Abstract:According to the Brazilian Association of the Pet Industry, the pet business is expanding and moves the world economy, where USA and China lead the ranking in terms of income. Brazil has the third largest pet population in the world, being 7th in the ranking. Along with the heating of the “pet business”, emerges the need for animal healthcare, expanding the opening of busyness such as: Pet shops, clinics and Veterinary Hospitals (VH). Considering that Health Service Waste (HSW) are highly polluting, the present paper aims to identify the state of art on the management of solid waste generated in Veterinary Hospitals as well as challenges, risks and opportunities. For that, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was carried out using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology and the VOSviewer software. As a result, it was possible to identify some situations, the main one being: inefficiency in waste management at the segregation stage due to the mixture of infectious and non-infectious materials and the risk of contamination by improper handling. Opportunities were also listed, such as improvement in energetic efficiency; reduction in water consumption; reduction in waste production; development of recycling programs; discussion and elaboration of appropriate and sustainable practices; reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases; and the elaboration of Health Service Waste Management Plan (HSWMP), specific for Veterinary Hospitals. The implementation of an internal audit system, as well as the use of management tools such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and fault-tree analysis (FTA) were also indicated by the studies analyzed.
