Abstract:The COMPTEL and EGRET detectors aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory measured an extragalactic gamma-ray background extending from MeV energies up to about 100 GeV. Calculations performed making reasonable assumptions indicate that blazars can account for the background between about 10 MeV and at least 10 GeV. Below 30 MeV, the background flux and spectrum are not very well determined and a dedicated satellite detector will be required to remedy this situation. Below 10 MeV, supernovae and possibly AGN may contribute to the extragalactic background flux. Above 10 GeV, the role of blazars in contributing to the background is unclear because we do not have data on their spectra at these energies and because theoretical models predict that many of them will have spectra which should cut off in this energy range. At these higher energies, a new component, perhaps from topological defects, may contribute to the background, as well as X-ray selected BL Lac objects. The future GLAST detector should provide important data on the emission of extragalactic sources above 10 GeV and help resolve this issue. GLAST may also be able to detect the signature of intergalactic absorption by pair production interactions of background gamma-rays of energy above 20 GeV with starlight photons, this signature being a steepening of the background spectrum.

Design of Proteins with Specified Thermal Properties

Abstract:We propose a new and effective means for designing stable and fast-folding polypeptide sequences using a cumulant expansion of the molecular partition function. This method is unique in that $T_{Z}$, the ``cumulant design temperature'' entered as a parameter in the design process, is predicted also to be the optimal folding temperature. The method was tested using monte-carlo folding simulations of the designed sequences, at various folding temperatures $T_{F}$. (Folding simulations were run on a cubic lattice for computational convenience, but the design process itself is lattice-independent.) Simulations confirmed that, over a wide range of $T_{Z}$, all designed sequences folded rapidly when $T_{F} \approx T_{Z}$. Additionally, highly thermostable model proteins were created simply by designing with high $T_{Z}$. The mechanism proposed in these studies provides a plausible pathway for the evolutionary design of biologically active proteins, which {\em must} fold and remain stable within a relatively narrow range of temperatures.

The Spectral Shape of the Gamma-ray Background from Blazars

Abstract:The spectral shape of the unresolved emission from different classes of gamma-ray emitters can be used to disentangle the contributions from these populations to the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB). We present a calculation of the unabsorbed spectral shape of the unresolved blazar contribution to the EGRB starting from the spectral index distribution (SID) of resolved EGRET blazars derived through a maximum-likelihood analysis accounting for measurement errors. In addition, we explicitly calculate the uncertainty in this theoretically predicted spectral shape, which enters through the spectral index distribution parameters. We find that: (a) the unresolved blazar emission spectrum is only mildly convex, and thus, even if blazars are shown by GLAST to be a dominant contribution to the ERGB at lower energies, they may be insufficient to explain the EGRB at higher energies; (b) the theoretically predicted unresolved spectral shape involves significant uncertainties due to the limited constraints provided by EGRET data on the SID parameters, which are comparable to the statistical uncertainties of the observed EGRET EGRB at high energies; (c) the increased number statistics which will be provided by GLAST will be sufficient to reduce this uncertainty by at least a factor of three.

A low level of extragalactic background light as revealed by gamma-rays from blazars

Abstract:The diffuse extragalactic background light consists of the sum of the starlight emitted by galaxies through the history of the Universe, and it could also have an important contribution from the first stars, which may have formed before galaxy formation began. Direct measurements are difficult and not yet conclusive, owing to the large uncertainties caused by the bright foreground emission associated with zodiacal light. An alternative approach is to study the absorption features imprinted on the gamma-ray spectra of distant extragalactic objects by interactions of those photons with the background light photons. Here we report the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the blazars H 2356-309 and 1ES 1101-232, at redshifts z=0.165 and z=0.186, respectively. Their unexpectedly hard spectra provide an upper limit on the background light at optical/near-infrared wavelengths that appears to be very close to the lower limit given by the integrated light of resolved galaxies. The background flux at these wavelengths accordingly seems to be strongly dominated by the direct starlight from galaxies, thus excluding a large contribution from other sources -- in particular from the first stars formed. This result also indicates that intergalactic space is more transparent to gamma-rays than previously thought.

Abstract:We study numerically the inhomogeneous pre-big-bang inflation in a spherically symmetric space-time. We find that a large initial inhomogeneity suppresses the onset of the pre-big-bang inflation. We also find that even if the pre-big-bang inflationary stage is realized, the initial inhomogeneities are not homogenized. Namely, during the pre-big-bang inflation ``hairs''(irregularities) do not fall, in sharp contrast to the usual (potential energy dominated) inflation where initial inhomogeneity and anisotropy are damped and thus the resulting universe is less sensitive to initial conditions.

Abstract:Blazar emission of gamma rays and cosmic ray production of gamma rays in gas-rich clusters have been proposed recently as alternative sources of the high energy extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background radiation. We show that these sources also produce a very different high energy extragalactic diffuse neutrino background radiation. This neutrino background may be detected by the new generation of large neutrino telescopes under construction and may be used to trace the origin of the extragalactic gamma radiation.

Abstract:A large fraction of the anticipated source detections by the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST-LAT) will initially be unidentified. We argue that traditional approaches to identify individuals and/or populations of gamma ray sources will encounter procedural limitations. Those limitations are discussed on the background of source identifications from EGRET observations. Generally, our ability to classify (faint) source populations in the anticipated GLAST dataset with the required degree of statistical confidence will be hampered by sheer source wealth. A new paradigm for achieving the classification of gamma ray source populations is discussed.

Gamma Rays from Clusters and Groups of Galaxies: Cosmic Rays versus Dark Matter

Abstract:Clusters of galaxies have not yet been detected at gamma-ray frequencies; however, the recently launched Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, formerly known as GLAST, could provide the first detections in the near future. Clusters are expected to emit gamma rays as a result of (1) a population of high-energy primary and re-accelerated secondary cosmic rays (CR) fueled by structure formation and merger shocks, active galactic nuclei and supernovae, and (2) particle dark matter (DM) annihilation. In this paper, we ask the question of whether the Fermi telescope will be able to discriminate between the two emission processes. We present data-driven predictions for a large X-ray flux limited sample of galaxy clusters and groups. We point out that the gamma ray signals from CR and DM can be comparable. In particular, we find that poor clusters and groups are the systems predicted to have the highest DM to CR emission at gamma-ray energies. Based on detailed Fermi simulations, we study observational handles that might enable us to distinguish the two emission mechanisms, including the gamma-ray spectra, the spatial distribution of the signal and the associated multi-wavelength emissions. We also propose optimal hardness ratios, which will help to understand the nature of the gamma-ray emission. Our study indicates that gamma rays from DM annihilation with a high particle mass can be distinguished from a CR spectrum even for fairly faint sources. Discriminating a CR spectrum from a light DM particle will be instead much more difficult, and will require long observations and/or a bright source. While the gamma-ray emission from our simulated clusters is extended, determining the spatial distribution with Fermi will be a challenging task requiring an optimal control of the backgrounds.

Abstract:The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) is a space-based observatory scheduled to launch in October 2007 with two instruments: (1) the GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM), sensitive to photon energies between 8 keV and 25 MeV and optimized to detect gamma-ray bursts, and (2) the Large Area Telescope (LAT), sensitive to gamma rays between 20 MeV and 300 GeV and designed to survey the gamma-ray sky with unprecedented sensitivity. We describe the LAT and the GBM. We then focus on the LAT's capabilities for studying active galactic nuclei.

Strong GeV Emission Accompanying TeV Blazar H1426+428

Abstract:For High frequency BL Lac objects (HBLs) like H 1426+428, a significant fraction of their TeV gamma-rays emitted are likely to be absorbed in interactions with the diffuse IR background, yielding e(+/-) pairs. The resulting e(+/-) pairs generate one hitherto undiscovered GeV emission by inverse Compton scattering with the cosmic microwave background photons (CMBPs). We study such emission by taking the 1998-2000 CAT data, the reanalyzed 1999 & 2000 HEGRA data and the corresponding intrinsic spectra proposed by Aharonian et al. (2003a). We numerically calculate the scattered photon spectra for different intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) strengths. If the IGMF is about 10(-18) G or weaker, there comes very strong GeV emission, whose flux is far above the detection sensitivity of the upcoming satellite GLAST! Considered its relatively high redshift (z=0.129), the detected GeV emission in turn provides us a valuable chance to calibrate the poorly known spectral energy distribution of the intergalactic infrared background, or provides us some reliable constraints on the poorly known IGMF strength.

Abstract:We describe the role of GeV gamma-ray observations with GLAST-LAT (Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope - Large Area Telescope) in identifying interaction sites of cosmic-ray proton (or hadrons) with interstellar medium (ISM). We expect to detect gamma rays from neutral pion decays in high-density ISM regions in the Galaxy, Large Magellanic Cloud, and other satellite galaxies. These gamma-ray sources have been detected already with EGRET (Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope) as extended sources (eg. LMC and Orion clouds) and GLAST-LAT will detect many more with a higher spatial resolution and in a wider spectral range. We have developed a novel image restoration technique based on the Richardson-Lucy algorithm optimized for GLAST-LAT observation of extended sources. Our algorithm calculates PSF (point spread function) for each event. This step is very important for GLAST-LAT and EGRET image analysis since PSF varies more than one order of magnitude from one gamma ray to another depending on its energy as well as its impact point and angle in the instrument. The GLAST-LAT and EGRET image analysis has to cope with Poisson fluctuation due to low number of detected photons for most sources. Our technique incorporates wavelet filtering to minimize effects due to the fluctuation. Preliminary studies on some EGRET sources are presented, which shows potential of this novel image restoration technique for the identification and characterisation of extended gamma-ray sources.

Abstract:A tight correlation between gamma-ray and radio emission is found for a sample of BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects detected by Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) and the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET). The gamma-ray emission of BL Lac objects exhibits strong variability, and the detection rate of gamma-ray BL Lac objects is low, which may be related to the gamma-ray duty cycle of BL Lac objects. We estimate the gamma-ray duty cycle ~ 0.11, for BL Lac objects detected by EGRET and Fermi. Using the empirical relation of gamma-ray emission with radio emission and the estimated gamma-ray duty cycle, we derive the gamma-ray luminosity function (LF) of BL Lac objects from their radio LF. Our derived gamma-ray LF of BL Lac objects can almost reproduce that calculated with the recently released Fermi bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) sample. We find that about 45% of the extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray background (EGRB) is contributed by BL Lac objects. Combining the estimate of the quasar contribution to the EGRB in the previous work, we find that about 77% of the EGRB is contributed by BL Lac objects and radio quasars.

Scrutinizing the Isotropic Gamma-Ray Background in Search of Dark Matter

Abstract:The isotropic gamma-ray background (IGRB), measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, is the result of several classes of extragalactic astrophysical sources. Those sources include blazars, start-forming galaxies and radio galaxies. Also, ultra-high-energy cosmic rays interacting with the infrared background, contribute to the isotropic background. Using information from Fermi's gamma-ray sources catalog and the results of dedicated studies of these classes of sources, from observations at the infrared and radio, we model their contribution to the IGRB. In addition to conventional astrophysical sources, dark matter may be a component of the IGRB. We combine our model of conventional astrophysical sources and of dark matter annihilation in distant galaxies, marginalizing over relevant uncertainties, to derive constraints on the dark matter annihilation cross section, from the measured IGRB. In calculating the contribution from dark matter we include the flux from extragalactic halos and their substructure and also the subdominant contribution from Milky Way's halo at high galactic latitudes. The resulting constraints are competitive with the strongest current constraints from the dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Under certain dark matter assumptions, we also find an indication for a small excess flux in the isotropic background. Our results are consistent with the gamma-ray excess at GeV energies toward the galactic center.

The Likely Cause of the EGRET GeV Anomaly and its Implications

Abstract:Analysis of data from the EGRET gamma-ray detector on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory indicated an anomaly in the form of an excess diffuse galactic flux at GeV energies over that which was theoretically predicted. Various explanations for this anomaly have been put forth, including the invocation of supersymmetric dark matter annihilation. We reexamine these explanations here, including a new discussion of the possible systematic errors in the sensitivity determination of the EGRET detector. We conclude that the most likely explanation of the EGRET ``GeV anomaly'' was an error in the estimation of the of the EGRET sensitivity at energies above ~1 GeV. We give reasons why such a situation could have occurred. We find evidence from our new all-sky analysis which is inconsistent with the assumption that the anomaly can be a signal of supersymmetric dark matter annihilation. We also reconfirm the original results of the EGRET team on the extragalactic gamma-ray background spectrum. There are important implications of our analysis for the upcoming Gamma Ray Large Area Telescope (GLAST) mission.

Abstract:Attenuation of high--energy gamma rays by pair--production with UV, optical and IR background photons provides a link between the history of galaxy formation and high--energy astrophysics. We present results from our latest semi-analytic models (SAMs), based upon a $\Lambda$CDM hierarchical structural formation scenario and employing all ingredients thought to be important to galaxy formation and evolution, as well as reprocessing of starlight by dust to mid- and far-IR wavelengths. Our models also use results from recent hydrodynamic galaxy merger simulations. These latest SAMs are successful in reproducing a large variety of observational constraints such as number counts, luminosity and mass functions, and color bimodality. We have created 2 models that bracket the likely ranges of galaxy emissivities, and for each of these we show how the optical depth from pair--production is affected by redshift and gamma-ray energy. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of our work, and how the burgeoning science of gamma-ray astronomy will continue to help constrain cosmology.

Abstract:The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is the main radiation field responsible for attenuating extragalactic gamma-ray emission at very high energies, but its precise spectral intensity is not fully determined. Therefore, disentangling propagation effects from the intrinsic spectral properties of gamma-ray sources (such as active galactic nuclei, AGN) is the primary challenge to interpret observations of these objects. We present a Bayesian and Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to simultaneously infer parameters characterizing the EBL and the intrinsic spectra in a combined fit of a set of sources, which has the advantage of easily incorporating the uncertainties of both sets of parameters into one another through marginalization of the posterior distribution. Taking a sample of synthetic blazars observed by the ideal CTA configuration, we study the effects on the EBL constraints of combining multiple observations and varying their exposure. We also apply the methodology to a set of 65 gamma-ray spectra of 36 different AGNs measured by current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo as a solution to the difficult task of sampling in spaces with a high number of parameters. We find robust constraints in the mid-IR region while simultaneously obtaining intrinsic spectral parameters for all of these objects. In particular, we identify Markarian 501 (Mkn 501) flare data (HEGRA/1997) as essential for constraining the EBL above 30 μm.

The Galactic TeV sky: sources or diffuse emission?

Abstract:Gamma-ray observations have recently shifted the focus to higher and higher energies, with capable ground-based instruments enabling measurements in the TeV to PeV domain. While a clear prevalence of diffuse emission is observed in the GeV sky, energy-dependent cosmic-ray transport suggests a reversal of this hierarchy at higher energies. Measurements, however, are at strife regarding this question. While imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) see a source-dominated Galactic plane, air-shower particle detectors (ASPDs) report a dominance of diffuse emission. Reconciling these claims might require a closer look at the involved instrument limitations: IACTs have a small field of view, resulting in poorer performance for large-scale emission due to the applied background subtraction technique. ASPDs have reduced resolution capabilities, resulting in unresolved sources contributing to the measurable diffuse emission signal. Here we contribute to this controversy by investigating the amount of unresolved sources in current TeV measurements in a population synthesis approach and discuss the unique capabilities for high-resolution diffuse-emission measurements with IACTs and their possibilities for overcoming their background limitations.

Robust inference of the Galactic centre gamma-ray excess spatial properties

Abstract:The gamma-ray Fermi-LAT Galactic centre excess (GCE) has puzzled scientists for over 15 years. Despite ongoing debates about its properties, and especially its spatial distribution, its nature remains elusive. We scrutinize how the estimated spatial morphology of this excess depends on models for the Galactic diffuse emission, focusing particularly on the extent to which the Galactic plane and point sources are masked. Our main aim is to compare a spherically symmetric morphology - potentially arising from the annihilation of dark matter (DM) particles - with a boxy morphology - expected if faint unresolved sources in the Galactic bulge dominate the excess emission. Recent claims favouring a DM-motivated template for the GCE are shown to rely on a specific Galactic bulge template, which performs worse than other templates for the Galactic bulge. We find that a non-parametric model of the Galactic bulge derived from the VVV survey results in a significantly better fit for the GCE than DM-motivated templates. This result is independent of whether a GALPROP-based model or a more non-parametric ring-based model is used to describe the diffuse Galactic emission. This conclusion remains true even when additional freedom is added in the background models, allowing for non-parametric modulation of the model components and substantially improving the fit quality. When adopted, optimized background models provide robust results in terms of preference for a boxy bulge morphology of the GCE, regardless of the mask applied to the Galactic plane.

Semi-Analytic Model for Intergalactic Gamma-Ray Cascades in Extragalactic Magnetic Fields

Abstract:Primary gamma rays emitted by extragalactic sources, such as blazars, will generate electromagnetic cascades in intergalactic space. These cascades proceed via electron-positron pair production and inverse Compton scattering on cosmic background radiation, mainly the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and extragalactic background light (EBL) fields. The existence of an extragalactic magnetic field (EGMF) could deflect electron-positron pair trajectories and scatter the cascade photons, possibly creating a halo around the source while suppressing the cascade flux collected by a detector. We develop a semi-analytic model for the cascade process and apply it to combine GeV-TeV data on high-frequency-peaked Bl Lacertae objects (HBLs) from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and ground-based Cherenkov telescopes, comparing observation results with model predictions using a robust statistical framework. Lower limits with different confidence levels on the field strength of the EGMF derived from this procedure are discussed under various assumptions about the source livetime.

Abstract:Blazars are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN) having relativistic jets aligned within a few degrees of our line-of-sight and form the majority of the AGN detected in the TeV regime. The Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) is a pair-conversion telescope, sensitive to photons having energies between 20 MeV and 2 TeV, and is capable of scanning the entire gamma-ray sky every three hours. Despite the remarkable success of the Fermi mission, many questions still remain unanswered, such as the site of gamma-ray production and the emission mechanisms involved. The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) is a high cadence all sky survey system optimized to be efficient for finding potentially dangerous asteroids, as well as in tracking and searching for highly variable and transient sources, such as AGN. In this study, we investigate possible correlations between the Fermi-LAT observations in the 100 MeV-300 GeV energy band and the ATLAS optical data in the R-band, centered at 679 nm, for a sample of 18 TeV-detected northern blazars over 8 years of observations between 2015 and 2022. Under the assumption that the optical and gamma-ray flares are produced by the same outburst propagating down the jet, the strong correlations found for some sources suggest a single-zone leptonic model of emission.
