Abstract:We study various properties of an ultracold two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas that are beyond a mean-field description. We first derive the effective interaction for such a system as realized in current experiments, which requires the use of an energy dependent $T$-matrix. Using this result, we then solve the mean-field equation of state of the modified Popov theory, and compare it with the usual Hartree-Fock theory. We show that even though the former theory does not suffer from infrared divergences in both the normal and superfluid phases, there is an unphysical density discontinuity close to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We then improve upon the mean-field description by using a renormalization group approach and show how the density discontinuity is resolved. The flow equations in two dimensions, in particular, of the symmetry-broken phase, already contain some unique features pertinent to the 2D XY model, even though vortices have not been included explicitly. We also compute various many-body correlators, and show that correlation effects beyond the Hartree-Fock theory are important already in the normal phase as criticality is approached. We finally extend our results to the inhomogeneous case of a trapped Bose gas using the local-density approximation and show that close to criticality, the renormalization group approach is required for the accurate determination of the density profile.
Anderson Impurity Mechanism for a Multi-Level Model in $δ$-Pu

Abstract:Electronic correlations and spin-orbit interactions in plutonium create variations in the bonding behavior of each of its allotropes. In $\delta$-Pu, the 5f electrons lie at the tipping point between itinerant and localized behavior which makes the creation of predictive models very difficult. We perform density functional theory calculations to study the effect of correlated descriptions on the mechanical properties of $\delta$-Pu. We find that 7.5% $E_{xx}$ in the HSE functional yields the experimental lattice parameters, moreover, this functional recovers the experimental elastic constants while other approximations fail. The electronic structure of the hybrid functional yields several signatures of strong correlations including orbital-selective bonding of a single 5f electron and a pseudogap-like feature which work in tandem to improve the description of mechanical properties. We show how the emergence of orbital-selective bonding in the hybrid functional can be understood through an Anderson impurity picture which predicts the augmentation of $\pi$-bonding, the decrease of $\sigma$-bonding, and expands the volume of the cell, enabling the accurate description of the mechanical properties of $\delta$-Pu.

Abstract:We present a theoretical model of the electronic structure of delta-Pu that is consistent with many of the electronic structure related properties of this complex metal. In particular we show that the theory is capable of reproducing the valence band photoelectron spectrum of delta-Pu. We report new experimental photoelectron spectra at several photon energies and present evidence that the electronic structure of delta-Pu is unique among the elements, involving a 5f shell with four 5f electrons in a localized multiplet, hybridizing with valence states, and approximately one 5f electron forming a completely delocalized band state.

Abstract:Heat capacity measurements of the delta-phase stabilized alloy Pu-Al suggest that strong electron-phonon coupling is required to explain the moderate renormalization of the electronic density of states near the Fermi energy. We calculate the heat capacity contributions from the lattice and electronic degrees of freedom as well as from the electron-lattice coupling term and find good overall agreement between experiment and theory assuming a dimensionless electron-phonon coupling parameter of order unity, lambda ~ 0.8. This large electron-phonon coupling parameter is comparable to reported values in other superconducting metals with face-centered cubic crystal structure, for example, Pd (lambda ~ 0.7) and Pb (lambda ~ 1.5). Further, our analysis shows evidence of a sizable residual low-temperature entropy contribution, S_{res} ~ 0.4 k_B (per atom). We can fit the residual specific heat to a two-level system. Therefore, we speculate that the observed residual entropy originates from crystal-electric field effects of the Pu atoms or from self-irradiation induced defects frozen in at low temperatures.

Abstract:The ground state of a double quantum-dot structure is studied by a simplified Anderson-type model. Numerical calculations reveal that the ground-state level of this artificial molecule increases with the increasing single particle level of the dot, and also increases with the decreasing transfer integrals. We show the staircase feature of the electron occupation and the properties of the ground-state eigenvector by varying the single particle level of the dot.

Abstract:A central issue in material science is to obtain understanding of the electronic correlations that control complex materials. Such electronic correlations frequently arise due to the competition of localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom. While the respective limits of well-localized or entirely itinerant ground states are well-understood, the intermediate regime that controls the functional properties of complex materials continues to challenge theoretical understanding. We have used neutron spectroscopy to investigate plutonium, which is a prototypical material at the brink between bonding and non-bonding configurations. Our study reveals that the ground state of plutonium is governed by valence fluctuations, that is, a quantum-mechanical superposition of localized and itinerant electronic configurations as recently predicted by dynamical mean field theory. Our results not only resolve the long-standing controversy between experiment and theory on plutonium's magnetism, but also suggest an improved understanding of the effects of such electronic dichotomy in complex materials.

Abstract:We propose a straightforward and efficient procedure to perform dynamical mean-field (DMFT) calculations on the top of the static mean-field LDA+U approximation. Starting from self-consistent LDA+U ground state we included multiplet transitions using the Hubbard-I approximation, which yields a very good agreement with experimental photoelectron spectra of $\delta$-Pu, Am, and their selected compounds.

Abstract:Plutonium's phase diagram is host to complex structures and interactions that make the description of its ground state properties elusive. Using all-electron density functional theory, we study the thermodynamic properties of $\alpha$-Pu. To do this, we build on recent work in the literature by introducing a novel noncollinear magnetic ansatz for $\alpha$-Pu's ground state. The noncollinear ansatz accurately recovers the experimental phonon density of states, heat capacity, and thermal expansion. These new results on $\alpha$-Pu along with recent results on $\delta$-Pu demonstrate the efficacy of noncollinear ansatzes for the description of plutonium.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve one-dimensional SU(3) bosons with repulsive delta-function interaction using the Bethe ansatz method. The features of the ground and low-lying excited states are studied by both numerical and analytical methods. We show that the ground state is a SU(3) colour ferromagnetic state. The configurations of quantum numbers for the ground state are given explicitly. For a finite N system, the spectra of low-lying excitations and the dispersion relations of four possible elementary particles (holon, antiholon, sigma-coloron and omega-coloron) are obtained by solving the Bethe ansatz equation numerically. The thermodynamic equilibrium of the system at finite temperature is studied by using the strategy of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz; we give a revised Gaudin-Takahashi equation which is useful for the numerical method. Thermodynamic quantities, such as specific heat, are obtained for some special cases. We find that the magnetic property of the model in the high-temperature regime is dominated by Curie's law, chi proportional to 1/T, and the system has Fermi-liquid-like specific heat in the strong coupling limit at low temperature.

Abstract:The Hubbard model for electrons with orbital degeneracy is shown to have an underlying SU_d(4) symmetry of spin-orbital double. A hidden charge SU_c(4) symmetry is exposed and an extended Lieb-Mattis transformation which maps these two symmetries into each other is given. On the basis of elementary degenerate perturbative theory, it is shown that the system with strong repulsive coupling is equivalent to a SO(6) Heisenberg magnet at half-filling and a SU(4) one at quarter-filling. The band is half-filled at all temperature for $\mu=3U/2$. The features of ground state and low-lying excitations in one dimension are indicated according to exact solutions. Various possibilities of symmetry breaking are also given.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Bose system with repulsive delta-function interaction in the presence of an SU(2) intrinsic degree of freedom on the basis of the coordinate Bethe-ansatz. The ground state and the low-lying excitations are determined by both numerical and analytical methods. It is shown that the ground state is an isospin-ferromagnetic state, and the excitations are composed of three elementary particles: holons, antiholons, and isospinons. The isospinon is a triplet coupled to the "ferromagnetic" background anti-parallelly.

Abstract:The correlated-band theory implemented as a combination of the local-density approximation with the dynamical mean-field theory is applied to PuO2. An insulating electronic structure, consistent with the experimental valence-band photoemission spectra, is obtained. The calculations yield a nonmagnetic ground state that is characterized by a noninteger filling of the plutonium 5f shell. The noninteger filling as well as the satellites appearing in the 4f core-level photoemission spectra originate in a sizable hybridization of the 5f shell with the 2p states of oxygen.

The ground-state characteristics of deuteron using Gaussian potentials

Abstract:. The translation invariant shell model is applied to the deuteron nucleus with even number of quanta of excitations in the range 0 < N < 10. The residual interparticle interactions for this nucleus consist of central, tensor, spin-orbit and quadratic spin-orbit forces with Gaussian radial dependences. The parameters of these interactions, are fitted to reproduce good agreements between the calculated and the experimental values of the deuteron binding energy, mean-square radius, D-state probability, magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment.

Nuclear ground-state properties probed by the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov approach

Abstract:Using the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov framework with separable pairing force coupled with the latest covariant density functionals, i.e., PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX, we systematically explore the ground-state properties of all isotopes of Z=8-110. These properties consist of the binding energies, one- and two-neutron separation energies ($S_\mathrm{n}$ and $S_\mathrm{2n}$), root-mean-square radius of matter, of neutron, of proton, and of charge distributions, Fermi surfaces, ground-state spins and parities. We then predict the edges of nuclear landscape and bound nuclei for the isotopic chains from oxygen (Z=8) to darmstadtium (Z=110) based on these latest covariant density functionals. The number of bound nuclei predicted by PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX, are 9004, 9162, 6799, and 7112, respectively. The root-mean-square deviations of $S_\mathrm{n}$ ($S_\mathrm{2n}$) yielded from PC-L3R, PCX, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX are 0.962 (1.300) MeV, 0.920 (1.483) MeV, 0.993 (1.753) MeV, and 1.010 (1.544) MeV, respectively. The root-mean-square deviations of charge radius distributions of comparing the available experimental values with the theoretical counterparts resulted from PC-L3R, PC-X, DD-PCX, and DD-MEX are 0.035 fm, 0.037 fm, 0.035 fm, and 0.034 fm, respectively. We notice pronounced differences between the empirical and theoretical root-mean-square radii of neutron at nuclei near the neutron drip line of the Mg, Ca, and Kr isotopic chains, suggesting the possible existence of the halo or giant halo phenomena.

Abstract:Systematically studying the crystal, magnetic, and electronic structures of PuGa3 with density functional theory (DFT) reveals the entanglement of the three types of structure. Magnetic structure affects the energy more strongly than crystal structure. For DFT to correctly order the crystal structures in agreement with experiment requires special treatment of the electronic correlation in the 5f states, exemplified here by the GGA+U approach. The upper and lower Hubbard bands change with increasing U in very dissimilar ways for the two most different crystal structures. The results suggest the effectiveness of using magnetic structure to simulate correlation effects in the actinides depends on both the magnetic and the crystal structure.

Abstract:In this paper we have systematically analyzed the ground state of uranium isotopes from 225 to 240. In our calculations, we used the covariant energy density functional of density dependent meson exchange interaction (DD-ME2) with separable pairing interaction (TMR). Using the multiple deformation constraint, we calculate the potential energy surface (PES) of the uranium isotopes for both even-even and even-odd nuclei with quadrupole and octupole deformation. By comparison with experimental data and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with Gogny D1S, the ground state of the uranium isotopes is always preferred to reflection-asymmetric deformation with our calculation.

Site-Selective Electronic Correlation in alpha-Plutonium Metal

Abstract:An understanding of the phase diagram of elemental plutonium (Pu) must include both the effects of the strong directional bonding and the high density of states of the Pu 5f electrons, as well as how that bonding weakens under the influence of strong electronic correlations. We present for the first time electronic-structure calculations of the full 16-atom per unit cell alpha-phase structure within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) together with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Our calculations demonstrate that Pu atoms sitting on different sites within the alpha-Pu crystal structure have a strongly varying site dependence of the localization-delocalization correlation effects of their 5f electrons and a corresponding effect on the bonding and electronic properties of this complicated metal. In short, alpha-Pu has the capacity to simultaneously have multiple degrees of electron localization/delocalization of Pu 5f electrons within a pure single-element material.

Path-Integral Renormalization Group Method for Numerical Study on Ground States of Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems

Abstract:A new efficient numerical algorithm for interacting fermion systems is proposed and examined in detail. The ground state is expressed approximately by a linear combination of numerically chosen basis states in a truncated Hilbert space. Two procedures lead to a better approximation. The first is a numerical renormalization, which optimizes the chosen basis and projects onto the ground state within the fixed dimension, $L$, of the Hilbert space. The second is an increase of the dimension of the truncated Hilbert space, which enables the linear combination to converge to a better approximation. The extrapolation $L\to\infty$ after the convergence removes the approximation error systematically. This algorithm does not suffer from the negative sign problem and can be applied to systems in any spatial dimension and arbitrary lattice structure. The efficiency is tested and the implementation explained for two-dimensional Hubbard models where Slater determinants are employed as chosen basis. Our results with less than 400 chosen basis indicate good accuracy within the errorbar of the best available results as those of the quantum Monte Carlo for energy and other physical quantities.

Abstract:We review results from previous muon spin relaxation (mu SR) measurements in applied fields of H-0 = 0 and 0.25 T which established an upper limit for the ordered or disordered frozen spin moment above T = 4 K in delta-Pu (4.3 at.% Ga) of mu(ord) <= 10(-3) mu(B). In addition, we present new data in H-0 = 0.25 and 2 T applied field on a highly annealed delta-Pu (4.3 at.% Ga) sample. Neither the muon Knight shift (H-0 = 2 T) nor the inhomogeneous linewidths in the new sample show appreciable temperature dependence below about T = 60 K, also consistent with no spin freezing. Phase stabilization by electronic entropy in plutonium

Abstract:(Pu) has an unusually rich phase diagram that includes seven distinct solid state phases and an unusually large 25% collapse in volume from its delta phase to its low temperature alpha phase via a series of structural transitions. Despite considerable advances in our understanding of strong electronic correlations within various structural phases of Pu and other actinides, the thermodynamic mechanism responsible for driving the volume collapse has continued to remain a mystery. Here we utilize the unique sensitivity of magnetostriction measurements to unstable f electron shells to uncover the crucial role played by electronic entropy in stabilizing delta-Pu against volume collapse. We find that in contrast to valence fluctuating rare earths, which typically have a single f electron shell instability whose excitations drive the volume in a single direction in temperature and magnetic field, delta-Pu exhibits two such instabilities whose excitations drive the volume in opposite directions while producing an abundance of entropy at elevated temperatures. The two instabilities imply a near degeneracy between several different configurations of the 5f atomic shell, giving rise to a considerably richer behavior than found in rare earth metals. We use heat capacity measurements to establish a robust thermodynamic connection between the two excitation energies, the atomic volume, and the previously reported excess entropy of delta-Pu at elevated temperatures.
