Abstract:Plerions represent ideal laboratories for the search for neutron stars, the study of their relativistic winds, and their interaction with their surrounding supernova ejecta and/or the interstellar medium. As well, they are widely believed to represent efficient engines for particle acceleration up to the knee of the cosmic ray spectrum (at about 1E15 eV). Multi-wavelength observations from the radio to the highest TeV energies, combined with modelling, have opened a new window to study these objects, and particularly shed light on their intrinsic properties, diversity, and evolution. High-resolution X-ray observations are further revealing the structure and sites for shock acceleration. The missing shells in the majority of these objects remain puzzling, and the presence of plerions around highly magnetized neutron stars is still questionable. I review the current status and statistics of observations of plerionic supernova remnants (SNRs), highlighting combined radio and X-ray observations of a growing class of atypical, non Crab-like, plerionic SNRs in our Galaxy. I will also briefly describe the latest developments to our high-energy SNRs catalogue recently released to the community, and finally highlight the key questions to be addressed in this field with future high-energy missions, including Astro-H in the very near future.

Stacked clusters of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules

Abstract:Clusters of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are modelled using explicit all-atom potentials using a rigid body approximation. The PAH's considered range from pyrene (C10H8) to circumcoronene (C54H18), and clusters containing between 2 and 32 molecules are investigated. In addition to the usual repulsion-dispersion interactions, electrostatic point-charge interactions are incorporated, as obtained from density functional theory calculations. The general electrostatic distribution in neutral or singly charged PAH's is reproduced well using a fluctuating charges analysis, which provides an adequate description of the multipolar distribution. Global optimization is performed using a variety of methods, including basin-hopping and parallel tempering Monte Carlo. We find evidence that stacking the PAH molecules generally yields the most stable motif. A structural transition between one-dimensional stacks and three-dimensional shapes built from mutiple stacks is observed at larger sizes, and the threshold for this transition increases with the size of the monomer. Larger aggregates seem to evolve toward the packing observed for benzene in <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bulk.Difficulties" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> met in optimizing these clusters are analysed in terms of the strong anisotropy of the molecules. We also discuss segregation in heterogeneous clusters and vibrational properties in the context of astrophysical observations.

Pulse Profiles, Spectra and Polarization Characteristics of Non-Thermal Emissions from the Crab-Like Pulsars

Abstract:We discuss non-thermal emission mechanism of the Crab-like pulsars with both a two-dimensional electrodynamical study and a three-dimensional model. We investigate the emission process in the outer gap accelerator. In the two-dimensional electrodynamical study, we solve the Poisson equation of the accelerating electric field in the outer gap and the equation of motion of the primary particles with the synchrotron and the curvature radiation process and the pair-creation process. We show a solved gap structure which produces a consistent gamma-ray spectrum with EGRET observation. Based on the two-dimensional model, we conduct a three-dimensional emission model to calculate the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton processes of the secondary pairs produced outside the outer gap. We calculate the pulse profiles, the phase-resolved spectra and the polarization characteristics in optical to $\gamma$-ray bands to compare the observation of the Crab pulsar and PSR B0540-69. For the Crab pulsar, we find that the outer gap geometry extending from near the stellar surface to near the light cylinder produces a complex morphology change of the pulse profiles as a function of the photon energy. This predicted morphology change is quite similar with that of the observations. The calculated phase-resolved spectra are consistent with the data through optical to the $\gamma$-ray bands. We demonstrate that the 10$\sim$20 % of the polarization degree in the optical emissions from the Crab pulsar and the Vela pulsar are explained by the synchrotron emissions with the particle gyration motion.

Abstract:The supernova remnant (SNR) 0540–69.3, twin of the Crab Nebula, offers an excellent opportunity to study the continuum emission from a young pulsar and pulsar wind nebula (PWN). We present observations taken with the Very Large Telescope instruments MUSE and X-shooter in the wavelength range 3000–25000 Å, which allow us to study spatial variations of the optical spectra, along with the first near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of the source. We model the optical spectra with a power law (PL) F ν ∝ ν −α and find clear spatial variations (including a torus–jet structure) in the spectral index across the PWN. Generally, we find spectral hardening toward the outer parts, from α ∼ 1.1 to ∼0.1, which may indicate particle reacceleration by the PWN shock at the inner edge of the ejecta or alternatively time variability of the pulsar wind. The optical–NIR spectrum of the PWN is best described by a broken PL, confirming that several breaks are needed to model the full spectral energy distribution of the PWN, and suggesting the presence of more than one particle population. Finally, subtracting the PWN contribution from the pulsar spectrum we find that the spectrum is best described with a broken-PL model with a flat and a positive spectral index, in contrast to the Crab pulsar that has a negative spectral index and no break in the optical. This might imply that pulsar differences propagate to the PWN spectra.

Abstract:We review our high-time-resolution radio observations of the Crab pulsar and compare our data to a variety of models for the emission physics. The Main Pulse and the Low-Frequency Interpulse come from regions somewhere in the high-altitude emission zones (caustics) that also produce pulsed X-ray and gamma-ray emission. Although no emission model can fully explain these two components, the most likely models suggest they arise from a combination of beam-driven instabilities, coherent charge bunching and strong electromagnetic turbulence. Because the radio power fluctuates on a wide range of timescales, we know the emission zones are patchy and dynamic. It is tempting to invoke unsteady pair creation in high-altitude gaps as source of the variability, but current pair cascade models cannot explain the densities required by any of the likely models. It is harder to account for the mysterious High-Frequency Interpulse. We understand neither its origin within the magnetosphere nor the striking emission bands in its dynamic spectrum. The most promising models are based on analogies with solar zebra bands, but they require unusual plasma structures which are not part of our standard picture of the magnetosphere. We argue that radio observations can reveal much about the upper magnetosphere, but work is required before the models can address all of the data.

Abstract:We present similar to 400 ks NuSTAR observations of the northeast (NE) and southwest (SW) nonthermal limbs of the Galactic SNR SN1006. We discovered three sources with X-ray emission detected at greater than or similar to 50 keV. Two of them are identified as background active galactic nuclei. We extract the NuSTAR spectra from a few regions along the nonthermal limbs and jointly analyze them with the XMM-Newton spectra and the radio data. The broadband radio/X-ray spectra can be well described with a synchrotron emission model from a single population of CR electrons with a power-law energy distribution and an exponential cutoff. The power-law index of the electron particle distribution function (PDF) is approximate to 1.88-1.95 for both the NE and SW limbs, and we do not find significant evidence for a variation of this index at different energy (curvature). There are significant spatial variations of the synchrotron emission parameters. The highest energy electrons are accelerated in regions with the lowest expansion velocity, which is opposite to what has been found in Tycho's supernova remnant. In addition to a gradual steepening of synchrotron emission from the center of the nonthermal limbs to larger azimuthal angles, we also find that both the emission spectrum and the PDF are significantly flatter in three regions in the SW limb where the shock encounters a higher density ambient medium. The NE limb also shows significantly higher cutoff energy in the PDF than the SW limb. By comparing with the roughly symmetric TeV emission and largely asymmetric GeV emission from the two nonthermal limbs, we conclude that the asymmetry in the ambient medium and magnetic fields may have largely modified the acceleration and emission of CR leptons.

Abstract:We outline a model of the Crab Pulsar Wind Nebula with two different populations of synchrotron emitting particles, arising from two different acceleration mechanisms: (i) Component-I due to Fermi-I acceleration at the equatorial portion of the termination shock, with particle spectral index $p_I \approx 2.2$ above the injection break corresponding to $\gamma_{wind} \sigma_{wind} \sim 10^5$, peaking in the UV ($\gamma_{wind} \sim 10^2$ is the bulk Lorentz factor of the wind, $\sigma _{wind} \sim 10^3$ is wind magnetization); (ii) Component-II due to acceleration at reconnection layers in the bulk of the turbulent Nebula, with particle index $p_{II} \approx 1.6$. The model requires relatively slow but highly magnetized wind. For both components the overall cooling break is in the infra-red at $\sim 0.01$ eV, so that the Component-I is in the fast cooling regime (cooling frequency below the peak frequency). In the optical band Component-I produces emission with the cooling spectral index of $\alpha_o \approx 0.5$, softening towards the edges due to radiative losses. Above the cooling break, in the optical, UV and X-rays, Component-I mostly overwhelms Component-II. We hypothesize that acceleration at large-scale current sheets in the turbulent nebula (Component-II) extends to the synchrotron burn-off limit of $\epsilon_s \approx 100$ MeV. Thus in our model acceleration in turbulent reconnection (Component-II) can produce both hard radio spectra and occasional gamma-ray flares. This model may be applicable to a broader class of high energy astrophysical objects, like AGNe and GRB jets, where often radio electrons form a different population from the high energy electrons.
Implications of the X-Ray Properties of Pulsar Nebulae

Abstract:A plausible model for the Crab Nebula is one in which a particle dominated, highly relativistic wind from the pulsar passes through a shock front in which the particles attain a power law energy distribution. The electrons and positrons lose energy radiating synchrotron emission. Here, a one zone version of the model is developed and applied to observations of X-ray pulsar nebulae. Efficient conversion of pulsar spin-down power to X-ray luminosity is expected if the observed electrons are in the synchrotron cooling regime and their energy spectrum is similar to that in the Crab Nebula. In this case, the relation between X-ray luminosity and pulsar spin-down power depends only weakly on the model parameters. The dependence is stronger for a steeper particle spectrum, as appears to be present in N157B, and the efficiency of X-ray production can be lower. If the electrons are not in the cooling regime, the X-ray luminosity can be low, as appears to be the case for the compact nebula around the Vela pulsar. Slow cooling is likely to be caused by a sub-equipartition magnetic field in the radiating region. Observations can place constraints on the uncertain physics of relativistic MHD shocks. The model is related to those developed for gamma-ray burst afterglows.

Crab Pulsar: IXPE Observations Reveal Unified Polarization Properties Across Optical and Soft X-Ray Bands

Abstract:We present a phase-dependent analysis of the polarized emission from the Crab pulsar based on three sets of observations by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). We found that a phenomenological model involving a simple linear transformation of the Stokes parameters adequately describes the IXPE data. This model enables us to establish, for the first time, a connection between the polarization properties of the Crab pulsar in the optical and soft X-ray bands, suggesting a common underlying emission mechanism across these bands. In particular, the phase-dependent polarization degree in X-rays for pure pulsar emission shows similar features but is reduced by a factor $\approx (0.46-0.56)$ compared to the optical band, implying an energy-dependent polarized emission. In addition, using this model, we study the polarization angle swing in X-rays and identify a potentially variable phase-shift at the interpulse relative to the optical band, alongside a phase-shift marginally consistent with zero persisting at the main pulse. While the variability presents a new challenge for theoretical interpretation, our findings suggest that the emission mechanism for the main pulse is likely located far from the neutron star surface, perhaps near or beyond the light cylinder, rather than operating in the inner magnetosphere where vacuum birefringence is expected to be at work. Ignoring the phase-shifts would result in identical phase-dependent polarization angles between the optical and X-ray bands for pure pulsar emission.

Phase-resolved polarization properties of the pulsar striped wind synchrotron emission

Abstract:Since the launch of the Fermi telescope more than five years ago, many new gamma-ray pulsars have been discovered with intriguing properties challenging our current understanding of pulsar physics. Observation of the Crab pulsar furnish today a broad band analysis of the pulsed spectrum with phase-resolved variability allowing to refine existing model to explain pulse shape, spectra and polarization properties. The latter gives inside into the geometry of the emitting region as well as on the structure of the magnetic field. Based on an exact analytical solution of the striped wind with finite current sheet thickness, we analyze in detail the phase-resolved polarization variability emanating from the synchrotron radiation. We assume that the main contribution to the wind emissivity comes from a thin transition layer where the dominant toroidal magnetic field reverses its polarity, the so-called current sheet. The resulting radiation is mostly linearly polarized. In the off-pulse region, the electric vector lies in the direction of the projection onto the plane of the sky of the rotation axis of the pulsar. This property is unique to the wind model and in good agreement with the Crab data. Other properties such as a reduced degree of polarization and a characteristic sweep of the polarization angle within the pulses are also reproduced. These properties are qualitatively unaffected by variations of the wind Lorentz factor, the lepton injection power law index, the contrast in hot and cold particle, the obliquity of the pulsar and the inclination of the line of sight.

Synchrotron polarization with a partially random magnetic field: General approach and application to X-ray polarization from supernova remnants

Abstract:Diagnostics based on the polarization properties of the synchrotron emission can provide precious information on both the ordered structure and the random level of the magnetic field. While this issue has already been analyzed in the radio band, the polarization data recently obtained by the mission IXPE have shown the need to extend this analysis to the X-ray band. While our immediate targets are young supernova remnants, the scope of this analysis is wider. Our aim is to extend the analysis to particle energy distributions more complex than a power law, and to investigate a wider range of cases involving a composition of ordered and random magnetic fields. Since an analytical approach is only possible in a limited number of cases, we devised for this purpose an optimized numerical scheme, and we directly used it to investigate particle energy distributions in the form of a power law with an exponential or super-exponential cutoff. We also considered a general combination of an ordered field plus an anisotropic random component. We show that the previously derived analytic formulae, valid for power-law distributions, may also be good approximations of the polarization degree in the more general case with a cutoff, as typically seen in X-rays. We explicitly analyzed the young supernova remnants SN 1006, Tycho, and Cas A. In particular, for SN 1006 we proved the consistency between the radio and X-ray polarization degrees, favoring the case of a predominantly random field with an anisotropic distribution. In addition, for the power-law case we investigated the effect of a compression on ordered and on random magnetic field components, aimed at describing the mid-age radio supernova remnants. This work allows a more efficient exploitation of radio and X-ray measurements of the synchrotron polarization, and is addressed to present observations with IXPE and to future projects.

Polarization of the Crab pulsar and nebula as observed by the Integral/IBIS telescope

Abstract:Neutron stars generate powerful winds of relativistic particles that form bright synchrotron nebulae around them. Polarimetry provides a unique insight into the geometry and magnetic configuration of the wind, but high-energy measurements have failed until recently. The Integral-IBIS telescope has been used in its Compton mode to search for linearly polarized emission for energies above 200 keV from the Crab nebula. The asymmetries in the instrument response are small and we obtain evidences for a strongly polarized signal at an angle parallel to the pulsar rotation axis. This result confirms the detection recently reported by Dean et al. (2008), and extends the polarization measure for all the pulsar's phases. The hard X-ray/soft $\gamma$-ray observations therefore probe the inner jets or equatorial flow of the wind. The achieved sensitivity opens a new window for polarimetric studies at energies above 200 keV.

Spectrum and extension of the inverse-Compton emission of the Crab Nebula from a combined Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. analysis

Abstract:The Crab Nebula is a unique laboratory for studying the acceleration of electrons and positrons through their non-thermal radiation. Observations of very-high-energy rays from the Crab Nebula have provided important constraints for modelling its broadband emission. We present the first fully self-consistent analysis of the Crab Nebula's emission between GeV and sim TeV that is, over five orders of magnitude in energy. Using the open-source software package we combined yr of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and h of High Energy Stereoscopic System ( data at the event level and provide a measurement of the spatial extension of the nebula and its energy spectrum. We find evidence for a shrinking of the nebula with increasing energy. Furthermore, we fitted several phenomenological models to the measured data, finding that none of them can fully describe the spatial extension and the spectral energy distribution at the same time. Especially the extension measured at TeV energies appears too large when compared to the X-ray emission. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field between the pulsar wind termination shock and the dust torus, and we conclude that the magnetic field strength decreases with increasing distance from the pulsar. We complement our study with a careful assessment of systematic uncertainties.

The location of the Crab pulsar emission region: Restrictions on synchrotron emission models

Abstract:Recent observations of the Crab pulsar show no evidence for a spectral break in the infrared regime. It is argued that the observations are consistent with a power-law spectrum in the whole observable infrared - optical range. This is taken as the starting point for an evaluation of how self-consistent incoherent synchrotron models fare in a comparison with observations. Inclusion of synchrotron self-absorption proves important as does the restriction on the observed size of the emission region imposed by the relativistic beaming thought to define the pulse profile. It is shown that the observations can be used to derive two independent constraints on the distance from the neutron star to the emission region; in addition to a direct lower limit, an indirect measure is obtained from an upper limit to the magnetic field strength. Both of these limits indicate that the emission region is located at a distance considerably larger than the light cylinder radius. The implications of this result are discussed and it is emphasized that, in order for standard incoherent synchrotron models to fit inside the light cylinder, rather special physical conditions need to be invoked.

Recent Progress in Studies of Pulsar Wind Nebulae

Abstract:The synchrotron-emitting nebulae formed by energetic winds from young pulsars provide information on a wide range phenomena that contribute to their structure. High resolution X-ray observations reveal jets and toroidal structures in many systems, along with knot-like structures whose emission is observed to be time-variable. Large-scale filaments seen in optical and radio images mark instability regions where the expanding nebulae interact with the surrounding ejecta, and spectral studies reveal the presence of these ejecta in the form of thermal X-ray emission. Infrared studies probe the frequency region where evolutionary and magnetic field effects conspire to change the broadband synchrotron spectrum dramatically, and studies of the innermost regions of the nebulae provide constraints on the spectra of particles entering the nebula. At the highest energies, TeV gamma-ray observations provide a probe of the spectral region that, for low magnetic fields, corresponds to particles with energies just below the X-ray-emitting regime. Here I summarize the structure of pulsar wind nebulae and review several new observations that have helped drive a recent resurgence in theoretical modeling of these systems.

Abstract:In a Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN), the lifetime of inverse Compton emitting electrons exceeds the lifetime of its progenitor pulsar, but it exceeds also the age of the electrons that emit via synchrotron radiation; i.e. while the PWN grows older, it can remain bright in IC, whereas its GeV-TeV gamma-ray (for $10^5-10^6$ years) flux remains high for timescales much larger than the Pulsar lifetime and the PWN visible in X-rays. The shell-type remnant of the supernova explosion that led to the formation of the pulsar also has a much shorter lifetime. In this scenario, the magnetic field in the cavity induced by the wind of the progenitor star plays a crucial role, but also the magnetic field in the interstellar medium cannot be negligible and its outward decrease away from the Galactic disk further reduces their X-ray brightness. This is in line with the discovery of several unidentified sources in the TeV gamma-ray band without X-ray counterparts. Moreover, the consequences are important also in order to reinterprete the detection of starburst galaxies in the TeV gamma-ray band considering a leptonic origin of the gamma-ray signal.

Abstract:We present a detailed X-ray investigation of a region (S1) exhibiting non-thermal X-ray emission within the supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 37B hosting the magnetar CXOU J171405.7$-$381031. Previous analyses modeled this emission with a power law (PL), inferring various values for the photon index ($\Gamma$) and absorbing column density ($N_{\rm H}$). Based on these, S1 was suggested to be the SNR shell, a background pulsar wind nebula (PWN), or an interaction region between the SNR and a molecular cloud. Our analysis of a larger dataset favors a steepening (broken or curved PL) spectrum over a straight PL, with the best-fit broken power-law (BPL) parameters of $\Gamma=1.23\pm0.23$ and $2.24\pm0.16$ below and above a break at $5.57\pm0.52$ keV, respectively. However, a simple PL or srcut model cannot be definitively ruled out. For the BPL model, the inferred $N_{\rm H}=(4.08\pm0.72)\times 10^{22}\rm \ cm^{-2}$ towards S1 is consistent with that of the SNR, suggesting a physical association. The BPL-inferred spectral break $\Delta \Gamma \approx 1$ and hard $\Gamma$ can be naturally explained by a non-thermal bremsstrahlung (NTB) model. We present an evolutionary NTB model that reproduces the observed spectrum, which indicates the presence of sub-relativistic electrons within S1. However, alternate explanations for S1, an unrelated PWN or the SNR shock with unusually efficient acceleration, cannot be ruled out. We discuss these explanations and their implications for gamma-ray emission from CTB 37B, and describe future observations that could settle the origin of S1.

Abstract:The vast majority of Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe) present in the Galaxy is formed by middle-aged systems characterized by a strong interaction of the PWN itself with the supernova remnant (SNR). Unfortunately, modelling these systems can be quite complex and numerically expensive, due to the non-linearity of the PWN-SNR evolution even in the simple 1D / one-zone case when the reverse shock of the SNR reaches the PWN, and the two begin to interact (and reverberation starts). Here we introduce a new numerical technique that couples the numerical efficiency of the one-zone thin shell approach with the reliability of a full ``lagrangian'' evolution, able to correctly reproduce the PWN-SNR interaction during the reverberation and to consistently evolve the particle spectrum beyond. Based on our previous findings, we show that our novel strategy resolves many of the uncertainties present in previous approaches, as the arbitrariness in the SNR structure, and ensure a robust evolution, compatible with results that can be obtained with more complex 1D dynamical approaches. Our approach enable us for the first time to provide reliable spectral models of the later compression phases in the evolution of PWNe. While in general we found that the compression is less extreme than that obtained without such detailed dynamical considerations, leading to the formation of less structured spectral energy distributions, we still find that a non negligible fraction of PWNe might experience a super-efficient phase, with the optical and/or X-ray luminosity exceeding the spin-down one.

Abstract:Context{The high energy emission regions of rotation powered pulsars are studied using folded light curve (FLCs) and phase resolved spectra (PRS).} aims{This work uses the NICER observatory to obtain the highest resolution FLC and PRS of the Crab pulsar at soft X-ray energies.} methods{NICER has accumulated about 347 ksec of data on the Crab pulsar. The data are processed using the standard analysis pipeline. Stringent filtering is done for spectral analysis. The individual detectors are calibrated in terms of long time light curve (LTLC), raw spectrum and deadtime. The arrival times of the photons are referred to the solar system's barycenter and the rotation frequency $\nu$ and its time derivative $\dot \nu$ are used to derive the rotation phase of each photon.} results{The LTLCs, raw spectra and deadtimes of the individual detectors are statistically similar; the latter two show no evolution with epoch; detector deadtime is independent of photon energy. The deadtime for the Crab pulsar, taking into account the two types of deadtime, is only approx 7% to 8% larger than that obtained using the cleaned events. Detector 00 behaves slightly differently from the rest, but can be used for spectral work. The PRS of the two peaks of the Crab pulsar are obtained at a resolution of better than 1/512 in rotation phase. The FLC very close to the first peak rises slowly and falls faster. The spectral index of the PRS is almost constant very close to the first peak.} conclusions{The high resolution FLC and PRS of the {peaks} of the Crab pulsar provide important constraints for the formation of caustics in the emission zone.}
