Abstract:AbstractBound states in the continuum represent a captivating and significant phenomenon in the realms of photonics, materials science, and quantum mechanics. These exceptional resonant states have emerged as crucial elements in a diverse array of nanotechnology applications including chiral nanophotonics. Applying bound states in the continuum for chiral applications is a challenging problem and usually requires some additional complicated steps such as multi‐layer lithography, adding superstrate with index matching materials and geometry parameters adjusting. Nevertheless, creating a structure placed in inhomogeneous background that is capable to perfectly convert one circular polarization to the opposite one is still a challenging problem. This work presents chiral metasurface based on bound states in the continuum allowing to achieve perfect unitary circular conversion in an inhomogeneous environment. This approach is based on a coupling of two chiral but not perfect resonances which makes it possible to get one mode with chiral dichroism value of 1. A theoretical model is built, perform numerical calculation and conduct an experimental verification to prove this concept. The presented results could find many applications in sensing, optics, telecommunications, biomedical and chemical analysis.
High Q chiroptical responses with maximum chirality in all-dielectric metasurface driven by quasi bound states in the continuum

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces have attracted great attentions as their great potential for diverse applications requiring chiral light-matter interactions. Recent, boosted by the mechanism based on the concept of bound states in the continuum (BICs), high Q factor chiroptical resonances have been exhibited by breaking inversion symmetries of planar metasurfaces. However, optical chirality of these chiral metasurfaces is generally intolerable to the structural geometries, especially the geometric asymmetry. Here, we present novel chiral quasi-BIC with strong optical chirality in all-dielectric metasurface. By simultaneously breaking the in-plane C2 rotational and mirror symmetries, the chiral metasurface exhibits enhanced chiroptical resonances with near-unity CD (~0.996) and high Q factors (~2274) at terahertz frequencies. Further analyses based on numerical simulations reveal that CD of the chiroptical resonance shows exceptional remarkable tolerableness to the geometry asymmetry δ when δ various in a large range, while the corresponding Q factor is modulated accordingly. The results may develop a novel approach to manipulating advanced optical chirality for potential applications requiring strong CD with enhanced light-matter interaction.

Abstract:Optical metasurfaces with high-Q chiral resonances can boost light-matter interaction for various applications of chiral response for ultrathin, active, and nonlinear metadevices. Usually, such metasurfaces require sophisticated depth-resolved nanofabrication to realize subwavelength stereo-nanostructures, posing overwhelming challenges, especially in the short-wavelength range. Here, we suggest a novel planar design for chiral metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum (BICs) and demonstrate experimentally chiroptical responses with record-high Q-factors (Q=390) and near-perfect circular dichroism (CD=0.93) at optical frequencies. The symmetry-reduced meta-atoms are highly birefringent and support winding elliptical eigen-polarizations with opposite helicity surrounding the BIC polarization singularity, providing a convenient way for achieving maximal planar chirality tuned by either breaking in-plane symmetry or changing illumination direction. Such sharply resonant chirality realized in planar metasurfaces promises various practical applications in classical and quantum optics including chiral sensing, enantiomer selection, and chiral quantum emitters.

Abstract:We demonstrate that rotationally symmetric chiral metasurfaces can support arbitrarily sharp resonances with the maximum optical chirality determined by precise shaping of bound states in the continuum (BICs). Being uncoupled from one circular polarisation of light and resonantly coupled to its counterpart, a metasurface hosting the chiral BIC resonance exhibits a narrow peak in the circular dichroism spectrum. We propose a realization of such chiral BIC metasurfaces based on pairs of dielectric bars and validate the concept of maximum chirality by numerical simulations

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces with pronounced reflective chiroptical responses have drawn extensive attention as they can offer great opportunities for various chirality-related applications. However, their fascinating potential are restrained by limited chiroptical responses, relatively complex design principle, and fabrication strategy. Herein, a concise and general design principle to develop out-of-plane reflective chiral metasurfaces, empowered with the maximum theoretical circular dichroism (CD), is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The designed out-of-plane chiral metasurfaces operating in the terahertz (THz) region are flexibly fabricated via a simple, scalable, low-cost and lithography-free fabrication strategy by integrating a three-dimensional (3D) printing technique. Finally, the methodological stabilities and the strong chiroptical responses of proposed chiral metasurfaces are validated experimentally. From the general design principle, simple fabrication strategy as well as maximum chiroptical responses of proposed reflective chiral metasurfaces, it can be envisaged that these findings may overcome the difficulties in design, optimization, and fabrication for reflective chiral metasurfaces and provide promising potentials for various chirality-related applications in emerging THz technologies, such as chiral sensing, imaging, spectroscopy and polarimetry.

Abstract:Abstract Optical metasurfaces with high quality factors (Q-factors) of chiral resonances can boost substantially light-matter interaction for various applications of chiral response in ultrathin, active, and nonlinear metadevices. However, current approaches lack the flexibility to enhance and tune the chirality and Q-factor simultaneously. Here, we suggest a design of chiral metasurface supporting bound state in the continuum (BIC) and demonstrate experimentally chiroptical responses with ultra-high Q-factors and near-perfect circular dichroism (CD = 0.93) at optical frequencies. We employ the symmetry-reduced meta-atoms with high birefringence supporting winding elliptical eigenstate polarizations with opposite helicity. It provides a convenient way for achieving the maximal planar chirality tuned by either breaking in-plane structure symmetry or changing illumination angle. Beyond linear CD, we also achieved strong near-field enhancement CD and near-unitary nonlinear CD in the same planar chiral metasurface design with circular eigen-polarization. Sharply resonant chirality realized in planar metasurfaces promises various practical applications including chiral lasers and chiral nonlinear filters.

Abstract:We investigate the chiral spectral singularities, i.e., laser threshold modes, in PT-symmetric dielectric metasurfaces originating from quasi-bound states in the continuum. The poles, referred to as the quasi-bound states in the continuum, of scattering matrix can move to the upper complex frequency plane from the lower half-plane by increasing the balanced gain and loss. The maximal intrinsic optical chirality of laser threshold mode has been theoretically demonstrated via the large transmission circular dichroism spectra. Our work paves the way for studying the enhanced optical chirality in non-Hermitian nanophotonics empowered by quasi-bound states in the continuum, together with various intriguing applications, such as chiral coherent perfect absorber and laser.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) enable sharp resonances. However, the independent control of circular dichroism (CD) and quality‐factor (Q‐factor) of quasi‐BIC resonances is challenging due to their strong correlation. Here, by exploiting plasmonic metasurfaces with asymmetric integrated‐resonance units, this challenge was addressed and novel mechanisms were revealed for at‐will manipulation of CD in high Q‐factor chiral quasi‐BIC resonances. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) offer novel mechanisms to boost the quality factor (Q‐factor) of resonances. Unfortunately, current studies on chiral BICs metasurfaces suffer from a fundamental trade‐off between Q‐factor and circular dichroism (CD), presenting a significant hurdle that severely limits the independent control between CD and Q‐factors. Here, 3D plasmonic metasurfaces are numerically demonstrated that overcome the trade‐off and offer high‐Q quasi‐BIC resonances (Q ≈ 938) with strong CD (≈0.67) in the mid‐infrared. These metasurfaces are made of integrated‐resonance units consisting of a twisted vertical split‐ring resonator (VSRR) and a wall. Importantly, this dissimilar dimer configuration unlocks a new degree of freedom to decouple the Q‐factor and CD, that is, the Q‐factor and CD can be relatively independently manipulated by the height of the wall and the twisted angle of the VSRR, respectively. These results provide novel paradigms to manipulate advanced chiroptical responses, with various applications that require strong CD with enhanced light–matter interaction.

Abstract:In this paper, we suggest a design for a chiral metasurface at optical frequencies that shows a high level of circular dichroism (CD) of 0.94. By breaking the in-plane asymmetry and exciting the quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs), a high Q-factor was obtained, which greatly enhances the interaction between light and matter. Then, the multipole decomposition was confirmed to analyze its mode of excitation. The proposed design may provide new possibilities for high-performance optical devices.

Abstract:Spin-selective absorption is broadly applicable to numerous photonic devices. Here, based on a stereoscopic full metallic resonator array, a terahertz chiral metasurface with a single-layer structure is proposed and numerically demonstrated. By employing the coupled-mode theory, we demonstrate that the chiral metasurface can near-perfectly absorb one circularly polarized wave in the quasi-bound states in the continuum-induced critical coupling region but non-resonantly reflect its counterparts. Interestingly, the linewidths and handedness of the proposed chiral metasurface can be flexibly controlled by an in-plane symmetry perturbation. Our designs might offer an alternative strategy to develop chiral metasurfaces apart from conventional methods and might stimulate many potential applications for emerging terahertz technologies.

Abstract:Dynamic control of circular dichroism in photonic structures is critically important for compact spectrometers, stereoscopic displays, and information processing exploiting multiple degrees of freedom. Metasurfaces can help miniaturize chiral devices but only produce static and limited chiral responses. While external stimuli are able to tune resonances, their modulations are often weak, and reversing continuously the sign of circular dichroism is extremely challenging. Here, we demonstrate dynamically tunable chiral response of resonant metasurfaces supporting chiral bound states in the continuum combining them with phase-change materials. Phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases allows to control chiral response and vary chirality rapidly from -0.947 to +0.958 backward and forward via chirality continuum. Our demonstrations underpin the rapid development of chiral photonics and its applications.

Abstract:Chiral quasibound states in the continuum are realized in the visible range by controlling the etching depths in the substrate and inducing out‐of‐plane symmetry breaking. Maximally chiral emission from a perovskite metasurface is experimentally achieved in the normal direction. Approaching the ultimate limit of chiral interactions may lead to far‐reaching consequences in a variety of important applications. Although numerous natural materials exhibit chiral optical phenomena, they are typically very weak. Chiral nanophotonic structures can significantly enhance the chiroptical responses and provide unprecedented design flexibility. However, achieving extreme chirality that approaches the ultimate theoretical limit remains challenging. Here, chiral quasibound states in the continuum are realized in the visible range, and maximally chiral emission from a perovskite metasurface is demonstrated. A perovskite film is spin‐coated on a patterned glass substrate. Grayscale lithography is employed to control the etching depths in the substrate and induce out‐of‐plane symmetry breaking. An extremely high level of chiral emission is experimentally achieved in the normal direction at room temperature. Chiral emission is maximally enhanced for one helicity via critical coupling, while strongly suppressed for the other helicity. The physical mechanism is explained using the reciprocity principle. Approaching the ultimate limit of chiral responses may lead to far‐reaching consequences in various important applications as well as fundamental studies.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) chirality pursues customizable manipulation from narrowband to broadband. While conventional THz chirality is restricted by non-negligible linewidth and unable to handle narrowband well. Recently, the concept "quasi bound states in continuum" (quasi-BIC) is introduced to optics resonance system whose the quality factor can be extremely high with the ultra-low radiative loss, thus providing a conceptual feasibility for wave control with ultra-narrow linewidth. Herein, we construct quasi-BIC in a planar all-silicon THz metasurface with in-plane C2 and mirror symmetries breaking. Such system not only exposes the symmetry-protected BIC, but also exposes the parameter-tuned BIC assigned to single resonance type. An extremely narrow linewidth (below 0.06 GHz) with high quality factor (104 level) is obtained at quasi-BIC frequency, which achieves the ultra-narrowband THz chirality.

Abstract:Chiral metasurfaces with spin-selective properties have shown an unprecedented ability to modulate optical properties on the subwavelength scale. Alternatively, the simultaneous implementation of broadband tunable chiral response and wavefront manipulation on minimalistically constructed monolayer metasurfaces can lead to a plethora of applications such as optical converter diodes, chiral imaging, and sensing. Benefiting from a localized interference between two pairs of achiral meta -atoms whose optical behavior is similar to that of a half-wave plate (HWP), we theoretically provide a design strategy for constructing meta -molecules for asymmetric transmission (AT) parameters using interference mechanisms, each of which achieves a specific modulation function in the terahertz (THz) band. Localized interference effects with polarization-selective properties permit the incident circular polarization to be transformed into its orthogonal polarization mode. Benefiting from spin-selective transmission, the proposed metasurface simultaneously implements polarization filtering and wavefront manipulation with the assistance of a geometric phase mechanism. Not only that, chiral imaging schemes are also evaluated under such a design mechanism. As a result, this generalized assembly scheme can not only be extended to arbitrary working bands, but also find a variety of applications in photodetectors.
