Abstract:This paper critically examines the Ramsey model's role in elucidating long-term economic growth amidst significant exogenous challenges like Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. It dissects the model's core principles, including constant returns to scale, knowledge spillover effects, innovation benefits, and the pivotal role of saving and investment in driving endogenous growth. The study delves into the model's mathematical structure, emphasizing the dynamics of consumption, capital accumulation, and the equilibrium paths crucial for stable economic progression. Additionally, it contrasts theoretical predictions with real-world data, particularly analyzing the UK's GDP trends post-Brexit and during the pandemic. The paper scrutinizes how these events influence trade, knowledge transfer, and public health and technology investment, and evaluates the influence of public policy on long-term growth, focusing on aspects like research and development funding, public goods provision, and tax system structuring to foster investment. Ultimately, this paper aims to enhance understanding of the Ramsey model's ability to address the complex interplay between endogenous mechanisms and external factors in shaping economic development trajectories.
