Abstract:Continuous transitions between states with the {\em same} symmetry but different topological orders are studied. Clean quantum Hall (QH) liquids with neutral quasiparticles are shown to have such transitions. For clean bilayer (nnm) states, a continous transition to other QH states (including non-Abelian states) can be driven by increasing interlayer repulsion/tunneling. The effective theories describing the critical points at some transitions are derived.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether there are continuous phase transitions between quantum Hall (QH) liquids, and whether these phase transition points can be described by a critical theory with scaling properties. Specifically: 1. **Existence of continuous phase transitions**: Whether there are continuous phase transitions between quantum Hall liquids of different topological orders while maintaining the same symmetry. 2. **Description of phase transition points**: If such continuous phase transitions exist, whether these phase transition points can be described by a critical theory, and whether these theories exhibit various scaling properties. ### Research background According to Landau theory, different states of matter can be characterized by their symmetries. However, quantum Hall liquids have a new order - topological order, which is independent of symmetry. Therefore, studying the continuous phase transitions between quantum Hall liquids can help us better understand the nature of topological order. ### Research methods The author studies the continuous phase transitions between two quantum Hall liquids with different filling fractions by introducing an appropriate periodic potential. For the bilayer quantum Hall system, the author finds that in the case of increasing inter - layer repulsion or tunneling, a continuous phase transition from one quantum Hall liquid to another can be achieved. In particular, the author studies the phase transitions caused by the condensation of neutral quasiparticles and uses effective field theory to describe these phase transitions. ### Main conclusions 1. **Existence of continuous phase transitions**: The author proves that in a clean quantum Hall system, continuous phase transitions can occur even without periodic potential and disorder. 2. **Description of phase transition points**: These phase transition points can be described by a critical theory with scaling properties, indicating that these phase transition points are critical points. 3. **Specific example of bilayer system**: For the specific bilayer ($n, n, 0$) state, the author analyzes in detail how the system changes from one quantum Hall liquid to another as the inter - layer repulsive force increases, and finally enters the non - Abelian Pfaffian state. ### Formula summary - **Chern - Simons effective theory**: \[ L = -\frac{1}{4\pi}K_{IJ}a^I_\mu\partial_\nu a^J_\lambda\varepsilon^{\mu\nu\lambda}-\frac{e}{2\pi}q_I A_\mu\partial_\nu a^I_\lambda\varepsilon^{\mu\nu\lambda} \] - **Charge and statistics of quasiparticles**: \[ \theta_l=\pi l^T K^{-1}l,\quad Q_l = -e l^T K^{-1}q \] - **K - matrix and q - vector after transformation**: \[ K'=\begin{pmatrix}K&-l\\-l^T&n_e\end{pmatrix},\quad q'=\begin{pmatrix}q\\0\end{pmatrix} \] Through these studies, the author not only proves the existence of continuous topological phase transitions between quantum Hall liquids, but also provides a theoretical framework for understanding these phase transitions.
