Abstract:We pursue Arthur's invariant trace formula for certain coverings of connected reductive groups by deducing explicit formulas for its spectral side. This is based on some results in local harmonic analysis from an earlier preprint. The arguments are due to Arthur, and we will explain the necessary fine-tunings for coverings.

Abstract:We study some aspects of the geometric side of the Jacquet-Rallis relative trace formula. Globally, we compute each geometric term of the Jacquet-Rallis relative trace formula on the general linear group for regular supported test functions. We prove that it can be described by the regular orbital integral. Locally, we show that the regular orbital integral can be compared with the semisimple orbital integral on the unitary group.

Abstract:A certain generalization of the Selberg trace formula was proved by the first named author in 1999. In this generalization instead of considering the integral of $K(z,z)$ (where $K(z,w)$ is an automorphic kernel function) over the fundamental domain, one considers the integral of $K(z,z)u(z)$, where $u(z)$ is a fixed automorphic eigenfunction of the Laplace operator. This formula was proved for discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})$, and just as in the case of the classical Selberg trace formula it was obtained by evaluating in two different ways ("geometrically" and "spectrally") the integral of $K(z,z)u(z)$. In the present paper we work out the geometric side of a further generalization of this generalized trace formula: we consider the case of discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})^n$ where $n>1$. Many new difficulties arise in the case of these groups due to the fact that the classification of conjugacy classes is much more complicated for $n>1$ than in the case $n=1$.

Abstract:We study a trace formula for tamely ramified abelian varieties $A$ over a complete discretely valued field, which expresses the Euler characteristic of the special fiber of the Néron model of $A$ in terms of the Galois action on the $\ell$-adic cohomology of $A$. If $A$ has purely additive reduction, the trace formula yields a cohomological interpretation for the number of connected components of the special fiber of the Néron model.

Abstract:We establish the invariant trace formula (à la Arthur) for the adélic covers of connected reductive groups over a number field, under the hypothesis that the trace Paley-Wiener theorem is verified for all Levi subgroups at the real archimedean places. For instance, this hypothesis can be verified for the metaplectic covers of GL(n), or the twofold metaplectic cover of Sp(2n). We also give simple trace formulae when the test function satisfies certain cuspidality properties.

Abstract:Relative trace formulas play a central role in studying automorphic forms. In this paper, we use a relative trace formula approach to derive a Kuznetsov type formula for the group $GSp_4$. We focus on giving a final formula that is as explicit as possible, and we plan on returning to applications elsewhere.

Abstract:We stabilize the full Arthur-Selberg trace formula for the metaplectic covering of symplectic groups over a number field. This provides a decomposition of the invariant trace formula for metaplectic groups, which encodes information about the genuine $L^2$-automorphic spectrum, into a linear combination of stable trace formulas of products of split odd orthogonal groups via endoscopic transfer. By adapting the strategies of Arthur and Moeglin-Waldspurger from the linear case, the proof is built on a long induction process that mixes up local and global, geometric and spectral data. As a by-product, we also stabilize the local trace formula for metaplectic groups over any local field of characteristic zero.

Abstract:In this paper we give a trace formula for Hecke operators acting on the cohomology of a Fuchsian group of finite covolume, with coefficients in a module $V$. The proof is based on constructing an operator whose trace on $V$ equals the Lefschetz number of the Hecke correspondence on cohomology, generalizing the operator introduced together with Don Zagier for the modular group.

Abstract:In previous work, we gave a local formula for the index of Heisenberg elliptic operators on contact manifolds. We constructed a cocycle in periodic cyclic cohomology which, when paired with the Connes-Chern character of the principal Heisenberg symbol, calculates the index. A crucial ingredient of our index formula was a new trace on the algebra of Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators. The construction of this trace was rather involved. In the present paper, we clarify the nature of this trace.

Abstract:We show, using the trace formula, that any Newton stratum of a Shimura variety of PEL-type of types (A) and (C) is non-empty at the primes of good reduction. Furthermore we prove conditionally the non-emptiness for Shimura data associated to odd Spin groups. Our results are conditional on Rapoport-Langlands conjecture and Arthur's conjectures on the discrete spectrum. Both these results have been announced by Arthur and Kisin in significant cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the geometric expansion of a local twisted trace formula for the Whittaker induction of any symmetric pairs that are coregular. This generalizes the local (twisted) trace formula for reductive groups proved by Arthur \cite{A91} and Waldspurger \cite{WalFTLtordue}. We also prove a formula for the regular germs of quasi-characters associated to strongly cuspidal functions in terms of certain weighted orbital integrals. As a consequence of our trace formula and the formula for regular germs of quasi-characters, we prove a simple local trace formula of those models for strongly cuspidal test functions which implies a multiplicity formula for these models. We also present various applications of our trace formula and multiplicity formula, including a necessary condition for a discrete L-packet to contain a representation with a unitary Shalika model (resp. a Galois model for classical groups) in terms of the associated Langlands parameter, and we also compute the summation of the corresponding multiplicities for certain discrete L-packets.

Abstract:We outline an approach to proving functoriality of automorphic representations using trace formula. More specifically, we construct a family of integral operators on the space of automorphic forms whose eigenvalues are expressed in terms of the L-functions of automorphic representations and begin the analysis of their traces using the orbital side of the stable trace formula. We show that the most interesting part, corresponding to regular conjugacy classes, is nothing but a sum over a finite-dimensional vector space over the global field, which we call the Steinberg-Hitchin base. Therefore it may be analyzed using the Poisson summation formula. Our main result is that the leading term of the dual sum (the value at 0) is precisely the dominant term of the trace formula (the contribution of the trivial representation). This gives us hope that the full Poisson summation formula would reveal the patterns predicted by functoriality.

Abstract:We show that the cuspidal component of the stable trace formula of a special odd orthogonal group over a number field, satisfies a weak form of beyond endoscopic decomposition. We also study the $r$-stable trace formula, when $r$ is the standard or the second fundamental representation of the dual group. The results are consequences of Arthur's works on endoscopic classification of automorphic representations, together with known results concerning a class of Langlands $L$-functions for special odd orthogonal groups.
