning and study strategies. Discussion and conclusion: Students, on average, may not have adequate learning and study strategies when they start an entry-level PT education program. The LASSI may be an effective tool to focus resources in a timely and proactive manner for those students who may need them. Determining the resources needed earlier may decrease the need for later remediation, attrition, or licensure examination failures.
Changes in physiotherapy students' knowledge and perceptions of EBP from first year to graduation: a mixed methods study

Abstract:Background: Dedicated Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) courses are often included in health professional education programs. It is important to understand the effectiveness of this training. This study investigated EBP outcomes in entry-level physiotherapy students from baseline to completion of all EBP training (graduation). Methods: Mixed methods with an explanatory sequential design. Physiotherapy students completed two psychometrically-tested health professional EBP instruments at baseline and graduation. The Evidence-Based Practice Profile questionnaire collected self-reported data (Terminology, Confidence, Practice, Relevance, Sympathy), and the Knowledge of Research Evidence Competencies instrument collected objective data (Actual Knowledge). Focus groups with students were conducted at graduation to gain a deeper understanding of the factors impacting changes in students' EBP knowledge, attitudes, behaviour and competency. Descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, 95% CI and effect sizes (ES) were used to examine changes in outcome scores from baseline to graduation. Transcribed focus group data were analysed following a qualitative descriptive approach with thematic analysis. A second stage of merged data analysis for mixed methods studies was undertaken using side-by-side comparisons to explore quantitatively assessed EBP measures with participants' personal perceptions. Results: Data were analysed from 56 participants who completed both instruments at baseline and graduation, and from 21 focus group participants. Large ES were reported across most outcomes: Relevance (ES 2.29, p ≤ 0.001), Practice (1.8, p ≤ 0.001), Confidence (1.67, p ≤ 0.001), Terminology (3.13, p ≤ 0.001) and Actual Knowledge (4.3, p ≤ 0.001). A medium ES was found for Sympathy (0.49, p = 0.008). Qualitative and quantitative findings mostly aligned but for statistical terminology, participants' self-reported understanding was disparate with focus group reported experiences. Qualitative findings highlighted the importance of providing relevant context and positive role models for students during EBP training. Conclusions: Following EBP training across an entry-level physiotherapy program, there were qualitative and significant quantitative changes in participants' knowledge and perceptions of EBP. The qualitative and quantitative findings were mainly well-aligned with the exception of the Terminology domain, where the qualitative findings did not support the strength of the effect reported quantitatively. The findings of this study have implications for the timing and content of EBP curricula in entry-level health professional programs.
Exploring the relationship between resilience and practice education placement success in occupational therapy students

Abstract:Introduction: Practice education is a fundamental component of health professional students' education and many personal, social and professional factors impact on students' performance. This study investigated the relationship between measures of resilience and practice education performance in occupational therapy students. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was used to collect the data. In all, 149 occupational therapy students completed a self-report questionnaire comprised of demographic questions and two standardised scales: Resilience at University (RAU) and Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA). Students' practice education performance was measured by the Student Practice Evaluation Form-Revised (SPEF-R). Multi-linear regression analyses with bootstrapping were completed to identify resilience factors that were predictive of occupational therapy students' practice performance. Results: Overall, occupational therapy students reported high levels of resilience based on the RAU and RSA subscale scores. "Managing Stress," "Find Your Calling" and "Living Authentically" were strong predictors of a range of key fieldwork performance SPEF-R factors, including "Professional Behaviours," "Self-management Skills," "Co-worker Communication" and "Communication Skills." Conclusion: The resilience factors identified as being significant predictors of practice education performance outcomes in occupational therapy students represent notable findings. They suggest that students' capabilities in managing their stress levels, finding meaning in their chosen profession, and engaging self-care daily activities outside of the work environment that are meaningful, authentic and fit with one's personal values and beliefs can act as buffers against the challenges experienced by students who are completing practice education placements. The findings will assist academic and practice educators in identifying and targeting vulnerable students and strengthening resilience strategies through proactive pre-practice placement initiatives. Qualitative studies are recommended to further explore the relationship between resilience and practice education performance in occupational therapy students.
Self-Efficacy in Nursing Competencies during Students' Clinical Practicum: The Development of a Self-Assessment Scale

Abstract:The evaluation of the competencies corresponding to the different professional profiles of future nursing graduates is fundamental to their training. In this regard, students' self-evaluation must be part of their training. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically test the Perceived Self-Efficacy in Nursing Competencies (PSENC) Scale. This study was conducted in two phases: selecting and adjusting items and assessing the instrument's psychometric properties. A sample of 1416 students completed the scale online. Exploratory factor and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. Inferential analysis was carried out. The exploratory factor analysis of the PSENC scale with 20 items resulted in five factors (76.3% of variance). All factors showed Cronbach's alpha coefficients > 0.70. The confirmatory factor analysis measurement model showed satisfactory and adequate goodness-of-fit indices. The developed scale showed the psychometric adequacy and usefulness to the self-assessment of nursing students regarding their self-efficacy expectations in competencies during their clinical practicum. This study was not registered.
Teaching efficacy of undergraduate physical education students toward concepts in physical education

Abstract:Introduction: This study explored teaching efficacy for activities in physical education and how this efficacy relates to confidence and motivation in teaching physical education. Methods: Students (n = 291, M age = 20.65 years, SD = 2.72) enrolled in a physical education degree course (Bachelor of Sport Science [Physical Education] or Bachelor of Education [P-12] [Primary Physical Education]) completed two questionnaires: the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale (PETES) and Confidence and Motivation to Teach Primary Physical Education Questionnaire (CMTPPE) to measure teaching efficacy, and confidence and motivation teach physical education. Results: Participants reported lower teaching efficacy for applying scientific knowledge and teaching students with special needs, whereas they reported higher teaching efficacy for accommodating skill level differences and for instruction. Students were generally confident in management and planning in physical education, with 2nd and 3rd year students more confident than 1st year students. Intrinsic motivation for practice (to experience stimulating sensations of fun and excitement as motives for teaching physical education) and extrinsic motivation for performance (governed by rewards and restrictions by the teacher themselves) were the stronger forms of motivation for teaching physical education, whereas intrinsic motivation for knowledge (motivation teaching physical education for pleasure and satisfaction of learning new things) and disengagement (lack of motivation toward teaching physical education) were generally lower. Confidence and motivation were significantly related to teaching efficacy for most activities and confidence was more strongly related to teaching efficacy than motivation was. A path model of the relationships indicated that both year level and course influenced confidence, with confidence then influencing motivation and teaching efficacy for teaching activities in physical education. Discussion: This study has highlighted the importance of confidence to motivation and self-efficacy for teaching activities in physical education. Practical implications include the identification of areas of lower teaching efficacy in teaching physical education and the relationships between confidence, motivation and self-efficacy in teaching activities in physical education.
Beyond performance metrics: Examining a decrease in students' physics self-efficacy through a social network lens

Abstract:The Modeling Instruction (MI) approach to introductory physics manifests significant increases in student conceptual understanding and attitudes toward physics. In light of these findings, we investigated changes in student self-efficacy while considering the construct's contribution to the career-decision making process. Students in the Fall 2014 and 2015 MI courses at Florida International University exhibited a decrease on each of the sources of self-efficacy and overall self-efficacy (N = 147) as measured by the Sources of Self-Efficacy in Science Courses-Physics (SOSESC-P) survey. This held true regardless of student gender or ethnic group. Given the highly interactive nature of the MI course and the drops observed on the SOSESC-P, we chose to further explore students' changes in self-efficacy as a function of three centrality measures (i.e., relational positions in the classroom social network): inDegree, outDegree, and PageRank. We collected social network data by periodically asking students to list the names of peers with whom they had meaningful interactions. While controlling for PRE scores on the SOSESC-P, bootstrapped linear regressions revealed post-self-efficacy scores to be predicted by PageRank centrality. When disaggregated by the sources of self-efficacy, PageRank centrality was shown to be directly related to students' sense of mastery experiences. InDegree was associated with verbal persuasion experiences, and outDegree with both verbal persuasion and vicarious learning experiences. We posit that analysis of social networks in active learning classrooms helps to reveal nuances in self-efficacy development.
Outcomes of Residency Education: Insights Into the Professional Formation of the Physical Therapist Resident

Abstract:Introduction: The definition of excellence in physical therapy (PT) education is evolving, yet the role of postprofessional residency education remains uncertain. Arguments in favor of required residency have emerged through the re-visioning of PT education across the continuum. Yet, little evidence exists whether residency education further develops clinical skills, clinical knowledge, and clinical reasoning abilities. Review of literature: Previous studies have explored the development of the novice physical therapist in the first 2 years of practice; however, there is little evidence about the outcomes of PT residency education. Thus, this study looked to explore the development of learners through their residency education and to identify the critical elements of the teaching and learning environment in residency education. Subjects: Eleven PT residency programs and 13 residents participated in a qualitative study to explore the learner development through residency. Each residency program consisted of a residency program director, one or more mentors identified by the residency program director, and at least one physical therapist resident. Semistructured interviews were conducted with program participants, and journal entries were collected from residents. Methods: Using a purposeful sample of convenience, an exploratory, multiple-site/specialty area qualitative case study design was conducted. Results: Three emerging themes were identified including growth of self, becoming a member of the community of practice, and facilitation of learning through mentoring. Through the transformative journey of residency education, there are critical elements of the learning environment supporting deep learning within the community of practice. These elements include the provision of opportunities and adequate time and space for learning to occur. Discussion and conclusion: The intentional design of the community of practice through residency education facilitates the development of the novice clinician to experienced clinician in an accelerated period of time. In addition, residency graduates develop characteristics similar to adaptive learners through planned teaching and learning opportunities. Finally, the structure of residency education mattered to the resident participants such that the learning environment enhanced peer learning and the development of professional relationships.
A Social Work Education Outcome Measure: The Evaluation Self-Efficacy Scale–II

Abstract:The Evaluation Self-Efficacy (ESE) scale was designed as an outcome measure for evaluation research courses in social work. A revised version of the Social Cognitive Theory–based ESE (ESE-II) was developed and evaluated in the current study including both new and revised items. The ESE-II was evaluated in a final sample of 168 masters level students using a pretest–posttest design. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a single-factor structure underlying the 14 self-efficacy items at both assessment points. Cronbach’s alphas for the ESE-II were high at pre- and posttest. An argument underpinning content validity was developedand convergent validity was demonstrated. The ESE-II was also sensitive to change over time both at the item and scale level. The current study provides evidence supporting select psychometric properties of the ESE-II and the flexibility of self-efficacy as an outcome measure for social work education.

Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science

Abstract:Relationships have been found between teacher efficacy and many teaching and learning variables, but few researchers have examined teaching efficacy in physical education. The instrument reported here, the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale, was developed based on the teaching efficacy literature, existing scales, and National Association for Sport and Physical Education's Teacher Education Standards. Students attending 11 institutions who are majoring in regular and alternate physical education teacher education and who are at different stages of preparation (N = 592) completed the initial survey. Exploratory, followed by confirmatory, factor analysis resulted in a 35-item, 7-factor scale. Factors were Content Knowledge, which were activities one might teach; Applying Scientific Knowledge in Teaching, which reflected academic content; Accommodating Skill Differences; Teaching Students with Special Needs; Instruction, which included management, motivation, and instruction; Using Technology; and Assessment. Results support that the Physical Education Teaching Efficacy Scale addresses many aspects of teaching physical education and meets research criteria for validity and reliability.

Effectiveness of Using a Self-Directed Learning Program to Teach Physical Examination and Health Assessment Skills: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:Background: Conducting health assessments and physical examinations are essential skills for independent practice. Exploring how to teach these skills effectively is essential. Purpose: This study was designed to validate the effectiveness of a self-directed learning program in improving nursing student outcomes in terms of their learning health assessment and physical examination skills. Method: A quasi-experimental design was used, and second-year nursing students enrolled in a health assessment and physical examination course at a university of science and technology in central Taiwan were recruited using purposive sampling. Both the control and experimental groups were taught using a traditional teaching method. The experimental group additionally participated in a self-directed learning program. Structured questionnaires, including the Chinese version of the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale, Scales of Motivation and Learning Strategies, Interpersonal Skills Assessment Tool, the Course Satisfaction Evaluation Scale, and the Perception of Health Assessment and Physical Examination Competence Scale, were used to collect data at three time points. Results: After controlling for the effects of pretest scores, after the intervention, the experimental group achieved significantly higher scores than the control group for self-directed learning (creative learning and love of learning), learning motivation (goal orientation, work value, expected success, and test anxiety), and cognitive strategies (total score, elaboration strategy, recitation strategy, and monitoring strategy). In addition, the health assessment exercise improved interpersonal and communication skills, and learning satisfaction was significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group. Conclusions/implications for practice: A physical examination and health assessment course designed using the self-directed learning framework can effectively improve student competence in related skills to enhance their ability to assess patient health problems in clinical settings. This study presents an alternative approach to teaching health assessment and physical examination courses and validates the positive effect of this approach on student learning outcomes.

Abstract:Medical students experience emotional challenges during their undergraduate education, often related to work-based learning. Consequently, they may experience feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt, which can negatively affect their well-being. Therefore, it is crucial to support students' development of their ability to manage distressful situations. Self-efficacy beliefs may be a central aspect of supporting them in this development, and have been shown to relate to resilient factors such as students' motivation, learning, and well-being.

Student perceptions of assessment and student self-efficacy in competence-based education

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the interplay between student perceptions of competence-based assessment and student self-efficacy, and how this influences student learning outcomes. Results reveal that student perceptions of the form authenticity aspect and the quality feedback aspect of assessment do predict student self-efficacy, confirming the role of mastery experiences and social persuasions in enhancing student self-efficacy as stated by social cognitive theory. Findings do not confirm mastery experiences as being a stronger source of self-efficacy information than social persuasions. Study results confirm the predictive role of students’ self-efficacy on their competence outcomes. Mediation analysis results indicate that student’s perceptions of assessment have an indirect effect on student’s competence evaluation outcomes through student’s self-efficacy. Study findings highlight which assessment characteristics, positively influencing students’ learning, contribute to the effectiveness of competence-based education. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are indicated.

Training physiotherapy students to educate patients: A randomised controlled trial

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a training intervention on physiotherapy students' self-efficacy and skills in the area of patient education.METHODS: Final year physiotherapy students were randomised to an intervention group or a wait-list control group. The intervention group participated in a 3.5h training intervention about patient education that included video observation, simulated patient practice and structured feedback. The control group did not receive any training. Self-efficacy was assessed at baseline (T1) and after the intervention (or no intervention for the control group) (T2). Patient education performance was assessed by a blinded rater from a video-recorded standardised clinical examination.RESULTS: 83 students were randomised to the intervention group and 81 students to the control group. There were no differences in demographic variables or self-efficacy between groups at baseline. There was significant improvement in self-efficacy for the intervention group, but no change for the control group. The intervention group performed significantly better than the control group for nine of the eleven performance items, with significantly higher scores overall.CONCLUSION: A training intervention enhances physiotherapy student self-efficacy and performance in patient education.PRACTICE IMPLICATION: Use of patient education training is recommended to enhance student self-efficacy and performance.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) is becoming increasingly encouraged in healthcare. However, a lack of consensus exists in how IPE should be provided. The research at hand examines changes in self-efficacy and self-esteem in 132 nursing, dietetic, physician assistant, and social work students when participating in a critical care simulation. The simulation focused on a septic patient requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation.METHOD: This quantitative, repeated measures and correlational study utilized the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to examine a possible relationship between self-efficacy and self-esteem. In addition, exploration of changes in self-efficacy and self-esteem after participating in the cardiopulmonary simulation was conducted.RESULTS: There was a statistically significant medium, positive correlational relationship between self-efficacy and self-esteem in healthcare students participating in a cardiopulmonary resuscitation simulation (p<0.001). Healthcare students did not experience statistically significant gains in self-efficacy and self-esteem (p>0.05). During debriefing, students expressed experiencing role confusion when working with each other.CONCLUSION: More IPE experiences, including in mock code simulations, is necessary to enhance communication, collaboration, and prevent role confusion.HIGHLIGHTS:More interprofessional education is necessary to prevent role confusionSelf-efficacy and self-esteem have a positive correlation in IPE critical care simulationHealthcare students did not have significant gains in self-efficacy and self-esteem
