Abstract:We present stellar kinematics for a sample of 10 early-type g alaxies observed using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope , and the Modular Spectrograph on the MDM Observatory 2.4-m telescope. These observations are a part of an o ngoing program to understand the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. Our spect ral ranges include either the calcium triplet absorption lines at 8498, 8542, and 8662 Å, or the Mg b absorption at 5175 Å. The lines are used to derive line-of-si ght velocity distributions (LOSVDs) of the stars using a Maximum Pena lized Likelihood method. We use Gauss-Hermite polynomials to parameterize the LOSVDs and find predominant ly negativeh4 values (boxy distributions) in the central regions of our galaxies. One galaxy, NGC 4697, has si gnificantly positive central h4 (high tail weight). The majority of galaxies have a central velocity dispersion exc ess in the STIS kinematics over ground-based velocity dispersions. The galaxies with the strongest rotational su pport, as quantified withvMAX/σST IS, have the smallest dispersion excess at STIS resolution. The best-fitting, general, axisymmetric dynamical models ( described in a companion paper) require black holes in all cases, with masses ranging from 10 6.5 to 109.3 M⊙. We replot these updated masses on the Mbh − σ relation, and show that the fit to only these 10 galaxies has a slope consi ste t with the fits to larger samples. The greatest outlier is NGC 2778, a dwarf elliptical with relatively poor ly constrained black hole mass. The two best candidates for pseudobulges, NGC 3384 and 7457, do not deviate significa tly from the established relation between Mbh and σ. Neither do the three galaxies which show the most evidence o f a recent merger, NGC 3608, 4473, and 4697. Abstract:We investigate the stellar kinematics of a sample of galaxies extracted from the hydrodynamic cosmological Magneticum Pathfinder simulations out to $5$ half-mass radii. We construct differential radial stellar spin profiles quantified by the observationally widely used $\lambda_\mathrm{R}$ and the closely related $(V/\sigma)$ parameters. We find three characteristic profile shapes: profiles exhibiting a (i) peak within $2.5$ half-mass radii and a subsequent decrease (ii) continuous increase that plateaus at larger radii typically with a high amplitude (iii) completely flat behaviour typically with low amplitude, in agreement with observations. This shows that the kinematic state of the stellar component can vary significantly with radius, suggesting a distinct interplay between in-situ star formation and ex-situ accretion of stars. Following the evolution of our sample through time, we provide evidence that the accretion history of galaxies with decreasing profiles is dominated by the anisotropic accretion of low mass satellites that get disrupted beyond $ \sim 2.0$ half-mass radii, building up a stellar halo with non-ordered motion while maintaining the central rotation already present at $z=2$. In fact, at $z=2$ decreasing profiles are the predominant profile class. Hence, we can predict a distinct formation pathway for galaxies with a decreasing profile and show that the centre resembles an old embedded disk. Furthermore, we show that the radius of the kinematic transition provides a good estimation for the transition radius from in-situ stars in the centre to accreted stars in the halo.

Abstract:Observations of galaxy isophotes, long-slit kinematics, and high-resolution photometry suggested a possible dichotomy between two distinct classes of elliptical galaxies. But these methods are expensive for large galaxy samples. Instead, integral field spectroscopy can efficiently recognize the shape, dynamics, and stellar population of complete samples of early-type galaxies (ETGs). These studies showed that the two main classes, the fast and slow rotators, can be separated using stellar kinematics. I show that there is a dichotomy in the dynamics of the two classes. The slow rotators are weakly triaxial and dominate above [Formula: see text]. Below M crit , the structure of fast rotators parallels that of spiral galaxies. There is a smooth sequence along which the age, the metal content, the enhancement in α-elements, and the weight of the stellar initial mass function all increase with the central mass density slope, or bulge mass fraction, while the molecular gas fraction correspondingly decreases. The properties of ETGs on galaxy scaling relations, in particular the [Formula: see text] diagram, and their dependence on environment, indicate two main independent channels for galaxy evolution. Fast-rotator ETGs start as star-forming disks and evolve through a channel dominated by gas accretion, bulge growth, and quenching, whereas slow rotators assemble near the centers of massive halos via intense star formation at high redshift and remain as such for the rest of their evolution via a channel dominated by gas poor mergers. This is consistent with independent studies of the galaxies redshift evolution.

Young Kinematically Decoupled Components in Early-Type Galaxies

Abstract:We present results from a series of follow-up observations of a sub-sample of the representative SAURON survey elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) galaxies using the OASIS integral-field spectrograph. These observations focus on the central 10" x 10", with roughly double the spatial resolution of the SAURON observations. This increased spatial resolution reveals a number of interesting and previously unresolved features in the measured stellar kinematics and absorption-line strengths. We find that galaxies exhibiting the youngest global stellar populations (as measured with SAURON) often contain a distinctly young central region (on scales of a few hundred parsec or less) compared to the rest of the galaxy. Moreover, these compact, young components are found to be mostly counter-rotating with respect to the rest of the galaxy. Given that there is no well-established reason for such young components to `prefer' counter- over co-rotation, this finding raises the following questions: How common are these small KDCs as a function of age? Why are there more young than old compact KDCs? Where are the equivalent co-rotating components? We explore these questions using simple simulated velocity fields and stellar population models, and find that the fading of the young component as it evolves, coupled with the fact that counter-rotating components are more easily detected in the velocity field, may help explain the observed trends.

Obtaining Galaxy Masses Using Stellar Absorption and [O II] Emission-Line Diagnostics in Late-Type Galaxies

Abstract:The [O II] lambda3727 emission lines and absorption features from stellar Balmer and Ca H&K lines are the most accessible kinematic diagnotics in galaxies at z~1. We investigate the kinematics of 22 local late-type galaxies using these spectral features and we compare the results to 21-cm neutral hydrogen spectra in order to assess the utility of each diagnostic for measuring galaxy masses. In order to simulate data at high redshift where only 1-dimensional velocity profiles are normally available, we study spatially integrated as well as spatially-resolved spectra. Although the studied galaxies span a wide range of morphological types, inclinations, and star formation rates, we find that the gaseous and stellar kinematic tracers yield comparable kinematic line widths and systemic velocities. The [O II] and H I line widths correlate most strongly, showing an intrinsic dispersion of ~20 km/s, or ~10% for a typical galaxy with a kinematic width of 200 km/s. In a few extreme cases, the [O II] line widths underestimate the neutral hydrogen width by 50%. Reliable velocity widths can also be obtained from the stellar Balmer and Ca H&K absorption lines, even for some of the very late-type galaxies which have strong emission lines. The intrinsic dispersion is <10% between the stellar absorption and H I line widths. We provide a prescription for using these strong stellar absorption and [O II] emission features to measure the kinematics, and thus masses, of galaxies in the distant universe.

Abstract:We describe a new technique to measure stellar kinematics and line-strengths at large radii in nearby galaxies. Using the integral-field spectrograph SAURON as a 'photon-collector', we obtain spectra out to four effective radii (Re) in the early-type galaxy NGC 3379. By fitting orbit-based models to the extracted stellar velocity profile, we find that ~40% of the total mass within 5 Re is dark. The measured absorption line-strengths reveal a radial gradient with constant slope out to 4 Re.

Abstract:This paper is an introduction to the state sum model for the Alexander-Conway polynomial that was introduced in the the author's book "Formal Knot Theory" (Princeton University Press, 1983). The article outlines how Alexander's original definition of the polynomial as the determinant of a matrix associated with the link diagram can be reformulated as a state summation over combinatorial configurations of the diagram. Facts about the state model, the Clock Theorem (that makes this model tick) and relations with other state models such as the bracket polynomial, are discussed. The paper includes a miniature introduction to Khovanov homology. This paper will appear in the forthcoming Dover republication of Formal Knot Theory.

Abstract:We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) systems and diffuse stellar light of four intermediate luminosity (sub-L*) early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster based on Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs (GMOS) data. Our galaxy sample is fainter (-23.8 < M-K < -22.7) than most previous studies, nearly doubling the number of galaxies in this magnitude range that now have GC kinematics. The data for the diffuse light extends to 4R(e), and the data for the GCs reaches 8-12R(e). We find that the kinematics in these outer regions are all different despite the fact that these four galaxies have similar photometric properties, and are uniformly classified as "fast rotators" from their stellar kinematics within 1R(e). The GC systems exhibit a wide range of kinematic morphology. The rotation axis and amplitude can change between the inner and outer regions, including a case of counterrotation. This difference shows the importance of wide-field kinematic studies, and shows that stellar and GC kinematics can change significantly as one moves beyond the inner regions of galaxies. Moreover, the kinematics of the GC systems can differ from that of the stars, suggesting that the formation of the two populations are also distinct.

Abstract:We present H I gas kinematics and star formation activities of NGC 6822, a dwarf galaxy located in the Local Group at a distance of similar to 490 kpc. We perform profile decomposition of line-of-sight velocity profiles of the H I data cube (42.4'' x 12.0'' spatial, corresponding to similar to 100 pc; 1.6 km s(-1) spectral) taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. For this, we use a new tool, the so-called BAYGAUD, which is based on Bayesian analysis techniques, allowing us to decompose a line-of-sight velocity profile into an optimal number of Gaussian components in a quantitative manner. We classify the decomposed H I gas components of NGC 6822 into cool-bulk, warm-bulk, cool-non-bulk, and warm-non-bulk motions with respect to their centroid velocities and velocity dispersions. We correlate their gas surface densities with corresponding star formation rate densities derived using both the GALEX far-ultraviolet and WISE 22 mu m data to examine the resolved Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) law for NGC 6822. Of the decomposed H I gas components, the cool-bulk component is likely to better follow the linear extension of the K-S law for molecular hydrogen (H-2) at low gas surface densities where H I is not saturated.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Blue compact galaxies, also known as H ii galaxies, are dwarf, star-forming objects with relatively simple dynamics, which allows for the investigation of star formation mechanisms in a cleaner manner compared to late-type objects. In this study, we have examined various characteristics of the interstellar medium, in connection with the kinematics and dynamics of ionized gas, in Tol 1004-296 and Tol 0957-278. These two objects were observed using the SOAR Integral Field Spectrometer (SIFS) attached to the Southern Observatory for Astrophysical Research (SOAR). Both galaxies were observed with two gratings: one with medium resolution for monochromatic and abundance maps, and another with high resolution for kinematics and profile analysis. Additionally, we conducted an analysis on the velocity and velocity dispersion maps using intensity–velocity dispersion (I-σ) and velocity–velocity dispersion (Vr-σ) diagrams. Neither object exhibits a rotation pattern, and only Tol 1004-296 shows a velocity gradient between the two principal knots. However, the study reveals the significant role played by velocity dispersion in the star formation process. Specifically, we identified a relationship between monochromatic intensity, metallicity, and velocity dispersion, where high emission corresponds to low metallicity and low velocity dispersion. Tol 1004-296, in particular, exhibits a distinctive linear high velocity dispersion pattern between the two main knots, suggesting that both star formation sites are pushing the gas in opposite directions.

Abstract:In this study, we present Integral Field Unit observations of the galaxy SDSSJ0859 + 3923, utilizing the MEGARA (Multi Espectrógrafo en GTC de Alta Resolución para Astronomía) instrument on the GTC (Gran Telescopio Canarias) 10.4m telescope. These observations were conducted in two distinct spectral ranges: 4332–5222 Å and 6097–7345 Å, with a high resolving power ( R | | | |⁠ ), and spatial resolution of 25 pc, considering the galaxy's distance of 8.5 Mpc. Our observations have identified five H ii regions, whose precise positions were determined using data from the Wide Field Camera 3 (ultraviolet and visible) of the Hubble Space Telescope , WFC3-UVIS/ HST , archive images, where we also detected the associated blue underlying continuum linked to the ionized knots. A detailed kinematic analysis of these regions revealed low-velocity dispersion values (around 10 km s | |⁠ ) in four H ii regions, indicating a lack of significant turbulent events. In the fifth region, we observed a peak in velocity dispersion reaching 40 km s | |⁠ , which we interpret as the result of hot star winds and/or a recent type-II supernova explosion. We have conducted a comprehensive spectral analysis of the H ii regions, obtaining emission-line fluxes that enabled us to confirm the oxygen abundance (12 + log(O/H) = 7.41 | | 0.15) and, using popstar models, to constrain the age and mass of the ionizing young clusters.

Abstract:Aims. We study the kinematically distinct components in two early-type galaxies NGC 448 and NGC 4365 aided by integral-field observations with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope. We aim to measure the brightness profiles, kinematics, and stellar population properties of the peculiar kinematic structures in these galaxies and shed light on their true nature and formation mechanism. Methods. We use a kinematic decomposition technique to separate the individual contributions to the spectra of the two distinct kinematic components observed at each spatial position in the field of view. By folding back the outcome of a photometric decomposition we reduce the intrinsic degeneracies in recovering the kinematics and the best-fitting stellar spectral templates. Finally, by extracting the Lick line-strength indices for the individual components and fitting them to single stellar population models we derive their ages, metallicities, and {\alpha}/Fe overabundances. Results. The two kinematically decoupled stellar components in NGC 448 have similar ages, but different chemical compositions. The distinct kinematic feature in NGC 448 has a nearly exponential surface-brightness light profile, dominates in the innermost ~ 10", is smaller in size, and is very likely an embedded counter-rotating disk as also indicated by its kinematics. It has higher metallicity than the main galaxy stellar body and lower {\alpha}/Fe overabundance. By contrast, we do not find evidence for true decoupling in the two distinct kinematic components in NGC 4365. This confirms earlier work suggesting that the kinematically distinct core is likely not a separate dynamical structure, but most certainly likely a projection effect stemming from the orbital structure of this galaxy that was previously found to be intrinsically triaxial in shape.

Abstract:I present an overview of new observations of atomic and molecular gas in early-type galaxies, focusing on the Atlas3D project. Our data on stellar kinematics, age and metallicity, and ionized gas kinematics allow us to place the cold gas into the broader context of early-type galaxy assembly and star formation history. The cold gas data also provide valuable constraints for numerical simulations of early-type galaxies.

Abstract:We present the first statistical study of spatially integrated non-Gaussian stellar kinematics spanning 7 Gyr in cosmic time. We use deep, rest-frame optical spectroscopy of massive galaxies (stellar mass $M_\star > 10^{10.5} {\rm M}_\odot$) at redshifts z = 0.05, 0.3 and 0.8 from the SAMI, MAGPI and LEGA-C surveys, to measure the excess kurtosis $h_4$ of the stellar velocity distribution, the latter parametrised as a Gauss-Hermite series. We find that at all redshifts where we have large enough samples, $h_4$ anti-correlates with the ratio between rotation and dispersion, highlighting the physical connection between these two kinematic observables. In addition, and independently from the anti-correlation with rotation-to-dispersion ratio, we also find a correlation between $h_4$ and $M_\star$, potentially connected to the assembly history of galaxies. In contrast, after controlling for mass, we find no evidence of independent correlation between $h_4$ and aperture velocity dispersion or galaxy size. These results hold for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. For quiescent galaxies, $h_4$ also correlates with projected shape, even after controlling for the rotation-to-dispersion ratio. At any given redshift, star-forming galaxies have lower $h_4$ compared to quiescent galaxies, highlighting the link between kinematic structure and star-forming activity.

Abstract:To investigate the relationship between black holes and their host galaxies, many groups have used the width of the [O III] 5007 line as a substitute for the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma*) of galaxy bulges. We directly test this assumption with a large and homogeneous sample of narrow-line active galactic nuclei from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We consider multiple transitions ([O II] 3727, [O III] 5007, and [S II] 6716, 6731) and various techniques for quantifying the line width in order to obtain a calibration between the gas velocity dispersion, sigma_g, and sigma*. We find that sigma_g of the low-ionization lines traces sigma*, as does sigma_g for the core of [O III] after its asymmetric blue wing is properly removed, although in all cases the correlation between sigma_g and sigma* has considerable scatter. While the gas kinematics of the narrow-line region of active galaxies are primarily governed by the gravitational potential of the stars, the accretion rate, as traced by the Eddington luminosity ratio, seems to play an important secondary role. Departures from virial motions correlate systematically with accretion rate. We discuss the implications of these results for previous studies that use [O III] line widths to infer stellar velocity dispersions in quasars and narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies.

Abstract:We present a two-pronged approach to the formation of early-type galaxies, using a sample of 18 galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1 from the HST/ACS Ultra Deep Field and GRAPES surveys: 1) We combine slitless low resolution spectroscopy from the GRAPES dataset with simple models of galaxy formation to explore their star formation histories. 2) We also perform an analysis of their surface brightness distribution with the unprecedented details provided by the ACS superb angular resolution and photometric depth. Our spectroscopic analysis reveals that their stellar populations are rather homogeneous in age and metallicity and formed at redshifts z ~ 2-5. Evolving them passively, they become practically indistinguishable from ellipticals at z = 0. Also, their isophotal shapes appear very similar to those observed for nearby ellipticals, in that the percentages of disky and boxy galaxies at z ~ 1 are close to the values measured at z = 0. Moreover,we find that the isophotal structure of z ~ 1 early-type galaxies obeys the correlations already observed among nearby ellipticals, i.e. disky ellipticals have generally higher characteristic ellipticities, and boxy ellipticals have larger half-light radii and are brighter in the restframe B band. In this respect then, no significant structural differences are seen for ellipticals between z = 0 and 1.

Abstract:We study two dimensional Fabry-Perot interferometric observations of the nearby face-on late-type spiral galaxy, NGC 628, in order to analyse the ionized gas component of the interstellar medium. Covering the galaxy out to a radius larger than 12 kpc, and with a spatial sampling of 1.6 arcsec, we investigate the large-scale dynamics as well as feedback from individual HII regions into their surrounding medium. We study the role of gravitational perturbations along with that of external triggers which can disturb the kinematics and morphology of NGC 628. We verify the presence of an inner rapidly rotating disc-like component in NGC 628, which we interpret as caused by slow secular evolution of the large-scale spiral arms and oval structure. In combination with auxiliary data, we find indication for that gas is falling in from the outer parts towards the central regions, where a nuclear ring has formed at the location of the inner Lindblad resonance radius of an m=2 perturbation which could help build a pseudo-bulge in NGC 628. Moreover, we calculate radial profiles of the emission-line velocity dispersion which we use to study the role of feedback from individual HII regions. The mean velocity dispersion for the ionized gas (even when excluding pixels belonging to individual HII regions) is almost constant out to 12 kpc, although it varies from 14 to 20 km/s, with a steady decline in the outer parts. The current paper demonstrates a number of tools that we have developed for building a solid frame work for studying the evolution of structure in spiral galaxies using two dimensional kinematic observations.

Abstract:We present kinematic measurements of the thick and thin disks in two edge-on galaxies. We have derived stellar rotation curves at and above the galaxies' midplanes using Ca II triplet features measured with the GMOS spectrograph on Gemini North. In one galaxy, FGC 1415, the kinematics above the plane shows clear rotation that lags that of the midplane by ~20%-50%, similar to the behavior seen in the Milky Way. However, the kinematics of the second galaxy, FGC 227, is quite different. The rotation above the plane is extremely slow, showing ≲25% of the rotation speed of the stars at the midplane. We decompose the observed rotation curves into a superposition of thick- and thin-disk kinematics, using two-dimensional fits to the galaxy images to determine the fraction of thick-disk stars at each position. We find that the thick disk of FGC 1415 rotates at 30%-40% of the rotation speed of the thin disk. In contrast, the thick disk of FGC 227 is very likely counterrotating if it is rotating at all. These observations are consistent with the velocity dispersion profiles that we measure for each galaxy. The detection of counterrotating thick disks conclusively rules out models in which the thick disk forms either during monolithic collapse or from vertical heating of an earlier thin disk. Instead, the data strongly support models in which the thick disk forms from direct accretion of stars from infalling satellites.
