Abstract:The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) that spans the UV-IR band originates from direct and dust-reprocessed starlight integrated over the history of the Universe. EBL measurements are very challenging due to foreground emission like the zodiacal light and interplanetary dust emission. Indeed, some optical/NIR direct measurements overpredict EBL models based on galaxy counts. On the other hand, there is some debate on possible additional components of the Optical-NIR photon density: e.g., population-III stars, axion-photon decay, direct collapse of black holes, intra-halo light etc. Owing to the absorption of Very High Energy (VHE) $\gamma$ rays by interaction with EBL photons, we study the prospects of accommodating an additional population of EBL sources in the Optical-NIR band on top of the standard galaxy-count--based component. To this aim we use 105 VHE spectra of 37 blazars with known redshifts, $0.03<z<0.94$. We correct the observed spectra for absorption by our model EBL. By requiring the intrinsic spectra to be non-concave and with a VHE spectral index $>$1.5, we estimate, at different wavelengths, upper limits to the additional low energy photon fields which would contribute to the absorption of $\gamma$-rays. Considering these limits we suggest that there is room for photons from Pop III stars and axion-like particle (ALP) annihilation. However, these additional hypothetical photon fields are bound to fall significantly below direct published EBL measurements by several instruments, and therefore our limits are either in tension or even inconsistent with such measurements.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The extragalactic background light (EBL) in the infrared to ultraviolet bands partly absorbs very high energy (VHE; E ≥ 100 GeV) γ-ray photons travelling over cosmological distances via pair production. In this paper, to get stronger constraints on EBL, we use the deliberate selection of the EBL model and data of five BL Lacs with better statistics and the harder spectra to limit the EBL density and the radiation mechanism of BL Lacs. We constrain the upper limit of the EBL density by fitting the spectral energy distributions of TeV BL Lacs and find that our results are compatible with the published measurement, reaching 50 $\rm {nW \,m^{-2} \,sr^{-1}}$. We also obtain that the EBL is not necessarily transparent to VHE photons. We fix the intrinsic spectral index Γi of TeV BL Lacs as 1.0 and 1.5 under observation evidence and model assumption. Comparing the EBL density given by galaxy count and Spitzer observations, we then obtain that 1ES 1101−232 has Γi ≤ 1.0 and 1ES 0229+200 should have Γi not harder than 1.0. We demonstrate that the common radiation assumption of BL Lacs, in which the Γi is softer than 1.5, should be revisited. Furthermore, we propose that the upper EBL density could be given by fitting the hardest energy spectra of TeV BL Lacs.

Search for spectral features in extragalactic background light with gamma-ray telescopes

Abstract:Cumulative optical and infrared emission from galaxies accumulated over cosmological time scales, the extragalactic background light (EBL), could be probed by complementary techniques of direct observations and source counting in the visible and infrared as well as via its imprint on the signal of distant active galactic nuclei in gamma rays. We compare the visible and infrared measurements with the gamma-ray constraints and study if the discrepancies of the measurements with different methods could be due to the presence of features in the EBL spectrum that are localised in the micron wavelength range. We combined data on time-averaged spectra of selected blazars that were obtained by Fermi and ground-based gamma-ray telescopes. We also modelled the effect of absorption on EBL while allowing for the existence of a previously unaccounted spectral feature. We show that a previously reported 'excess' in EBL flux in the $\sim 1$~micron wavelength range is consistent with gamma-ray measurements, that is, if the excess has the form of a narrow feature of the width $\delta \lambda < \lambda$ and an overall flux of up to 15 nW/(m$^2$ sr) above the 'minimal' EBL, which is estimated from the visible and infrared source counts. Such 'bump-like' spectral features could originate, for example, from decaying dark-matter particles, or either axions or peculiar astrophysical processes in the course of star-formation history. We discuss the possibilities for the search of spectral features in the EBL with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA).

Simultaneous X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Observations of TeV Blazars: Testing Synchro-Compton Emission Models and Probing the Infrared Extragalactic Background

Abstract:The last years have seen a revolution in ground-based gamma-ray detectors. We can now detect the spectra of nearby TeV blazars like Mrk 421 and 501 out to approximately 20 TeV, and during the strongest flares, we can now follow fluctuations in these spectra on timescales close to the shortest ones likely in these objects. We point out that this represents a unique opportunity. Using these and future detectors in combination with broadband X-ray satellites like SAX and RXTE, we will be able to simultaneously follow all significant X-ray/gamma-ray variations in a blazar's emission. This will provide the most stringent test yet of the synchrotron-Compton emission model for these objects. In preparation for the data to come, we present sample SSC model calculations using a fully self-consistent, accurate code to illustrate the variability behavior one might see (the range of behavior is wider than many expect) and to show how good timing information can probe physical conditions in the source. If the model works, i.e., if X-ray/TeV variations are consistent with being produced by a common electron distribution, then we show it is possible to robustly estimate the blazar's intrinsic TeV spectrum from its X-ray spectrum. Knowing this spectrum, we can then determine the level of absorption in the observed spectrum. Constraining this absorption, due to gamma-ray pair production on diffuse radiation, provides an important constraint on the infrared extragalactic background intensity. Without the intrinsic spectrum, we show that detecting absorption is very difficult and argue that Mrk 421 and 501, as close as they are, may already be absorbed by a factor 2 at approximately 3 TeV. This should not be ignored when fitting emission models to the spectra of these objects.

Abstract:Context. Measurements of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) are a fundamental source of information on the collective emission of cosmic sources. Aims. At infrared wavelengths, however, these measurements are precluded by the overwhelming dominance from Interplanetary Dust emission and the Galactic infrared foreground. Only at $\lambda > 300 \ \mu$m, where the foregrounds are minimal, has the Infrared EBL (IR EBL) been inferred from analysis of the COBE maps. The present paper aims to assess the possibility of evaluating the IR EBL from a few $\mu$m up to the peak of the emission at >100 $\mu$m using an indirect method that avoids the foreground problem. Methods. To this purpose we exploit the effect of pair-production from gamma-gamma interaction by considering the highest energy photons emitted by extragalactic sources and their interaction with the IR EBL photons. We simulate observations of a variety of low redshift emitters with the forthcoming Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) arrays (CTA in particular) and water Cherenkov observatories (LHAASO, HAWC, SWGO) to assess their suitability to constrain the EBL at such long wavelengths. Results. We find that, even under the most extremely favorable conditions of huge emission flares, extremely high-energy emitting blazars are not very useful for our purpose because they are much too distant (>100 Mpc the nearest ones, MKN 501 and MKN 421). Observations of more local Very High Energy (VHE) emitting AGNs, like low-redshift radio galaxies (M87, IC 310, Centaurus A), are better suited and will potentially allow us to constrain the EBL up to $\lambda \simeq 100\ \mu$m.

The Extrgalactic Gamma-Ray Background

Abstract:The COMPTEL and EGRET detectors aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory measured an extragalactic gamma-ray background extending from MeV energies up to about 100 GeV. Calculations performed making reasonable assumptions indicate that blazars can account for the background between about 10 MeV and at least 10 GeV. Below 30 MeV, the background flux and spectrum are not very well determined and a dedicated satellite detector will be required to remedy this situation. Below 10 MeV, supernovae and possibly AGN may contribute to the extragalactic background flux. Above 10 GeV, the role of blazars in contributing to the background is unclear because we do not have data on their spectra at these energies and because theoretical models predict that many of them will have spectra which should cut off in this energy range. At these higher energies, a new component, perhaps from topological defects, may contribute to the background, as well as X-ray selected BL Lac objects. The future GLAST detector should provide important data on the emission of extragalactic sources above 10 GeV and help resolve this issue. GLAST may also be able to detect the signature of intergalactic absorption by pair production interactions of background gamma-rays of energy above 20 GeV with starlight photons, this signature being a steepening of the background spectrum.

Abstract:The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is the main radiation field responsible for attenuating extragalactic gamma-ray emission at very high energies, but its precise spectral intensity is not fully determined. Therefore, disentangling propagation effects from the intrinsic spectral properties of gamma-ray sources (such as active galactic nuclei, AGN) is the primary challenge to interpret observations of these objects. We present a Bayesian and Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to simultaneously infer parameters characterizing the EBL and the intrinsic spectra in a combined fit of a set of sources, which has the advantage of easily incorporating the uncertainties of both sets of parameters into one another through marginalization of the posterior distribution. Taking a sample of synthetic blazars observed by the ideal CTA configuration, we study the effects on the EBL constraints of combining multiple observations and varying their exposure. We also apply the methodology to a set of 65 gamma-ray spectra of 36 different AGNs measured by current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo as a solution to the difficult task of sampling in spaces with a high number of parameters. We find robust constraints in the mid-IR region while simultaneously obtaining intrinsic spectral parameters for all of these objects. In particular, we identify Markarian 501 (Mkn 501) flare data (HEGRA/1997) as essential for constraining the EBL above 30 μm.

Prospects for Very High Energy Blazar Survey by the Next Generation Cherenkov Telescopes

Abstract:The prospects for future blazar surveys by next-generation very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray telescopes, such as Advanced Gamma-ray Imaging System (AGIS) and Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), are investigated using the latest model of blazar luminosity function and its evolution which is in good agreement with the flux and redshift distribution of observed blazars as well as the extragalactic gamma-ray background. We extend and improve the template of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) based on the blazar SED sequence paradigm, to make it reliable also in the VHE bands (above 100 GeV) by comparing with the existing VHE blazar data. Assuming the planned CTA sensitivities, a blind survey using a total survey time of ~100 hrs could detect ~3 VHE blazars, with larger expected numbers for wider/shallower surveys. We also discuss following-up of Fermi blazars. Detectability of VHE blazars in the plane of Fermi flux and redshift is presented, which would be useful for future survey planning. Prospects and strategies are discussed to constrain the extragalactic background light (EBL) by using the absorption feature of brightest blazar spectra, as well as cut-offs in the redshift distribution. We will be able to get useful constraints on EBL by VHE blazars at different redshifts ranging 0.3-1 TeV corresponding to z=0.10-0.36.

Extragalactic Background Light and Gamma-Ray Attenuation

Abstract:Data from (non-) attenuation of gamma rays from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma ray bursts (GRBs) give upper limits on the extragalactic background light (EBL) from the UV to the mid-IR that are only a little above the lower limits from observed galaxies. These upper limits now rule out some EBL models and purported observations, with improved data likely to provide even stronger constraints. We present EBL calculations both based on multiwavelength observations of thousands of galaxies and also based on semi-analytic models, and show that they are consistent with these lower limits from observed galaxies and with the gamma-ray upper limit constraints. Such comparisons "close the loop" on cosmological galaxy formation models, since they account for all the light, including that from galaxies too faint to see. We compare our results with those of other recent works, and discuss the implications of these new EBL calculations for gamma ray attenuation. Catching a few GRBs with groundbased atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (ACT) arrays or water Cherenkov detectors could provide important new constraints on the high-redshift star formation history of the universe.

Gev Emission from Tev Blazars and Intergalactic Magnetic Fields

Abstract:Several high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects such as Mrk 501 are strong TeV emitters. However, a significant fraction of the TeV gamma rays emitted are likely to be absorbed in interactions with the diffuse IR background, yielding electron-positron pairs. Hence, the observed TeV spectrum must be steeper than the intrinsic one. Using the recently derived intrinsic gamma-ray spectrum of Mrk 501 during its 1997 high state, we study the inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave photons by the resulting electron-positron pairs, which implies the existence of a hitherto undiscovered GeV emission. The typical duration of the GeV emission is determined by the flaring activity time and the energy-dependent magnetic deflection time. We numerically calculate the scattered photon spectrum for different intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strengths and find a spectral turnover and flare duration at GeV energies that are dependent on the field strength. We also estimate the scattered photon flux in the quiescent state of Mrk 501. The GeV flux levels predicted are consistent with existing EGRET upper limits and should be detectable above the synchrotron self-Compton component with the Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope for IGMFs less than or similar to 10(-16) G, as expected in voids. Such detections would provide constraints on the strength of weak IGMFs.

Abstract:The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object 1ES 0229+200 is a relatively distant (z = 0.1396), hard-spectrum (Gamma similar to 2.5), very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) emitting gamma-ray blazar. VHE measurements of this active galactic nucleus have been used to place constraints on the intensity of the extragalactic background light and the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). A multi-wavelength study of this object centered around VHE observations by Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is presented. This study obtained, over a period of three years, an 11.7 standard deviation detection and an average integral flux F(E > 300 GeV) = (23.3 +/- 2.8(stat) +/- 5.8(sys)) x 10(-9) photons m(-2) s(-1), or 1.7% of the Crab Nebula's flux (assuming the Crab Nebula spectrum measured by H. E. S. S). Supporting observations from Swift and RXTE are analyzed. The Swift observations are combined with previously published Fermi observations and the VHE measurements to produce an overall spectral energy distributionwhich is then modeled assuming one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton emission. The chi(2) probability of the TeV flux being constant is 1.6%. This, when considered in combination with measured variability in the X-ray band, and the demonstrated variability of many TeV blazars, suggests that the use of blazars such as 1ES 0229+200 for IGMF studies may not be straightforward and challenges models that attribute hard TeV spectra to secondary gamma-ray production along the line of sight.

Abstract:The extragalactic background light (EBL), a diffuse photon field in the optical and infrared range, is a record of radiative processes over the Universe's history. Spectral measurements of blazars at very high energies (>100 GeV) enable the reconstruction of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the EBL, as the blazar spectra are modified by redshift- and energy-dependent interactions of the gamma-ray photons with the EBL. The spectra of 14 VERITAS-detected blazars are included in a new measurement of the EBL SED that is independent of EBL SED models. The resulting SED covers an EBL wavelength range of 0.56–56 μm, and is in good agreement with lower limits obtained by assuming that the EBL is entirely due to radiation from cataloged galaxies.
TeV bayesian study of the extragalactic background light

Abstract:The extragalactic background light (EBL) is the aggregate of all optical and infrared emissions from thermal processes since the cosmic dark ages. While the integrated light of galaxies is expected to be the main contribution to the EBL, recent measurements beyond Pluto's orbit from the New Horizon probe show a 4$\sigma$ excess in the optical band. This tension can be studied within observational gamma-ray cosmology, by reconstructing EBL-induced absorption features in the gamma-ray spectra of extragalactic sources at very-high energies (VHE, $E>100$ GeV). Gamma-ray studies of the EBL remain limited by the size of the spectral corpora and by the uncertainties on the shape of the spectra emitted at the sources. We developed a new analysis method that aims to tackle these limitations. Unlike existing studies, we employ a fully Bayesian framework, which allows us to remove arbitrary criteria for selecting intrinsic spectral models. Such an approach further enables marginalization over systematics of instrumental origin, such as the uncertainty on the energy scale of current-generation VHE observatories. In this contribution, we apply our method to the most extensive catalog of extragalactic VHE spectra to date, STeVECat. We present preliminary constraints on the energy density of the EBL at redshift $z=0$, obtained with 259 archival VHE spectra from 56 extragalactic sources with known redshift.

TeV Detection of the Extreme HSP Blazar RBS 1366 by VERITAS

Abstract:Extreme high-synchrotron-peak blazars (EHSPs) are postulated as the most efficient and extreme particle accelerators in the universe but remain enigmatic as a possible new class of TeV gamma-ray blazars. Blazars are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with jets of relativistic particles that generate non-thermal emission pointed along the line-of-sight. Their spectral energy distribution (SED) are characterized by synchrotron and inverse-Compton peaks, indicating acceleration of leptonic and possibly hadronic particle populations in the jet. EHSPs are characterized by a peak synchrotron frequency > 1017 Hz with their Compton peak expected to fall in the TeV range. Indeed, the handful of EHSPs detected by Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) have presented challenges where some may be a high-frequency extension of the blazar sequence while others peaking around 10 TeV may represent a different class of TeV emitters. Detections of the high-energy and very-high-energy (HE; E > 100 MeV, VHE; E > 100 GeV) components of the Compton peak will play an important role in constraining the acceleration model derived from the SED. We present the discovery of TeV emission from RBS 1366, a candidate EHSP, by the VERITAS observatory. Using HE and VHE data from the Fermi-LAT and VERITAS observatories, respectively, we characterize the detection by providing an SED and model fit in the context of other EHSP candidates. Our work confirms the status of RBS 1366 as an EHBL.

Strong GeV Emission Accompanying TeV Blazar H1426+428

Abstract:For High frequency BL Lac objects (HBLs) like H 1426+428, a significant fraction of their TeV gamma-rays emitted are likely to be absorbed in interactions with the diffuse IR background, yielding e(+/-) pairs. The resulting e(+/-) pairs generate one hitherto undiscovered GeV emission by inverse Compton scattering with the cosmic microwave background photons (CMBPs). We study such emission by taking the 1998-2000 CAT data, the reanalyzed 1999 & 2000 HEGRA data and the corresponding intrinsic spectra proposed by Aharonian et al. (2003a). We numerically calculate the scattered photon spectra for different intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strengths. If the IGMF is about 10(-18) G or weaker, there comes very strong GeV emission, whose flux is far above the detection sensitivity of the upcoming satellite GLAST! Considered its relatively high redshift (z=0.129), the detected GeV emission in turn provides us a valuable chance to calibrate the poorly known spectral energy distribution of the intergalactic infrared background, or provides us some reliable constraints on the poorly known IGMF strength.

Abstract:The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) causes attenuation of the VHE spectra of extragalactic sources, via pair-production. The amount of attenuation depends on the distance of the source, i.e. on the integration over the line of sight path taken by the VHE photons. The line of sight path calculation, depends on the values of the cosmological parameters and the evolution of these parameters. With the recent indications of a lower EBL level from observations and the greater sensitivity of the proposed future Cherenkov experiments it will be possible to detect higher redshift sources. We study whether the EBL attenuation of extragalactic sources is sensitive enough to put constrains on the cosmological parameters.

Abstract:Abstract The attenuation produced by extragalactic background light (EBL) in γ -ray spectra of blazars has been used to constrain the Hubble constant ( H 0 ) and matter density (Ω m ) of the universe. We propose to estimate H 0 and Ω m using the well-measured >10 GeV extragalactic γ -ray background (EGB). This suggestion is based on the fact that the >10 GeV EGB is totally explained by the emissions from blazars, and an EBL-absorption cutoff occurs at ∼50 GeV in the EGB spectrum. We fit the >10 GeV EGB data with modeled EGB spectrum. This results in and . Note that the uncertainties may be underestimated due to the limit of our realization for EBL model. H 0 and Ω m are degenerate in our method. Independent determination of Ω m by other methods would improve the constraint on H 0 .

Abstract:The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object 1ES 0229+200 is a relatively distant (z = 0.1396), hard-spectrum (Γ ∼ 2.5), very-high-energy-emitting (E > 100 GeV) γray blazar. Very-high-energy measurements of this active galactic nucleus have been used to place constraints on the intensity of the extragalactic background light and the intergalactic magnetic field. A multi-wavelength study of this object centered around very-high-energy observations by VERITAS is presented. This study obtained, over a period of three years, an 11.7 standard deviation detection and an average integral flux F (E > 300 GeV) = (23.3±2.8stat±5.8sys)×10 −9 photons m s, or 1.7% of the Crab Nebula’s flux (assuming the Crab Nebula spectrum measured by H.E.S.S). Supporting observations from Swift and RXTE are analyzed. The Swift observations are combined with previously published Fermi observations and the very-high-energy measurements to produce an overall spectral energy distribution which is then modeled assuming onezone synchrotron-self-Compton emission. The χ probability of the TeV flux being constant is 1.6%. This, when considered in combination with measured variability in the X-ray band, and the demonstrated variability of many TeV blazars, suggests that the use of blazars such as 1ES 0229+200 for intergalactic magnetic field studies may not be straightforward and challenges models that attribute hard TeV spectra to secondary γ-ray production along the line of sight. A low level of extragalactic background light as revealed by gamma-rays from blazars

Abstract:The diffuse extragalactic background light consists of the sum of the starlight emitted by galaxies through the history of the Universe, and it could also have an important contribution from the first stars, which may have formed before galaxy formation began. Direct measurements are difficult and not yet conclusive, owing to the large uncertainties caused by the bright foreground emission associated with zodiacal light. An alternative approach is to study the absorption features imprinted on the gamma-ray spectra of distant extragalactic objects by interactions of those photons with the background light photons. Here we report the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the blazars H 2356-309 and 1ES 1101-232, at redshifts z=0.165 and z=0.186, respectively. Their unexpectedly hard spectra provide an upper limit on the background light at optical/near-infrared wavelengths that appears to be very close to the lower limit given by the integrated light of resolved galaxies. The background flux at these wavelengths accordingly seems to be strongly dominated by the direct starlight from galaxies, thus excluding a large contribution from other sources -- in particular from the first stars formed. This result also indicates that intergalactic space is more transparent to gamma-rays than previously thought.

Abstract:The absorption of TeV $\gamma$-ray photons produced in relativistic jets by surrounding soft photon fields is a long-standing problem of jet physics. In some cases the most likely emission site close to the central black hole is ruled out because of the high opacity caused by strong optical and infrared photon sources, such as the broad line region. Mostly neglected for jet modeling is the absorption of $\gamma$-rays in the starlight photon field of the host galaxy. Analyzing the absorption for arbitrary locations and observation angles of the $\gamma$-ray emission site within the host galaxy we find that the distance to the galaxy center, the observation angle, and the distribution of starlight in the galaxy are crucial for the amount of absorption. We derive the absorption value for a sample of $20$ TeV detected blazars with a redshift $z_r<0.2$. The absorption value of the $\gamma$-ray emission located in the galaxy center may be as high as $20\%$ with an average value of $6\%$. This is important in order to determine the intrinsic blazar parameters. We see no significant trends in our sample between the degree of absorption and host properties, such as starlight emissivity, galactic size, half-light radius, and redshift. While the uncertainty of the spectral properties of the extragalactic background light exceeds the effect of absorption by stellar light from the host galaxy in distant objects, the latter is a dominant effect in nearby sources. It may also be revealed in a differential comparison of sources with similar redshifts.
