Abstract:Background The family of NAC proteins (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) represent a class of large plant-specific transcription factors. However, identification and functional surveys of NAC genes of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) remain unstudied, despite the tomato genome being decoded for several years. This study aims to identify the NAC gene family and investigate their potential roles in responding to Al stress. Results Ninety-three NAC genes were identified and named in accordance with their chromosome location. Phylogenetic analysis found SlNACs are broadly distributed in 5 groups. Gene expression analysis showed that SlNACs had different expression levels in various tissues and at different fruit development stages. Cycloheximide treatment and qRT-PCR analysis indicated that SlNACs may aid regulation of tomato in response to Al stress, 19 of which were significantly up- or down-regulated in roots of tomato following Al stress. Conclusion This work establishes a knowledge base for further studies on biological functions of SlNACs in tomato and will aid in improving agricultural traits of tomato in the future.
The Abiotic Stress-Responsive NAC Transcription Factor SlNAC11 is Involved in Drought and Salt Response in Tomato ( Solanum Lycopersicum L.)

Abstract:Plant-specific NAC (NAM/ATAF/CUC) transcription factors play crucial roles in diverse development processes as well as biotic and abiotic stress responses. Nevertheless, to date only few reports regarding stress-related NAC genes are available in tomato. In this study, we isolated an abiotic stress-responsive NAC gene from tomato, here designated as SlNAC11. Expression analysis revealed that SlNAC11 was induced significantly by dehydration, cold, and heat. The functions of SlNAC11 in abiotic stress were further detected on SlNAC11-RNAi transgenic tomato plants. The results showed that SlNAC11-RNAi plants became less tolerant to drought and salt stress, which were demonstrated by lower level of chlorophyll content and seed germination rate, and higher level of MDA as compared to WT plants under stress conditions. Furthermore, transgenic seedlings exhibited less hypersensitive to ABA, demonstrated by longer hypocotyl and root as compared to WT plants. These results show that SlNAC11 functions as a stress-responsive transcription factor depicting positive response to abiotic stress tolerance and may hold promise for improving stress tolerance in transgenic tomato.

Abstract:The NAC transcription factor family participates in responses to various kinds of environmental stimuli in plants. Responses of NAC genes to abiotic stresses have been widely studied, but their functions in response to biotic stress are little reported in plants, especially in crops. In the present study, we examined the functions of a novel tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) NAC protein (SlNAC35) in abiotic and biotic stress resistance by using transgenic tobacco. Expression analysis found that SlNAC35 expression was induced by drought stress, salt stress, bacterial pathogen, and signaling molecules, suggesting its involvement in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stimuli. Moreover, transgenic lines exhibited a greater number of lateral roots and longer root length compared with Vec lines (empty vector lines) after drought and salt treatment. These results indicate that overexpression of SlNAC35 promoted root growth and development under drought and salt stresses. Higher expressions of NtARF1, NtARF2 and NtARF8 were observed under drought and salt stresses in transgenic lines, suggesting that overexpression of SlNAC35 promoted growth and development of roots in transgenic lines possibly by involving auxin signaling and by regulating NtARF expression. In addition, SlNAC35 overexpression improved resistance to bacterial pathogen in transgenic tobacco, and reactive oxygen species may be in the upstream of salicylic acid (SA) signaling in transgenic tobacco during defense response.
Molecular and Functional Characterization of ShNAC1, an NAC Transcription Factor from Solanum Habrochaites.

Abstract:NAC transcription factors (TFs) are important regulators of plant adaptation to abiotic stress. In this study, we functionally characterized an NAC TF, ShNAC1, from Solanum habrochaites. ShNAC1 was up-regulated by drought, cold, and salt stresses, and it displayed lower expression at the late stage of stress treatments than its orthologous gene in S. lycopersicum. Overexpression of ShNAC1 in tomato resulted in reduced cold, drought, and salt tolerance. Additionally, ShNAC1 displayed the highest expression in senescent leaf, and overexpressing ShNAC1 accelerated salt- and dark-induced leaf senescence. ShNAC1 was located in the nucleus without transactivation activity. RNA-seq analysis revealed that 81% (190 out of 234) differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) showed down-regulation in the transgenic line L2 compared with wild-type, suggesting that ShNAC1 may function as a transcriptional repressor. Among these down-regulated DEGs, many were involved in stress responses, such as SlHKT1;1, SlMAPKKK59, SlJA2, SlTIL, SlALDH2B1, etc. Noticeably, one ACS gene and three ACO genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis were up-regulated, while seven ERF genes in the ethylene signal transduction pathway were down-regulated in the transgenic lines, respectively. Our results suggested that ShNAC1 negatively regulates tolerance to abiotic stress in tomato probably by modulating the ethylene biosynthesis and signal transduction pathways.
SlNAC6, A NAC transcription factor, is involved in drought stress response and reproductive process in tomato

Abstract:Tomato plants are susceptible to drought stress, but the mechanism involved in this process still remains poorly understood. In the present study, we demonstrated that SlNAC6, a nuclear-localized protein induced by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) stress treatment, plays a positive role in tomato plant response to PEG stress. Down-regulation of SlNAC6 (SlNAC6-RNAi) resulted in a semidwarf phenotype, and the SlNAC6-RNAi lines showed reduced tolerance to PEG stress, exhibiting a higher water loss rate and degree of oxidative damage, as well as lower values of proline content and antioxidant enzyme activity, when compared with those in wild type (WT). In contrast, overexpression of SlNAC6 (SlNAC6-OE) leads to a significant delay of growth, and the SlNAC6-OE lines showed greatly enhanced tolerance to PEG stress concomitant with a lower water loss rate and degree of oxidative damage, as well as higher values of proline content and antioxidant enzyme activity. Further study showed that the transcription level of ABA signaling-related genes and the ABA content are respectively decreased or increased in SlNAC6-RNAi and SlNAC6-OE seedlings, as verified by multiple physiological parameters, such as stomatal conductance, water loss rate, seed germination, and root length. Moreover, overexpression of SlNAC6 can accelerate tomato fruit ripening. Collectively, this study demonstrates SlNAC6 exerts important roles in tomato development, drought stress response, and fruit ripening processes, some of them perhaps partly through modulating an ABA-mediated pathway, which implies SlNAC6 may hold the potential applications in improving agronomic traits of tomato or other Solanaceae crops.
Manipulation of the Transcription Factor SlNAC1 for Improved Tolerance to Abiotic Stress in Tomato

Abstract:The tomato transcription factor SlNAC1 plays an important role in abiotic stress response and is fine-tuned at both transcriptional and posttranslational levels. The SlNAC1 gene is strongly induced by multiple abiotic stresses and the SlNAC1 protein is subjected to ubiquitin proteasome-mediated degradation. We found here that SlNAC1 possesses two distinct transactivation domains (TADs), TAD1 and TAD2. Significantly, the instability of SlNAC1 was attributed to the acidic amino acid-rich TAD1, in which the instability and transcriptional potential of TAD1 functionally overlapped; whereas the glutamine-rich TAD2 was stable and accounted for the abiotic stress signalling mediated by SlNAC1. Towards the goal of enhanced tolerance to abiotic stress in tomatoes, we manipulated SlNAC1 at both gene and protein levels: we generated a stable and functional SlNAC1 mutant SlNAC1( increment 191-270) by removing TAD1 and further engineered it to be stress-controllable by fusing the corresponding cDNA with the abiotic stress-inducible promoter Pro(StNAC1). Transgenic tomato plants expressing the Pro(StNAC1)::SlNAC1( increment 191-270) transgene did not display any undesired traits and exhibited enhanced tolerance to cold, drought and salt stresses. Taken together, our manipulation of the stress-related transcription factor via conditional expression of its derived stable and functional mutant provides a successful example for developing crops dynamically adapted to abiotic stress.
NtNAC053, A Novel NAC Transcription Factor, Confers Drought and Salt Tolerances in Tobacco.

Abstract:The NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) family acts as one of the largest families of the transcription factor in the plant kingdom and was revealed to function as the important regulators in various environmental stresses. However, a few studies were reported about the biofunctions of the NAC transcription factor in tobacco. In the current study, we characterized a novel NAC transcription factor encoding the gene NtNAC053 in tobacco, which was significantly up-regulated when exposed to salt and drought treatments. The results of cis-acting elements analysis suggested that the promoter region of NtNAC053 gene possesses a number of stress-responsive elements, and this gene could be induced by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Moreover, the NtNAC053–GFP fusion protein was localized in the cell nucleus and possessed a transactivation domain in its C-terminal, implying that NtNAC053 may undertake as a transcriptional activator in tobacco. Notably, the overexpression of NtNAC053 in tobacco resulted in hypersensitivity to ABA treatment. Furthermore, these overexpression lines showed significantly enhanced tolerances to drought and salt stresses. Under salt and drought stresses, these overexpression lines possessed higher superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) activities. Interestingly, the expressions of putative stress-related genes, including NtCOR15A, NtRAB18, NtDREB1A, NtERF5, NtKAT2, and NtERD11, were up-regulated in these overexpression lines when subjected to salt and drought stresses. The clues provided in our study suggested that the NtNAC053 gene encodes a novel NAC transcription factor and could confer the drought and salt stress tolerances by inspiring the downstream stress-responsive genes and antioxidant system in tobacco.

Abstract:The NAC family transcription factor has demonstrated its importance in plant development and environmental stress response. Based on the microarray results under salt stress and EST information, the full-length cDNAs of two salt-inducible NAC-family genes ( SlNAC1 , SlNAM1 ) were isolated from a salt tolerant tomato cultivar, Edkawi, using Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends (RACE). SlNAC1 and SlNAM1 encoded 301 and 296 amino acids, respectively, and the deduced protein sequences contained the typical domain of NAC-family transcription factors. Tissue expression profile analysis using semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed that SlNAC1 was expressed mainly in root, flower and green fruit; transcripts of SlNAM1 were detected in all tested tissues except for root, and high-level expression was detected in flower and matured tomato fruit. Both SlNAC1 and SlNAM1 were induced by salt stress in Edkawi , while the expression pattern was different in a salt-sensitive cultivar, ZS-5. Phylogenetic analysis for putative NAC-family peptides available in the tomato genome indicated a wide diversity of this gene family. Results obtained in the present study suggest that both SlNAC1 and SlNAM1 might play important roles in tomato stress tolerance.

Abstract:NAC ( N AM/ A TAF1/2/ C UC2) transcription factors comprise a large plant-specific gene family and play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. However, only little information regarding development- or stress-related NAC genes is available in tomato. In this study, six tomato NAC genes, designated as SlNAC5 - SlNAC10 , were characterized to encode NAC proteins that share high similarity with those known plant NACs, especially in the NAC domain. These SlNAC genes, except SlNAC10 , have a conserved exon–intron structure despite their different intron length. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that SlNAC5, SlNAC7, and SlNAC10 may belong to the development-related NACs. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis revealed that the six SlNACs exhibited different tissue-specific (such as roots, leaves, and flowers) expression profiles, suggesting that they may have crucial and diverse roles during tomato growth and development. Varying degrees of induction were detected in the transcript level of these SlNACs except SlNAC6 when treated with multiple hormones including ABA, ACC, GA 3 , MeJA, and IAA. The expression of SlNAC5 - SlNAC10 was also checked under various abiotic stresses including NaCl, wounding, dehydration, and high/low temperature; six SlNAC s were induced by these stresses with differential/similar induction levels. SlNAC5 was the most induced gene by NaCl stress with a 950-fold induction. Collectively, the results in this study of tissue-specific and/or stress-responsive SlNAC genes provide valuable information for further exploring the functional roles of NAC genes during tomato development and in response to environmental stresses, and one or more of them may hold promise for improving stress tolerance in transgenic tomato.
TaNAC29, a NAC Transcription Factor from Wheat, Enhances Salt and Drought Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis

Abstract:BACKGROUND:NAC (NAM, ATAF, and CUC) transcription factors play important roles in plant biological processes, including phytohormone homeostasis, plant development, and in responses to various environmental stresses.METHODS:TaNAC29 was introduced into Arabidopsis using the Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated floral dipping method. TaNAC29-overexpression plants were subjected to salt and drought stresses for examining gene functions. To investigate tolerant mechanisms involved in the salt and drought responses, expression of related marker genes analyses were conducted, and related physiological indices were also measured. Expressions of genes were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).RESULTS:A novel NAC transcription factor gene, designated TaNAC29, was isolated from bread wheat (Triticum aestivum). Sequence alignment suggested that TaNAC29 might be located on chromosome 2BS. TaNAC29 was localized to the nucleus in wheat protoplasts, and proved to have transcriptional activation activities in yeast. TaNAC29 was expressed at a higher level in the leaves, and expression levels were much higher in senescent leaves, indicating that TaNAC29 might be involved in the senescence process. TaNAC29 transcripts were increased following treatments with salt, PEG6000, H2O2, and abscisic acid (ABA). To examine TaNAC29 function, transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing TaNAC29 were generated. Germination and root length assays of transgenic plants demonstrated that TaNAC29 overexpression plants had enhanced tolerances to high salinity and dehydration, and exhibited an ABA-hypersensitive response. When grown in the greenhouse, TaNAC29-overexpression plants showed the same tolerance response to salt and drought stresses at both the vegetative and reproductive period, and had delayed bolting and flowering in the reproductive period. Moreover, TaNAC29 overexpression plants accumulated lesser malondialdehyde (MDA), H2O2, while had higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities under high salinity and/or dehydration stress.CONCLUSIONS:Our results demonstrate that TaNAC29 plays important roles in the senescence process and response to salt and drought stresses. ABA signal pathway and antioxidant enzyme systems are involved in TaNAC29-mediated stress tolerance mechanisms.
The SlNAC8 gene of the halophyte Suaeda liaotungensis enhances drought and salt stress tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract:NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2 and CUC) transcription factors play an important role in resisting abiotic stress in plants. In this study, a novel NAC gene, designated SlNAC8 from Suaeda liaotungensis K. was characterized. SlNAC8 protein is localized in the nucleus, and the yeast one-hybrid screening showed that it contains an activation domain in its C-terminus and functions as a transcriptional activator. Gene expression analysis revealed that it is induced by drought and salt stress. Arabidopsis plants overexpressing SlNAC8 demonstrated enhanced tolerance to drought and salt stress, showing significant advantages in seed germination, root growth, shoot growth, and survival rate compared with controls. Moreover, transgenic plants had a significantly higher proline concentration, antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase), and level of chlorophyll fluorescence than wild-type, and a significantly lower malondialdehyde concentration and electrolyte leakage under drought and salt stress. The overexpression of SlNAC8 in transgenic plants also enhanced the expression of stress-responsive genes such as RD20, GSTF6, COR47, RD29A, RD29B, and NYC1. In summary, SlNAC8, as a transcription factor, may change the physiological-biochemical characteristic of plants by regulating the expression of stress-responsive genes and enhance the drought and salt stress tolerance of plants. SlNAC8 can be utilized for developing drought and salinity tolerance in crop plants through genetic engineering.
Transcriptomic and Genetic Approaches Reveal an Essential Role of the NAC Transcription Factor SlNAP1 in the Growth and Defense Response of Tomato.

Abstract:With global climate change, plants are frequently being exposed to various stresses, such as pathogen attack, drought, and extreme temperatures. Transcription factors (TFs) play crucial roles in numerous plant biological processes; however, the functions of many tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) TFs that regulate plant responses to multiple stresses are largely unknown. Here, using an RNA-seq approach, we identified SlNAP1, a NAC TF-encoding gene, which was strongly induced by various stresses. By generating SlNAP1 transgenic lines and evaluating their responses to biotic and abiotic stresses in tomato, we found that SlNAP1-overexpressing plants showed significantly enhanced defense against two widespread bacterial diseases, leaf speck disease, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) DC3000, and root-borne bacterial wilt disease, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. In addition, SlNAP1 overexpression dramatically improved drought tolerance in tomato. Although the SlNAP1-overexpressing plants were shorter than the wild-type plants during the early vegetative stage, eventually, their fruit yield increased by 10.7%. Analysis of different hormone contents revealed a reduced level of physiologically active gibberellins (GAs) and an increased level of salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in the SlNAP1-overexpressing plants. Moreover, EMSAs and ChIP-qPCR assays showed that SlNAP1 directly activated the transcription of multiple genes involved in GA deactivation and both SA and ABA biosynthesis. Our findings reveal that SlNAP1 is a positive regulator of the tomato defense response against multiple stresses and thus may be a potential breeding target for improving crop yield and stress resistance.
A Transcription Factor SlNAC4 Gene of Suaeda liaotungensis Enhances Salt and Drought Tolerance through Regulating ABA Synthesis

Abstract:The NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2 and CUC2) transcription factors are ubiquitously distributed in plants and play critical roles in the construction of plant organs and abiotic stress response. In this study, we described the cloning of a Suaeda liaotungensis K. NAC transcription factor gene SlNAC4, which contained 1450 bp, coding a 331 amino acid. We found that SlNAC4 was highly expressed in stems of S. liaotungensis, and the expression of SlNAC4 was considerably up-regulated after salt, drought, and ABA treatments. Transcription analysis and subcellular localization demonstrated that the SlNAC4 protein was located both in the nucleus and cytoplasm, and contained a C-terminal transcriptional activator. The SlNAC4 overexpression Arabidopsis lines significantly enhanced the tolerance to salt and drought treatment and displayed obviously increased activity of antioxidant enzymes under salt and drought stress. Additionally, transgenic plants overexpressing SlNAC4 had a significantly higher level of physiological indices. Interestingly, SlNAC4 promoted the expression of ABA metabolism-related genes including AtABA1, AtABA3, AtNCED3, AtAAO3, but inhibited the expression of AtCYP707A3 in overexpression lines. Using a yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) assay, we identified that the SlNAC4 transcription factor could bind to the promoters of those ABA metabolism-related genes. These results indicate that overexpression of SlNAC4 in plants enhances the tolerance to salt and drought stress by regulating ABA metabolism.
Identification and expression pattern of one stress-responsive NAC gene from Solanum lycopersicum

Abstract:NAC (for N AM, A TAF1, 2, and C UC2) family genes have been found to play an important role in diversified developmental processes and environmental responses. A new NAC-type transcription factor SlNAC3 was primarily identified and isolated from the cDNA libraries of tomato cultivar Ailsa Craig. It contains three exons and two introns within genomic DNA sequence and encodes a polypeptide of 329 amino acids. A plant-specific and conserved NAC domain is located in the N-terminus of SlNAC3. The protein SlNAC3 is subcellularly localized in the nucleus of onion epidemical cells and it has a transcriptional activation domain in the C-terminal region which shows extremely divergent among NACs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that SlNAC3 belonged to the OsNAC3 subgroup of the NAC protein family. Tissue expression profile analysis revealed that SlNAC3 was expressed mainly in flower, fruit and root. The transcription expression of SlNAC3 was inhibited by salt, drought stress and ABA treatment. These data demonstrate that SlNAC3 might interact with environmental and endogenous stimuli and probably function when plants response to salt and drought stresses through ABA signaling pathways as a transcriptional activator.

Abstract:Salt stress can seriously reduce crop yield and quality, causing huge economic losses. Identification and functional of salt stress regulator could provide us a way to improve plants tolerance to salt stress. The HD-ZIP II subfamily is plant-specific transcription factors, plays a crucial role in plant development and abiotic stress. In this study, we analyzed the expression profiling of all HD-ZIP II members response to salt, drought, high temperature and cold stress using publicly accessible transcriptome data, and identified a novel salt stress negative regulator SlABIG1 in tomato. Under salt stress, knockout of SlABIG1 significantly improved the salt tolerance of tomato, with higher chlorophyll content and photosynthetic capacity, root dry weight and proline; decreased the accumulation of ROS, MDA and Na+. Collectively, our results revealed that SlABIG1 plays a key role in tomato tolerance to salinity stress and provide a candidate novel gene to create salt-tolerant tomato varieties in future.
Improved salt tolerance in transgenic tobacco by over-expression of poplar NAC13 gene

Abstract:Background: NACs are one of the major transcription factor families in plants which play an important role in plant growth and development, as well as in adverse stress responses. Methods: In this study, we cloned a salt-inducible NAC transcription factor gene (NAC13) from a poplar variety 84K, followed by transforming it into both tobacco and Arabidopsis. Results: Stable expression analysis of 35S::NAC13-GFP fusion protein in Arabidopsis indicated that NAC13 was localized to the nucleus. We also obtained five transgenic tobacco lines. Evidence from morphological and physiological characterization and salt treatment analyses indicated that the transgenic tobacco enhanced salt tolerance, suggesting that NAC13 gene may function as a positive regulator in tobacco responses to salt stress. Furthermore, evidence from yeast two-hybrid screening demonstrated that NAC13 protein functions as a transcriptional activator, with an activation domain located in the C-terminal region. Discussion: NAC13 gene plays an important role in response to salt stress in tobacco. Future studies are needed to shed light on molecular mechanisms of gene regulation and gene networks related to NAC13 gene in response to salt stress, which will provide a valuable theoretical basis for forest genetic breeding and resistant breeding.

A Transcription Factor SlNAC10 Gene of Suaeda liaotungensis Regulates Proline Synthesis and Enhances Salt and Drought Tolerance

Abstract:The NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) transcription factors are one of the largest families of transcription factors in plants and play an important role in plant development and the response to adversity. In this study, we cloned a new NAC gene, SlNAC10, from the halophyte Suaeda liaotungensis K. The gene has a total length of 1584 bp including a complete ORF of 1107 bp that encodes 369 amino acids. The SlNAC10-GFP fusion protein is located in the nucleus and SlNAC10 has a transcription activation structural domain at the C-terminus. We studied the expression characteristics of SlNAC10 and found that it was highest in the leaves of S. liaotungensis and induced by drought, salt, cold, and abscisic acid (ABA). To analyze the function of SlNAC10 in plants, we obtained SlNAC10 transgenic Arabidopsis. The growth characteristics and physiological indicators of transgenic Arabidopsis were measured under salt and drought stress. The transgenic Arabidopsis showed obvious advantages in the root length and survival rate; chlorophyll fluorescence levels; and the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) activities, and the proline content was higher than that of the wild-type (WT) Arabidopsis, whereas the relative electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were lower than those of the wild-type Arabidopsis. We explored the regulatory role of SlNAC10 on proline synthesis-related enzyme genes and found that SlNAC10 binds to the AtP5CS1, AtP5CS2, and AtP5CR promoters and regulates their downstream gene transcription. To sum up, SlNAC10 as a transcription factor improves salt and drought tolerance in plants possibly by regulating proline synthesis.

Abstract:NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2, and CUC2) proteins play critical roles in many plant biological processes and environmental stress. However, NAC proteins from Tamarix hispida have not been functionally characterized. Here, we studied a NAC gene from T. hispida, ThNAC13, in response to salt and osmotic stresses. ThNAC13 is a nuclear protein with a C-terminal transactivation domain. ThNAC13 can bind to NAC recognized sites and calmodulin-binding NAC (CBNAC) binding element. Overexpression of ThNAC13 in Arabidopsis improved seed germination rate and increased root growth and fresh weight gain under salt or osmotic stress. Transgenic T. hispida plants transiently overexpressing ThNAC13 and with RNAi-silenced ThNAC13 were generated for gain- and loss-of-function experiments. Following exposure to salt or osmotic stress, overexpression of ThNAC13 induced superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities, chlorophyll and proline contents; decreased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde levels; and reduced electrolyte leakage rates in both transgenic Tamarix and Arabidopsis plants. In contrast, RNAi-silenced ThNAC13 showed the opposite results in transgenic Tamarix. Furthermore, ThNAC13 induced the expression of SODs and PODs in transgenic Arabidopsis. These results suggest that ThNAC13 improves salt and osmotic tolerance by enhancing the ROS-scavenging capability and adjusting osmotic potential.
