Abstract:Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of integrated Turkish and science activities in the preschool period on children's environmental perception. Materials and Methods: A mixed-method approach was used in the research. In the qualitative dimension of the mixed method, a phenomenological design was employed, while in the quantitative dimension, a quasi-experimental design was used. The sample of the study consists of 20 children, with 10 children in the experimental group and 10 children in the control group. As the first stage of the experimental procedure, children in both the experimental and control groups were asked to draw an environment picture, and one-on-one interviews were conducted with the children regarding their drawings. The drawings were evaluated using a Draw An Environment Test-Rubric (DAET-R) and were attempted to be transformed into qualitative form with yellow and blue color tones. Additionally, the children's rubric scores were transferred to the SPSS 23 package program, and necessary analyses were conducted. In the implementation part of the study, nine integrated Turkish and science activities were applied to the experimental group over a period of nine weeks. A different illustrated children's book was used in each activity, and the activities were developed within the framework of these books. The control group, on the other hand, continued with the daily educational routines included in the preschool education program. As the final stage of the experimental part, children in both the experimental and control groups were asked to draw another environment picture, and one-on-one interviews were conducted with the children regarding their drawings. Findings: In the final tests of the experimental group, there was an increase in figures related to the environment in the drawings. It was found that the final test drawings of the children in the experimental group were related to the illustrated books used in the integrated activities. Significant differences were detected in the final tests of the experimental and control groups through statistical tests. Key Points: As a result of the study, it was determined that the change in environmental perception of the children in the experimental group, where integrated Turkish and science activities developed with illustrated children's books were applied, progressed more prominently compared to the children in the control group.

Abstract:Education programs are learning experiences that take place with planned activities offered to the individual and contribute to the upbringing of people in society and the realization of goals related to them. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the environmental awareness education program applied to preschool children on children's environmental awareness. The study group of the research consisted of a total of 41 children, 20 children in the control group and 21 children in the experimental group, who were studying in kindergarten classes affiliated to the Ministry of National Education and had not participated in any environmental education program before. This study has a pre-test post-test control group experimental design. According to this design, the application of the pre-test, the application of the environmental awareness education program and the application of the post-test are carried out respectively. "Personal information form" and "Environmental awareness scale for children" were used as data collection tools in the study. The data were analyzed with SPSS statistical package program. According to the findings of the study, it was found that the environmental awareness education program was effective on the environmental awareness of preschool children.

In the research, “Children’s Environmental Attitudes Scale” was used in the experiment group, before and after application and the data obtained were compared. Abstract:Abstract To achieve an effective Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), teachers should possess appropriate sustainability attitudes to transmit those values to their future students. In this article, a holistic educational intervention around the ecofeminist movement is described and its impact on the sustainability attitudes of 188 pre-service teachers is assessed. The quantitative results with a validated questionnaire reveal an initial high level of sustainability awareness and a statistically significant increase in the environmental dimension after the educational intervention. In addition, the qualitative analysis of the stories and activities for children prepared by the students in a process of didactic transposition confirms their ability to effectively integrate different competencies around a topic. Due to their status as future educators in the early stages of the system, pre-service teachers are relevant to disseminate a holistic view of ESD and we can conclude that ecofeminism is a thematic node that integrates key concept and attitudinal content to achieve that goal.

Abstract:Environmental problems nowadays pose threats to the sustainability of environment, such as global warming, urban air pollution, water scarcity, environmental noise, and biodiversity loss. The root cause of those problems is human behavior. Inspiring the interest of preschoolers is crucial in their future cognition of the environment. This research discussed the influence of parent-child reading on the children’s environmental interest. It also integrated environmental education into the learning process of preschoolers more comprehensively and continuously. A questionnaire was used for data collection and the data were analyzed using Smart PLS 2.0. The results show that personality trait, visual attention, and expression of ideas have statistical significance in terms of the children’s learning attitude. The picture book designed in this study can improve the pro-environmental behavior after parent-child reading. Abstract:Education for sustainable development is one of the key components of the 2030 Agenda. Previous research emphasizes the importance of access to education as early as possible in accordance with the goals and contents of sustainable development. It is assumed that educational policies have incorporated education for sustainable development (ESD) into key documents regulating the early childhood education (ECE), although the existence of legislation is not a guarantee that the practice follows the educational policy. Preschool teachers are key persons who can integrate content that promotes and encourages acceptance of the concept of sustainability into the ECE setting. In order to determine ECE teachers' understanding of the concept of sustainability and contents that promote a sustainable lifestyle, an empirical study with a qualitative approach was conducted, where 91 ECE teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia participated. The participants presented their views on the socio-cultural, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability, as well as gave many practical examples that, in their view, promote a sustainable lifestyle. They evaluated the efficacy of the researched segments of sustainability as well. Deductive content analysis was used for the analysis of the ECE teachers' answers. In order to get a real image of sustainability in ECE practices, responses were coded using the SOLO Taxonomy and the OMEP ESD Rating Scale. The empirical study showed that ECE teachers often understand sustainability differently from that described in educational policy documents but also pointed to creative approaches to implementation.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between pre-service early childhood teachers’ environmental education self-efficacy beliefs and their attitudes towards sustainable environment. This research was conducted with a total of 129 pre-service early childhood teachers in a public university of Ankara, Turkey. To collect the data of pre-service teachers’ attitudes toward sustainable environment, Sustainable Environment Attitude Scale (SEAS) was employed. Besides, Environmental Education Self-Efficacy Scale (EESS) was used to identify pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs about environmental education. To analyze the data, independent sample t-test analysis was conducted for comparison of groups. Moreover, one-way analysis of variances (ANOVA) was executed for contrasting groups in terms of grade level. Lastly, the Pearson’s correlation was employed to investigate the relationship between environmental education self-efficacy beliefs and sustainable environment attitudes. Results showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between pre-service teachers’ environmental education self-efficacy beliefs and their attitudes toward sustainable environment.Bu çalışmanın amacı okul öncesi öğretmen adaylarının çevre eğitimi öz-yeterlik inanışları ve sürdürülebilir çevreye karşı tutumları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Araştırmanın örneklemini Ankara’da devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim görmekte olan 129 öğretmen adayı oluşturmaktadır. Öğretmen adaylarının sürdürülebilir çevreye karşı tutumlarını ölçmek için Sürdürülebilir Çevre Tutum Ölçeği, çevre eğitimi öz-yeterlik inanışlarını ölçmek için ise Çevre Eğitimi Öz-Yeterlik Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın analizinde grupları karşılaştırmak için bağımsız örneklerim t testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) kullanılmıştır. Pearson korelasyon analizi ile çevre eğitimi öz-yeterlik inanışları ve sürdürülebilir çevreye karşı tutumları arasındaki ilişkiye bakılmıştır. Verilerin analizi sonucunda, öğretmen adaylarının çevre eğitimi öz-yeterlik inanışları ve sürdürülebilir çevreye karşı tutumları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmıştır.
The Environment and Its Place in Children's Picture Story Books

Abstract:Children receive many messages about real world concepts from picture story books. In Turkey, there is not enough research and literature about the available picture story books which include environmental themes, concepts and motifs. The aim of this research is to examine the environmental themes in picture story books, for 2-12 year-old children, published in Turkey. Quantitative research methods were used in this descriptive study. Eighty picture story books published between 1995 and 2010 were selected and evaluated. A Book Review Form developed by the researchers was used to evaluate the books. According to the analysis results, in general, 80 percent of the books have the environment theme as a main topic in their contents. These books, in particular, contain topics on tidiness (7.5 percent), seasons (3.8 percent), nature and nature concepts (22.5 percent) and the importance of the water (2.5 percent). Environment related concepts were found in picture books for ages six and over; the main figures in the books were animals and humans. As a result of the study, it is recommended that preschool children's picture story books should have environmental concepts as well.

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of in-service education designed to improve early childhood teachers’ environmental awareness, knowledge, attitudes and their skills on integrating environmental issues in their teaching. Thirty early childhood teachers in the treatment group and Thirty in the control group participated the study. Teachers in the control group did not attain in-service education. Teachers responded to the Environmental Problems Attitude Scale (EPAS) before and after the in-service education. After the education process, teachers in the treatment group provided qualitative data about the impact of this education. For the treatment group the Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significant increase from pretest to posttest. Mann-Whitney U did not indicate a significant increase for the control group. Three major themes derived from qualitative data. These are an increase in environmental awareness, an increase in individual responsibility and taking action, as well as increased motivation and being better equippedfor environmental education.

Abstract:The world has entered the era of Industry Revolution 4.0, which is characterized by the advancing development of science. The ease of accessing information is increasing along with the development of science. Education can be a solution to the problems of life. Education can change a person's behavior in a more positive direction. Learning in the 4.0 era utilizes technology to facilitate the learning process. The advantage of using technology is that it makes it easier to access information without boundaries of space and time. The use of technology can be applied to compiling and developing teaching materials in the form of electronic books. Improving the quality of learning is prioritized in core activities so that appropriate learning models are needed to support learning activities. The learning model that can be used is the guided inquiry learning model. Guided inquiry can be used as learning models. This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of Green School Oriented Guided Inquiry-Based Science E-Book. This research was used Plomp development model. The product in the form of a guided inquiry-based science e-book was tested on 31 class VIII students of Junior high school 17 Padang. Based on the results of the research and the explanation of the discussion, we can conclude that guided research-based e-books with green school orientation are effective in improving the environmental literacy of junior high school students. This is reflected in the value of knowledge, and learners' attitudes towards the environment are increasing.
Perspectives and attitudes towards sustainability among science, preschool, and primary school teachers

Abstract:The concept of sustainability has been gaining momentum in recent years as people are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental, social, and economic challenges facing the world. Sustainability is a complex issue that requires a multidisciplinary approach and long-term perspective. This study aimed to examine the perceptions and attitudes of science, primary school, and preschool teachers toward sustainability. The study involved 299 public school teachers, who were asked to complete a series of scales and questions to gauge their views on sustainability and sustainable development. The findings of this study indicate that preschool teachers take a more holistic approach to sustainability education, emphasizing the need to teach sustainability as a lifestyle and calling for improved teacher training in this area. On the other hand, primary school teachers placed greater emphasis on raising awareness of sustainability rather than inducing basic behavioral changes in children. Science teachers were more focused on acquiring knowledge and concepts related to sustainability. Overall, the study suggests that the effective implementation of sustainability education requires supporting materials and resources, and the support of school administration and families.

Abstract:In this study, the impact of the Environmental and Climate Change Education program on the perceptions of 4th-grade students regarding environmental issues, climate change, and sustainability was investigated. The study group consisted of 22 (12 boys, 10 girls) 4th-grade students aged between 9–10 years, who were all studying in the same class at a central primary school in Eskişehir. Conducted throughout the 2022–2023 academic year, the research was carried out in three stages: before the implementation, after the implementation, and 9 months after completing the program. Data were obtained through drawings created by the students and interviews based on these drawings. Initially, the students' drawings depicted basic concepts such as air, water, trees, and waste. However, after participating in the Climate Change Education program, significant changes were observed in their understanding and perceptions of environmental issues, climate change, and sustainability. The activities of the program significantly increased the students' awareness and comprehension of these critical issues.

Abstract:One of the most important tasks of societies to maintain sustainable development is to ensure that children develop a positive attitude towards the environment and have knowledge about it. In early childhood, it is believed that the attitudes of children towards the environment and the values they learn will form the basis of the desired behaviors in their future lives. The comprehensive presentation of the studies in the area of pre-school environmental education is important in terms of presenting ideas to the teachers who will train children on this subject and to the researchers who will work in this field. The aim of this study is to review research carried out on environmental education in the pre-school period in Turkey between the years of 2012-2022. The study was conducted within the framework of descriptive content analysis. When the objectives of the studies were examined, it was seen that they mostly sought to understand attitudes towards the environment. Participants in the study were primarily pre-service teachers. It has been determined that scales were frequently employed as a data gathering instrument in studies that are generally carried out using the survey method. From this point of view, it is clear that majority of the studies are based on the quantitative approach. Quantitative approaches are mostly used to specify a universe's attributes. Quantitative approaches also display to reveal how the subject is distributed according to one or more variables. On the other hand, it is possible to propose that qualitative research methodologies be incorporated into the studies in order to provide in-depth information and providing a rich data source regarding the examined issue.
Effect of environmental education program implemented with university student participation on secondary school students' environmental attitude

Abstract:Study aimed to increase university students' sensitivity and the environmental attitudes of secondary school students through environmental education program. It was planned as quasi-experimental research. The first phase was completed with five fourth-year students who took Social Awareness Course at a university's nursing department in Turkey. In second phase, sample consisted of 264 5th-grade students studying at Secondary School in Black Sea Region. University students implemented Environmental Education Program for secondary school students for four weeks. Mean environmental attitude scale score of 5th-grade students before education was 2.79 ± 0.32, and after education was 3.51 ± 0.41. A statistically significant difference was determined between mean total scale scores of university and 5th-grade students before and after education (p ˂ 0.05). It was determined that environmental sensitivity of university students and environmental attitudes of secondary school students were at medium level before Environmental Education Program and high level after education.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to reveal the attitude levels of prospective teachers, who are the teachers of the future, about sustainable environmental education. This study is a quantitative research based on survey design. 471 prospective teachers studying in different departments of the Education Faculty of a university in Black Sea region participated in the study. The data were collected from prospective teachers studying at the departments of Science Teaching, Mathematics Teaching, Preschool Teaching, Primary School Teaching and Social Sciences Teaching. All of the prospective teachers were reached through an online form and 471 participants were reached as a result of the participation of volunteering students. “Sustainable Environmental Education Attitude Scale” was used in the study. SPSS 22.0 package program was used in the analysis of data. As a result of data analysis, it was found that prospective teachers who were studying at the department of Science Teaching, those who were members of non-governmental organizations related with the environment, and those who followed printed or online publications and female prospective teachers had higher attitudes towards environmental education. According to the results obtained, it may be an effective solution to provide education to prospective teachers about sustainable environment and to add more courses in the curriculum on these topics.

Abstract:Education plays a crucial role in fostering numerous established and sustainable behaviors in individuals. Among these behaviors, environmental awareness is particularly important because of its significant sociological impact. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of values education on environmental awareness and pro-environmental behavior. This study employs a mixed-method approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The quantitative part of this research consists of 225 eighth-grade students and the qualitative part consists of six Turkish teachers. As a result of the quantitative analysis, it was found that the environmental attitude levels of the middle school students participating in this study were at a high level. In the qualitative analysis, it was found that the teachers participating in this study established a strong connection between mother tongue education, values education, and environmental education. The outcomes from the qualitative and quantitative analysis were discussed in depth and compared with the results previously presented in the literature. Additionally, the findings of this study indicated opportunities for future research as presented in the Discussion Section.

Abstract:This study investigated the environmental attitudes of preschool teachers in relation to various factors including their educational background, city of residence, age, seniority, and gender. The findings reiterate the importance of environmental education in shaping positive environmental attitudes, as teachers with a robust environmental education background showcased more favorable views on the environment. Conversely, factors like place of residence, age, and seniority did not significantly influence environmental attitudes. The results also indicate that there was no differentiation in environmental attitudes based on gender. These findings emphasize the importance of instilling a comprehensive environmental education for educators, who play a pivotal role in shaping the environmental perceptions of the younger generation. Despite its invaluable insights, the study is limited by its geographical scope and potential omission of influential variables. Future research should expand its parameters and delve into deeper qualitative inquiries.

Abstract:This research explores how picturebooks can enhance ecocritical awareness and sustainable attitudes among 97 primary school children aged 8–9 in a Spanish school. The study includes 24 reading sessions in three formats: individual, small group, and adult-mediated. The selection of the corpus for children's readings aligns with theoretical studies focusing on an ecocritical approach to children's literature, a scholarly perspective that has gained prominence in recent decades. Results indicate that adult-mediated sessions are more effective than individual or small-group readings, fostering greater emotional and cognitive engagement. While students generally showed an ecocentric perspective, an anthropocentric view of sustainability persisted. The study highlights that, although guided reading is beneficial, a more integrated and multidimensional educational approach is needed to cultivate a regenerative consciousness. The educator's role is crucial for guiding students toward deeper, more meaningful ecocritical understanding.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the effects of environmental education given by creative drama method on 5-6 year old children on environmental awareness of children. The study, which has a mixed model in which qualitative and quantitative methods are used, has a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The study was carried out with a total of 26 children. The data were collected by using “Environmental Scale for Children” and by drawing pictures. As a result of the analyses of t-test, a significant difference in favour of the experimental group was found between the two groups (t= -7,676, p<.05). It has been determined that environmental education given by drama method has a positive effect on children's environmental awareness. The content analysis method was used for the analysis of pictures drawn by children at the end of the sessions. It was found that children reflected the importance of trees/forests, living things relation, importance of air and water in their pictures. Article visualizations:

Abstract:There is significant global concern with current environmental problems, yet people's behaviour towards the environment has been resistant to change. Young people have the opportunity to bring about desirable changes through environmental behaviours and attitudes. The goal of this study is to better understand the scope of nature relatedness as an attribution interacting with pro-environmental behaviours for Turkish pre-service early childhood teachers. We examined the associations between the domains representing nature relatedness and also sought to identify any differences in nature relatedness with respect to their year of enrolment in a teacher education program. The participants were 402 students attending an Early Childhood Teacher Education Program at one of the two public universities in the capital of Turkey. A Turkish-adapted version of the Nature Relatedness Scale developed by Nisbet, Zelenski, and Murphy was administered to gather the data. Participants were found to have a mostly positive external nature-related worldview. Furthermore, the statistical analysis indicated non-significant differences in their nature relatedness with respect to the year of enrolment in the teacher education program. In terms of the relationships between the constructs representing nature relatedness, the internalized identification with nature was positively correlated with two constructs which refer to his/her physical familiarity as well as attraction to nature, and how individual's relationship with the environment is provoked by his/her behaviour. This research indicates that pre-service teachers, who are regarded as important agents for the future implementation of sustainability education, are actually lacking in their nature relatedness constructs and need to develop key competencies in a field that presupposes that they have already acquired sufficient experience of physical and emotional interaction with nature.
