Abstract:The effective application of a data mining process is littered with many difficult and technical decisions (i.e. data cleansing, feature transformations, algorithms, parameters, evaluation). Subsequently, most data mining products provide a large number of models and tools, but few provide intelligent assistance for addressing the above-mentioned challenges that face the non-specialist data miner. In this paper, we propose the realization of a hybrid intelligent data mining assistant, based on the synergistic combination of both declarative (Description Logic) and procedural (SWRL Rules) ontology knowledge in order to empower the non-specialist data miner throughout the key phases of the CRISP-DM data mining process.

Abstract:Mean field and exact diagonalization studies on the quasiparticle excitation of an SO(5) symmetric two-leg ladder system are reported. It is shown that the energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation is caused by the formation of rung singlet states. We find that shadow peaks can occur above the Fermi surface with antiferromagnetic electron correlations involving only rungs in the spin ladder.

Abstract:Galaxies represent the visible fabric of the Universe and there has been considerable progress recently in both observational and theoretical studies. The underlying goal is to understand the present-day diversity of galaxy forms, masses and luminosities in the context of theories for the growth of structure. Popular models predict the bulk of the galaxy population assembled recently, in apparent agreement with optical and near-infrared observations. However, detailed conclusions rely crucially on the choice of the cosmological parameters. Although the star formation history has been sketched to early times, uncertainties remain, particularly in connecting to the underlying mass assembly rate. I discuss the expected progress in determining the cosmological parameters and address the question of which observations would most accurately check contemporary models for the origin of the Hubble sequence. The new generation of ground-based and future space-based large telescopes, equipped with instrumentation appropriate for studying the resolved properties of distant galaxies, offer the potential of substantial progress in this field.

Radio Studies of Galaxy Formation: Dense Gas History of the Universe

Abstract: Line and continuum studies at centimeter through submillimeter wavelengths address probe deep into the earliest, most active and dust obscured phases of galaxy formation, and reveal the molecular and cool atomic gas. We summarize the techniques of radio astronomy to perform these studies, then review the progress on radio studies of galaxy formation. The dominant work over the last decade has focused on massive, luminous starburst galaxies (submm galaxies and AGN host galaxies). The far infrared luminosities are ~ 1e13 Lsun, implying star formation rates, SFR > 1e3 Msun/year. Molecular gas reservoirs are found with masses: M(H_2) > 1e10 (alpha/0.8}) Msun. The CO excitation in these luminous systems is much higher than in low redshift spiral galaxies. Imaging of the gas distribution and dynamics suggests strongly interacting and merging galaxies, indicating gravitationally induced, short duration (~ 1e7 year) starbursts. These systems correspond to a major star formation episode in massive galaxies in proto-clusters at intermediate to high redshift. Recently, radio observations have probed the more typical star forming galaxy population (SFR ~ 100 Msun/year), during the peak epoch of Universal star formation (z ~ 1.5 to 2.5). These observations reveal massive gas reservoirs without hyper-starbursts, and show that active star formation occurs over a wide range in galaxy stellar mass. The conditions in this gas are comparable to those found in the Milky Way disk. A key result is that the peak epoch of star formation in the Universe also corresponds to an epoch when the baryon content of star forming galaxies was dominated by molecular gas, not stars. We consider the possibility of tracing out the dense gas history of the Universe, and perform initial, admittedly gross, calculations. ABRIDGED
Star Formation and Structure Formation at Redshifts 1 < z < 4

Abstract:The advent of 8m-class telescopes has made galaxies at 1 < z < 4 relatively easy to detect and study. This is a brief and incomplete review of some of the recent results to emerge from surveys at these redshifts. After describing different strategies for finding galaxies at z >~ 1, and the differences (and similarities) in the resulting galaxy samples, I summarize what is known about the spatial clustering of star-forming galaxies at z >~ 1. Optically selected galaxies are the main focus of this review, but in the final section I discuss the connection between optical and sub-mm samples, and argue that the majority of the 850 micron background may have been produced by known optically selected populations at high redshift. Among the new results presented are the dust-corrected luminosity function of Lyman-break galaxies at z~3, the estimated contribution to the 850 micron background from optically selected galaxies at 1<z<5, revised estimates of the spatial clustering strength of Lyman-break galaxies at z~3, and an estimate of the clustering strength of star-forming galaxies at z~1 derived from a new spectroscopic sample of ~800 galaxies with <z> = 1.0, sigma_z = 0.10.

Abstract:Unless the nearby universe is subtly anomalous, it should contain a relatively normal selection of galaxies whose histories are representative of field galaxies in general throughout the Universe. We can therefore take advantage of our ability to resolve the nearby galaxies into individual stars to directly, and accurately, measure star formation histories. The star formation histories are determined from model-fitting analysis, based on stellar evolution tracks, of colour-magnitude diagrams. The most accurate information on star formation rates extending back to the earliest epoches can be obtained from the structure of the main sequence. However, the oldest main sequence turnoffs are very faint, and it is often necessary to use the more evolved stars to infer the star formation history. These can then be compared with the properties of galaxies seen over a large range of lookback times at moderate to high redshifts. There is considerable evidence that the faint blue galaxies seen in large numbers in cosmological redshift surveys are the progenitors of the small late-type irregular galaxies seen in copious numbers in the Local Group, and we concentrate on these here.

Abstract:A fundamental question of extra-galactic astronomy that is yet to be fully understood, concerns the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) and supermassive black hole (SMBH) activity with cosmic time, as well as their interplay and how it impacts galaxy evolution. A primary focus that could shed more light on these questions is the study of merging systems, comprising highly star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) at the earliest stages of galactic formation. However, it is essential to explore complementary selection methods across multiple wavelengths. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of a sample of high-redshift ($z>3$) far-infrared (far-IR) and radio-emitting galaxies in the highest possible spatial resolution. In order to select the galactic population of our interest, we selected galaxies that present relatively compact radio morphologies at 1.4 GHz as well as a far-IR spectrum that peaks in flux at $\lambda \geq 350 \, \mu m$. For these selection criteria, we used the COSMOS and ECDF-S fields, which provide high spectral and spatial resolution at a multi-wavelength scale. We derived a sample of eight galaxies that were identified either photometrically or spectroscopically at $z>3$ from literature studies and by our team. A thorough investigation of available optical, near-IR, and millimetre (mm) imaging reveals a possible merging scenario in five out of eight cases in our sample. Additionally, available multi-wavelength photometry strongly suggests active star formation at the $10^3 \, M_{\odot}/yr$ level in massive systems co-hosting an active SMBH. Comparison of these results with previous studies, suggests that our selection method preferentially identifies galaxies hosting an active SMBH, as well as a strong SFG component, resulting in high SFR and IR luminosity.

Abstract:The beginning of the 21st century marked the "modern era of galaxy surveys" in astronomy. Rapid innovation in observing technology, combined with the base built by galaxy catalogs and atlases dating back centuries, sparked an explosion of new observational programs driven by efforts to understand the different processes driving galaxy evolution. This review aims to answer the following science questions: (1) how have galaxy surveys evolved in the past 20 yr, and how have traditional observational programs been affected by the rise of large panoramic surveys, (2) can the term "nearby" be quantified in the context of galaxy surveys, and (3) how complete is the coverage of the nearby universe and what areas hold the largest opportunity for future work? We define a galaxy survey as a systematically obtained data set which aims to characterize a set of astronomical objects. Galaxy surveys can further be subdivided based on the methods used to select the objects to observe, the properties of the survey samples (e.g., distance or morphology), or the observing strategies used. We focus on pointed nearby galaxy surveys, which we define as surveys which observe a specific sample of target galaxies. Through a study of 43 nearby galaxy surveys, we find no standardized quantitative definition for "nearby" with surveys covering a wide range of distances. We observe that since 2003, traditional targeted galaxy surveys have undergone a dramatic evolution, transitioning from large, statistical surveys to small, ultra-specific projects which compliment the rise of large high resolution panoramic surveys. While wavelength regimes observable from the ground (such as radio or optical wavelengths) host numerous surveys, the largest opportunity for future work is within the less covered space-based wavelength regimes (especially ultraviolet and X-ray).

Abstract:The article compares traditional coefficients of thermodynamic activity as a parameter related to individual chemical species to newly introduced reduced chaotic temperatures as system characteristics, both regarding their usage in thermodynamic simulation of open chemical systems. Logical and mathematical backgrounds of both approaches are discussed. It is shown that usage of reduced chaotic temperatures and the Method of Chemical Dynamics to calculate chemical and phase composition in open chemical systems is much less costly, easier to perform and potentially leads to better precision.

Searching for the earliest galaxies in the 21 cm forest

Abstract:We use a model developed by Xu, Ferrara, and Chen (Mon Not Roy Astron Soc, submitted) to compute the 21 cm line absorption signatures imprinted by star-forming dwarf galaxies (DGs) and starless minihalos (MHs). The method, based on a statistical comparison of the equivalent width (Wν) distribution and flux correlation function, allows us to derive a simple selection criteria for candidate DGs at very high (z ⩽ 8) redshift. We find that ≈18% of the total number of DGs along a line of sight to a target radio source (GRB or quasar) can be identified by the condition Wν < 0; these objects correspond to the high-mass tail of the DG distribution at high redshift, and are embedded in large HII regions. The criterion Wν > 0.37 kHz instead selects ≈11% of MHs. Selected candidate DGs could later be re-observed in the near-IR by the JWST with high efficiency, thus providing a direct probe of the most likely reionization sources.

Abstract:State-of-the-art rest-frame UV and FIR photometric and spectroscopic observations are now pushing the redshift frontiers of galaxy formation studies up to $z\sim9-11$ and beyond. Recent HST observations unveiled the presence of a star-forming galaxy exhibiting the Lyman break at $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.47\pm0.01$ $\mu$m, i.e., a $z=11.09^{+0.08}_{-0.12}$ galaxy with a stellar mass of $\sim10^9 M_\odot$, demonstrating that galaxy build-up was well underway early in the epoch of reionization (EoR) at $z>10$. Targeted spectroscopy of a lensed Lyman break galaxy uncovers the earliest metals known to date up to $z=9.1096\pm0.0006$ by detecting the bright [OIII] 88~$\mu$m nebular line, indicating the onset of star formation 250 million years after the Big Bang, i.e., corresponding to a redshift of $z\sim15$. These latest findings lead us to a number of key questions: How and when metal enrichment happened in the EoR? What was the nature of the earliest-epoch star-forming galaxies at $z=10-15$? What was the spatial distribution of such galaxies, and what was the relation to the putative large-scale ionization bubbles during the EoR? What were the dark-halo masses of such earliest-epoch star-forming galaxies? To address all these questions, we need to uncover a statistically large number of $z=10-15$ galaxies in the pre-reionization era. Here we argue two possible pathways: (1) a wide-area, sensitive blind spectroscopic survey of [OIII] 88 $\mu$m line-emitting galaxies at submillimeter wavelengths, and (2) an ultra-wide-area, high-cadence photometric survey of transient sources at radio-to-(sub)millimeter wavelengths, together with the immediate follow-up spectroscopy with an ultra-wide-band spectrograph, to catch the pop-III $\gamma$-ray bursts.

Abstract:The rest-frame UV emission from massive stars contains a wealth of information about the physical nature and conditions of star formation in galaxies. Using studies of the rest-frame UV, the past decade has witnessed the beginning of knowledge about the existence and properties of galaxies during the first few billion years after the Big Bang. This period of history corresponds to the formation of the first stars, the rapid formation of galaxy stellar populations, the reionization of the IGM, the production and dissemination of heavy elements, and the formation of the first black holes. Massive stars in these galaxies drive all of these events, and their light dominates the spectral energy distributions of galaxies. As we look to the 2020s, fundamental questions remain about the nature of these stellar populations and their evolution, from just before the peak of the cosmic star formation density (z~3), up to the epoch of reionization (z > 6). This next decade will provide transformative gains both in our ability to identify star-forming galaxies and accreting supermassive black holes at these early epochs with imaging surveys in the rest-frame UV (e.g., LSST, WFIRST). Ground-based, rest-frame UV spectroscopy on >20 m-class telescopes (e.g., GMT/TMT) offers the ability to investigate the astrophysical conditions in galaxies at the earliest cosmic times. This includes studies of the evolution in galaxy stellar populations, gas ionization (temperature, pressure), metallicity, and interstellar (and circumgalactic) gas kinematics and covering fractions. In this white paper, we describe the scientific prospects and the requirements for research in this area.

Cosmic Dawn: Studies of the Earliest Galaxies and Their Role in Cosmic Reionization

Abstract:I review recent progress and challenges in studies of the earliest galaxies, seen when the Universe was less than 1 billion years old. Can they be used as reliable tracers of the physics of cosmic reionization thereby complementing other, more direct, probes of the evolving neutrality of the intergalactic medium? Were star-forming galaxies the primary agent in the reionization process and what are the future prospects for identifying the earliest systems devoid of chemical enrichment? Ambitious future facilities are under construction for exploring galaxies and the intergalactic medium in the redshift range 6 to 20, corresponding to what we now consider the heart of the reionization era. I review what we can infer about this period from current observations and in the near-future with existing facilities, and conclude with a list of key issues where future work is required.

Abstract:The largest galaxies acquire their mass early on, when the Universe is still youthful. Cold streams violently feed these young galaxies a vast amount of fresh gas, resulting in very efficient star formation. Using a well resolved hydrodynamical simulation of galaxy formation, we demonstrate that these mammoth galaxies are already in place a couple of billion years after the Big Bang. Contrary to local starforming galaxies, where dust re-emits a large part of the stellar ultraviolet (UV) light at infrared and sub-millimetre wavelengths, our self-consistent modelling of dust extinction predicts that a substantial fraction of UV photons should escape from primordial galaxies. Such a model allows us to compute reliably the number of high redshift objects as a function of luminosity, and yields galaxies whose UV luminosities closely match those measured in the deepest observational surveys available. This agreement is remarkably good considering our admittedly still simple modelling of the interstellar medium (ISM) physics. The luminosity functions (LF) of virtual UV luminous galaxies coincide with the existing data over the whole redshift range from 4 to 7, provided cosmological parameters are set to their currently favoured values. Despite their considerable emission at short wavelengths, we anticipate that the counterparts of the brightest UV galaxies will be detected by future sub-millimetre facilities like ALMA

The Structures of Distant Galaxies I: Galaxy Structures and the Merger Rate to z~3 in the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field

Abstract:This paper begins a series in which we examine the structures of distant galaxies to directly determine the history of their formation modes. We start this series by examining the structures of z_F850LP < 27 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra-Deep field, the deepest high-resolution optical image taken to date. We investigate a few basic features of galaxy structure using this image. These include: (1) The agreement of visual eye-ball classifications and non-parametric quantitative (CAS, Gini/M_20) methods; (2) How distant galaxy quantitative structures can vary as a function of rest-frame wavelength; and (3) The evolution of distant galaxy structures up to z~3. One of our major conclusions is that the majority of galaxies with z_850 < 27 are peculiar in appearance, and that galaxy assembly is rapidly occurring at these magnitudes, even up to the present time. We find a general agreement between galaxy classification by eye and through quantitative methods, as well as a general agreement between the CAS and the Gini/M_20 parameters. We find that the Gini/M_20 method appears to find a larger number of galaxy mergers than the CAS system, but contains a larger contamination from non-mergers. We furthermore calculate the merger rate of galaxies in the UDF up to z~3, finding an increase with redshift as well as stellar mass, confirming previous work in the Hubble Deep Field. We find that massive galaxies with M_{*} > 10^10 M_0 undergo 4.3_+0.8^-0.8 major galaxy mergers at z < 3, with all of this merging occurring at z > 1.

There is considerable evidence that the faint blue galaxies seen in large numbers in cosmological surveys are the progenitors of the late-type irregular galaxies seen in copious numbers in the Local Group, and beyond. We consider how the ``Madau-diagram'', the star formation history of the Universe, would look if the Local Group were to be considered representative of the Universe as a whole.
Ancient Light from Young Cosmic Cities: Physical and Observational Signatures of Galaxy Proto-Clusters

Abstract:For a complete picture of galaxy cluster formation, it is important that we start probing the early epoch of z~2-7 during which clusters and their galaxies first began to form. Because the study of these so-called "proto-clusters" is currently limited by small number statistics, widely varying selection techniques and assumptions, we have performed a systematic study of cluster formation utilizing cosmological simulations. We use the Millennium Simulations to track the evolution of dark matter and galaxies in ~3,000 clusters from the earliest times to z=0. We define an effective radius R_e for proto-clusters and characterize their growth in size and mass. We show that the progenitor regions of galaxy clusters (M>10^14 M_sun/h) can already be identified at least up to z~5, provided that the galaxy overdensities, delta_gal, are measured on a sufficiently large scale (R_e~5-10 cMpc). We present the overdensities in matter, DM halos, and galaxies as functions of present-day cluster mass, redshift, bias, and window size that can be used to interpret the structures found in real surveys. We derive the probability that a structure having a delta_gal, defined by a set of observational selection criteria, is indeed a proto-cluster, and show how their z=0 masses can already be estimated long before virialization. Galaxy overdensity profiles as a function of radius are presented. We further show how their projected surface overdensities decrease as the uncertainties in redshift measurements increase. We provide a table of proto-cluster candidates selected from the literature, and discuss their properties in the light of our simulations predictions. This work provides the general framework that will allow us to extend the study of cluster formation out to much higher redshifts using the large number of proto-clusters that are expected to be discovered in, e.g., the upcoming HETDEX and HSC surveys.

The Role of Radio Observations in Studies of Infrared-Bright Galaxies: Prospects for a next-generation Very Large Array

Abstract:The bulk of the present-day stellar mass was formed in galaxies when the universe was less than half its current age (i.e., $1 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$). While this likely marks one of the most critical time periods for galaxy evolution, we currently do not have a clear picture on the radial extent and distribution of cold molecular gas and associated star formation within the disks of galaxies during this epoch. Such observations are essential to properly estimate the efficiency at which such galaxies convert their gas into stars, as well as to account for the various energetic processes that govern this efficiency. Long-wavelength (i.e., far-infrared--to--radio) observations are critical to penetrate the high-levels of extinction associated with dusty, infrared-bright galaxies that are driving the stellar mass assembly at such epochs. In this article we discuss how the next-generation Very Large Array will take a transformative step in our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution by delivering the ability to simultaneously study the relative distributions molecular gas and star formation on sub-kpc scales unbiased by dust for large populations of typical galaxies in the early universe detected by future far-infrared space missions.

Abstract:We are in the golden age for the search for high-redshift galaxies, made possible by a combination of new instruments and innovative search techniques. One of the major aims of such searches is to constrain the epoch of reionization (EoR), which marks the second major change in the ionization state of the Universe. Understanding the EoR is difficult since whilst it is galaxy evolution which drives reionization, reionization itself influences galaxy evolution through feedback effects. Unraveling the interplay of reionization and galaxy evolution is further complicated by of a lack of understanding of the metal enrichment and dust distribution in high redshift galaxies. To this end, a class of galaxies called Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) have been gaining enormous popularity as probes of all these three processes. In this thesis, we couple state of the art cosmological SPH simulations (GADGET-2) with a physically motivated, self-consistent model for LAEs, so as to be able to understand the importance of the intergalactic medium (IGM) ionization state, dust and peculiar velocities in shaping their observed properties. By doing so, the aim is to gain insight on the nature of LAEs, put precious constraints on their elusive physical properties and make predictions for future instruments such as the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Using our LAE model in conjunction with a code that builds the MW merger tree (GAMETE), we build a bridge between the high-redshift and the local Universe. We also use SPH simulations (GADGET-2) to study the nature of the earliest galaxies that have been detected as of yet, place constraints on their contribution to reionization, and predict their detectability using the next generation of instruments, such as the James Web Space Telescope (JWST).

Abstract:There are at least three reasons for being interested in galaxies at high redshifts that formed most of their stars quite quickly early in the history of the Universe: (1) the ages of their stellar populations can potentially place interesting constraints on cosmological parameters and on the epoch of the earliest major episodes of star formation, (2) their morphologies may provide important clues to the history and mechanisms of spheroid formation, and (3) they are likely to identify the regions of highest overdensity at a given redshift. We describe a systematic search for galaxies at z ~ 1.5 having essentially pure old stellar populations, with little or no recent star formation. Our approach is to apply a "photometric sieve" to the fields of quasars near this redshift, looking for companion objects with the expected spectral-energy distributions. Follow-up observations on two of the fields having candidates discovered by this technique are described.
