Abstract:The 20thcentury witnessed an augmentation in agricultural production, mainly through the progress and use of pesticides, fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus, and developments in plant breeding and genetic skills. In the naturally existing ecology, rhizospheric soils have innumerable biological living beings to favor the plant development, nutrient assimilation, stress tolerance, disease deterrence, carbon seizing and others. These organisms include mycorrhizal fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes, etc. which solubilize nutrients and assist the plants in up taking by roots. Amongst them, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have key importance in natural ecosystem, but high rate of chemical fertilizer in agricultural fields is diminishing its importance. The majority of the terrestrial plants form association with Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (VAM) or Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). This symbiosis confers benefits directly to the host plant’s growth and development through the acquisition of Phosphorus (P) and other mineral nutrients from the soil by the AMF. They may also enhance the protection of plants against pathogens and increases the plant diversity. This is achieved by the growth of AMF mycelium within the host root (intra radical) and out into the soil (extra radical) beyond. Proper management of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi has the potential to improve the profitability and sustainability of agricultural systems. AM fungi are especially important for sustainable farming systems because AM fungi are efficient when nutrient availability is low and when nutrients are bound to organic matter and soil particles.

Abstract:Mycorrhizae, a symbiotic association between fungal hyphae and plant roots, play a crucial role in achieving sustainable development goals in natural farming by enhancing soil structure, nutrient uptake, and plant growth. Arbuscular Mycorrhizae (AM) and Ectomycorrhizae are often encouraged in no-tillage systems and conservation agriculture. Mycorrhizal fungi, particularly within the rhizolive consortium, are shown to improve soil fertility, water retention, heavy metal degradation, and disease resistance. They assist in nutrient cycling, especially phosphorus, and contribute to soil aggregation through the secretion of Glomalin-Related Soil Proteins (GRSP). The use of AM fungi in pest and disease management, land rehabilitation, and bioremediation is highlighted, emphasizing their potential in sustainable agriculture. The paper also outlines methods for the mass production of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Fungi as biofertilizers, including soil-less culture, carrier-based inoculum, and hairy root culture techniques. Certain agronomic practices and modifications in the existing land management practices by multiple cropping systems rather than mono-cropping to deliberately improve the resource use efficiency and soil organic carbon dynamics through this symbiotic relationship in enhancing soil health, plant productivity, and ecological balance in farming systems.

Abstract:Plants collaborate with many micro-organisms in the rhizosphere to form mutualistic associations. One of the best examples is the mycorrhizal symbio sis between plants and fungi. Here, fungi support plants with mineral nutri ents and other services and the fungi, in turn, receive photosynthates from the autotrophic plants. Mycorrhizal associations are common in almost all eco systems and 80 % of all land plants associate with these mutualistic soil fungi. There is an increasing awareness among biologists, ecologists and mycolo gists that mycorrhizal associations need to be considered in order to under stand the ecology and evolution of plants, plant communities and ecosystems. In the last decade, many advances and breakthroughs have been made in mycorrhizal ecology. We aim to summarise these advances in this Volume, with special emphasis given to the ecological function of the mycorrhizal symbiosis. This Volume is divided into six sections. The first section gives an intro duction to the mycorrhizal symbiosis and discusses the progress that has been made in understanding the ecological function of this association. The second section deals with the eco-physiology of mycorrhizal plants. It also covers the influence of global changes on the symbiosis. The third section dis cusses the influences of mycorrhizal fungi on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. It also discusses factors that influence the diversity and structure of mycorrhizal fungal communities. The fourth section shows the multi trophic nature of the mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Abstract:The coevolution of mycorrhizae with plants represents a major evolutionary adaptation to the land environment. As a bioinoculant, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a beneficial role in sustainable agriculture by symbiotically associating with many crop plants. In this review, we primarily focus on the nutritional and non-nutritional functionality of AMF in soil and plant productivity. AMF maintain soil quality and health via three aspects: soil structure, plant physiology, and ecological interactions. These lead plants to increase their functionality, further growth, and productivity. The formation of soil aggregates via glomalin production maintains the soil structure. Physiologically, AMF change nutrient acquisition and thereby increase soil fertility and productivity. Biotic (pathogens and weed plants) and abiotic (salinity, drought, extreme temperature, soil pH, and heavy metals) stress alleviation is also achieved via altering a plant's physiological status. By serving as a biocontrol agent, AMF negatively interact with plant pathogens. As a result of beneficial interactions with other rhizosphere microorganisms and above-ground organisms, AMF induce a synergistic effect on plant performance. Moreover, they are also involved in land restoration and seedling establishment. The collective effect of all these functions positively influences overall plant performance and productivity.

Abstract:Mycorrhizal fungi establish symbiotic associations with roots of ~80% of plant families and have an important role in sustaining plant growth and soil health. This chapter explores the diverse roles of mycorrhizal fungi in mediating soil ecosystem services and improving soil health, including aggregate formation, remediation of soil heavy metals and reclamation of degraded soils, soil organic matter (SOM) formation, nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. The chapter also looks at the ways mycorrhizae can alleviate both abiotic stresses such as nutrient deficiency and biotic stresses such as disease.

Abstract:Mycorrhizal fungi form mutualistic relationships with the majority of terrestrial plants, influencing nutrient uptake, soil structure, plant growth, and ecosystem functioning. The diverse types of mycorrhizal associations, including arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), ectomycorrhizae (ECM), ericoid mycorrhizae (ERM), and orchid mycorrhizae (ORM), each contributing uniquely to plant health and soil ecosystems. Mechanisms of interaction, such as fungal colonization, nutrient exchange, signaling pathways, and carbon allocation, underscore the complexity and significance of these symbioses. Mycorrhizal fungi enhance ecosystem functioning by improving nutrient cycling-particularly the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles-stabilizing soils, and increasing plant stress tolerance. Case studies in agricultural systems demonstrate how mycorrhizal inoculation can improve crop yields and soil health, while natural ecosystems illustrate their role in supporting biodiversity and resilience. In restoration ecology, mycorrhizal fungi aid in the recovery of degraded lands, enhancing plant establishment and soil stability. Urban and industrial landscapes also benefit from mycorrhizal associations, which support vegetation in challenging environments. Despite advancements, significant knowledge gaps and technological limitations persist, particularly regarding the ecological specificity of mycorrhizal fungi and their interactions within the soil microbiome. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary approaches and integrating mycorrhizal research into policy and management practices. Abstract:Mycorrhizae (“fungus roots”) are mutualistic symbiotic associations between fungi and plants. Mycorrhizal association was found to be established between Ordovician and Devonian period. Mycorrhizal association is present in almost all ecosystems with a high degree of host specificity. About 40,000–50,000 fungal species form mycorrhizal association with nearly about 250,000 plant species. There are different types of mycorrhizal associations, namely, arbuscular mycorrhiza (71%), ectomycorrhiza (2%), orchid mycorrhiza (10%), ericoid mycorrhiza (1.4%), non-mycorrhizal association (7%), and habitat- and nutritional-dependent association (8%). These symbiotic associations play a key role in evolution of land plants in reducing and harsh environment at that time. These symbiotic associations provide up to 80% of N and P and also help in plant growth and fitness. There are a number of scientific evidences which have suggested that mycorrhizal fungi not only improve crop yield but also increase antioxidants, vitamins, and essential trace elements in plants. Additionally, various researchers around the globe have investigated the effect of mycorrhizal fungi on production of secondary metabolites. Furthermore, application of mycorrhizal fungi is presently reaching to an industrial stage supported by widespread applied researches and marketable applications emphasizing an eco-friendly and sustainable aspects.

Abstract:Plant roots associate with diverse microbes (including bacteria, fungi, archaea, protists, and viruses) collectively called the root-associated microbiome. Among them, mycorrhizal fungi colonize host roots and improve their access to nutrients, usually phosphorus and nitrogen. In exchange, plants deliver photosynthetic carbon to the colonizing fungi. This nutrient exchange affects key soil processes, the carbon cycle, and plant health and therefore has a strong influence on the plant and microbe ecosystems. The framework of nutrient exchange and regulation between host plant and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi has recently been established. The local and systemic regulation of mycorrhizal symbiosis by plant nutrient status and the autoregulation of mycorrhizae are strategies by which plants maintain a stabilizing free-market symbiosis. A better understanding of the synergistic effects between mycorrhizal fungi and mycorrhizosphere microorganisms is an essential precondition for their use as biofertilizers and bioprotectors for sustainable agriculture and forestry management.

Abstract:Summary Mycorrhizal symbioses between plants and fungi are vital for the soil structure, nutrient cycling, plant diversity, and ecosystem sustainability. More than 250 000 plant species are associated with mycorrhizal fungi. Recent advances in genomics and related approaches have revolutionized our understanding of the biology and ecology of mycorrhizal associations. The genomes of 250+ mycorrhizal fungi have been released and hundreds of genes that play pivotal roles in regulating symbiosis development and metabolism have been characterized. rDNA metabarcoding and metatranscriptomics provide novel insights into the ecological cues driving mycorrhizal communities and functions expressed by these associations, linking genes to ecological traits such as nutrient acquisition and soil organic matter decomposition. Here, we review genomic studies that have revealed genes involved in nutrient uptake and symbiosis development, and discuss adaptations that are fundamental to the evolution of mycorrhizal lifestyles. We also evaluated the ecosystem services provided by mycorrhizal networks and discuss how mycorrhizal symbioses hold promise for sustainable agriculture and forestry by enhancing nutrient acquisition and stress tolerance. Overall, unraveling the intricate dynamics of mycorrhizal symbioses is paramount for promoting ecological sustainability and addressing current pressing environmental concerns. This review ends with major frontiers for further research.

Abstract:Inhabiting the interface between plant roots and soil, mycorrhizal fungi play a unique but underappreciated role in soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics. Their hyphae provide an efficient mechanism for distributing plant carbon throughout the soil, facilitating its deposition into soil pores and onto mineral surfaces, where it can be protected from microbial attack. Mycorrhizal exudates and dead tissues contribute to the microbial necromass pool now known to play a dominant role in SOM formation and stabilization. While mycorrhizal fungi lack the genetic capacity to act as saprotrophs, they use several strategies to access nutrients locked in SOM and thereby promote its decay, including direct enzymatic breakdown, oxidation via Fenton chemistry, and stimulation of heterotrophic microorganisms through carbon provision to the rhizosphere. An additional mechanism, competition with free-living saprotrophs, potentially suppresses SOM decomposition, leading to its accumulation. How these various nutrient acquisition strategies differentially influence SOM formation, stabilization, and loss is an area of critical research need.

Abstract:Agriculture is the fundamental element among humans which leads to crop productivity and stability of the environment. Cutting edge techniques open doors to new dimensions of the research into soil microbiomes to find new ways to explore worthy resources. Microbiome explicitly has an uplifting role in host interaction. Mycorrhizal associations in particular have a remarkable innovation toward agricultural sustainability. Among them, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are surged above all other associations of host–microbiome interaction. Although it primarily depends upon gene manipulation and its expression of both host and associated microbe, AMF has an imperative role in controlling the pathogenic stress and plant growth advancement, viz., synthesis of essential secondary metabolites along with vital antioxidants that have a splendid impact on promoting plant growth and making a nutrient-rich rhizosphere. AMF symbiosis ameliorates myriad biotic and abiotic stresses ranging from salinity, drought (which leads to ROS stress), nutrient scarcity and heavy metal toxification which are highly lethal to plant’s health and productivity. However, there is a need to unravel the function of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and peculiarities to overcome combine stresses. An eco-friendly approach is the need of time, such as the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, for better yield and production. However, future studies are being focused on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi-mediated preferment of crop quality.

Abstract:Agriculture is new paradigm, sustainable intensification, focuses back on beneficial soil microorganisms for their role in reducing chemical fertilizer and pesticide input and improving plant nutritional and health.More research has been done on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) because they form symbiotic relationships with the root systems of most land plants and make it easier for plants to absorb nutrients by creating extraradical networks of hyphae that spread out from colonized roots into the soil and serve as supplemental absorbents.Plants are protected from abiotic and biotic factors by AMF, and they also contribute in modulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes and secondary metabolites (phytochemicals), including polyphenols, anthocyanins, phytoestrogens and carotenoids.The employment of AMF symbionts to enhance the nutritional and medicinal value of active food items has come under more and more scrutiny in studies.Despite the wide physiological and genetic diversity of plant species, only a few AMFs have been used, thus limiting their full exploitation.This review study concentrates on the results of AMF on plant secondary substance biosynthesis that can improve health, as well as the standards for choosing the best symbionts to be utilized as sustainable biotechnological instruments to create food that is healthy and safe.The main objectives of the articlewas to examine the role AMF plays in improving soil's physical, biological and chemical properties. Regarding the information gaps found in this review, a discussion of potential future research is given. This will improve our understanding of AMF, encourage additional study, and aid in maintaining soil fertility.

Abstract:Mycorrhization in trees impacts ecological and physiological dynamics of a forest ecosystem. Mycorrhization has been an integral part of plants since colonization by the early land plants. Over decades, substantial research has highlighted its potential role in improving nutritional efficiency and growth, development and survival of crop plants. However, the focus of this review is trees. Evidence have been provided to explain ecological and physiological significance of mycorrhization in trees. Advances in recent technologies (e.g., metagenomics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, agricultural drones) may open new windows to apply this knowledge in promoting tree growth in forest ecosystems. Dual mycorrhization relationships in trees and even triple relationships among trees, mycorrhizal fungi and bacteria offer an interesting physiological system to understand how plants interact with other organisms for better survival. Besides, studies indicate additional roles of mycorrhization in learning, memorizing and communication between host trees through a common mycorrhizal network (CMN). Recent observations in trees suggest that mycorrhization may even promote tolerance to multiple abiotic (e.g., drought, salt, heavy metal stress) and biotic (e.g. fungi) stresses. Due to the extent of physiological reliance, local adaptation of trees is heavily impacted by the mycorrhizal community. This knowledge opens the possibility of a non‐GMO avenue to promote tree growth and development. Indeed, mycorrhization could impact growth of trees in nurserys and subsequent survival of the inoculated trees in field conditions. Future studies might integrate hyperspectral imaging and drone technologies to identify tree communities that are deficient in nitrogen and spray mycorrhizal spore formulations on them.

Abstract:Experiences worldwide reveal that degraded lands restoration projects achieve little success or fail. Hence, understanding the underlying causes and accordingly, devising appropriate restoration mechanisms is crucial. In doing so, the ever-increasing aspiration and global commitments in degraded lands restoration could be realized. Here we explain that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) biotechnology is a potential mechanism to significantly improve the restoration success of degraded lands. There are abundant scientific evidences to demonstrate that AMF significantly improve soil attributes, increase above and belowground biodiversity, significantly improve tree/shrub seedlings survival, growth and establishment on moisture and nutrient stressed soils. AMF have also been shown to drive plant succession and may prevent invasion by alien species. The very few conditions where infective AMF are low in abundance and diversity is when the soil erodes, is disturbed and is devoid of vegetation cover. These are all common features of degraded lands. Meanwhile, degraded lands harbor low levels of infective AMF abundance and diversity. Therefore, the successful restoration of infective AMF can potentially improve the restoration success of degraded lands. Better AMF inoculation effects result when inocula are composed of native fungi instead of exotics, early seral instead of late seral fungi, and are consortia instead of few or single species. Future research efforts should focus on AMF effect on plant community primary productivity and plant competition. Further investigation focusing on forest ecosystems, and carried out at the field condition is highly recommended. Devising cheap and ethically widely accepted inocula production methods and better ways of AMF in situ management for effective restoration of degraded lands will also remain to be important research areas.

Abstract:Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) are obligate biotrophs living in symbiotic association with roots of plants. They are among the most widespread soil microorganisms that provide the host plant with nutrients and pathogen protection. Modern farming practices like frequent tillage, high input inorganic fertilization and pesticide along changing climatic conditions due to global warming, have huge impacts on AMF colonization, interaction with plants and on crop productivity. AMF positively affect the plant tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, harsh ecosystems and plant pathogens by altering root structure, exudation, rhizosphere microflora, production of antifungals, antibacterials, and competing with pathogens for nutrient uptake. Thus, it plays a significant role in plant growth, productivity and quality. Further, the effect of a fungicide is varied depending on its mode of action and the associated AMF species, suggesting that these fungi have a strong potential as a tool for eco-friendly sustainable farming in the present scenario of global warming.

For a long period the knowledge of the microbial populations in the rhizosphere has been limited, because they have always been studied by traditional culture-based techniques. These methods, which only allow the study of cultured microorganisms, do not allow the characterization of most organisms existing in nature. The introduction in the last few years of methodologies that are independent of culture techniques has bypassed this limitation. This together with the development of high-throughput molecular tools has given new insights into the biology, evolution, and biodiversity of mycorrhizal associations, as well as, the molecular dialog between plants and fungi. The genomes of many mycorrhizal fungal species have been sequenced so far allowing to better understanding the lifestyle of these fungi, their sexual reproduction modalities and metabolic functions. The possibility to detect the mycelium and the mycorrhizae of heterothallic fungi has also allowed to follow the spatial and temporal distributional patterns of strains of different mating types. On the other hand, the availability of the genome sequencing from several mycorrhizal fungi with a different lifestyle, or belonging to different groups, allowed to verify the common feature of the mycorrhizal symbiosis as well as the differences on how different mycorrhizal species interact and dialog with the plant. Here, we will consider the aspects described before, mainly focusing on ectomycorrhizal fungi and their interactions with plants and other soil microorganisms.

Socialism in soil? The importance of mycorrhizal fungal networks for facilitation in natural ecosystems

Abstract:1. Almost all plants are engaged in symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi. These soil fungi can promote plant growth by supplying limiting nutrients to plant roots in return for plant assimilates. 2. Many mycorrhizal fungi are not host specific and one fungal individual can colonize and interconnect a considerable number of plants. The existence of these so‐called mycorrhizal networks implies that fungi have the potential to facilitate growth of other plants and distribute resources among plants irrespective of their size, status or identity. In this paper, we explore the significance of mycorrhizal fungal networks for individual plants and for plant communities. 3. We address the following questions: (i) are all plant species benefitting from mycorrhizal networks, (ii) is benefit dependent on the size or age of a plant, (iii) is fungal support related to the relative dominance of plants in a community, (iv) are there host dependent barriers and physiological constraints for support and (v) what is the impact of mycorrhizal networks on plant–plant interactions and plant community dynamics? Moreover, using a review of published studies, we test whether mycorrhizal networks facilitate growth of small seedlings that establish between or near larger plants. 4. We found 60 cases where seedling species were grown together with larger plants with or without mycorrhizal fungal networks. Mycorrhizal networks promoted seedling growth in 48% of the cases (for 21 seedling species), while negative effects (25%) and no effects (27%) were also common. Seedlings associating with ectomycorrhizal fungi benefitted in the majority of the cases while effects on seedlings associating with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were more variable. Thus, the facilitative effects of mycorrhizal fungal networks depend on seedling species identity, mycorrhizal identity, plant species combinations and study system. We present a number of hypothetical scenarios that can explain the results based on cost–benefit relationship of individual members in a network. 5. Synthesis. Overall, this review shows that mycorrhizal networks play a key role in plant communities by facilitating and influencing seedling establishment, by altering plant–plant interactions and by supplying and recycling nutrients.

Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are symbiotic organisms that form intimate relationships with host plants by developing intracellular structures called arbuscules within root cortical cells. They are vital to natural ecosystems, offering a range of ecological benefits. They enhance the uptake and transfer of essential nutrients, influence the composition of fungal and bacterial communities in the soil, and improve soil texture and structure. They also strengthen plant resilience by mitigating the effects of salinity, drought, extreme temperatures, pathogens, pests, and weeds. They support plant defense mechanisms through the production of antimicrobial compounds, induction of defense-related biomolecules, and activation of resistance genes. This article provides a thorough review of recent research on the interactions between plant nutrients and AMF. It explores key mechanisms in nutrient uptake, and examines the morphological, biochemical, and molecular changes in plants colonized by AMF. Additionally, the article discusses AMF's crucial role in alleviating biotic stress. By shedding light on these aspects, the review identifies research gaps and suggests future directions. Harnessing AMF's potential can reduce dependence on agrochemicals and promote a more sustainable agricultural system.
