Abstract:Due to industrialization and urbanization, toxic and harmful contaminants released from industries are disposed of into nearby soil. The migration of these pollutants through the soil, facilitated by water flow, adversely impacts human health and plant growth and contributes to ecological imbalance. Several studies have attempted to retard the contaminant transport in such polluted soils to reduce environmental impact. This study investigates the efficacy of a novel material, Nano-Calcium Silicate (NCS), in the encapsulation of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in enhancing the sorption potential of a high-plasticity soil. Two different dosages of 0.5% and 1% NCS are considered for soil amendment. To check the efficacy of heavy metal encapsulation in soil, the soil is washed using two potent chelating agents, citric acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), at molar concentrations of 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5. The results revealed that the sorption potential of raw soil is enhanced by NCS addition, and the highest sorption of 1.92 mg/g is observed for Cd2+ in NCS-amended soil at the initial contaminant concentration of 100 mg/L. After the desorption test, Cd2+ displays the lowest leaching potential of 3.8–5.2%, and it is further enhanced by 28–30% after NCS amendment. Thus, contaminant encapsulation by NCS amendment serves as a potential treatment technique for plastic soil to reduce environmental toxicity.
