Abstract:Studies on satellite association (SA) in parents of trisomy 21 offspring have not provided meaningful comparisons of SA frequencies since the latter was not expressed as a function of cell division number. We have used BrDU-labeling to compare SA frequencies in first and second division metaphases from lymphocytes of parents with either a trisomy 21 or trisomy 13 child and a control group. Parental origin of nondisjunction was determined in three of six families using quinacrine heteromorphisms. In the two cases of trisomy 13 determined, the errors occurred in maternal meiosis. BrDU-labeled metaphases were analyzed for SA frequency in four groups: A) parents contributing the extra chromosome; B) spouses of the parents in A; C) parents (nine) in whom the origin of a trisomy 13 or 21 was unknown; and D) healthy controls (five). The mean numbers of SAs/cell and of chromosomes/SA were not significantly different among the four groups for both first and second division cells. Sex and age showed no effect on SA frequency. There were significant decreases in mean numbers of SA/cell and chromosomes/SA in second-division cells (chromatids differentially stained) compared with first-division cells (chromatids undifferentiated). In second-division cells, two-chromosome SAs of all types showed random concordant and discordant alignment in each subject. The results from this BrDU-labeling approach provide no evidence that either quantitative or qualitative parameters of SA are directly related to a tendency of nondisjunction. They also show that acrocentric nondisjunction occurs in the presence of random chromatid alignment in SAs.
Adaptive Grasping of the Soft Prosthetic Hand Via Tactile Feedback

Abstract:Objecting grasping is a widely concerned interaction method of prosthetic hands, which is a complicated task remaining to explore and optimize. Aiming to grasp various objects adaptively, a five-finger dexterous soft prosthetic hand is proposed in this paper. Traditional prosthetic hand structures mainly rely on external feedback signals including visual information, which would be disturbed by many factors. Compared with external information, internal signals would be more reliable. Thus, some internal sensors have been equipped in the designed hand to detect grasping motion state, with tactile sensors measuring contact force on fingertips and curvature sensors evaluating fingers’ length deformation. Further, an adaptive control strategy is adopted to improve the performance of the designed prosthetic hand. Finally, a series of experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. The corresponding results following the analysis show that the designed prosthetic hand can achieve great grasping performance on various unknown objects under the specific control strategy.

Abstract:Analysis of grip force signals tailored to hand and finger movement evolution and changes in grip force control during task execution provide unprecedented functional insight into somatosensory cognition. Somatosensory cognition is the basis of our ability to act upon and to transform the physical world around us, to recognize objects on the basis of touch alone, and to grasp them with the right amount of force for lifting and manipulating them. Recent technology has permitted the wireless monitoring of grip force signals recorded from biosensors in the palm of the human hand to track and trace human grip forces deployed in cognitive tasks executed under conditions of variable sensory (visual, auditory) input. Non-invasive multi-finger grip force sensor technology can be exploited to explore functional interactions between somatosensory brain mechanisms and motor control, in particular during learning a novel and complex tasks where the planning and strategic execution of hand movements is essential. Under the light of a comprehensive overview of recent discoveries into the functional significance of human grip force variations, perspectives for future studies in cognition, in particular the cognitive control of strategic hand movements in robot-assisted precision tasks, are pointed out.

Abstract:The human somatosensory cortex is intimately linked to other central brain functions such as vision, audition, mechanoreception, and motor planning and control. These links are established through brain learning, and display a considerable functional plasticity. This latter fulfills an important adaptive role and ensures, for example, that humans are able to reliably manipulate and control objects in the physical world under constantly changing conditions in their immediate sensory environment. Variations in human grip force are a direct reflection of this specific kind of functional plasticity. Data from preliminary experiments where wearable wireless sensor technology (sensor gloves) was exploited to measure human grip force variations under varying sensory input conditions (eyes open or shut, soft music or hard music during gripping) are discussed here to show the extent to which grip force sensing permits quantifying somatosensory brain interactions and their functional plasticity. Experiments to take this preliminary work further are suggested. Implications for robotics, in particular the development of end-effector robots for upper limb movement planning and control, are brought forward.

Abstract:How humans coordinate digit forces to perform dexterous manipulation is not well understood. This gap is due to the use of tasks devoid of dexterity requirements and/or the use of analytical techniques that cannot isolate the roles that digit forces play in preventing object slip and controlling object position and orientation (pose). In our recent work, we used a dexterous manipulation task and decomposed digit forces into F G , the internal force that prevents object slip, and F M , the force responsible for object pose control. Unlike F G , F M was modulated from object lift onset to hold, suggesting their different sensitivity to sensory feedback acquired during object lift. However, the extent to which F G and F M can be controlled independently remains to be determined. Importantly, how F G and F M change as a function of object property is mathematically indeterminate and therefore requires active modulation. To address this gap, we systematically changed either object mass or external torque. The F M normal component responsible for object orientation control was modulated to changes in object torque but not mass. In contrast, F G was distinctly modulated to changes in object mass and torque. These findings point to a differential sensitivity of F G and F M to task requirements and provide novel insights into the neural control of dexterous manipulation. Importantly, our results indicate that the proposed digit force decomposition has the potential to capture important differences in how sensory inputs are processed and integrated to simultaneously ensure grasp stability and dexterous object pose control.

Abstract:Fifty women with human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced abnormal cervical smears were randomly allocated to either CO2-laser vaporization or routine control. The success rate at the 6 months check was 100% after laser treatment compared to that of 72% in the control group (p less than 0.05). Although longer follow-up is needed to fully establish the efficacy of the treatment, the method seems appropriate to this large group of women at risk of developing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Abstract:Predictive control within dexterous object manipulation while allowing for the choice of contact points has been shown to employ a predominantly feedback-based force modulation. Anticipation is thought to be facilitated through the internal representation of the object dynamics being integrated and updated on a trial-to-trial basis with the feedback of contact locations on the object. This is as opposed to the classically studied memory representation-based fingertip force control for grasping with pre-selected contact locations. We designed a study to examine this grasp context-dependent asymmetry in sensorimotor integration by introducing binary uncertainty about the grasp type before movement initiation within the framework of motor planning. An inverted T-shaped instrumented object was presented to 24 participants as the manipulandum, and they were asked to reach, grasp, and lift it while minimising the roll. We dissociated the planning and the execution phases by pseudo-randomly manipulating the availability of visual contact cues on the object after movement onset. Our results suggest that uncertainty about the grasp type during movement preparation anterogradely modulated the differential weighting of feedback and feedforward mechanisms in anticipatory coordination.

Can Modular Finger Control for In-Hand Object Stabilization be accomplished by Independent Tactile Feedback Control Laws?

Abstract:Currently grip control during in-hand manipulation is usually modeled as part of a monolithic task, yielding complex controllers based on force control specialized for their situations. Such non-modular and specialized control approaches render the generalization of these controllers to new in-hand manipulation tasks difficult. Clearly, a grip control approach that generalizes well between several tasks would be preferable. We propose a modular approach where each finger is controlled by an independent tactile grip controller. Using signals from the human-inspired biotac sensor, we can predict future slip - and prevent it by appropriate motor actions. This slip-preventing grip controller is first developed and trained during a single-finger stabilization task. Subsequently, we show that several independent slip-preventing grip controllers can be employed together without any form of central communication. The resulting approach works for two, three, four and five finger grip stabilization control. Such a modular grip control approach has the potential to generalize across a large variety of inhand manipulation tasks, including grip change, finger gaiting, between-hands object transfer, and across multiple objects.

Abstract:We investigated the effect of age on predictive and reactive grip force control. We compared the coupling between the grip and load force when participants tapped the object (i.e., self-TAP condition) held in their contralateral hand or when the experimenter tapped the object (i.e., external-TAP condition). Participants held the object either with their dominant or their non-dominant hands. Neurophysiological changes occur in the brain throughout childhood, so we hypothesized that these changes would make motor prediction less reliable in adolescents than adults. We compared adolescents' predictive and reactive grip force control ( n = 19) to adults ( n = 19). We quantified the coupling between grip and load forces using cross-correlation. The lags determined whether peak grip force occurred before (predictive control) or after (reactive control) peak load force. In the self-TAP condition, the change in grip force occurred significantly earlier in adults compared to adolescents by ~ 24 ms for the dominant and ~ 12 ms for the non-dominant hands. During the external-TAP condition, the peak grip force lagged the peak load force for both groups, but the lags were shorter for adolescents than adults for both hands. Smaller finger sizes with larger neural afferent density could enhance the cutaneous reflex responses caused by the sudden change in loading. For the self-TAP condition, results confirmed less efficient motor prediction in adolescents. Morphological and neurophysiological changes unfold in the developing brain during childhood; they can introduce variability into the neural circuits responsible for refining motor prediction.

The toolkit is capable of modeling the interactions between an AFM tip and carbon nanotubes on a substrate surface and generating optimum and safe manipulation paths. In addition, haptic guides were designed to help the user to follow the calculated paths, to avoid obstacles.

Its capability lies in perceiving interaction dynamics through touch and adjusting contact force direction and magnitude to ensure successful manipulation. Despite advancements in control algorithms, sensing technologies, compliance integration, and ongoing research, precise finger force control for dexterous manipulation using tactile sensing remains relatively <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://unexplored.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this work, we explore the challenges related to individual finger contact force control and propose a method for directing such forces perceived through tactile sensing. Abstract:The human hand is able to achieve an unparalleled diversity of manipulation actions. One contributor to this capability is the structure of the human finger pad, where soft internal tissue is surrounded by a layer of more rigid skin. This permits conforming of the finger pad around object contours for firm grasping, while also permitting low-friction sliding over object surfaces with a light touch. These varying modes of manipulation contribute to the common ability for in-hand-manipulation, where an object (such as a car key) may repositioned relative to the palm. In this letter, we present a simple mechanical analogy to the human finger pad, via a robotic finger with both high- and low-friction surfaces. The low-friction surface is suspended on elastic elements and recesses into a cavity when a sufficient normal force is applied (~1.2 to 2.5 N depending on contact location), exposing the high-friction surface. We implement one “variable friction” finger and one “constant friction” finger on a 2-DOF gripper with a simple torque controller. With this setup, we demonstrate how within-hand rolling and sliding of an object may be achieved without the need for tactile sensing, high-dexterity, dynamic finger/object modeling, or complex control methods. The addition of an actuator to the finger design allows controlled switching between variable-friction and constant-friction modes, enabling precise object translation and reorientation within a grasp, via simple motion sequences. The rolling and sliding behaviors are characterized with experimentally verified geometric models.

Abstract:In robotic hand grasp control, torque output adjustment is one of most important problem. Grasping force optimization based on Coulomb friction cone needs complex calculation and exact modeling. In view of human grasp, precise manipulation depends on much more experience rather than concrete object model. We propose a torque control approach to output and adjust the optimal torque automatically based on experience learning and fusion sensing including tactile reading, joint angle change, and torque feedback. Firstly, pre-grasp can help to recognize and classify what kind of object it is and whether the robot has grasp experience for this object. If it is an unknown grasp, the output torque will be optimized and adjusted by updating the experience database through incremental learning. Experiments indicate that with the incremental learning, our robotic hand can easily calculate the optimal output torque and finally grasp novel object stably and safely.
Tactile-Driven Non-Prehensile Object Manipulation via Extrinsic Contact Mode Control

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of non-prehensile manipulation using grasped objects. This problem is a superset of many common manipulation skills including instances of tool-use (e.g., grasped spatula flipping a burger) and assembly (e.g., screwdriver tightening a screw). Here, we present an algorithmic approach for non-prehensile manipulation leveraging a gripper with highly compliant and high-resolution tactile sensors. Our approach solves for robot actions that drive object poses and forces to desired values while obeying the complex dynamics induced by the sensors as well as the constraints imposed by static equilibrium, object kinematics, and frictional contact. Our method is able to produce a variety of manipulation skills and is amenable to gradient-based optimization by exploiting differentiability within contact modes (e.g., specifications of sticking or sliding contacts). We evaluate 4 variants of controllers that attempt to realize these plans and demonstrate a number of complex skills including non-prehensile planar sliding and pivoting on a variety of object geometries. The perception and controls capabilities that drive these skills are the building blocks towards dexterous and reactive autonomy in unstructured environments.

Abstract:Gripping control of the manipulator is still a technical problem in its research field. Accurate, efficient, and lossless crawling remains a challenge due to the difficulty of controlling grip mode, joint movement, and optimal implementation. Human hands can accurately perceive objects and grasp flexibly, so understanding and simulating the gripping behavior of human hands is crucial for controlling manipulators. In this study, an electronic glove was designed and assembled based on manual grasping and mechanical grip perception, combined with force sensors, bending sensors, and inertial sensor (Inertial Measurement Unit, IMU). The mechanism and characteristics of handgrip are analyzed from the four aspects, including force and bending relationship, hand grasping patterns, finger cooperation and correlation, and the law of external interaction acceleration. The pressure generally increases with the increase of bending, so the force can be controlled by controlling the degree of bending. Moreover, mode A shows a more complex grip mechanism compared with mode B. The pose position and orientation of the manipulator can be controlled by analyzing the gripping characteristics between the various modes. Besides, the correlation between the index finger, middle finger, and ring finger is relatively high. By understanding the correlation law between the fingers can control the cooperative movement of the manipulator when grasping. And the angular velocity of the X and Y axes changes significantly during the grasping process. The direction of movement and position of the manipulator can be determined by the changing state of the angular velocity. Thus, the analysis of these aspects could provide theoretical guidance for the structural design, surface material selection, and grasping planning of bionic manipulators.

Abstract:During object manipulation, humans adjust the grip force to friction, such that slippery objects are squeezed more firmly than sticky ones. This essential mechanism to keep a stable grasp relies on feedback from tactile afferents innervating the fingertips, that are sensitive to local skin strains. To test if this feedback originates from the skin-object interface, we asked participants to perform a grip-lift task with an instrumented object able to monitor skin strains at the contact through transparent plates of different frictions. We observed that, following an unbeknown change in plate across trials, participants adapted their grip force to friction. After switching from high to low friction, we found a significant increase in strain inside the contact arising ~100 ms before the modulation of grip force, suggesting that differences in strain patterns before lift-off are used by the nervous system to quickly adjust the force to the frictional properties of manipulated objects.

Abstract:AbstractThe human hand uses a combination of feedforward and feedback mechanisms to accomplish high degree of freedom in grasp control efficiently. In this study, we used a synergy-based control model to determine the effect of sensory feedback on kinematic synergies in the grasping hand. Ten subjects performed two types of grasps: one that included feedback (real) and one without feedback (memory-guided), at two different speeds (rapid and natural). Kinematic synergies were extracted from rapid real and rapid memory-guided grasps using principal component analysis. Synergies extracted from memory-guided grasps revealed greater preservation of natural inter-finger relationships than those found in corresponding synergies extracted from real grasps. Reconstruction of natural real and natural memory-guided grasps was used to test performance and generalizability of synergies. A temporal analysis of reconstruction patterns revealed the differing contribution of individual synergies in real grasps versus memory-guided grasps. Finally, the results showed that memory-guided synergies could not reconstruct real grasps as accurately as real synergies could reconstruct memory-guided grasps. These results demonstrate how visual and tactile feedback affects a closed-loop synergy-based motor control system.

Abstract:Humans use their fingers to perform a variety of tasks-from simple grasping, to manipulating objects, to typing and playing musical instruments-a variety wider than any other species. The more sophisticated the task, the more it involves individuated finger movements, those in which one or more selected fingers perform an intended action while the motion of other digits is constrained. Here we review the neurobiology of such individuated finger movements. We consider their evolutionary origins, the extent to which finger movements are in fact individuated, and the evolved features of neuromuscular control that both enable and limit individuation. We go on to discuss other features of motor control that combine with individuation to create dexterity, the impairment of individuation by disease, and the broad extent of capabilities that individuation confers on humans. We comment on the challenges facing development of a truly dexterous bionic hand. We conclude by identifying topics for future investigation that will advance our understanding of how neural networks interact across multiple regions of the central nervous system to create individuated movements for the skills human use to express their cognitive activity.

Abstract:Grip control during robotic in-hand manipulation is usually modeled as part of a monolithic task, relying on complex controllers specialized for specific situations. Such approaches do not generalize well and are difficult to apply to novel manipulation tasks. Here, we propose a modular object stabilization method based on a proposition that explains how humans achieve grasp stability. In this bio-mimetic approach, independent tactile grip stabilization controllers ensure that slip does not occur locally at the engaged robot fingers. Such local slip is predicted from the tactile signals of each fingertip sensor i.e., BioTac and BioTac SP by Syntouch. We show that stable grasps emerge without any form of central communication when such independent controllers are engaged in the control of multi-digit robotic hands. These grasps are resistant to external perturbations while being capable of stabilizing a large variety of objects.
