Abstract:We present the results of K-band imaging polarimetry of seven 3CR radio galaxies at redshifts (z) between 0.7 and 1.2. We find strong evidence for polarization in three sources: 3C 22, 3C 41 and 3C 114. Of these, 3C 41 shows strong evidence of having a quasar core whose infrared light is scattered by dust. We also find some evidence for polarization in 3C 54 and in 3C 356. The two pointlike sources (3C 22 and 3C 41) and the barely-elongated 3C 54 appear to have of order ten per cent of their K-band flux contributed by scattered light from the active nucleus. We conclude that scattered nuclear light can form a significant component of the near-infrared light emitted by high-redshift radio galaxies,and discuss models in which the scattering particles are electrons and dust-grains.

Radio galaxies at z~2.5: results from Keck spectropolarimetry

Abstract:In classifying the ensemble of powerful extragalactic radio sources, considerable evidence has accumulated that radio galaxies and quasars are orientation-dependent manifestations of the same parent population: massive spheroidal galaxies containing correspondingly massive black holes. [...] In this study, we exploit the opportunity to eliminate the quasar glare by performing sensitive spectropolarimetry with the Keck II telescope of a sample of radio galaxies with redshifts around 2.5. [...] We show that dust-reflected quasar light generally dominates the restframe ultraviolet continuum of these sources and that a highly clumped scattering medium results in almost grey scattering of the active galactic nucleus photons. The observations, however, do not exclude a substantial star formation rate averaged over a Gyr of evolution. The sub-mm reradiation from the scattering dust is likely to represent only a small fraction (~10%) of the total far infrared luminosity. An analysis of the emission lines excited in the interstellar medium of the host galaxy by the hard quasar radiation field reveals evidence of a dramatic chemical evolution within the spheroid during this epoch. Secondary nitrogen production in intermediate mass stars produces a characteristic signature in the NV/CIV and NV/HeII line ratios which has been seen previously in the broad line region of quasars at similar redshifts. We find intriguing correlations between the strengths of the Ly alpha and NV emission lines and the degree of ultraviolet continuum polarization which may represent the dispersal of dust associated with the chemical enrichment of the spheroid.

A study of broadband Faraday rotation and polarization behaviour over 1.3--10 GHz in 36 discrete radio sources

Abstract:We present a broadband polarization analysis of 36 discrete polarized radio sources over a very broad, densely-sampled frequency band. Our sample was selected on the basis of polarization behaviour apparent in narrowband archival data at 1.4 GHz: half the sample show complicated frequency-dependent polarization behaviour (i.e. Faraday complexity) at these frequencies, while half show comparatively simple behaviour (i.e. they appear Faraday simple). We re-observed the sample using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in full polarization, with 6 GHz of densely sampled frequency coverage spanning 1.3 to 10 GHz. We have devised a general polarization modelling technique that allows us to identify multiple polarized emission components in a source, and to characterize their properties. We detect Faraday complex behaviour in almost every source in our sample. Several sources exhibit particularly remarkable polarization behaviour. By comparing our new and archival data, we have identified temporal variability in the broadband integrated polarization spectra of some sources. In a number of cases, the characteristics of the polarized emission components, including the range of Faraday depths over which they emit, their temporal variability, spectral index, and the linear extent of the source, allow us to argue that the spectropolarimetric data encodes information about the magnetoionic environment of active galactic nuclei themselves. Furthermore, the data place direct constraints on the geometry and magnetoionic structure of this material. We discuss the consequences of restricted frequency bands on the detection and interpretation of polarization structures, and implications for upcoming spectropolarimetric surveys.

The extremely asymmetric radio structure of the z=3.1 radio galaxy B3 J2330+3927

Abstract:We report on 1.7 and 5.0 GHz observations of the z=3.087 radio galaxy B3 J2330+3927, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), and archival 1.4 and 8.4 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) data. Our VLBA data identify a compact, flat spectrum (\alpha_{1.7 GHz}^{5 GHz} = -0.2 +/- 0.1; S_\nu ~ \nu^\alpha) radio component as the core. The VLA images show that the fraction of core emission is very large (f_c \approx 0.5 at 8.4 GHz), and reveal a previously undetected, very faint counterjet, implying a radio lobe flux density ratio R >= 11 and a radio lobe distance ratio Q \approx 1.9. Those values are much more common in quasars than in radio galaxies, but the optical/near-IR spectra show a clear type II AGN for B3 J2330+3927, confirming that it is indeed a radio galaxy. Unlike all other radio galaxies, the bright Ly-\alpha emitting gas is located towards the furthest radio arm. We argue against environmental and relativistic beaming effects being the cause of the observed asymmetry, and suggest this source has intrinsically asymmetric radio jets. If this is the case, B3 J2330+3927 is the first example of such a source at high redshift, and seems to be difficult to reconcile with the unified model, which explains the differences between quasars and radio galaxies as being due to orientation effects.

Abstract:Abstract We present results from a combined radio polarization and emission line study of five type 2 quasars at z < 0.2 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) B-array at 5 GHz and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) [O iii] observations. These five sources are known to exhibit close association between radio structures and ionized gas morphology and kinematics. Four sources (J0945+1737, J1000+1242, J1356+1026 and J1430+1339) show polarization in the current data. J1010+1413 is the unpolarized source in our sample. We detect $0.5-1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ fractional polarization in the radio cores and a high fractional polarization ($10-30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) in the lobes of these sources. The morphological, spectral and polarization properties suggest a jet origin for radio emission in J0945+1737, J1000+1242, J1010+1413 and J1430+1339 whereas the current data cannot fully discern the origin of radio emission (jet or wind) in J1356+1026. An anti-correlation between various polarized knots in the radio and [O iii] emission is observed in our sources, similar to that observed in some radio-loud AGN in the literature. This suggests that the radio emission is likely to be depolarized by the emission-line gas. By modeling the depolarization effects, we estimate the size of the emission-line gas clouds to be ∼(2.8 ± 1.7) × 10−5 parsec and the amount of thermal material mixed with the synchrotron plasma to be ∼(9.2 ± 0.8) × 105 M⊙ in the lobe of J0945+1737 (which exhibits the most prominent polarization signature in its lobe). The current work demonstrates that the interplay of jets/winds and emission-line gas is most likely responsible for the nature of radio outflows in radio-quiet AGN.

A Kpc-scale Radio Polarization Study of PG BL Lacs with the uGMRT

Abstract:We present here uGMRT band 4 (~650MHz) polarization images of 8 BL~Lac objects belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) `blazar' sample. A large fraction of the sources (~63%) reveal core-halo radio structures with most of the polarization detected in the inner core-jet regions. PG1101+385 and PG2254+075 exhibit a `spine-sheath structure' in polarization. The core-halo and `spine-sheath' structures are consistent with the Unified Scheme suggestion that BL~Lacs are the pole-on beamed counterparts of Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type I radio galaxies. PG1418+546 and PG0851+203 (OJ287) show the presence of terminal hotspots similar to FR type II radio galaxies. They were also found to be low-spectrally peaked BL Lacs, supportive of the `blazar envelope' scenario for BL~Lacs and quasars. Fractional polarization ranges from 1-13% in the cores and 2-26% in the inner jets/lobes of the sample BL Lacs. Compared to the varied radio morphology of quasars from the PG `blazar' sample, the BL~Lacs appear to be less diverse. A comparison of the inferred core magnetic (B-) field structures on arcsec- (kpc-) scales w.r.t. the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) jet direction does not reveal any preferred orientation, suggesting that if large-scale ordered B-fields exist, they do so on scales smaller than probed by the current observations. However, the presence of polarized emission on arcsec-scales suggests that any mixing of thermal plasma with the synchrotron emitting plasma is insufficient to fully depolarize the emission via the internal depolarization process.

An X-rays-to-radio investigation of the nuclear polarization from the radio-galaxy Centaurus A

Abstract:Centaurus A is one of the closest radio-galaxies to Earth. Its proximity allowed us to extensively study its active galactic nucleus but the core emission mechanism remains elusive because of local strong dust and gas obscuration. The capability of polarimetry to shave-off contaminating emission has been exploited without success in the near-infrared by previous studies but the very recent measurement of the 2 - 8 keV polarization by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) brought the question back to the fore. To determine what is the prevalent photon generation mechanism to the multi-wavelength emission from the core of Centaurus A, we retrieved from the archives the panchromatic polarization measurements of the central compact component. We built the total and polarized flux spectral energy distributions of the core and demonstrated that synchrotron self-Compton models nicely fit the polarized flux from the radio to the X-ray band. The linear polarization of the synchrotron continuum is perpendicular to the jet radio axis from the optical to the radio band, and parallel to it at higher energies. The observed smooth rotation of the polarization angle in the ultraviolet band is attributed to synchrotron emission from regions that are getting closer to the particle acceleration site, where the orientation of the jet's magnetic fields become perpendicular to the jet axis. This phenomenon support the shock acceleration mechanism for particle acceleration in Centaurus A, in line with IXPE observations of several high-synchrotron peak blazars.

Broadband, radio spectro-polarimetric study of 100 radiative-mode and jet-mode AGN

Abstract:We present the results from a broadband (1 to 3 GHz), spectro-polarimetry study of the integrated emission from 100 extragalactic radio sources with the ATCA, selected to be highly linearly polarized at 1.4 GHz. We use a general purpose, polarization model-fitting procedure that describes the Faraday rotation measure (RM) and intrinsic polarization structure of up to three distinct polarized emission regions or 'RM components' of a source. Overall, 37%/52%/11% of sources are best fit by one/two/three RM components. However, these fractions are dependent on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in polarization (more RM components more likely at higher S/N). In general, our analysis shows that sources with high integrated degrees of polarization at 1.4 GHz have low Faraday depolarization, are typically dominated by a single RM component, have a steep spectral index, and a high intrinsic degree of polarization. After classifying our sample into radiative-mode and jet-mode AGN, we find no significant difference between the Faraday rotation or Faraday depolarization properties of jet-mode and radiative-mode AGN. However, there is a statistically significant difference in the intrinsic degree of polarization between the two types, with the jet-mode sources having more intrinsically ordered magnetic field structures than the radiative-mode sources. We also find a preferred perpendicular orientation of the intrinsic magnetic field structure of jet-mode AGN with respect to the jet direction, while no clear preference is found for the radiative-mode sources.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the linear polarization of six active galactic nuclei - 0415+379 (3C~111), 0507+179, 0528+134 (OG+134), 0954+658, 1418+546 (OQ+530), and 1637+574 (OS+562). Our targets were monitored from 2007 to 2011 in the observatory-frame frequency range 80-253 GHz, corresponding to a rest-frame frequency range 88-705 GHz. We find average degrees of polarization m_L ~ 2-7%; this indicates that the polarization signals are effectively averaged out by the emitter geometries. We see indication for fairly strong shocks and/or complex, variable emission region geometries in our sources, with compression factors <0.9 and/or changes in viewing angles by >10 deg. An analysis of correlations between source fluxes and polarization parameter points out special cases: the presence of (at least) two distinct emission regions with different levels of polarization (for 0415+379) as well as emission from a single, predominant component (for 0507+179 and 1418+546). Regarding the evolution of flux and polarization, we find good agreement between observations and the signal predicted by "oblique shock in jet" scenarios in one source (1418+546). We attempt to derive rotation measures for all sources, leading to actual measurements for two AGN and upper limits for three sources. We derive values of RM = -39,000 +/- 1,000 (stat) +/- 13,000 (sys) rad/m^2 and RM = 420,000 +/- 10,000 (stat) +/- 110,000 (sys) rad/m^2 for 1418+546 and 1637+574, respectively; these are the highest values reported to date for AGN. These values indicate magnetic field strengths of the order ~0.0001 G. For 0415+379, 0507+179, and 0954+658 we derive upper limits |RM| < 17,000 rad/m^2. From the relation |RM| ~ nu^a we find a = 1.9 +/- 0.3 for 1418+546, in good agreement with a = 2 as expected for a spherical or conical outflow.

Abstract:We present the results of deep spectropolarimetry of two powerful radio galaxies at $z\sim2.5$ (4C 00.54 and 4C 23.56) obtained with the W.M. Keck II 10m telescope, aimed at studying the relative contribution of the stellar and non-stellar components to the ultraviolet continuum. Both galaxies show strong linear polarization of the continuum between rest-frame $\sim$1300-2000~Å, and the orientation of the electric vector is perpendicular to the main axis of the UV continuum. In this sense, our objects are like most 3C radio galaxies at $z\sim1$. The total flux spectra of 4C 00.54 and 4C 23.56 do not show the strong P-Cygni absorption features or the photospheric absorption lines expected when the UV continuum is dominated by young and massive stars. The only features detected can be ascribed to interstellar absorptions by SiII, CII and OI. Our results are similar to those for 3C radio galaxies at lower $z$, suggesting that the UV continuum of powerful radio galaxies at $z\sim2.5$ is still dominated by non-stellar radiation, and that young massive stars do not contribute more than $\approx$50% to the total continuum flux at 1500~Å.

Radio Polarization: A Powerful Resource for Understanding the Blazar Divide

Abstract:With high-sensitivity kiloparsec-scale radio polarimetry, we can examine the jet-medium interactions and get a better understanding of the blazar divide in radio-loud (RL) AGN. We are analyzing the radio polarimetric observations with the EVLA and GMRT of 24 quasars and BL Lacs belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) sample. The RL quasars show extensive polarisation structures in their cores, jets, lobes, and hotspots, whereas preliminary results suggest that BL Lacs exhibit polarisation primarily in their cores and inner jet regions. These findings imply that both intrinsic (central engine-related) and extrinsic (environment-related) variables are important in the formation of the blazar subclasses. The Fanaroff-Riley (FR) dichotomy can also be studied assuming RL unification and looking through the lens of blazars. Due to the radio-unbiased nature of the optically/UV-selected PG sample, we find a large fraction of the PG quasars are restarted, distorted (S- or X-shaped), or have a hybrid FR morphology.

Investigating Differences in the Palomar-Green Blazar Population Using Polarization

Abstract:We present polarization images with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in A and B-array configurations at 6 GHz of 7 radio-loud (RL) quasars and 8 BL Lac objects belonging to the Palomar-Green (PG) `blazar' sample. This completes our arcsecond-scale polarization study of an optically-selected volume-limited blazar sample comprising 16 radio-loud quasars and 8 BL Lac objects. Using the VLA, we identify kpc-scale polarization in the cores and jets/lobes of all the blazars, with fractional polarization varying from around $0.8 \pm 0.3$% to $37 \pm 6$%. The kpc-scale jets in PG RL quasars are typically aligned along their parsec-scale jets and show apparent magnetic fields parallel to jet directions in their jets/cores and magnetic field compression in their hotspots. The quasars show evidence of interaction with their environment as well as restarted AGN activity through morphology, polarization and spectral indices. These quasi-periodic jet modulations and restarted activity may be indicative of an unstable accretion disk undergoing transition. We find that the polarization characteristics of the BL Lacs are consistent with their jets being reoriented multiple times, with no correlation between their core apparent magnetic field orientations and pc-scale jet directions. We find that the low synchrotron peaked BL Lacs show polarization and radio morphology features typical of `strong' jet sources as defined by Meyer et al. (2011) for the `blazar envelope scenario', which posits a division based on jet profiles and velocity gradients rather than total jet power.

This is consistent with the polarization structures where the hotspots appear to be locations of jet bends or bow-shocks. We present global properties for the entire PG 'blazar' sample. We find that jet powers correlate with accretion rates for the quasars; higher accretion rates result in more powerful radio jets. A correlation between the radio core fractional polarization and the 150 MHz total radio luminosity for the nine quasars studied here may imply that more organized B-fields at the jet bases lead to higher core fractional polarization and to more powerful radio jets.

Detection and Measurement of Parsec-Scale Circular Polarization in Four AGN

Abstract:We present five epochs of 15 GHz VLBA observations of 13 AGN. These observations were specially calibrated to detect parsec scale circular polarization and our calibration techniques are discussed and analyzed in detail. We obtained reliable detections of parsec scale circular polarization in the radio jets of 4 AGN: 3C84, PKS 0528+134, 3C273, and 3C279. For each of these objects our detections are at the level of ~ 0.3-1% local fractional circular polarization. Our observations are consistent across multiple epochs (and different calibration techniques) in the sign and magnitude of the circular polarization observed. 3C273 and 3C279 both undergo core outbursts during our observations and changes in the circular polarization of both sources are correlated with these outbursts. In general, we observe the circular polarization to be nearly coincident with the strong VLBI cores of these objects; however, in 3C84 the circular polarization is located a full milli-arcsecond south of the source peak, and in the 1996.73 epoch of 3C273 the circular polarization is predominately associated with the newly emerging jet component. Circular polarization may be produced as an intrinsic component of synchrotron radiation or by the Faraday conversion of linear to circular polarization. Our single frequency observations do not easily distinguish between these possible mechanisms, but independent of mechanism, the remarkable consistency across epoch of the sign of the observed circular polarization suggests the existence of a long term, stable, uni-directional magnetic field. Single dish observations of 3C273 and 3C279 at 8 GHz by Hodge and Aller suggest that this stability may persist for decades in our frame of observation.
The diffuse radio emission in the high-redshift cluster PSZ2 G091.83+26.11: total intensity and polarisation analysis with Very Large Array 1-4 GHz observations

Abstract:We present the peculiar case of PSZ2G091.83+26.11 at z=0.822. This cluster hosts a Mpc-scale radio halo and an elongated radio source, whose location with the respect to the intracluster medium (ICM) distribution and to the cluster centre is not consistent with a simple merger scenario. We use VLA data at 1-4 GHz to investigate the spectral and polarisation properties of the diffuse radio emission. We combine them with previously published data from LOFAR n the 120-168 MHz band, and from the uGMRT at 250-500 and 550-900 MHz. We also complement the radio data with Chandra X-ray observations to compare the thermal and non-thermal emission of the cluster. The elongated radio emission is visible up to 3.0 GHz and has an integrated spectral index of $-1.24\pm0.03$, with a steepening from $-0.89\pm0.03$ to $-1.39\pm0.03$. These values correspond to Mach numbers $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,int}=3.0\pm0.19$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,inj}=2.48\pm0.15$. Chandra data reveals a surface brightness discontinuity at the location of the radio source, with a compression factor of $\mathcal{C}=2.22^{+0.39}_{-0.30}$ (i.e. $\mathcal{M}_{\rm Xray}=1.93^{+0.42}_{-0.32}$). We also find that the source is polarised at GHz frequencies. We estimate an intrinsic polarisation fraction of $\sim0.2$, a Rotation Measure of $\sim50~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$ (including the Galactic contribution) and an external depolarisation of $\sim60~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$. The $B$-vectors are aligned with the major axis of the source, suggesting magnetic field compression. Hence, we classify this source as a radio relic. We also find a linear/super-linear correlation between the non-thermal and thermal emission. We propose an off-axis merger and/or multiple merger events to explain the position and orientation of the relic. Given the properties of the radio relic, we speculate that PSZ2G091.83+26.11 is in a fairly young merger state.

Abstract:We report results from a deep polarization imaging of the nearby radio galaxy 3C$\,$84 (NGC$\,$1275). The source was observed with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) at 86$\,$GHz at an ultra-high angular resolution of $50\mu$as (corresponding to 250$R_{s}$). We also add complementary multi-wavelength data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA; 15 & 43$\,$GHz) and from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA; 97.5, 233.0, and 343.5$\,$GHz). At 86$\,$GHz, we measure a fractional linear polarization of $\sim2$% in the VLBI core region. The polarization morphology suggests that the emission is associated with an underlying limb-brightened jet. The fractional linear polarization is lower at 43 and 15$\,$GHz ($\sim0.3-0.7$% and $<0.1$%, respectively). This suggests an increasing linear polarization degree towards shorter wavelengths on VLBI scales. We also obtain a large rotation measure (RM) of $\sim10^{5-6}~{\rm rad/m^{2}}$ in the core at $\gtrsim$43$\,$GHz. Moreover, the VLBA 43$\,$GHz observations show a variable RM in the VLBI core region during a small flare in 2015. Faraday depolarization and Faraday conversion in an inhomogeneous and mildly relativistic plasma could explain the observed linear polarization characteristics and the previously measured frequency dependence of the circular polarization. Our Faraday depolarization modeling suggests that the RM most likely originates from an external screen with a highly uniform RM distribution. To explain the large RM value, the uniform RM distribution, and the RM variability, we suggest that the Faraday rotation is caused by a boundary layer in a transversely stratified jet. Based on the RM and the synchrotron spectrum of the core, we provide an estimate for the magnetic field strength and the electron density of the jet plasma.

Abstract:Deep polarization surveys at low radio frequencies are key to cosmic magnetism studies: Larger catalogs of polarized extragalactic sources and increased precision on Faraday rotation measures (RMs) make it possible to probe the magneto-ionic medium along the lines of sight of the sources and to construct denser RM grids. In a first paper, we presented a search for polarized sources in deep observations of the 25 square degree area of the European Large Area ISO Survey North 1 (ELAIS-N1) field with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) in the range 114.9 to 177.4 MHz. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the polarized radio galaxies and use the catalog to produce an RM grid of the field. After identifying the host galaxies and collecting redshift information, we characterized the radio galaxies in terms of their radio morphologies, rest frame radio luminosities, and linear sizes. We calculated residual rotation measures (RRMs) by removing the Galactic RM and studied the variation in the RRMs with redshift and degree of polarization. We produced an RRM grid of the field and compared the positions of the polarized sources with those of galaxy clusters and superclusters. The radio galaxies show a variety of morphologies, including diffuse emission; Fanaroff Riley type II sources make up about half of the sample. Using available multiband catalogs, we found redshifts for the hosts of all polarized sources in the range of 0.06 to 1.9. Polarized emission is detected mainly from large radio galaxies. The RRM values have a median close to zero, and they appear to be independent of redshift and degree of polarization. The sources in the lines of sight of clusters of galaxies and of a supercluster are indistinguishable in their polarization and RRM properties from the population of sources that are not behind these structures.

Abstract:We report a search for linear polarization in the active galactic nucleus (AGN) 3C 84 (NGC 1275) at observed frequencies of 239 and 348 GHz, corresponding to rest‐frame frequencies of 243 and 354 GHz. We collected polarization data with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer via Earth rotation polarimetry. We do not detect linear polarization. Our analysis finds 3σ upper limits on the degree of polarization of 0.5 and 1.9 per cent at 239 and 348 GHz, respectively. We regard the influence of Faraday conversion as marginal, leading to expected circular polarizations ≲0.3 per cent. Assuming depolarization by a local Faraday screen, we constrain the rotation measure, as well as the fluctuations therein, to be ≳ 106 rad m−2. From this we estimate line‐of‐sight magnetic field strengths of ≳100 μG. Given the physical dimensions of 3C 84 and its observed structure, the Faraday screen appears to show prominent small‐scale structure, with ΔRM ≳ 106 rad m−2 on projected spatial scales ≲1 pc.

Optical Spectropolarimetry of Quasi-Stellar Objects Discovered by the Two-Micron All Sky Survey

Abstract:Highly polarized QSOs discovered in the Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) have been observed to determine the source(s) of optical polarization in this near-infrared color-selected sample. Broad emission lines are observed in the polarized flux spectra of most objects, and the polarization of the lines is at about the same level and position angle as the continuum. Generally, the continuum is bluer and the broad-line Balmer decrement is smaller in polarized light than for the spectrum of total flux. Narrow emission lines are much less polarized than the broad lines and continuum for all polarized objects. These properties favor scattering by material close to a partially obscured and reddened active nucleus, but exterior to the regions producing the broad-line emission, as the source of polarized flux in 2MASS QSOs. The largely unpolarized narrow-line features require that the electrons or dust polarizing the light be located at distances from the nucleus not much greater than the extent of the narrow emission-line region. In addition to known high-polarization objects, four 2MASS QSOs with AGN spectral types of 1.9 and 2 were observed to search for hidden broad emission-line regions. Broad lines were detected in polarized light for two of these objects, and the polarizing mechanism appears to be the same for these objects as for the highly polarized QSOs in the sample that readily show broad emission lines in their spectra. The observations also show that starlight from the host galaxy contributes a significant amount of optical flux, especially for the narrow-line objects, and support the suggestion that many 2MASS QSOs are measured to have low polarization simply because of dilution of the polarized AGN light by the host galaxy.
