ACCULTURATION PROCESS IN MODERN CINEMATOGRAPHY (ON THE MATERIALS OF THE FEATURE FILM “MERIGOLD HOTEL: THE BEST OF THE EXOTIC” (2011)
Abstract:Summary. The article focuses on the sociocultural phenomenon of acculturation, which leads to the interac- tion of autonomous cultural systems caused by long-term contacts of groups with different cultural patterns. It is noted that the modern socio-cultural space is constantly changing due to the annual "great resettlement of peoples", which in turn gives rise to many "cultural contacts". The latter encourage the assimilation of a new culture in terms of value orientations, normative field, role behavior, social attitudes at both individual and group levels. Increasing social mobility in the globalized world actualizes acculturation processes that take place in various social, economic, political, and cultural contexts. Modern cinema, which vividly demonstrates cross-cultural immersion in the world, remains informative from the standpoint of understanding acculturation processes. Thus, acculturation changes in the behavior of emigrants, represented by a group of English pensioners, were analyzed using the materials of the film "Marigold Hotel: the best of the exotic". The situation of mutual influence of two polar cultures, British (moderately formal, monochronic, low-contextual, individu-alistic) and Indian (hierarchical-formal, polychronic, highly contextual, collectivistic) and Indian (hierarchi-cal-formal, polychronic, highly contextual, collectivistic) is considered. Relying on the theoretical and meth-odological work of the psychologist J. Berry, the attitudes of acculturation adopted by retired emigrants were rethought: integration, separation, assimilation, marginalization. It has been proven that, under the condition of identification of the individual with both his own and foreign culture, there is a position of integration. If the individual loses his cultural identity and abstracts from the new one, then we get a strategy of marginalization. The option, when a person maintains his own cultural identity and rejects (denies) someone else's, he adheres to the position of separation. And finally, the next alternative – the individual fully accepts another cultural identity, renouncing his own, then he is a supporter of the assimilation strategy. The main characters of the mentioned film demonstrate the highest level of acculturation (adaptation), who have chosen the attitude of integration, so they are able to blend into the culturally significant Indian environment. At the same time, the article outlines the types of adaptive results: psychological and sociocultural. Good mental health, psycholog- ical well-being, achievement of personal satisfaction in a new cultural context are the results of psychological adaptation. Instead, the acquisition of appropriate social skills and behavior is the key to effective social and cultural adaptation. Attention is focused on "culture shock" or the shock of the transition experienced by elder-ly people in the process of adaptation to a foreign cultural environment.
