Abstract:We study the transition to synchronization in large, dense networks of chaotic circle maps, where an exact solution of the mean-field dynamics in the infinite network and all-to-all coupling limit is known. In dense networks of finite size and link probability of smaller than one, the incoherent state is meta-stable for coupling strengths that are larger than the mean-field critical coupling. We observe chaotic transients with exponentially distributed escape times and study the scaling behavior of the mean time to synchronization.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamic phase transition from partially or fully arrested state to spatiotemporal chaos in coupled logistic maps on a small-world network. Persistence of local variables in coarse grained sense acts as an excellent order parameter to study this transition. We investigate the phase diagram by varying coupling strength and small-world rewiring probability p of nonlocal connections. The persistent region is a compact region bounded by two critical lines where band-merging crisis occurs. On one critical line, the persistent sites shows a nonexponential (stretched exponential) decay for all p while for another one, it shows crossover from nonexponential to exponential behavior as p tends to 1. With an effectively antiferromagnetic coupling, coupling to two neighbors on either side leads to exchange frustration. Apart from exchange frustration, non-bipartite topology and nonlocal couplings in a small-world networks could be reason for anomalous relaxation. The distribution of trap times in asymptotic regime has a long tail as well. The dependence of temporal evolution of persistence on initial conditions is studied and a scaling form for persistence after waiting time is proposed. We present a simple possible model for this behavior.

Synchronized clusters in coupled map networks: Self-organized and driven phase synchronization

Abstract:We study the synchronization of coupled maps on a variety of networks including regular one and two dimensional networks, scale free networks, small world networks, tree networks, and random networks. For small coupling strengths nodes show turbulent behavior but form phase synchronized clusters as coupling increases. We identify two different ways of cluster formation, self-organized clusters which have mostly intra-cluster couplings and driven clusters which have mostly inter-cluster couplings. The synchronized clusters may be of dominant self-organized type, dominant driven type or mixed type depending on the type of network and the parameters of the dynamics. There are some nodes of the floating type that show intermittent behaviour between getting attached to some clusters and evolving independently. The residence times of a floating node in a synchronized cluster show an exponential distribution. We define different states of the coupled dynamics by considering the number and type of synchronized clusters. For the local dynamics governed by the logistic map we study the phase diagram in the plane of the coupling constant ($\epsilon$) and the logistic map parameter ($\mu$). For large coupling strengths and nonlinear coupling we find that the scale free networks and the Caley tree networks lead to better cluster formation than the other types of networks with the same average connectivity. For most of our study we use the number of connections of the order of the number of nodes which allows us to distinguish between the two mechanisms of cluster formation. As the number of connections increases the number of nodes forming clusters and the size of the clusters in general increase.

Abstract:We investigate a coupled logistic lattice system with complete unidirectional coupling. A new type of spatial-temporal intermittency, we term it travelling chaos wave, appears when the coupling strength is in a suitable range, and the annihilation of two chaos waves is observed. The chaotic motion in the spatial-temporal intermittency is 'logistic' in term of first-return maps and first-order variability diagrams [1]. The driver of the lattices (the first element) is investigated particularly. Its logistic parameter is important for the chaos wave to propagate. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We revisit the globally coupled map lattice (GCML). We show that in the so called turbulent regime various periodic cluster attractor states are formed even though the coupling between the maps are very small relative to the non-linearity in the element maps. Most outstanding is a maximally symmetric three cluster attractor in period three motion (MSCA) due to the foliation of the period three window of the element logistic maps. An analytic approach is proposed which explains successfully the systematics of various periodicity manifestations in the turbulent regime. The linear stability of the period three cluster attractors is investigated.

Abstract:We study coupled Gauss maps in one dimension with nearest-neighbor interactions. We observe transitions from spatiotemporal chaos to period-3 states in a coarse-grained sense and synchronized period-3 states. Synchronized fixed points are frequently observed in one dimension. However, synchronized periodic states are rare. The obvious reason is that it is very easy to create defects in one dimension. We characterize all transitions using the following order parameter. Let x∗ be the fixed point of the map. The values above (below) x∗ are classified as +1 (−1) spins. We expect all sites to return to the same band after three time steps for a coarse-grained periodic or three-period state. We define the flip rate F(t) as the fraction of sites i such that si(3t−3)≠si(t). It is zero in the coarse-grained periodic state. This state may or may not be synchronized. We observe three different transitions. (a) If different sites reach different bands, the transition is in the directed-percolation universality class. (b) If all sites reach the same band, we find an Ising-type transition. (c) A synchronized period-3 state where a new exponent is observed. We also study the finite-size scaling at critical points. The exponents obtained indicate that the synchronized period-3 transition is in a new universality class.

Abstract:In this paper, we study intermittent behaviors of coupled piecewise-expanding map lattices with two nodes and a weak coupling. We show that the successive phase transition between ordered and disordered phases occurs for almost every orbit. That is, we prove lim inf_n→∞| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|=0 and lim sup_n→∞| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|≥ c_0>0, where x_1(n), x_2(n) correspond to the coordinates of two nodes at the iterative step n. We also prove the same conclusion for weakly coupled tent-map lattices with any multi-nodes.

Abstract:We study a family of diffusively coupled chaotic maps on periodic d-dimensional square lattices. Even and odd sub-lattices are updated alternately, introducing an effective delay. As the coupling strength is increased, the system undergoes a first order phase transition from a multi-stable to a synchronized phase. Further increase in coupling strength shows de-synchronization where the phase space splits into two ergodic regions. We argue that the de-synchronization transition is discontinuous for piece-wise linear maps, and is continuous for non-linear maps which are differentiable.

Abstract:The concept of q-deformation has been expanded in a variety of situations including q-deformed nonlinear maps. Coupled q-deformed logistic maps with positive and negative q-diffusive coupling are investigated. The transition to state of synchronized fixed point in the thermodynamic limit for random initial conditions is studied as dynamic phase transitions. Though rare for one-dimensional maps, q-deformed maps show multistability. For weak coupling, the synchronized state may not be observed in the thermodynamic limit with random initial conditions even if it is linearly stable. Thus multistability persists. However, for large lattices with random initial conditions, five well-defined critical points are observed where the transition to a synchronized state occurs. Two of these show continuous phase transition. One of them is in the directed percolation universality class. In another case, the order parameter shows power-law decay superposed with oscillations on a logarithmic scale at the critical point and does not match with known universality classes.

Abstract:A regime of coexistence of asynchronous and clustered dynamics is analyzed for globally coupled homogeneous and heterogeneous inhibitory networks of quadratic integrate-and-fire (QIF) neurons subject to Gaussian noise. The analysis is based on accurate extensive simulations and complemented by a mean-field description in terms of low-dimensional next generation neural mass models for heterogeneously distributed synaptic couplings. The asynchronous regime is observable at low noise and becomes unstable via a sub-critical Hopf bifurcation at sufficiently large noise. This gives rise to a coexistence region between the asynchronous and the clustered regime. The clustered phase is characterized by population bursts in the γ-range (30- 120 Hz), where neurons are split in two equally populated clusters firing in alternation. This clustering behavior is quite peculiar: despite the global activity being essentially periodic, single neurons display switching between the two clusters due to heterogeneity and/or noise.

Abstract:The Kuramoto model with mixed signs of couplings is known to produce a traveling-wave synchronized state. Here, we consider an abrupt synchronization transition from the incoherent state to the traveling-wave state through a long-lasting metastable state with large fluctuations. Our explanation of the metastability is that the dynamic flow remains within a limited region of phase space and circulates through a few active states bounded by saddle and stable fixed points. This complex flow generates a long-lasting critical behavior, a signature of a hybrid phase transition. We show that the long-lasting period can be controlled by varying the density of inhibitory/excitatory interactions. We discuss a potential application of this transition behavior to the recovery process of human consciousness.
Synchronization transition in space-time chaos in the presence of quenched disorder

Abstract:Synchronization of two replicas of coupled map lattices for continuous maps is known to be in the multiplicative noise universality class. We study this transition in the presence of quenched disorder in coupling. The disorder is identical in both replicas. We study one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and globally coupled logistic and tent maps. We observe a clear second-order transition with new exponents. The order parameter decays as $t^{-\delta}$ and $\delta$ depends on the map and its parameters. The asymptotic order parameter for $\Delta$ distance from a critical point grows as $\Delta^{\beta}$ with $\beta=\delta$. The quenched disorder in coupling is a relevant perturbation for the replica synchronization of coupled map lattices. The critical exponents are different from those of the multiplicative noise universality class. However, it does not depend on dimensionality if the transition is continuous for the cases studied.

Abstract:In networked systems, the interplay between the dynamics of individual subsystems and their network interactions has been found to generate multistability in various contexts. Despite its ubiquity, the specific mechanisms and ingredients that give rise to multistability from such interplay remain poorly understood. In a network of coupled excitable units, we show that this interplay generating multistability occurs through a competition between the units' transient dynamics and their coupling. Specifically, the diffusive coupling between the units manages to reinject them in the excitability region of their individual state space and effectively trap them there. We show that this trapping mechanism leads to the coexistence of multiple types of oscillations: periodic, quasiperiodic, and even chaotic, although the units separately do not oscillate. Interestingly, we show that the attractors emerge through different types of bifurcations - in particular, the periodic attractors emerge through either saddle-node of limit cycles bifurcations or homoclinic bifurcations - but in all cases the reinjection mechanism is present.

Abstract:In this work we investigate the spatiotemporal behaviour of lattices of coupled chaotic logistic maps, where the coupling between sites has a nonlinear form. We show that the stable range of the spatiotemporal fixed point state is significantly enhanced for increasingly nonlinear coupling. We demonstrate this through numerical simulations and linear stability analysis of the synchronized fixed point. Lastly, we show that these results also hold in coupled map lattices where the nodal dynamics is given by the Gauss Map, Sine Circle Map and the Tent Map.

Abstract:This note is a brief review of the analysis of long transients in dynamical systems. The problem of long transients arose in many disciplines, from physical and chemical kinetic to biology and even social sciences. Detailed analysis of singularities of various `relaxation times' associated long transients with bifurcations of $\omega$-limit sets, homoclinic structures (intersections of $\alpha$- and $\omega$-limit sets) and other peculiarities of dynamics. This review was stimulated by the analysis of anomalously long transients in ecology published recently by A. Morozov and S. Petrovskii with co-authors.
