Abstract:An empirical test of the Herzberg methodology and two-factor theory was carried out using several comparable sets of data collected from the same subjects. The protocol methodology (story-content analysis) used by Herzberg and many replications was utilized twice, at six-week intervals. Ranking of factor importance and motivator—hygiene identification by the subjects also provided data sets. The results failed to support the Herzberg methodology as a reliable measure of job satisfaction or the two-factor theory as valid. Greater differences were found between motivator/motivator and hygiene/hygiene sequence comparisons than between motivator/hygiene comparisons.
